Dear Sports Fans,
Tonight's Annual Hat l of Fame Banquet marks the close 01 another
successful year for the Santa Barbara Athletic Roundtable.
The first annual "Sports Person 01 the Year Award" will be given
tonight to a person who had been the most responsible for the
success of an ongoing sports program on the Santa Barbara South
Coast.
The Roundtable has also created the "RUflS Morrison Memorial Golf
Scholarship" which will be awarded for the first time tonight to a
graduating high school senior golfer who will be going on to college
to play golf. A special reserve fund w i ll assure the continuat ion of
this scholarship to be given annually. I wou ld personall y request
your donation to this fund.
Based on the success of the Roundtable 's First Annual Sports
Benefit Golf Tournament which was co-sponsored with the Summer
Sports Festival, plans are now being finalized to hold the Second
Annual Tournament on August 20 and 27. We invite you to compete
in our tournament.
The Roudtab le Board of Directors extends ils congratulations and
best wishes to the boys and girls, men and women who are tonight 's
award recipients.
Join us in September at our Monday Press Luncheons, and please
consider becoming a member of the Roundtable.

EXECUTIVE OFfiCERS
Dr. 8ill Blythe
In the spring of 1968 two of Santa Barbara 's leading sports
enthusiasts, Jerry Harwin and caesar Uyesak., recognizing the
need for an organization dedicated to the assistance and recognition
of all sporting activities and athletes In the greater Santa Barbara
area, decided on the formation of such an organization . During a
period of just three months the Round Tobie grew to an astounding
membership of over 300 citizens also dedicated to the same goats
and ideas.
With funds derived from dues , contributions and fund-raising
events the Round Table has contributed o\l'8r$25,00010 help support
sports in the area. Besides Its assistance to sporta, athletes and
athletic groups, the Round Table through the efforts of its second
president, Bill Bertka , established the highly successful and popular
weekly •. Press Luncheons" that bring news media, prominent
athletic personalities, coaches, athletes, and Interested supporters
together. These luncheons are presided over by the present
presidp.nt of the Round T~ble.
The Round Table also established the Annual Hall of Fame
Banquet, honoring the outstanding athletes of the year and
inducting new members into the Athletic Hall of Fame .
Today. the Round Table numbers nearly 300 membes with
yearly dues of only $5.00 and has become the leading orgnaization in
the ,;omm unity for the promotion and publicity of all sporting events
and assistance to all sports In general.

Observe the manner our coaches approach the
games with "cross town ri vals." It is gratifying to
see. On at least one program this past year a high
school ath lete, upon accepting an award ,
commented on the fact that the coaches are
respons ible for developing a keen ri valry that is
under contro l.

Many communities are not as fortunate and
the r ivalry that develops is not of the highest
caliber and at times this rivalry spi lls over into
other commu nity activities with dire results. Gang
fights, damaged property and hard feelings have
resulted. Most of the time these things could have
been avoided if the coaches approached athletic
competition between communi t y schools in the
right manner .
more than any other single activity in their total
academic program. Th e coaches are largely
responsible for t his. A sou nd , vigorous sports
program is an importan t part in he lives of those
who partic ipate and reaches far beyond the
athletes themselves to the bands, song gi rl s, cheer
leaders, homecom ing queens and their escorts an d
on and on. All but a few of the students take pride
in a wel l run spor ts program and the total impact
on the entire community is impossible to measure.
