Coastscapes of Kintyre and the Isles
Jolomo is one of Scotland’s leading contemporary landscape artists.
His success and incredible popularity stem from his somewhat unique and innovative positioning
within Scottish landscape painting. He has shunned realism and impressionism to create his own
expressionist landscape oeuvre – in this respect he is in a class of his own. Jolomo eschews the
literal interpretation of a landscape to create a more emotionally based conversation. He wants to
recreate the emotional impact that you feel when you witness a beautiful scene in a way that any
simple reproduction or representation could not achieve.
Jolomo was born in 1948. He invented the sobriquet ‘Jolomo’ in a Latin class, when he was only
14 – at that stage, he would have little concept of just how famous that name would become. He
went on to train at Glasgow School of Art from 1967 to 1971 under the tutelage of some of the
period greats like Dan Ferguson, Jimmy Robertson, Duncan Shanks and Sandy Goudie. In the
early seventies, a visit to Switzerland was to have a profound effect on him with the development
of his interest in a ‘high-key colour’ palette and this was followed by a trip to Paris and exposure
to Chagall and Soutine, when he started to build his compositions round the use of the colour
blue.
In 1997, following a very successful career in teaching, Jolomo severed all links to education and
turned to painting full time.
Jolomo is a deeply spiritual and committed Christian and this translates to his paintings – they are
full of optimism and are designed to lift and to please the viewer. Jolomo is also an incredible
charitable force, always ploughing a significant proportion of his income to various charities and
worthy causes. He and his wife Maureen are Patrons of the Princess Royal Trust for Carers and in
2011 John was awarded an OBE. In 2006 he used this awareness to launch the very generous
Jolomo Foundation awards to encourage new and emerging landscape painters to promote
interest in the landscape genre.
Significantly, in 2013 John was offered a remarkable tribute, a very successful Public
Retrospective - A Passion for Colour Jolomo the Retrospective, at the Clydebank Museum and Art
Gallery 2013, which attracted over 20,000 visitors.
There is no doubt that John has become one of the key artistic phenomenon’s of our generation –
we invite you to experience our second solo show with John and to get an insight into how he
sees the glory of the natural landscape.
