MYSWITZERLAND.COM SUMMARIZES WHAT SWITZERLAND HAS TO OFFER Nestled within the breathtaking natural landscape is a spectacular cultural landscape. Baroque monasteries, Gothic abbeys, castles and many other historical structures found at every turn are reminders of Switzerland’s past. The remains of a Roman amphitheater, the painted houses, and the chapels that you’ll find along roads of antiquity stand as silent witnesses to the many people and cultures who have left their mark throughout the course of time. Roads used by ancient Romans as trade routes, taken by pilgrims on religious journeys, and traveled by artists bringing Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque influences into Switzerland are now yours to travel as you discover the beauty the history and the thousands of joys that Switzerland has to offer. Switzerland benefits from an ideal central location in Europe. The Swiss terrain dips from the world’s highest alpine peaks to verdant valleys and lakes. The northern borders are shared with Germany; France lies to the west; Italy is immediately to the south; and Liechtenstein and Austria form the eastern frontiers. The central part of the Alps provides the dramatic scenery for most of the country The Rhône Valley splits the canton of Valais, which has a temperate climate that permits vineyards to flourish on its slopes. The Upper Rhine River runs through the eastern section, forming the border with Germany. In the west of the country is the Jura region, the most heavily forested area of Switzerland. More than half of the total land area is used for agriculture, forests cover one-quarter of the space, and the remaining quarter is made up of glaciers, rocks and lakes. However, only three of these languages maintain equal status as official languages within the Federal Administration of the Swiss Confederation: German, French, and Italian. Native speakers number about 64% for German (mostly Swiss German dialects, though Swiss Standard German is used in writing and in a few official contexts in speaking), 20% for French (mostly Swiss French, but including some Arpitan dialects), 6.5% for Italian (mostly Swiss Italian, but including Lombard dialects), less than 0.5% for Romansh and 9% is made up of other languages. The German region (Deutschschweiz) is in the north and center, the French part (Romandie) in the west and the Italian area (Svizzera italiana) in the south. There remains a small Romansh-speaking native population in Graubünden in the east. The cantons of Fribourg, Bern and Valais are officially bilingual; Graubünden is officially trilingual. Both Gion campuses are located in the French speaking part of Switzerland. TIME ZONE Switzerland operates on Central European Time (CET), which is GMT+1. WEATHER Located in the heart of the Alps, Switzerland benefits from a temperate continental climate. Winters are not too cold in spite of some significant snowfalls and the temperature rarely goes below - 5°C. Summer is warm but not too hot, and generally remains below 30°C. CURRENCY The monetary unit of Switzerland is the Swiss Franc (CHF), which is divided into 100 cents. While you are in Switzerland, currency can be easily converted at airports, railway stations, local banks and hotels. The rate of exchange will be best at airports, railway stations and banks; it is lowest at hotels. A fee is often added for the exchange of service – even at banks. POPULATION 7.9 million inhabitants. Glion Institute of Higher Education Glion_AcceptancePack_Swiss_ENG_v3.indd 11 | 11 10.02.14 16:05 GOVERNMENT Switzerland, one of the world’s oldest democracies, is a confederation of 26 states, which are known as cantons. Each canton has its own government and capital city. Bern is the seat of the federal government with the ‘Bundeshaus’ (House of the Confederation) serving as the capital. The presidency is an unheralded position, which rotates annually. RELIGION Freedom of worship is practiced in Switzerland. Of the population, 35% adhere to various branches of the Protestant faiths. Roman Catholics make up 42% of the population, with the remaining belonging to other faiths. INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS Switzerland is home to an impressive number of world headquarters of multi-national companies and international organizations such as the United Nations, the Red Cross, the World Trade Organization, the International Olympic Committee, and numerous sports federations and Non Government Organizations. Switzerland also enjoys a great reputation as a venue for international conferences. Highly prestigious events such as the World Economic Forum, which takes place every year in Davos, bear testimony to this fact. LAKE GENEVA (LAC LÉMAN) The Swiss Romande region is a miniature version of Switzerland. Here you’ll find peaceful towns and cities bordered by Lake Geneva (Nyon, Morges, Lausanne, Montreux) and Lake Neuchâtel (Neuchâtel, Yverdon-les-Bains), the rolling wooded hills of the Jura (St-Cergue, Vallée de Joux, Sainte-Croix), the delightful green landscapes of the northern part of the canton (Echallens, Romainmôtier, Payerne, Avenches) and the snowy summits of the Alps with their majestic glaciers (Leysin, Les Mosses, Les Diablerets, Villars-Gryon, Château-d’Oex). At the cross roads of Europe’s major road and rail links, with Geneva International Airport close by, the area is ideal for both business and pleasure. With its exceptional environment, historic heritage and outstanding modern tourist infrastructure, the Lake Geneva Region offers a vast choice of sporting, cultural and leisure activities. 12 | Glion Institute of Higher Education Glion_AcceptancePack_Swiss_ENG_v3.indd 12 10.02.14 16:05 GERMANY BASEL ZURICH FRANCE AUSTRIA BERN FRIBOURG SWITZERLAND BULLE MONTREUX / GLION GENEVA ITALY MONTREUX BULLE Montreux, “The Pearl of the Swiss Riviera” is situated at the eastern Bulle is located in the heart of Gruyère nestled in the backdrop of end of Lake Geneva and enjoys a very mild climate. GIHE aims to provide its students the opportunity to achieve a combination of professional development and personal growth. This philosophy has been manifested through the long lasting “Glion Spirit” carried and enhanced by our students. GIHE is particularly attentive to the following criteria: motivation for the profession, adaptability, perseverance, initiative, general appearance, cleanliness, presentation, team spirit, courtesy and self-control - all this enhanced by enthusiasm! To lead a decent and proper community life but more particularly to develop qualities that are essential to hospitality, sport and event industries, GIHE places a strong emphasis on students’ professional etiquette (attitude and behavior) during their studies. ETHICAL PHILOSOPHY While the institution has a policy of accepting cultural diversity and encourages students to live in accordance with their beliefs and cultural habits, we ask students to respect the cultural diversity of others so that their views and personal presentation do not offend others. Students may have to adapt themselves to the demands of a service industry, where their views and personal attitude may be inappropriate if not moderated. GIHE seeks to help students understand these needs and progressively improve their capability to deal with diversity. Our team members are devoted to assisting students in learning how to recognize, understand, accept, appreciate and adapt to the cultural diversity of our student community. Glion Institute of Higher Education Glion_AcceptancePack_Swiss_ENG_v3.indd 17 | 17 10.02.14 16:05 HEALTH, SPORTS AND RECREATION ILLNESS AND ACCIDENTS Student can always seek assistance during working hours via our Student Affairs team, or out of hours via the security team. If a student suffers from a medical condition that requires treatment or special consideration, then medical documentation must be sent with the medical certificate during the application process. CAMPUS WELL-BEING In the interest of student health, GIHE has a firm stance on smoking, substance abuse and alcohol. Campuses are non-smoking with designated areas set aside for smokers. Please take note that smoking in bedrooms is strictly forbidden. A strict no-drugs and alcohol in moderation policy aim to keep students in good health and focused on their studies. ACADEMIC INFORMATION FOR PARENTS / SPONSORS Whilst your son or daughter is studying at GIHE, the Academic Department is here to support them in their studies. We encourage our students to develop and mature to become hospitality and event, sport and entertainment professionals of the future. During the early semesters of their study, we provide a rigorous and structured environment including monitoring their absences and providing subject tutoring and support workshops. As students mature in the later years of their study, they develop their study skills and habits to fulfill the needs of their program. Your support in developing their independence and maturity through discussing their progress directly with them is supportive to this process.
