Alpine Hikes
We only recommend Alpine hikes for hikers that fulfil the following requirements: In
addition to sturdy footwear and weather-adequate clothing we suggest bringing a topography map. Furthermore, surefootedness, head for heights, familiarity and knowledge
about the potential dangers in the mountains, as well as a good physical condition are
of paramount importance. In some areas the trail leads through terrains with no visible
path, across snowfields and coarse gravel. We cannot guarantee man-made provisions. If
you are adequately prepared for the challenge, you will be rewarded with our beautiful
Alpine mountain world.

Arosa Rothorn
The trail passes the Schwellisee lake and Älplisee lake, towards Schafälpli before taking a left turn which is followed by a steep and challenging ascent to the Erzhorn
peak. Thereafter, the route continues to the Arosa Rothorn at 2,980m altitude, the
highest mountain in Arosa terrain. This hike requires surefootedness and head for
heights. Blue-white sign posts mark the trail. As of the Erzhorn peak the route can
only be detected by trail tracks. Once at the top, the view across the mountain panorama compensates for any hardship. You can either return along the same route or
descend to the Ramoz Hut and hike through the Welschtobel back to the Isel.

Long-distance Hikes
Along with the Schanfigg Alpine Trail, the Santiago de Camino Trail, the Wals Route, as
well as the Central-Grisons Panorama Route, there is an array of most interesting and
attractive hiking routes across Arosa and the Schanfigg valley. Follow the tracks of the
Wals people, enjoy various highlights, traverses and passages, which had historically been
used to reach Arosa, before the connection via the Schanfigg valley opened.

Long-distance Hikes
Schanfigg Alpine Trail
The two largest cities in the region of Schanfigg are Chur and Arosa, at the beginning and at the end of the valley. Small, but classy – the towns of Schanfigg. The
two sides of the Schanfigg valley are dotted with small and medium sized towns
which have been able to preserve their traditional characters, despite the development of the rather sophisticated ski resort of Arosa. Simple, yet harmonious wooden
houses, surrounded by meadows, hedges and larch forests line the windy mountain
road. Some of the most popular sights are the mountain lakes, the old Wals colonies
(Strassberg in Fondei,Sapün, Medergen) and the relatively unknown mountain peaks
of Montalin and Mattjisch Horn.
Discover the diverse cultural scenery along the Schanfigg Alpine Trail. Indulge in
local produce at one of the many traditional mountain restaurants or take a break
and enjoy a picnic amidst our beautiful Alpine flora. The Schanfigg Apline Trail starts
at Meiersboden in Chur and leads along marked hiking routes to Arosa. The return
route passes above the timberline back to Chur.

SIGN POSTS OF HIKING TRAILS
The total routes of the hiking trail network include the hiking trails, the mountain hiking trails and the Alpine hiking trails. The network is mainly located
outside the residential zone and connects recreational areas, sightseeing locations (ie. viewpoints, shores, etc.), cultural and tourist attractions and whenever
possible it includes trails of historical importance
Hiking trails are for everyone and normally prioritised for
pedestrians. Whenever possible the trails do not follow
roads that are also used by motorised vehicles. In addition,
these trails largely avoid tarmac surfaces. Steep passages are
generally shaped with steps and places with risks of falling are secured with
railing. Rivers and streams can be crossed by bridges and jetties. Hiking trails
should be accessible by everyone. The sign posts for hiking trails are yellow.
Mountain hiking trails are trails that occasionally connect
areas of rough terrain. They are often steep and narrow
and sometimes exposed. Particularly difficult passages are
generally secured with ropes or chains. Rivers and streams
must at times be crossed at a ford. Hikers on mountain hiking trails should be
experienced trekkers, have no fear of heights and be in good physical condition. You must be able to discern potential dangers in the mountains such
as falling rocks, dangers of slipping or falling, change in weather conditions,
etc. It is a prerequisite that you wear sturdy footwear with non-slip soles and
bring weather appropriate gear as well as a topographic map. The sign posts
of mountain hiking trails are yellow with a white-red-white tip and markings
are white-red-white.
Alpine hiking trails are challenging mountain hiking trails.
These type of trails sometimes lead through terrain with no
visible path, across snow fields and glaciers, coarse gravel,
gorges with falling rocks or along rocks with short climbing
passages. Constructed aid is minimal and limited to exposed locations with an
acute danger of falling. Hikers on mountain hiking trails should be experienced
trekkers, have no fear of heights and be in good physical condition. You must
be practised in handling rope and pickaxe and in climbing rocks with the help
of your hands. Moreover, you must be able to discern potential dangers in the
mountains. In addition to the equipment required for mountain hiking trails,
you must carry an altimeter and a compass. If you plan on crossing glaciers,
must also bring a rope and a pickaxe. The sign posts for Alpine hiking trails are
blue with a white-blue-white tip and markings are white-blue-white.
22
Correct Behaviour
Do not divert from the official hiking trails
Small steps and an even pace can save energy during the
uphill climb and spare the joints during the downhill walk
Do not lean backwards during the downhill walk
(It increases the risk of sliding)
Keep hydrating before you feel thirsty. The feeling of thirst arises
only after the actual need for hydration
Do not take risks in case of bad weather conditions,
feeling unwell (faintness) or any other unideal situations
THE 5 RULES OF HIKING
Keep an eye on potential weather changes
Make sure your equipment is complete and adequate
Inform a non-participating person about your route and let them
know when you have reached the destination
Follow the policy of „When in doubt, return“
Enjoy your hike with a smile on your face
EMERGENCY BEHAVIOUR
International emergency signal: give a sign six times within one
minute (i.e. call, whistle, blink). Wait for one minute. Repeat.
Answer: give a sign three times within one minute.
