from the desk
of the Director
On November 4, the Bay
County Library System
will ask voters to renew
for six years the current
1.0 mill levy for operating
expenses. If passed,
homeowners will continue
to pay at the same
rate they are currently
contributing to library
operations. It will allow
for the continuation of
current levels of library
services, including
the following: library
programs for people
of all ages; access to
the Internet via high
speed connection; new
materials purchased and
cataloged for checkout
and reference; electronic
resources such as
eBooks, eAudiobooks,
and databases; librarians
to help people find
information; maintenance
of buildings, grounds, and
the bookmobile; desktop
and laptop computers,
printers, copiers,
scanners, and microfilm
readers; workshops,
seminars, and classes;
and research resources
in a variety of formats
for business start-up,
job seeking, personal
investment, lifelong
education, literacy,
health, homework and
homeschooling.
Our libraries
are a valuable and
vital resource in our
community. Nearly
63,000 residents own
library cards. In 2013
there were 400,000 visits,
818,000 checkouts, and
49,000 people of all ages
attended 1,670 programs.

National Library Card Month: September
Every parent wants their child to
succeed, and one of the simplest
ways you can ensure your child’s
academic success is by making a
quick trip to the library. September is
Library Card Sign-up Month, a time
when BCLS joins with the American
Library Association and public libraries
nationwide to make sure that every
student has the most important school
supply of all – a free library card.
Students can turn to the library
for materials, programs and services
that support academic achievement.
They can use their library cards from
home, too. Our library system offers
access to important educational
resources, such as eBooks, online
databases and more.
Students learn in a variety
of ways. Thanks to the resources
available at the library, we can meet
the needs of all ages and types of
learners, whether that is through
homework help or access to print and
eBooks. The library has something for
everyone – all with a free library card.
BCLS has planned great
rewards for library card holders.
Throughout the month of September,
all patrons can get a free replacement
card ($3.00 value). Show your library
card at any service desk and receive
an entry to win a gift card. Also,
children 12 & under may show their
library card at any of our children’s
service desks and receive a small
prize.
For more information on how
to sign up for a library card, visit any
BCLS branch library or find out more
at www.baycountylibrary.org.
