Dear Distinguished readers, Welcome to the second edition
Dear Distinguished readers,
Welcome to the second edition of the Ubaya
Office of International Affairs Newsletter.
We are pleased to dedicate this edition to
the 40th Anniversary of Ubaya. Indeed, 11th
March 2008 is commemorated as the 40th
Anniversary of Ubaya. In the midst of massive
changes of globalisation, everyone would admit
that sustaining the existence as an institution and
even as an individual up to 40 years is not an easy
task. In order to sustain, all kinds of institution
including higher education institution needs to
substantially be capable of facing and responding
barriers, ignorance, difficulties and challenges.
In Indonesia, the proof generally shows that
merely small number of Indonesian universities
can successfully grow to the age of 40 years.
Amongst that small number, Ubaya is proud to be
one of them. For 40 years, Ubaya as one of the
leading private universities in Indonesia has
stood firmly to provide quality education to societies.
The Anniversary theme of 40 Years of
Excellence; Dedicated to be a World Class Univer sity expresses the biggest gratitude and tribute of
Ubaya to societies. Societies, linguistically is only
an ordinary plural word, but if we take a deeper
understanding, it is the keyword that makes the
40 Years of Excellence possible. Interaction,
appreciation, respect, support, and recognition
from societies have brought and lifted Ubaya to
reach its 4th decade Anniversary.
Ubaya is a university dedicated to be a World
Class University. For years, the university has
deeply committed to its International Partnership.
Student & Staff Exchange, International Dual
Degree Programme, International Guest Lecture
are some forms of partnership that have been
successfully developed with partners all over the
world. All of the partnership developed with the
substantial aim to deliver Ubaya’s graduates to be
internationally qualified and eventually progress
the university to be a World Class University.
Last but not least, this Newsletter is
published quarterly and aimed to keep anyone
updated of any current progress and activities of
Ubaya’s International Partnership. The Newsletter
is issued in printed and e-Newsletter version.

The increasing demand of employees who are capable of competing in national and
international business environment as well as facing the challenges in globalisation
area has motivated Ubaya to open international programme. The event called “The
Launching of International Programmes of Universitas Surabaya” held on 24th Novem ber 2007 could be remembered as one of the memorable events for Ubaya, as in that
event, the university has launched its first international programme.
At the opening of the event, Prof. Wibisono Hardjopranoto , Rector Ubaya
welcomed the audiences whom the majority were High School students with brief
introduction about Ubaya and the three international programmes launched. “Today,
Ubaya will proudly launch three international programmes called: International
Business Networking (IBN), Professional Accounting (PA) and Dual Degree on Informa tion Technology. Ubaya, through these international programmes, once again has
proven that its curriculum has been internationally recognised and accepted worldwide”
said Prof. Hardjopranoto.
Following the opening, Dr. Sudjoko Efferin , Dean Faculty of Economics Ubaya
delivered presentation on IBN and PA. Dr. Efferin explained that IBN and PA are interna tional undergraduate degree programmes that will be fully delivered in English. IBN
concentrates on international and networking aspects of business and management,
while PA prepares the graduates to be a professional accountant with international
competencies. He highlighted “In collaboration with Rotterdam Business School (RBS),
the Netherlands, IBN also offers the experiences to study in RBS and eventually earn
double degree of Sarjana Ekonomi from Ubaya and Bachelor of Administration from
RBS.”
Sincerely yours,
The third session of the event was presented by Benny Lianto , Dean Faculty of
Engineering Ubaya. “Dual Degree on Information Technology is the programme devel oped by Informatics Engineering Department, Faculty of Engineering Ubaya, and Faculty
of Information Technology, Queensland University of Technology (QUT), Australia” he
explained. Mr. Lianto added “With the scheme of Semester I-IV at Ubaya and Semester
V-VII at QUT, students will be benefited in term of saving time, and money as well as
gaining international experiences. They who graduate will earn two bachelor degrees of
Sarjana Teknik (S.T.) from Ubaya, and Bachelor of Information Technology (B.IT) from
QUT.”

We wish you all a most rewarding and
enjoyable reading.
As time will prove someone’s maturity, at the age of forty Ubaya has proven that it
is deserved to be called a multicultural university with a global community. Having a
strong will to improve the quality through the academic acknowledgment by welcoming
students from university abroad is quite a challenge for Ubaya. This becomes one of the
steps to prove its willingness to be a world class university. Therefore, every semester
Ubaya conducts classes taught in English to give a chance for international students to
have an experience studying in Ubaya and give an opportunity for Indonesian students
to prove their competency being involved in a class which is taught in English.
Ubaya International Students in
Even Semester 2007-2008
This semester, Ubaya hosts fourteen international students from three different
countries. They are from Université de La Rochelle - France, Rotterdam Business
School - the Netherlands, Universiteit Maastricht - the Netherlands, and for the first
time ever, Guangxi University - China. Besides taking classes taught in English, some of
the students are studying Bahasa Indonesia. By studying Bahasa Indonesia, they are
expected to be able to learn the local culture and socialise easily with local students,
moreover with the local people. The ability to communicate in Bahasa Indonesia will
benefit them not only academically but also culturally since they will involve with the
daily custom of Surabayanese. Good interaction between international and local
students will undoubtedly enhance the global atmosphere in Ubaya campus.
Recognised as one of the leading private universities in Indonesia, Ubaya
has once again been given an honourable opportunity to invite and welcome
highly regarded Indonesian political figures. It was Monday, 17th December
2007, when Ubaya was visited by His Excellency (HE) Sri Sultan Hameng
kubuwono X , the Hereditary King of the historical Yogyakarta Sultanate in
Indonesia, and is currently the Elected Governor of the modern Yogyakarta
Special Region; Dr. Akbar Tanjung , former Head of the People's Representative
Council (DPR), and former Indonesian Minister; and,
Prof. Dr. Ramlan
Surbakti , former Vice Chairman of Indonesian National Election Commission
(KPU). The three political figures were invited to be the panellists on the Panel
Discussion of “Party system and the future of Indonesianism” organised by
Ubaya in collaboration with Indonesian Rector Forum (FRI). For approximately
two hours, the participants whom were academicians and capitalists, were
pointed to the issue of multi-party system in Indonesia.
HE Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X highlighted that party system will help
the democracy in Indonesia, yet, occupying too many political parties will not be
effective. As a pluralism country that populated by people with numerous races,
and religions, it will be better for Indonesia to simplify the multi-party system.
Simpler multi-party system will certainly enhance the effectiveness in electing
the Indonesian president.
Dr. Akbar Tanjung figured the fact there were 48 political parties participated
on the 1999 Indonesian General Election, and it decreased to 24 parties on the

2004 election. Yet, it is going to be 80 political parties that will
compete on the 2009 Indonesian General Election. Supporting the
statement from HE Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X, Dr. Akbar
Tanjung stressed out that the number of parties is currently too
many, and it needs to be reduced to achieve greater effectiveness
and efficiency.
Biotechnology nowadays has been emerg ing as one of the fastest growing sectors of the
contemporary societies. It has captured the
attention of researchers from various fields
and disciplines as well as of the general public,
due to its importance not only in the industries
but also in affecting various aspects including
lifestyle of the society. Health care, agriculture
and environmental remediation have been
revolutionised due to the development of
Biotechnology. Initiated by this rationale,
Ubaya has committed to establish Faculty of
Biotechnology in 2004. Up to today, Ubaya
has been known as one of only a small
number of Indonesian universities that offer

delivering his lecture
Since the year of establishment, the faculty
has successfully been developing its linkages not only nationally but also internationally.
Good international linkages have enabled Ubaya to frequently invite scholars on Biotech nology from overseas university/institution. A week after the New Year of 2008, the faculty
has once again organised a guest lecture session delivered by an international scholar.
This time, the session with the topic of “Application of Pharmaceutical Microbes to
increase Agricultural Crops Yields”, was delivered by Prof. Chris Franco , Head, Depart ment of Medical Biotechnology, School of Medicine, Flinders University, Australia.
Prof. Franco shared the application of endophytic
actinobacteria as inoculants for agricultural as a new
concept in increasing grain yields by controlling the losses
caused by the major fungal root pathogens. Actinobacte ria are well known as producers of antibiotics and other
useful ‘interactive’ metabolites; and their role as
endophytes working inside of the plant makes them more
effective in promoting plant growth and crop yield via a
range of mechanisms including nutrient acquisition,
phytohormone production, removal of contaminants,
direct suppression of pathogens via antibiosis or competi tion, and induction of plant defence responses.
The use of endophytic actinobacterial inocula is being
developed as a reliable, non-disruptive solution to
enhance grain yields in a manner that uses natural micro bial resources to promote sustainability. This technology
also has the potential to be applied to other cropping
systems, including pasture production, horticultural crops
and floriculture.
Following the guest lecture was discussion to explore
potential cooperation between Ubaya and Flinders Faculty
of Biotechnology. Curriculum and staff development in
Biotechnology are the two areas to which Flinders Univer sity was keen to initiate the cooperation in.

The admittance of 40 Years of Excellence to Ubaya does not only
come from nation-wide, but also comes from international-wide. It is
proven by the PhD scholarship awarded by one of the Ubaya’s partners,
University of Groningen (RUG), the Netherlands to Ms. Christina
Avanti , lecturer in Faculty of Pharmacy Ubaya. Started this year, Ms.
Christina will undertake her Doctorate degree under Groningen
Research Institute of Pharmacy, RUG. RUG is one of the leading univer sities in the world founded in 1614. It is known world-wide with its
excellence on academic teaching and research. Frederik Zernike,
Nobel Prize receiver in Physics, Heike Kamerlingh Onnes, Nobel Prize
receiver in Physics, and Johann Bernoulli, pioneer in the field of calculus
are three notable alumni that marks the quality of academic teaching
and research in RUG.
With the research topic on “Hot medicines: breaking the cold
chain requirement for polypeptide-based priority medicines”, she will
focus the research on the development
of liquid and dry formulations for these
drugs that are stable under tropical
conditions. Oxytocin and insulin are two
polypeptide medicines which rapidly
degrade when stored outside the
refrigerator. Consequently, application
of these drugs in developing countries
and especially in the tropics is limited
because they require a cold chain. At
the completion of the study, Ms. Avanti
will return to Ubaya and share her
knowledge to enrich academic process
in the Faculty.

November 2007, Ubaya in conjunction with AIESEC has warmly
welcomed Hermawan Kartajaya , the most notable Indonesian
marketing guru to deliver the seminar “Marketing Yourself @ the Flat
world, from Campus Life to Business World”. Also present on the seminar
was Prof. Dr. Hooi Den Huan , Associate Dean Nanyang Business
School, Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore.
Hermawan Kartajaya convinced around 900 students as audience the
most effective way, the students should react to cope with real business
world nationally and internationally. ”Campus is the best place to learn
and prepare ourselves before entering the real business world, but
achieving a summa cum-laude on the campus will not guarantee your
career. That achievement will rather be worthless if you do not have
integrity”
“As the world becomes flatter, we are now live in borderless area, our
competitors are not only from our country but also foreigners. Do not feel
to be inferior because we are Indonesian. Business world will not really
observe which country you are coming from, but they will rather respect
you as individual. It’s about you, you’re the company” said Mr. Kartajaya.
He added “As the company you must be capable of PDB (Positioning,
Differentiating and Branding) yourself. On the business world, we do not
have to be the best but we need to be different”.
Hermawan Kartajaya is standing in the middle
Hermawan Kartajaya is distinguished as one of the “50 Gurus Who
Have Shaped the Future of Marketing”. He is the first Indonesian to enter
the international league in marketing and received an acknowledgement
from Philip Kotler, the World’s Guru of Marketing. In the last few years, Mr.
Kartajaya actively collaborates with Philip Kotler in writing books. Warren
J. Keegan, World Marketing Scholar acknowledged Hermawan Kartajaya

Feel the importance of international collaboration and network, Ubaya has
extended its international network by signing 2 new International Cooperation Agreements with Hanyang University, Korea and Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Malaysia.
With the intention to enrich the students and faculty members with academic
knowledge and cross culture experience from different perspective and country, the
initial step of the cooperation with Hanyang University will concentrate on pursuing
In addition, Sabah is a great city to foster quality research
which will be a great benefit to Malaysia. Such research may
not only contribute greatly to the practical and theoretical
significance of psychology in general but also assist govern ment policies. Psychological services in the community are
very few, and research is needed into many psychological
issues affecting the community. Considering this potential,
the joint research programme particularly on Psychology will
be the focus of the cooperation with Universiti Malaysia
Sabah. In recent days, Faculty of Psychology from both univer sities have started the discussion and are on the way to begin
the research.
Ubaya friendly welcomed a visit from City
University of Hong Kong last December. City
University of Hong Kong (CityU) is distin guished as one of the leading universities in
the world demonstrated by its achievement to
be constantly ranked on the Top World’s 200
Universities released by the Times Higher
Education Supplement World University Rank ing (THES World University Ranking).
During the visit, Dr. Yuanto Kusnadi ,
Assistant Professor from Department of
Accountancy, CityU delivered a guest lecture
session to students from Faculty of Econom ics Ubaya as well as discussed the potential
collaboration between Ubaya and CityU.

Another international recognition to Ubaya
comes from World Science Forum (WSF) when
Dr. Lieke Riadi , Vice Rector for Academic and
Student Affairs Ubaya was the only Indonesian
scientist invited to the WSF 2007. The WSF is
respected as one of the most prestigious scien tific events in the world. As a prestigious event,
the participants of this forum are only those
notable scientists who are cordially invited by
the WSF Council. It brought together 400
world’s leading scientists, scholars, politicians
including Presidents, Nobel Laureates, and
senior political decision makers from over 60
countries.
Held for the third time, the WSF 2007
emerged the theme of "Investing in Knowledge:
Investing in the Future". It is held every 2 years
in Budapest, Hungary and is jointly organised by
Before the guest lecture session was the
discussion held in the Meeting room of the
faculty. Present on the meeting were Dr.

2007 forum was HE László Sólyom , President
of Hungary; HE Stjepan Mesić , President of
Croatia; HE Heinz Fischer , President of
Austria, and HE Karolos Papoulias , President
of Greece and Werner Arber , 78 years old
Swiss microbiologist, the winner of Nobel Prize
in Physiology or Medicine in 1978 for his work
in molecular genetics.
The forum stressed on the essential of scien tists and politicians to support each other
aimed to achieve sustainable resource devel opment and address existing problems
connected to global changes. The cost of
investing in knowledge (ie. science) is expen sive, therefore science must be considered as
compliment to the development and achieve ment of the Faculty. The discussion was
prompted by the arrangement to develop joint
research on Finance between Dr. Kusnadi and
Dr. Mahadwartha.
Presenting the main theme of “The Risk
and Return in Financial Management”, Dr.
Kusnadi called on the importance of observ ing the Risk and Return before taking particu lar action in Financial Management. There will
always be risk and return involved in Financial
Management. Potential risk is in proportion
with the return. The potential return rises with
an increase in risk. Investment that has a
relatively low risk will typically feature on fairly
small return. On the other hand, investing in
something with a high risk factor will present
on higher returns.

a capital that must be utilised not only for
strengthening current developments but also
for assessing long-term effects. In order to get
the most of it, politicians must pay special
attention to scientists and academics. Scien tists are obliged to provide and recommend
forecasts to politicians and also develop
technologies. In exchange, politicians are
responsible to operate the recommendations
given by scientists.
Dr. Lieke Riadi is currently a senior lecturer
on Chemical Department, Faculty of Engineer ing Ubaya as well as researcher on Centre for
Environmental Study Ubaya. As a scientist, her
dedication, contribution and achievements to
education and scientific area have brought her
to be recognised nationwide and worldwide.
