2015 Issue 1 valvescommunity ® Information for customers and partners Kunde FRoSTA Title Story Tiefkühlkost mitelectricity hohem takes The routes our – substations are the hubs Best Employer Award for HEROSE human resources policy 4 x per year How Dräger in Lübeck tests the results of the HEROSE degreasing process Editorial Editorial Substations – hubs in our electricity grid Dear readers, the energy revolution in our country is an enormous challenge for all concerned. Two of the central questions are how to transport most of the wind energy which is developed in the North to the South of Germany and how to bring the energy which is generated offshore onto the land. You can read about the role which our ENERGY division is playing in this billion Euro business in our title story. I was delighted with our award in the competition for "Hamburg's best employer 2015" in the category "Compatibility of work and private life". This award confirms what we have practised at HEROSE for many years: finding individual solutions which optimally combine private life and work together with our employees. I wish you a pleasant start to spring! Dirk M. Zschalich Managing Director HEROSE has supplied, tried and tested valves for oil-cooled transformers for many years. Product Manager Thorsten Zeug: “An attractive market, especially for the future” In principle, our electricity grid can be compared with a road network. There are motorways for long distances, main roads for medium distances and simple local roads which lead to our houses. These are interconnected with crossroads and junctions. The motorways are the very high voltage lines with a voltage of 220,000 or 380,000 volts (corresponding to 220 or 380 kilovolts). The higher the voltage the lower the energy losses during the transportation of the electricity. To transport the energy over very long distances as efficiently as possible, the electricity is transformed to the highest possible voltage at the places where it is generated, namely at the power stations. This is done with transformers. Most of these transformers are cooled with oil, in some cases with quantities of up to 40 tons. HEROSE valves for oil-cooled transformers have proven themselves for decades in heavy-duty use for electricity generation and distribution. At present, these include gate valves with dimensions from DN 25 to DN 250 (see also page 3). After this, the energy is transported via very high voltage overhead power lines over hundreds of kilometres to the consumption centres. Because of this, the 220 and 380 kilovolt lines are often also referred to as the "transportation grid". Substation Wahle Title Story In transformers like these, up to 40 tons of oil are needed for cooling The high voltage grid with a voltage of 110 kilovolt is connected to the very high voltage grid. Similar to main roads, this is used for the rough distribution of energy within the region. After this, medium and low voltage lines with a voltage of 10, 20 or 30 kilovolt bring the energy directly into our towns, usually via underground cables. After a further transformation, the electricity in our plug sockets only has a voltage of 230 or 400 Volt. What is the role of the substations? Here, the power lines with various voltage levels meet and interconnect – just like at a crossroads. Via the very high voltage lines with 220 or 380 kilovolt, the electricity is transported from the power stations to the substations, which it is transformed down to the lower level of 110 kilovolt. The same process is carried out at the next stages. The different voltage levels are coupled together with large transformers. From the substations, the electricity is then supplied to the consumers. The substations collect the electricity from the power stations, convert it to a lower voltage level and distribute it further. This process is increasingly being used in the reverse direction. Over the past decade, in addition to the large central power stations, an increasing number of decentralised, regenerative generation plants have been installed. These 2 include domestic solar energy systems on roofs as well as large wind parks on the coast and out at sea. The local and regional grids collect the regeneratively generated energy and transport it to the nearest substations. The offshore substations constructed far out at sea are especially interesting for HEROSE. Thorsten Zeug, Product Manager ENERGY at HEROSE since June 2013: "Especially here, far out from the coast, components need to be of the very highest quality. A leaking gate valve would be dangerous, not simply from an environmental point of view. To make a repair, 40 tons of oil would need to be drained off, which would involve a downtime lasting several weeks with unforeseeable financial consequences." Zeug believes that HEROSE is well prepared: "Our valves for offshore use are ideally suitable due to special alloys and coatings. This has been confirmed with corrosion tests in salt water." Zeug has an ambitious aim: "We intend to considerably increase the share of the ENERGY division in the total results during the coming years." For this, the graduate process technician often has to travel. In this time, he is in Dubai at the MEE exhibition from 2 to 4 March. Thorsten Zeug believes that the greatest competitive advantage of HEROSE is "the fact that we have a great deal of experience in constructing valves for transformers – and that we can cater for customers' individual requirements." HEROSE valves are also suitable for offshore substations Grid operator TENNET Tennet is Germany's main operator of high voltage electricity grids. The German subsidiary of a Dutch company has 1,000 employees and is responsible for a 21,000 kilometre high voltage grid, which covers 40 % of Germany. Tennet also plays a leading role in the planning of major power routes which will transport regeneratively produced electricity from the North to the South of Germany. valvescommunity 1 / 2015 HEROSE GMBH Substations are like large crossroads Product Manager Thorsten Zeug with a gate valve Our range of products for oil-cooled transformers Seawater and weather-resistant valves, which smoothly and dependably control the oil circulation of transformers to safeguard the power supply Three-way plug cocks Types 14060/14170/14175 Gate valves Type 09320 Gate valves Type 09420 Outlet valves Type 03199 Ball valves Types 15210/15215 Sizes: DN25, DN50, DN80 Working pressure: up to 5 bar Temperatures: -40°C to +115°C Connections: Flange (DIN EN) Material: Bronze (CC491K) Sizes: DN25-DN250 Working pressure: up to 6 bar Temperatures: -50°C to +120°C Connections: Flange (DIN EN, ANSI) Material: Brass (CW614N), bronze (CC491K) or seawater resistant bronze (CC480K) Sizes: DN25-DN100 Working pressure: up to 6 bar Temperatures: -50°C to +120°C Connections: Flange (DIN EN, ANSI) Material: Brass (CW614N), bronze (CC491K) or seawater resistant bronze (CC480K) Sizes: DN15, DN32 Working pressure: up to 6 bar Temperatures: -50°C to +115°C Connections: Flange (DIN EN, ANSI) Material: Brass (CW614N), bronze (CC491K) or seawater resistant bronze (CC480K) Sizes: DN15-DN150 Working pressure: up to 40 bar Temperatures: -50°C to +230°C Connections: Flange (DIN EN, ANSI) Material: Stainless steel (1.4408) and cast steel (1.0619) valvescommunity 1 / 2015 HEROSE GMBH 3 Internal "This is what we practice" HEROSE Managing Director Zschalich on the award for "Compatibility of private and professional life" HEROSE Managing Director Dirk Zschalich (right) and Human Resources Manager Markus Schröder receiving the prize in Hamburg High praise for HEROSE: In the competition "Hamburg's best employer 2015" the HEROSE received an award in the category "Compatibility of private and professional life". Randomly selected employees were given a questionnaire which they filled in anonymously. Their good assessment resulted in the award which was presented to HEROSE Managing Director Dirk Zschalich in Hamburg on 4 February. In the responses by the employees there was widespread agreement with the argument that flexible handling of the subject of compatibility of work and private life has always been practised by HEROSE. No matter whether an employee's child suddenly becomes ill or if a longer break from work is necessary. "We don't have any glossy brochures on the subject. We practice this philosophy in the form of individual solutions. That was always the case," says Managing Director Zschalich. Human Resources Manager Markus Schröder adds: "Obviously, the work in hand must be done, but we are very flexible with regard to the time structure." Michael Bentz, 50, who works in the technical customer support and has been with HEROSE for nearly 10 years, was able to reduce his working hours to 4 35 hours per week after he became a widower and suddenly had to look after his two children. "The company showed great understanding about this." Anne Schiemann, who has worked in the assembly of safety valves for HEROSE for twelve years had other reasons for reducing her weekly working hours: "Nine years ago I was diagnosed as having multiple sclerosis. After two severe attacks in 2010 I now become tired very quickly. Because of this, my doctors recommended a reduction in my working hours. Since then, Anne Schiemann only works half days. "I am very thankful for this concession, as after all, I had a full-time job." The third example is Nikolaj Ehmke, 29. He has been with HEROSE since 2006, works in the Development department and has completed a dual course of study in Mechanical Engineering. A few months ago, Ehmke started an in-service course of study at the Nordakademie in Hamburg, with the aim of achieving a Master of Management and Business Administration qualification. "This year alone, I have been given six weeks paid leave by the company." At present, HEROSE is enabling three employees to carry out an in-service course of study. Anne Schiemann was given the opportunity to only work Nikolaj Ehmke is on an in-service course of study Competition The competition for suitable employees is increasing noticeably. In this competitive situation it is becoming increasingly important for companies to present themselves as attractive employers. Against this background, Prof. Werner Sarges from the Helmut-Schmidt Univiersity in Hamburg, the IMWF Institute for Management and Business Research, alster radio 106.8 and the Hamburger Abendblatt newspaper initiated the annual "Hamburg's best employer" competition in 2009. valvescommunity 1/ 2015 HEROSE GMBH HEROSE departments Part 11 Will there soon be a HEROSE app? Public relations is an important aspect of the work of the Marketing department and setting the strategic direction of the company half days. Michael Bentz works a 35 hour week valvescommunity 1 / 2015 HEROSE GMBH Marketing includes all of a company’s activities in market analysis, advertising, and targeted product development with the objective of increasing sales. At HEROSE, Mario Esche is responsible for this important field. The 33-year-old industrial engineering graduate has worked for HEROSE since 2012. He is assisted by Oke Rusch, who was trained in the profession of industrial manager here at HEROSE. Esche divides his tasks into two main categories: operative and strategic marketing. "On the basis of analyses of the market and our competitors, we assist the strategic direction of the company, in the decision of which products to concentrate on and the setting of targets", says Esche. Investigations by the department have played a major role in the "HEROSE 2022" programme. Esche: "For example, all of our figures confirm that it is entirely right to intensively promote the field of LNG." In contrast to strategic marketing, there is operative marketing. Public relations forms an essential part of this. "For example, the magazine which you are now reading is a typical operative marketing instrument", says Esche. Just like the HEROSE internet presentation, it is used to inform business partners and potential customers of all that they need to know about products and new developments. The Marketing department is also responsible for placing advertisements in trade magazines. The important topic of "exhibitions" is also part of the agenda. Esche: "HEROSE The HEROSE Marketing Team Mario Esche (right) and Oke Rusch participates in between five and seven exhibitions each year throughout the world, as well as many conferences. We coordinate the activities with our advertising agency and are also responsible for the design of our exhibition stands, for the catering and sending out the invitations." The Valves Community Workshops, which are concerned with the subject of "cryogenics" and which are held four times per year in Bad Oldesloe are also the responsibility of the Marketing department. The challenges for the future? "We are noticing that our customers are becoming increasingly digitally orientated", says Esche. A possible consequence of the increasing access figures in the field of mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets is our own HEROSE app. "We are working on this." 5 Internal Cleaned and degreased for oxygen service – Top values regularly confirmed Dräger in Lübeck analyses control plates from Bad Oldesloe four times per year Sebastian Ohly with the degreasing machine Karl-Heinz Pannwitz nods in confirmation. The infra-red spectrometer shows the chemical engineer at Dräger in Lübeck what he has already known from HEROSE for many years: The oil content of the submitted control plates is far below the specified values. The device only shows 0.03 milligrams per square centimetre. Five milligrams, i.e. more than 150 times this value would still comply with the statutory standard. When globe and other valves are used in industrial plant, it is usual to reduce Karl-Heinz Pannwitz with a sample plate from HEROSE friction by lubricating the moving thread (spindle thread) with oil and grease. In most cases this does not cause any problems. However it can cause serious accidents in the case of valves which are used for oxygen service. Why is this? In an atmosphere which is enriched with oxygen, oil and grease can ignite spontaneously – and explosively. In oxygen equipment, grease and oil often cause a chain reaction which can ultimately result in metals igniting or melting. In such cases, the remains of the melted or burnt metal are ejected from the valve body and oxygen can then escape. This causes an intense and rapid spread of the fire to flammable materials outside of the equipment. HEROSE valves cater for this by the use of especially suitable pairs of materials, constructional design, careful deburring of each individual component – in some cases by hand – and high precision assembly under almost clean room conditions. All of Welcome to the ACHEMA 2015 HEROSE will be exhibiting on Stand G23 in Hall 8 From 15 to 19 June, the Frankfurt exhibition grounds will once again host the ACHEMA – the world's leading exhibition for chemical technology and the processing industry. As in previous years, HEROSE will have its own stand at the exhibition – in Hall 8, where pumps, compressors and valves are exhibited. Managing Director Dirk Zschalich: "The ACHEMA is a meeting point for the global valves industry, which of course we cannot miss." The 80 square metre 6 stand in the new design is divided into the areas CRYOGENIC and INDUSTRY. In addition to the familiar range of products, we will also be presenting innovations and additions to the product ranges. You can look forward to seeing new products from the series of safety and globe valves. Visit us on our Stand G23 in Hall 8. The stand team will be pleased to advise you. Plan your visit now and contact us for an appointment or your valvescommunity 1 / 2015 HEROSE GMBH the materials which are used are tested with regard to their suitability for use in combination with oxygen by the German materials testing facility 'Bundesanstalt für Materialprüfung (BAM)' using test procedures according to DIN EN 197 To ensure freedom from oil and grease, regardless of its future use, each valve passes through a specially developed cleaning process. The results of cleaning are regularly monitored by Dräger in Lübeck, who has a license for this. "HEROSE has now been our regular guest for 14 years", says Chemical Engineer KarlHeinz Pannwitz. Every three months the Bad Oldesloe company sends six control plates with the dimensions 10 x 10 centimetres to Lübeck to have the effectiveness of the degreasing machine tested. Pannwitz on the testing method: "The plates are first washed in perchlorethylene and then the liquid which is obtained is analysed in an infra-red spectrometer." The results are documented, so that HEROSE can prove the almost complete freedom from oil and grease in its valves at any time. The requirements for freedom from oil and grease are subject to the European standard EN 12300 "Cleanliness for cryogenic service". The limiting value of 500 mg/m2 which this standard specifies must be considerably undershot, as in some customer specifications only 100 mg/m2 are permissible. With a special cleaning process, HEROSE achieves a purity value which is far lower than this. Therefore, all HEROSE cryogenic valves up to DN150 are suitable for use with oxygen – and special indication of freedom from oil and grease is not necessary in the order.
