During his distinguished 37year career, Angeloni touched the lives of so many district families. He also worked tirelessly as an archivist and amateur photographer and historian for Deer Lakes to make sure that the district and communities that comprise it retained their history. School board member Clara Salvi, herself a longtime member of the Deer Lakes community, proposed the dedication ceremony. To honor Angeloni’s brilliant career and to thank him for his years of service to the district, Deer Lakes will hold a brief ceremony starting at 7 p.m. during its Feb. 16 voting meeting, during which members of the school district and community will have the opportunity to express their gratitude to Angeloni in person for the commitment and dedication he has consistently shown his community. School Board president Lisa Merlo will then present him with a plaque that will forever hang in the high school guidance office. Their collections in past years have benefited church projects (roof, stain glass window repair, painting of church interior, wall renovation, paving of parking lots), Image No Malaria, Hearing Impaired Fund, Love fund and many other things. This year, 2015, Janes UMC asked Ronald Plesh, Ambassador Syria Shriners, to give a short informative talk on December 6 explaining what the Shriners do. As Mr. Plesh is a transport driver, that is what his talk revolved around. Janes parishioners were impressed with what they learned and decided to support the Transportation Fund with their collection this Christmas season. While employed at these two shops, Harold attended many training classes in King of Prussia and Philadelphia, PA. Harold Jr. and his wife Linda joined the family business in 1972 with Linda, working with her husband as the secretary/bookkeeper and office manager. Harold eventually took over running the business upon his father’s retirement in 1996. Harold and Linda continued operating the business until this past December when they decided to close the business and retire. ANCA ACTIVITIES FOR FEBRUARY February 4 — SOCIAL EVENT at 12:00 noon. At work preparing bags for foster children are from left to right in the back row: Mia Mercer, Erika Johanson, Victoria Hall, Ava LaGamba, Jadyn Kuhn, Paige Atkins and Alaina LaGamba. Front row: Payton Celli, Kaitlyn Losh, Christiana Wills, Gianna Fiore and Natalina Tristani. Girl Scout Junior Troop 58403 is a group of thirteen 4th grade girls within the Deer Lakes Community. The girls worked on their Take Action Project and partnered with Foster Love Project to make it a success. The Foster Love Project is an initiative to get a placement bag immediately into the hands of kids who come into foster care. Most of these children leave their homes without any belongings and are usually taken to families who only have a few hours (or less) notice of their arrival. So it is a chaotic time for everyone. The troop, along with leaders Theresa Celli and Amy Hall, and parents put together placement bags for the children. A placement bag contains a new pair of pajamas, a throw blanket, a stuffed animal, a book, soap and a toothbrush. Infant bags also had wipes and diapers. The bags contain just a few pieces of comfort and necessities to bring some love to a child who has had a very confusing day. The Take Action key and its corresponding outcomes get girls motivated and excited about making an impact in their community that can be felt in the long term. It encourages girls to think bigger and to address problems in such a way that they do not reoccur. And, perhaps most important, a girl’s Take Action project changes the world in a meaningful way. We know we have just touched on the need for these bags after identifying over 10 foster agencies in the Pittsburgh area that could benefit from receiving these bags. For that reason we are continuing with this project. To continue, we are in need of more bags with summer-type clothing, specifically summer pajamas. We are also collecting restaurant gift cards, as well as Target gifts cards, to be given to foster families during their week of transition. Talisa Harshman from the Foster Love Project attended the scout meeting to collect the bags and meet with the girls to discuss the importance of their project. Pharmacist William (Bill) Palmer is mixing the medicine components that would fill the prescription that would have been prescribed by the doctor. Today, that procedure would be done by a compounding pharmacist. Pharmacy compounding is the art and science of preparing personalized medications for patients. Compounded medications are made based on a practitioner’s prescription in which individual ingredients are mixed together in the exact strength and dosage form required by the patient. This photo was taken in the back room of the drugstore where medicines were stored and “prepared” back in the early 1960’s. Before the drugstore portion was added (after Bill Palmer graduated from Pitt pharmacy school in 1952), his mother, Rosemary Montgomery, ran it as a General Store. Palmer’s Drug Store was also known for its large soda fountain area and large selection of magazines. Bill bought the store from his mother for $500 dollars!! It has been Palmers Drug Store since 1939, started by Bill’s father, Winston A. Palmer (Jan.1900 - Nov.1963). Prior to that the building housed Miller’s General Store and a bowling alley. Palmer sold the business to Nick Hromika and continued working there part-time until 2002!! Dear Friends: With the holiday season now behind us, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their outpouring of generosity regarding the children’s toy program. Once again the program flourished which in turn made the Christmas season very happy for forty families in our community. It never ceases to amaze me what wonderful residents and business owners we are fortunate to have who willingly donate toys, monetary donations or their time to make Christmas very special for others. On that note please accept my deepest gratitude for all that you’ve done for the program in the past and hopefully will continue to do in the future. I wish each of you a very merry season and a new year filled with 365 happy, healthy and prosperous days. Sincerely, Jonathan D. Eagle Scout Frank Wilbert V was honored in December at the First Presbyterian Church of Bakerstown, on Route 8, for the completion of an Eagle Scout Project for the church. Frank’s Eagle Scout project was building four all weather benches and putting them through out the church property, located on Heckert Road in Bakerstown just north of Tom Henry Chevy and across street from Bakerstown Feed Store. Frank would like to thank members of his Troop 169, from Transfiguration Church, Russellton, for assisting him with his project. He would also like to acknowledge the leaders and scouts of Troop 653 who met at the church for all of their help and support. More than a dozen scouts and parents installed the benches in a oneday time frame. Frank collected donations to cover the costs of the project and received discounts as well as donations from HP Starr Lumber Company. Frank is a sophomore at Deer Lakes High School. He is also involved in the high school bands, including the marching band, jazz band and also the symphonic band. Frank is also a member of AKV honors band and a member of the forensic team for the school which does speech and debate competitions around the area. His scouting accomplishments include membership in the Order of the Arrow, earning his religious medal and completing his mile swim at camp Seth Mack. Frank has done various projects with scouting to help and support the local community. Frank’s hobbies include bike riding, working on electronics, swimming, and helping with the St. Victors bingo on Thursday nights. Frank is the son of Frank and Roseann Wilbert. He has two older sisters Lenore and Olivia and his grandmother Donna. Follow Us on facebook and on the web. Well, they’ve done it again! The Owl’s Club has provided another donation of $1200.00 plus over 500 pounds of food to the West Deer Food Bank. With the help of a fund-raiser that included raffles and 50/50 drawings the club was able to make this donation. Spokesperson Jack Crowell said that one of the winners of a 50/50 drawing with a cash prize actually donated the entire amount back to the Food Bank Fund Drive. Carol McCaskey of the West Deer Food Bank said, “The Owls Club has surpassed all expectations. The Club gave food and a $300 check to the West Deer Food Bank in December. I received a call from the Owls Club at the beginning of January. They had a check for the West Deer Food Bank for $1,200. What generous members. THANK YOU!!!
