Dragons
Dragons slithering
in and on clouds without wings.
Fly on it, I dare you.
I did, it’s really fun,
because I tried it.
There’s fire, water, air and earth dragon.
Can they be combined? Yes, it’s called
the mother nature dragon.
–Emily Welsh
Travels around the world took
a lot of time and patience.
Being born has been a wonderful journey.
Comets traveling across the sky flying.
Countries doing different sports and movements.
In the hot boiling summer you can travel to swim.
Saying goodbye is a very sad journey.
–Sharon Yang
Love
A heart is like rivers of blood.
My heart holds Valentine’s cards.
Hearts are like Cupids
shooting Love arrows.
A heart is a shape that is red.
My heart is a color of red.
Hearts are Cupids with wings.
My heart is like a circle filled with blood.
A heart is filled with hate of evilness.
A heart is like a squishy toy
that pumps blood.
A heart is full of joy.
Hearts are shaped like
the point of an arrow.
My heart is filled with blood
that vampires like.
–Darren Loo
Things that are...
Sand is like stars that are never counted.
Toothpicks are as sharp as a unicorn’s horn.
A puppy is as cute as cloud shapes.
Time is like a bird flying by.
Hairclips are as loud as a CRASH!
–Jessica Zheng
I’m Not
I’m not a frog jumping
around the water
I’m not a cow walking
everywhere
I’m not a girl going shopping
I’m not a boy playing
video games
I’m not a teacher telling
the kids what to do
I am a ghost going to Best Buy
to get all the video games
–Daniel Campos
Owl Body Parts
Wings are blades that cut
through the air.
A horn is a spear tip that
cuts into an opponent.
Talons are knives that cut
through things.
I am an adventurous,
funny, light-headed,
flying owl.
I am living in a tree.
–Dylan Carter
I was born in the monster, a dinosaur.
And I was born at a bird,
and I was born at mouse,
I was born at the mommy.
----------------------When I was little I liked to play at the park.
I was little and I cried.
and I liked to play with my friend.
–Jimmy Zhuang
My life is...
My life is a mystery waiting to be solved.
My life is a warm summer breeze.
My journey is to find the meaning of water.
My life is only at the beginning,
a blooming flower.
My life is a mind, wondering and thinking,
finding things out.
My life isn’t like any other life,
it’s an unusual life, filled with dreams,
a door waiting to be opened.
–Ava Cohen
Fortunately, Unfortunately
They’re having an
earthquake on a tall city.
Unfortunately, the dragon’s
blood got drunk by a silkworm.
Fortunately, a guy named Alux
Leu came to eat 52 silkworms.
–David Huynh
The journey of life is birth, death
and everything in between.
Smell the wet leaves coming home
from driving in the night, clouds
moving overhead, the road ahead.
I can only travel with the love and family,
in the winter rain.
Comets travel over cities,
flying over countries.
Cities, countries, birth,
growing up to this point.
–Byron Belkola
Candy Planet
Candy planet is a world of wonder
as an orange gumball shines,
when the pink, fluffy clouds float
above the milky chocolate waves.
When the red starburst trees blow
as the night sky comes into a dark
blue sugar. The m&m stars shine
bright colors as they combine together.
Every sweet day you would see the
candy world as your days start over,
as you see the gumball, and the clouds.
When the powder of sweets comes into
your face. As you know that this day
will go on and on.
–Megan Ho
Journey through Time
I cannot describe my journey
through time. It was tough.
I made friends with monkeys
and took one banana.
They threw banana pie at me.
I rode a dinosaur, it flicked me off
and tried to eat me.
I went into a black hole and
I started to stretch.
I was in a big empty space.
I died and went back to earth,
but on the date 9/11/01 I died again.
–Andrew Karamjani
Emotions
Illness is when
someone drools
and is hurt.
Awkwardness is when
someone is feeling weird
and uncomfortable.
Fear is when someone
is scared and freaked out.
Excitement is when
I am so happy, like I’m hyper.
–Alexander Lau
I was born in
a Magic card as a
cheeseburger monster
with 500,000,000,000 tons
of ketchup.
–James Chen
The Power of the Heart
Love, Peace, Hate
Your heart is important,
without it, you will die.
Your heart controls your
emotions.
Love, Peace, Hate
When you are sad, you feel
pain, you might even want to
end your life.
When you are in Love, you feel
happy, willing to do anything
for your loved one.
Peace, no hate, calmness.
Love, Peace, Hate
–Kimberly Thai

cl audia dudley has been making poetry and music—and absorbing the stories
she tells RDASC students—since childhood. This semester she developed a new story
cycle, the revered Tibetan folktale of Milarepa, and is currently telling the cycle of the
Monkey King from China to her Lafayette students. She has written and performed
song cycles using student poetry, has published a volume of poetry, The Fragrant Fire,
a chapbook, In the Scale of Worlds, and in 2010 completed a 16-year work, Waters of
the Afternoon: A Song in Three Voices (poetry volume and CD). She loves her work
with poetry and storytelling and is still amazed that such a career exists.
michele menard
is a working interdisciplinary artist with education and experience
in theater, mask-making and puppetry. She is thrilled to be teaching with RDASC
and loves that her students learn about teamwork, critical thinking, imagination and
social skills in her class. She is proud of all the hard work the students have done and
all the amazing creativity! Michele looks forward to her continued involvement in the
Richmond District and is currently working on a gallery show installation of her newest
mixed media paintings and sculptures which will be displayed this upcoming fall.

The mission of Richmond District After School Collaborative (RDASC; pronounced
RAZ-DAK) is to improve the quality of life in our community by providing youth and
their families with affordable after school environments that are safe, fun, art enriching,
academically enhancing and culturally relevant.
R DA SC H i s t o ry
A program of the Richmond District Neighborhood Center, RDASC was founded in
1994 and has been serving Richmond District families for the past seventeen years.
RDASC fosters youth development and supports working families by providing
affordable, quality after school care to students.
The program was begun in response to strong community and school demand
for more childcare programs in the Richmond District with a focus on the arts. As
its name implies, RDASC brings together the resources and strengths of diverse
organizations in the community. This collaboration has enabled us to provide a rich
mix of services for youth that includes homework help and tutoring; diverse, multidisciplinary art experiences, recreational activities and counseling support.
The RDASC Anthology is a collection of poems, artwork and pictures produced
by youth during after school art classes taught by working professional artists over the
course of the school year. As a result of quality programming, we hope to teach youth
creative forms of expression, foster success in school and strengthen the link between
youth, family, school and community.
The program serves over 300 youth at Alamo, Argonne, George Peabody and
Lafayette elementary schools. For more information, please visit us on the web at
www.rdnc.org, or call (415) 751-6600.
