VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO HELP SAVE DESERT WILDLIFE by Jeff Novak DVM (retired)
Mama quail was desperate. Months without rainfall and little food had left the desert a
most inhospitable environment. She had just spent 23 days, under a bush, incubating
her 10 eggs, just to have them hatch out in these horrible circumstances. She was lucky
to even hatch out the little ones, but there they were looking like little cotton balls blowing
around in the wind behind her. As she approached the spring that she and her kind had
relied on forever, a sense of foreboding overcame her. The smell of death was in the air.
Dead birds were around the spring and and not a drop of surface water was present.
She watched her brood pecking at the dried mud of the spring in desperation. What would she do? She remembered another water source about a mile away but would water be there? Could her chicks make it that far?
She had to try. Her brood scurried from bush to bush to keep from burning there little feet on the hot desert
sand, following their mama with total trust. Would water be there? She approached the waterer with caution.
She saw other quail playing in the area. Her babies hid as she approached the mouth of the wildlife waterer,
filled to the brim with fresh clear water. She called her brood in and they happily drank their fill, and after drinking, played excitedly on the cement pad of the waterer. She and her brood had survived another day. This
wildlife waterer meant the difference between life and death for this quail family as well as many other water
starved animals.
Is this story a little too anthropomorphic for you? Several years ago, I got to see first hand, this scenario play out
with a not so happy ending. I was checking out a water source that a few weeks earlier had a mixed flock of
quail and chukar numbering a couple hundred. However, when I approached this water source it was dead quiet
which alarmed me because just a couple weeks earlier it was teaming with birds. I checked the water source
and it was dry which also seemed odd because just two weeks earlier it was full. What happened??? I let my
dogs out of the truck and they started immediately acting like birds were in the area. Both dogs went on point in
different locations. I walked over to see what they were pointing and to my surprise six birds (chukar) were in a
creosote bush in front of one dog and three more in front of the other dog. They did not move as I walked up and
though they looked alive, because they were huddled up together, they were dead, and only very recently dead.
As I let my dogs roam they found literally hundreds of dead birds in the desert near this water source; many,
many more than I had seen alive two weeks prior. After examining the birds I could tell they had all succumbed
to dehydration; but why were there so many dead birds at this one water source? I believe that waterers located
in the nearby wilderness had dried up and birds came welling out of the wilderness in overwhelming numbers to
this last water source and drank it dry in a very short time. These birds have an obligatory need to water at least
once a day so with no more water they died very rapidly. This event haunts me to this day. The incident was reported and steps were taken to correct the situation but the lack of water at this one guzzler had a devastating effect on the bird population in the area. Water is life in the desert. Without it, for many desert animals, there is
only death.
Call it global warming or climate change, there is no doubt there has been a gradual change over the last few
decades, in our desert, with decreasing rain and increasing temperatures. Whatever the cause or future outcome
of these drought conditions is, one thing is for certain; our desert wildlife are struggling to survive, and many are
not making it. Our desert has the largest biodiversity of any land habitat. Bobcats, coyotes, kit fox, badgers, rabbits, ring-tailed cats, ground squirrels, bats, reptiles, raptors, game birds like quail, chukar and dove, migratory
birds and even insects like bees and butterflies are all here and they all need water or benefit from it being provided. This in turn helps keep their numbers up to make it through and survive a severe drought.
One of the things we can do to help our local wildlife is to give them a little cushion against the horribly severe
conditions that presently exist in our desert, by providing water to get them through the rough patches. Quail
Forever (formerly Quail Unlimited) has always been a staunch supporter of our local wildlife for many years.
Over 125 waterers, have been placed strategically throughout our desert. These waterers originally put in by the
Department of Fish and Game and numerous volunteers in the 1940's and 1950"s, have helped out wildlife by
giving them a source of water. These waterers known as guzzlers, consist of a 40 by 40 foot paved pad at a
slight downhill tilt. When it rains, water collects on the pad and flows down into a 600-800 gallon fiberglass tank
that serves as a water reservoir for wildlife. The occasional rain shower or spotty thunderstorms fill these guzzlers and help wildlife to get through these dry spells. The problem is the size of the pad was calculated for rainfall patterns in the 40's and 50's. Because the rainfall has declined dramatically since then, these guzzlers often
go dry and have to be filled by a small group of volunteers. Given that these waterers are over a half century old,
many need repair to continue to hold water. Quail Forever is putting out a call for volunteers to help haul water
out to our wildlife. We also could use some help repairing a few of the wildlife waterers.
Quail Forever, a national organization, members are a diversified group of hunters, non-hunters, farmers, ranchers, landowners, conservation enthusiasts and wildlife officials. At the heart of Quail Forever is the unique grassroots system of fundraising and project development that allows members to see the direct result of their
contributions. Quail Forever empowers local chapters with the responsibility to determine how 100 percent of
their locally raised conservation funds will be spent - the only national conservation organization that operates
through this truly grassroots structure. As a result, chapter volunteers are able to see the fruits of their efforts locally, while belonging to a larger national organization with a voice on federal and state conservation policy. The
parent Quail Forever organization, spends 91.23% of monies it raises on habitat projects, public awareness and
education; 6,29% on fund-raising and 2.48% on administration. Their main website is at www.quailforever.org

tanks for hauling water, and materials to repair and provide shade at the guzzlers. New members are needed to
continue providing for local wildlife. The feeling we all get from giving back to the desert and helping wildlife as
well as the comradery between all these like-minded, goal oriented individuals is a wonderful thing. We leave

• CLOTA holds auditions for Spring Comedy by Oscar Wilde- Next spring, the Community Light Opera and
Theater Association will present "The Importance of Being Earnest" the witty and buoyant comedy of manners
by Oscar Wilde. Director Becki Cornett will soon be holding auditions for the classic farce which features
men-about-town, John Worthing and Algernon Moncrieff as they pursue fair ladies Gwendolen Fairfax and
Cecily Cardew. Matters are complicated by the imaginary characters invented by both men to cover their onthe-sly activities. The comedy has parts for several men and women with good comedic timing. The character
ages range from young adult to mid-fifties. Interested actors are encouraged to come to auditions on Friday,
January 10th at 6:30 p.m., or Saturday, January 11th at 1 p.m. at Center Stage, 1425 N. Inyo. Performance dates
