DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHOLOGY – ANNUAL REPORT 2012
From the Head of Department
It gives me great pleasure to reflect on the recent accomplishments of the Psychology
Department during 2012.
The highlight of the year is Prof Ron Rapee for his award of Distinguished Professor at
Macquarie University as well as his appointment as Fellow of the Australian Academy of
Social Science.
Congratulations are due to many staff for successful year in research grant application
outcomes. A/Prof Jennifer Hudson was awarded an ARC Future Fellowship. Ron Rapee
and Lorna Peters were both successful in winning NHMRC Project grants, Quincy Wong
was awarded an NHMRC ECR and A/Prof Nick Titov and his team, in collaboration with Access MQ, has been
the successful tender for the provision of online and phone counselling services for the Commonwealth
Government. “MindSpot”, is a service that will provide much needed help to Australians who suffer from
mental health issues. Blake Dear and Sue Meares were both successful in being awarded Motor Accidents
Authority funding and Nick Titov continues to secure Beyond Blue Funding. Staff are also active in externally
funded competitive grants. Congratulations to all!
The Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) exercise in 2012 rated Psychology and Cognitive Science ‘at
world standard’.
Our department has made a significant number of new appointments, including Nick Titov, Greg Savage,
Suzanne Meares, Monique Crane, Naomi Sweller, Kim Curby, Blake Dear, Judy Zou, and other appointments at
post-doctoral and associate lecturer levels. Each of these appointments was highly strategic, building on
existing research strengths within the department while accommodating our teaching needs. A warm
welcome to all of our new staff members.
Several staff members were recently promoted, including Andrew Baillie (associate professor), Lorna Peters
(senior lecturer), Cathy McMahon (associate professor), Simon Boag (senior lecturer), and Megan Oaten
(senior lecturer). Arthur Shores formally retired but remains an Adjunct Professor within our department,
and we are deeply grateful for his outstanding contributions to our Department and to Macquarie University.
We were sad to see the departure of several staff members who made significant contributions to Psychology,
including Kaye Separovic, Ginny Daldalian, and Marcus Ockenden. We understand they are doing well and are
extremely happy in their new roles.
This was a successful year in Higher Degree Research Completions, with Jessica Baker being awarded a VC
commendation for academic excellence.
The Australian Hearing Hub was completed and both the newly renamed Macquarie University Psychology
Clinic and the Emotional Health Clinic relocated into the wonderful facility.

Anxiety disorders are the most common form of mental disorder in childhood. Research has led to some good treatments
but these don't necessarily suit all families. Stepped care is a format that allows the least complicated treatment to be
given to a child first, followed by more intense treatments only when needed. The current study aims to compare this
approach against a standard, established treatment. We expect the stepped care approach to result in better outcomes at
a lower overall cost.

Social phobia is a serious difficulty that has a tremendous impact in an individual's life. Psychological programs for social
phobia have yielded relatively strong positive outcomes, however some individuals do not gain the optimum benefit
from these programs. This study aims to test the effectiveness of an added component in the treatment for social phobia
which focuses on increasing engagement with treatment in order to optimise outcomes.

Dr Wong is a psychologist focused on identifying the patterns of thinking of young people that make them vulnerable
to developing a chronic and debilitating anxiety disorder known as social phobia. To do this, he will measure a range
of thinking patterns of a sample of youth over time, and see which patterns are characteristic of those individuals who
do develop social phobia. By identifying these particular thinking patterns, we will be able to identify youth who need
preventative interventions.

This project is part of a new program of research by the Clinical Research Unit for Anxiety and Depression CRUfAD) that aims to
facilitate well-being in older adults. A growing literature base with both healthy and impaired older people indicates that
interventions aimed at treating psychological distress and arresting cognitive decline by facilitating pro-active management,
including internet training, are successful at improving well-being.
This project aims to facilitate emotional well-being in older people by developing, evaluatingand implementing two internet-based
education programs. The target range is 60 to 75 years, but the programs will be relevant to older and younger adults. One program
targets management of mood and the other targets management of anxiety. To facilitate prevention and well-being, these programs
will be designed for people with clinical and sub-clinical symptoms of depression and anxiety. Both programs will be freely available
to the public and health professionals

This proposal aims to develop best practice guidelines and resources to strengthen and enhance resources already developed
in the sector to deter academic dishonesty and promotion of ethical communities in universities. The universities involved are
Macquarie University, the University of Sydney, the Australian Catholic University, and Rutgers, the State University of New
Jersey. This project has a specific focus on nurturing student leadership to establish grass-root level student associations on
academic integrity that will supplement the top-down approach of university management, as well as on understanding the
cultural nuances that have an impact on the student behaviour in the context of academic integrity. It is intended that the
resources developed would be widely accessible through the OLT website for use nationally within the Australasian university
sector.

Eighteen years of research and innovation were recognised in the 2012 Queen's Birthday Honours.
Years of research and innovation were recognised in the 2012 Queen's Birthday Honours List with
Professor Ron Rapee named a Member (AM) in the general division of the Order of Australia.
Rapee is a world-leading psychologist and director of Macquarie's Centre for Emotional Health,
which conducts research into anxiety, depression and related mental health problems; and which
encompasses the Emotional Health Clinic and the eCentreClinic. He received the award for his
contribution to the field of psychology and to the mental health of Australian families.
Recognised as the first researcher in the world to demonstrate the prevention of anxiety in young
children, his work has led to major improvements in psychology with his practices being adopted
internationally.
The Emotional Health Clinic, which uses the latest knowledge of science and practice to provide
treatments and support to children, adolescents and adults, sees around 700 people each year.
Of the Order of Australia, Rapee says: "I was somewhat surprised and really thrilled to receive this
honour. I've always wanted to do work that is directly relevant in the street and directly relevant to
people's health. This honour means that my work has been recognised in this way

The Rod Power Psychology Clinic
Purpose of the Clinic
The Rod Power Psychology Clinic is a centre of excellence in empowering future Clinical and Clinical Neuropsychology
Provisional/Psychologists for their careers as Endorsed Psychologists as recognised by the Psychology Board of Australia. It is therefore staffed
by Master and Doctor of Psychology students who are undertaking supervised training in the specialised areas of Clinical Psychology and
Clinical Neuropsychology. Its mission is to “provide a supportive environment in which specialist psychology students learn to develop
professional skills in practice through learning to integrate and formulate information”. The Clinic provides a wide range of services to the
community including individual, couple, family and group therapy, as well as psychometric and neuropsychological assessment of adults and
children. Specialised groups to assist children in developing social skills and adults to manage ADHD are run approximately quarterly. Services
are reviewed and modified in response to the needs of the community. Organisational Psychology students will join the clinic in 2013.
Student Activity
49 students trained in the Clinic over the year, 1 less than 2011. Of these, 36 were clinical students (1 more than 2011) and 13 clinical
neuropsychology students. Feedback from Clinical Students completing the clinic in 2012 via an anonymous online questionnaire, showed that
82% rate the overall clinic placement as 4 or 5/5 and particularly appreciate the Supervision both individual and group, as well as the Peer
support process. Feedback from Field Supervisors as to student quality remains very positive, enabling external field placements to be readily
available.
Clinical Activity
In 2012, most activities of the clinic were strongly supported with an abundance of psychometric, clinical neuropsychological assessments
and group participants. Therapy client numbers remained low, however this was somewhat ameliorated by client “overflow” being referred on
from the Student Wellbeing counselling service. Marketing strategies were engaged which were effective at the time they were applied,
including a Google Adwords campaign and a mail out to local General Practitioners. Feedback from clients of the clinic by an anonymous
survey showed the clients perceive the clinic to be helpful with 87% rating the clinic as very useful or useful. The Outcome Questionnaire of
adult therapy cases in the clinic shows a significant decrease in dysfunction over the course of therapy with most clients attending for an
average of 12 sessions. The YOQ SR/PR was completed for less sessions (average 5) and therefore showed less improvement overall.
Overall therefore client outcomes are good. Gross income: $95,922.50.

Staff Activity
The reception job share position has been maintained casually until the clinic moved into the Hearing Hub, such that the adequacy of the
position description can be assessed for the new environment. The position will cover both Emotional Health Clinic and Macquarie University
Psychology Clinic. In addition, a new Clinical Psychologist Supervisor Meredith Kearney has been appointed on contract one day per week to
supervise the increased Clinical Psychology intake into the program in the second semester of 2012. Jane Lonie, the Field Placement Coordinator has moved into the Clinic to facilitate communication with both Sharon Watt (Clinic Clinical Neuropsychology Supervisor) and
Sabina Morrow (admin support for placements).

DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHOLOGY – ANNUAL REPORT 2012
Research Activity
Limited research activities were undertaken in the Clinic in 2012 pending the move to the Australian Hearing Hub. Ms Julie Chesterfield
continued the research on the social skills group across 2010- 2011 as part of her DPsych program. This study will continue for 2012.
Ms Mimi Wellisch has published a further article from her research in the Clinic from 2010:
Wellisch, M., Brown, J. and Knight, R. (2012). Gifted and misunderstood: Mothers’ narratives of their gifted children’s socio-emotional
adjustment and educational challenge The Australasian Journal of Gifted Education, 21(2), 5-18.
Outreach Activities and External Committees
Most Supervisor staff in the Clinic are actively involved in the Profession and are leaders for the University as well as models for student
Professional Development. Ros Knight was the Treasurer for the NSW Clinical College of the APS and Membership Secretary/Secretary for
the National Clinical College of the APS, the leading representative body for Clinical Psychology in Australia. She has also acted as the
Subject Matter Expert for the Clinconnect Web based placement system and has become the MQ representative on the Psychology Advisory
Council of Department of Health. She has been appointed the MQ AHPRA representative for graduate registration issues. Brian O’Grady is
on the organising committee of the Anxiety Practitioner’s Network. Caroline Stevenson was a member of the ADDULT (Adult with ADHD)
NSW committee and member of the LD Coalition. Thomas Schick was the Treasurer of the NSW Counselling College of the APS and coopted to the National Committee as Co-ordinator of the National Counselling College awards committee.
Conclusions
The Clinic performed well in 2012 with targets met for student training, and client service. It remains a positive learning environment with
excellent outcomes in student learning and client improvement. Its outreach function to the community has been successful, providing good
services and a positive image of Psychology. The move to the Australian Hearing Hub, including a name change to “Macquarie University
Psychology Clinic” is eagerly anticipated.

Macquarie University Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Clinic - Westmead
Hospital
The Macquarie University Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Clinic at Westmead Hospital was established in May 2001 in the
Department of Rehabilitation Medicine. Dr Jennifer Batchelor and Dr Sue Meares are the Clinic Directors.
Clinical Activity
Placement supervision of Provisional Psychologists undertaking postgraduate training in Clinical Neuropsychology continued in 2012
under the supervision of Amanda Olley, Clinical Neuropsychologist, Supervisor. In August 2012, Kate Martin, Clinical
Neuropsychologist commenced as the locum Supervisor. The clinic provides first or second placements to clinical neuropsychology
students, and a comprehensive neuropsychological service to patients of Westmead Hospital with a mild TBI. In early 2012, the clinic
was relocated to new offices centrally located on the hospital grounds. The refurbishment allowed for purpose built office space to
better accommodate all students on placement, and a separate research office to support the growing research agenda of the clinic.
Eleven Provisional Psychologists completed clinical placements in 2012. Provisional Psychologists conduct inpatient screening of
cognition and Post Traumatic Amnesia (PTA) as well as outpatient neuropsychological assessments. Although the clinic’s priority
remains the assessment of Mild TBI, since August 2011, the clinic has received a small number of referrals of rehabilitation patients
who have suffered a stroke or other neurological event, from the Mount Druitt Hospital Stroke Outreach Service, under the direction of
Dr Jenny Chapman, Rehabilitation Specialist. In addition to patient assessments; Provisional Psychologists are provided with a broad
introduction to the hospital setting and attend multidisciplinary meetings and medical rounds. This year, saw the re-commencement of
students attending fortnightly rounds with the Trauma Team to enhance their medical knowledge and understanding of the hospital
setting.

Our department provides undergraduate and postgraduate training in psychology of a world-class standard. This is possible through a
combination of academic staff, who are leaders in their specialities, excellent teaching facilities and state-of-the-art research facilities.
Our academics gain new insights and ideas by visiting universities around Australia and around the world and by having international
visitors come to Macquarie. Research opportunities include the Rod Power Psychology Clinic, driving simulator, animal laboratories and
motion capture facilities. Our teaching and research facilities are supported by a committed and skilled team of technical and
administrative staff who support students and staff alike.
Our students are taught by the people who do the research so they hear it straight from the experts and it shows in the many prestigious
destinations at which our graduates end up. Our undergraduate programs are pathways to registration as a psychologist in NSW and our
postgraduate programs offer pathways to careers specialising in clinical psychology, clinical neuropsychology or organisational
psychology.
While our fundamental charter is to train psychologists, we aim to excel in training psychologists who are broad thinking and understand
their value to society and use their skills to its benefit. We strive to communicate the importance of evidence-based psychological practice
and continuous professional development so that our graduates contribute to psychology practice, research and teaching into the future.
