The jewels of our heritage - Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc
Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc and its gardens 5 1 HOTEL DU CAP Built in 1870 by the founder of the ‘Figaro’ newspaper, Auguste de Villemessant, and originally called ‘Villa Soleil’, was meant to host writers seeking inspiration. It is in 1887 with the arrival of Antoine Sella, a hotelier from the Piedmont region in Italy, that the elegant Napoleon III style building, is named ‘Grand Hotel du Cap’. In January 1889, the ‘Grand Hotel du Cap’ opens its doors. The 1950’s and 1960’s mark the arrival of the world’s elite in a motley procession , from the Kennedy family to the Greek shipowner Stavros Niarkos, the aeroplane maker Marcel Dassault, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Marlene Dietrich, Ernest Hemingway or Nobel Prize winner George Bernard Shaw, all of them here looking for a living dream : luxury in all simplicity. 7 The jewels of our heritage 2 THE GREAT ALLEY This mythical alley was created in 1863 and has never been modified since. 3 THE EDEN-ROC PAVILLON Erected in 1914, the Eden-Roc pavilion was originally the Hotel du Cap tea-room, patronised by sovereigns, maharajahs, businessmen and artists living in the ‘Cap d’ Antibes’. It is in this period that the emblematic sea water swimming pool was carved out, in basalt rock. The Eden-Roc pavilion was extended in 1987 with the creation of 31 Junior Suites as well as the Eden-Roc Suite. 6 1 12 4 SWIMMING-POOL The sea-water swimming-pool was carved out in the rock in 1914. It was renovated in 1990 to create an infinity pool. Situated 4 metres above the sea, it offers a 1m50 depth and a 20m length. 5 TWO FOUNTAINS Created in 1981, the ‘Two Fountains’ building was renovated in 2012 and currently offers 16 double rooms. 9 13 6 DOG CIMETERY The idea of a dog cemetery came up on the sad occasion when Lady Onslow’s little dog died during their stay here in 1900. Knowing how closely attached Lady Onslow was to her dog, the owner of the hotel at that period, after having had a little coffin built, and always eager to please his clients, suggested that the little animal be buried next to the rose garden, a favorite spot where Lady Onslow and her guests often had tea and passed the time doing their reading and sewing. Up to date, this whole area is affectionately called “Lady Onslow’s garden” by the old employees of the hotel. 2 Boulevard J.F.
