HVGRC NEWS A newsletter for members of the Hudson Valley Golden Retriever Club July – September 2016 President’s Letter I would like to sincerely thank the membership for their vote of confidence in my election to another two-year term as your President. I’ve been a member of this club for many years and continue to enjoy our meetings, events and spending time with members. The biggest challenge to my role is encouraging membership participation in our various events and meetings. I joined HVGRC to learn more about this breed, the various venues open to me as an owner and to spend time with other Golden Retriever people. I have definitely learned a lot and continue to do so with each meeting and event we sponsor. Although Dock Diving may not be a “learning experience” in the technical sense, I have a feeling it was quite the experience (I’m writing this in advance of the meeting and the potential embarrassment of my dog looking at the dock and running the other way…). Each meeting we develop is for the membership and we are open to new ideas and suggestions. Upcoming meetings in the developmental stage include a “history lesson” from Jeff Pepper, a presentation by one of our most accomplished members and her incredible achievements with her dogs, a look into therapy work and a presentation by the Center for Canine Cognition. There is something for everybody and we always have a good time. Enjoy the summer and I look forward to seeing you at an upcoming meeting or out in the world having fun with your dog. A Very Special Star !! Abbie Einstein, a Golden Retriever owned, trained, and loved by HVGRC member Mike Jones, was honored by being chosen as the Grand Marshall for the American Cancer Society’s Westchester Bark for Life event on April 10. A cancer survivor herself, Abbie and her canine sister, Smartie Jones, are both certified by Therapy Dog International . Mike was inspired to pursue a life of service with his dogs, after Abbie was allowed to visit him when he was hospitalized several years ago. Abbie Einstein in her Grand Marshall costume. This visit meant so much to him that he has committed to sharing the love and support of his therapy dogs with other patients. The Einstein part of her name refers to Mike’s time at the Albert Einstein Hospital. Abbie’s busy schedule includes the Reading to Rover program on Mondays, and visits to an Alzheimers patient each Friday. Wednesdays and Thursdays are devoted to therapy in a dialysis unit at the Artificial Kidney Center in Yorktown. During the fall she serves as a therapy dog for the cast of the Danbury Music Center production of ”The Nutcracker”. She has also visited nursing homes, hospitals, autism halfway homes, and Newtown, Connecticut after the Sandy Hook school shootings. Abbie performs in agility as well as obedience and has an unfailing sense of what is really important. When demonstrating obedience at Meet the Breeds, she ignored her dumbbell retrieve in order to lick the faces of children lined up at the ring gates. Mike Jones with Abbie Einstein (left) and Smartie Jones Together, Abbie and Mike have overcome serious illness and committed to a life of service . She is a perfect choice for the ACS Bark for Life Grand Marshall. Abalee’s White Magic, “Casey” has 4 points toward his Championship. He is Marianna Beard’s first attempt at conformation and so far is doing pretty well. He is bred by Marianna and co-breeder Jean Ripke, and is coowned by Marianna Beard with Joanne and Ed Dobransky. Here is his record so far: Winners Dog and BOW 2 Points—Trap Falls Kennel Club April 10, 2016 Winners Dog 2 Points—Trumbull County Kennel Club May 29, 2016 Laurie Cafaro’s “Lucy” (Thornelea Twin Oak Happiness is Worth the Wait, CGC) went Best of Breed Puppy and Best of Winners at the Plainfield Kennel Club on May 30. This win was made even more special because it took place on Laurie’s birthday. Bruce and Audrey Coleman and their dogs have been busy in obedience: On the weekend of May 15 and 16 the Coleman team won three classes, a High in Trial and High Combined. They showed at the German Shepherd Specialties in Seneca Falls, New York. The weather Saturday was threatening and on Sunday it was cold and extremely windy. This made scent discrimination challenging during these outdoor shows. On Saturday Fanny earned another leg towards her UDX3 with a score of 387.5. She won the Utility B class and earned 10 OTCH points. Vinny won the Open B class with a 196.5, earned 2 OTCH points and went High in Trial On Sunday, Vinny won the Utility B class with a 191.5 and earned 6 OTCH points. He also scored a 195.5 and placed second in Open. This was also his second UDX leg. June Moskovitz reports that her “Merrie”, Cayberry Fetching a Smile to Juneper RN TDI has now added a CCA to her name. She was evaluated at our CCA on June 11. Jean Owen is thrilled to announce that Miss Smartie Pantz got her final double Q for her MACH title on July 2 at the Kruisin Kanine trial. This happened after she had been benched last spring with a broken leg. It was also the final double Q she needed to qualify for the AKC Nationals next March. Jean is a very proud Mom. 3 !! Our Stars !! Denise Ryan is proud of Ava, who got her QA2 recently. She was entered in 4 tests. In the first two, she got as far as the water blind (third series of four). In the third test she received 2nd place, making her Qualified All-Age. Then after a long break she won 1st place in her 4th test, earning her QA2 . Lois Monroe trained and handled her beautifully. Denise is so proud that her show bred fluffy Golden achieved this. Thanks to Teri Poetker for breeding her. Ava is entering Master Hunter tests now, and recently earned her 1st leg. Ava’s registered name is HR Golly G Walk the Runway Lights CCA SH QA2. Carol Russo and Paula Strazza are celebrating their new Champion! Luna (Hillock’s Sunflower Goodnight Moon) finished in style before her 2nd birthday at the Ladies Kennel Association of America show in Long Island, going BOS in back to back shows. Luna has been presented beautifully and expertly by Diana Mason throughout her successful career. Luna continued her winning ways recently with Michelle Smith Wolcott at Walkill KC and Mid Hudson KA, where she earned her first GCH points going BOS. Carol and Paula feel so fortunate to share their lives with Luna. She is an exceptional dog and they look forward to participating in many other Golden venues with Luna. 4 !! Our Stars !! Carol Russo is also so very thrilled and proud of her boy, Beckett (Picabo’s You Are My Sunshine CGCA CCA THDA NW1) at the HVGRC Super Specialty/Taconic Hills KC Cluster. In a wonderful start to the day, judge Barbara Pepper awarded him Best Veteran in the AM Specialty, handled expertly by Diana Mason This was followed by Carol’s “star-turn” with him in Sweeps where she was reminded just how hard the pros work. It has been a long time since Carol was on the other end of that lead! He seemed very happy with his large rosette! Diana went on with him to go Best Veteran in Specialty at the Hudson Valley GRC PM Specialty show under judge Richard Anton where he was also honored with a JAM! Carol was ecstatic. (She thinks he would have traded the ribbon for a chance to make friends with fellow Veteran, Jewels!) Finally, to top off the day, Beck went Best Veteran in Show at the Taconic Hills KC. Carol gives huge thanks to Diana Mason for making him shine so brightly and to the 4 judges who recognized him in such a beautiful group of Goldens and then All-Breed dogs. Beckett never stopped wagging his tail and Carol has not stopped smiling. She says, “ He is my Sunshine.” ‘ 5 Welcome New Members Nick and Karen Frustaci E-mail correction: Karen Frustaci [email protected] Nancy and Rick Ritacco 48 Fenwood Lane Wilton CT 06897 H: 203/834-0476 Cell: 203/984-3462 E-mail: [email protected] HVGRC Super Specialty 2016 HVGRC Member Placements Brian Visokay AM Specialty Open Dogs, 4th Place Cayberry Candlewood’s QB Sneak-A-Smile BN RN Owner: M Swinson-Brown 9-12 Puppy Bitch, 2nd place Abalee’s Duckn’ Donuts Owners: Francine and Howard Hellman Bred-by Exhibitor Bitch, 4th Place Amberglo’s Turbo Owner: Karen Fennikoh Open Bitch, 2nd Place Cross Creek EZ Breezy Cover Girl NA NAJ NF Owner: Chris Miele Open Bitch, 4th Place Amberglo’s Time For A Moondance CGC Owners: Fennikoh/C Phiefer Non Regular Veteran Dog, 8-10 1st Place Picabo’s You Are My Sunshine THDA CGCA Owners: C Russo/B Govan PM Specialty Bred-by Exhibitor Bitch, 2nd Place Open Dogs, 4th Place Amberglo’s Turbo Owner: Karen Fennikoh Cayberry Candlewood’s QB Sneak-A-Smile BN RN Owner: M Swinson-Brown 6 HVGRC Super Specialty 2016 Raffle Report Lorraine Cusimano As you all know from previous emails this year’s Specialty Raffle was a huge success and I would again like to thank all of you who gave so generously. Those 87 baskets and displays were made possible by you: the members. I made use of everything you gave me. No contribution is ever too small or insignificant. Sometimes a basket is assembled but it really needs one more related item and than all of sudden I get a donation from someone with just the perfect addition and the basket is then complete. Believe it or not, donations have already started to come in for next year. A big THANK YOU to Chris Miele for the “Snugglesafe” – a Microwave Heat Pad that provides up to ten hours of warmth. A coveted item for anyone who has to be outside during the cold weather but especially loved by agility people who have to sit on cold seats in cold barns. Great idea Chris!! A big THANK YOU to Giselle Graham who has given me another basket – a two handled oval with green and red trim which is a perfect size. She also filled it with a Poodle welcome sign, two Golden Retriever note pads, a Collie beer stein, an adorable “best in show’ ornament and a stoneware food bowl. Much appreciated Giselle!! Keep the raffle in mind throughout the year. If you have things you don’t really want or need or get a gift you don’t particularly like please consider the raffle before you give away or throw out. Many baskets are built around these items. Also, don’t forget the raffle when you see great bargains, discounts, sales and clearances. They are wonderful ways to add to the raffle baskets. con’t p. 8 7 Finally, if you know someone who would like to promote their business, the raffle is a terrific way to accomplish this through a simple display or basket, maybe a gift certificate, or discounts to online merchandise. This year we had several new businesses and their offerings and displays provided a major contribution to the success of the raffle. Looking forward to the fun and success of next year’s raffle and having all of you involved to make it happen. Thanks so much and have a great summer!! Lorraine Cusimano Raffle Chair HVGRC CCA 2016 The HVGRC CCA was held in FDR Park in Yorktown Heights, NY on Saturday, June 11, 2016. Chairwoman Carol Russo reports the event was a great success with 18 dogs entered and 18 qualifying for the CCA title with very consistent scoring. The club was fortunate to have 3 excellent evaluators: Christine Miele, Barbara Pepper and Berna Hart Welch. We are grateful to these ladies who spent the entire day evaluating in detail, each of the Goldens entered. A delicious lunch was provided to all participants and workers. The weather, while unpredictable in the tradition of most HVGRC Specialty weekends, provided downpours and sunshine, but we were safe under the large tents! A heartfelt thank you to Brian Visokay, Lynn Paraskeva, Nora Hayes, Lynn and Jonathan Halpern, Karen Frustaci, Kathy Eddy, Fran Hellman and Laurie Cafaro for volunteering to help make this event a huge success! It was great to see so many club members, especially after our long and exhausting Specialty/Obedience and Rally Trial weekend. CH Hillock’s Sunflower Goodnight Moon Owner: Carol Russo/ Paula Strazza/ Tammy Tomlinson Call Name: Luna Where to start? The day I called my dear friend Paula from N.E.S.G.A. jesting that we should co-own a bitch together? The day we drove 6 hours to PA for our pick bitch and I could not put the small, fluffy blondish puppy down once she was in my arms? The day she fetched the wing Paula threw and she learned what “place” meant? The happy days, winning Best Puppy in Show at the Chesapeake and Lenape Golden Specialties? The many days following when she was recognized by almost every judge who saw her with a blue ribbon? The amazing day at Big Apple Sporting when she took the Major and BOS for her first points from the 12-18 class? The days at shows I spent watching her ringside, so serious, so beautiful, not recognizing the playful puppy we knew at home? Days of WB/BOW/BOS and BOB from the 12-18 class and finally her moment, finishing a Champion? All those days do not compare to the ones she spends curled up close, snuggling on the bed, but boy, they sure were fun! Luna is a very special girl and we can’t wait to see what she will do next. In case of a tie both names will be engraved on the trophy. My Stardust Melody, UD RN MH WCX QAA Owner: Susan Handelman Call name: Heather Owned, trained and loved by Sue Handelman. My little Heather continues to delight me with her achievements in field events. At this writing, in April 2016, she has a total of 17 life-time Master Hunter passes besides her Qualified All-Age status in Field Trials. This year she qualified for the Master National by earning 6 Master legs between August 1, 2014 and July 31, 2015. There was a conflict in dates and we chose to go to the GRCA National Specialty, where she qualified in Master. Completely amateur trained and handled, she is both talented and responsive. I am so lucky to have her. 2015 Obedience Challenge Trophy OTCH U-CDX Rushmore’s Excaliber Can Do UDX2 JH MX MXJ RE WCX OBHF This trophy, dedicated in 2006 and re-dedicated in 2008 by Dorita Slate, is awarded to the HVGRC member-owned Golden Retriever who accumulates the greatest number of points during the calendar year. Cross Creek Waltz Right In OA OAJ NF Owner: Christine Miele Call Name: Matilda Matilda’s mother was BG, aka Bad Girl, who has won all kinds of awards in the Tenafly, NJ school district as a therapy dog. I can’t say enough good things about her. Annual Awards cont’d p. 15 14 Sue Handelman My Stardust Melody UD RN MH WCX QAA “Heather” Heather finished her Utility title in March 2015, with a first and two second places. She is such a happy worker that it is a pleasure to be in the ring with her. Once she learns her exercises, she is a very consistent performer. She also believes everyone she sees is in need of a greeting, so there is a constant yin and yang in her personality between work and play. Lynn and Jonathan Halpern Overlook’s Sutton Downpour CD RA CGC CCA “William” Despite William’s antics and lack of an “off-switch” he managed this year to achieve his CD, RA and CGC titles. This was all in one year! His favorite activity is doing “zoomies” around the ring after he goes over a high jump. We are working on altering this behavior so he can get his CDX and RE in as few trials as possible. He loves to swim and does so every day while in Florida. We are working on Utility exercises as well as the Open routines. He works best after a long swim! We really love him despite all his shenanigans! We hope his membership in the Morris Animal Study will help both canine and human health to find the answer to the scourge of cancer.
