Message from the Principal
Kia ora and Greetings,
This newsletter arrives in homes just as
students are about to head into a two week
term break. During the next two weeks
some students and staff are involved in
sports, and cultural activities. Others will
be on exchanges or trips, and most will be
catching up on work and rest – ready for a
busy third term ahead.
Caring for our Students
As a parent or caregiver one of the hardest things to have to deal with is
unkind actions of other students towards your own child. Schools now
treat almost anything of this nature as being a form of bullying, and it is
to our society’s credit that such behaviours are becoming less and less
ignored or accepted.
Our College has a wide range of resources, approaches and people we
use to address disputes or bullying between students. The solutions
we put in place range from restorative to punitive, and will also always
involve the students’ families and on-going monitoring.
Sometimes very caring parents and caregivers try to address the
situation for themselves. Understandably, driving around to the other
student’s address to “sort it out” or using social media to “name and
shame” the other child might have an emotional appeal, but rarely works.
Such approaches can also have the added challenge of modelling less
appropriate behaviours to one’s own children, or sometimes showing
one’s own child how to be a better bully.
We readily acknowledge that many of the reasons why young people
“fall out” with one another are from outside of College. However,
because it interrupts learning, we will not ignore bullying or other
negative behaviours and we deal with them as soon as we are aware of
them. For all that, we will usually be the last to know about bullying via
Facebook and the like.
All we ask is, please let us know. Simply email, call or text one of your
child’s teachers; call into, phone or email our office; or write us a note.
By working together in this way our College can do a better job of
caring for our students.
Celebrations
We have just had another fabulous College Ball and, for the students,
Community After-Ball. Both were very successful. Our students and
those who assisted them in everything, from the planning to attending
on the night, all helped create a very successful and memorable night.
Last week’s Lip Sync was an entertaining showcase of talent and good
humour. Well done to all of those involved and particular note must be
made of the staff team who won back the trophy in the annual Student
Executive vs Staff challenge!
Congratulations
Our Academic Blues Assembly was also held last week. We have a very
fixed and rigorous criteria for being awarded a Performance Award or
an Academic Blue. It was really pleasing to see more students qualify
than in previous years – some 165 students in all!

Staff – Farewell
At the end of term we farewell four staff members, with regret and
appreciation for all that they have contributed to the College.
Nicola Moerdyk
Nicola has been with us at College since the beginning of 2014, as Teacher
of Physics and Science, and latterly teacher-in-charge of Physics. Nicola is
transferring to Rangiora High School, which will also significantly reduce her
daily commuting time. We have appreciated Nicola’s input at College, to
both students and staff, and wish her well in her new position.
Muriel Morgan
Muriel has been a committed and caring Learning Support Assistant in
the Student Learning Support Unit since March of last year but is making
a change to The Tutoring Centre where she will further utilise her teaching
skills. We thank Muriel for her contributions to the students, and work with
staff.
Aimee Samuels
Aimee commenced at College in February 2013, as Science Technician and
since then has effectively contributed to the efficiencies of the Science
Faculty with her expertise in this role.
Additionally Aimee undertook, since 2014, the position of Reader-Writer
Co-ordinator.
Her quiet efficiencies will be missed from both positions, but she is wished
well in the family’s transfer to Dunedin.
Dan Shaw
Teacher of Mathematics and Year 11 Dean, Dan Shaw has been with us
since July 2013 and is now moving to a new position at St Bernard’s College,
Lower Hutt.
Dan has been well-regarded by his teaching and Faculty peers and will
be missed for both his classroom and pastoral contributions to students,
families and staff.

These Open Days provide an opportunity for prospective students and
their families to explore the Campus and Halls of Residence, find out about
degrees and courses, attend lectures and talk with lecturers.
Information on how to apply to the university, their scholarships and
accommodation is also available.

has organised College Hoodies
for sale.
College Pride was the focus and
motivation for organising the
sale of Hoodies, which were
designed by Daniel Harper-Grey.
Daniel’s design, chosen from four
final designs, links the Hoodies
with the College’s 50th Jubilee.
The teams at this event held at the Levels Plains Raceway, Timaru on 18 June,
competed in very testing rain, wind and sleet conditions. Our riders showed
grit and character continuing to race as some riders pulled out when the
weather turned, as the racing began.
However, very pleasing results were gained, especially by Isabella Roulston,
Bailey O’Donnell and Matt Clough who gained podium finishes, prior to the
event being called off, which ruled out competing in the Team Time Trail
which the Junior Boys’ Team of Bailey O’Donnell, Matt Clough and Abe
O’Donnell were looking forward to being very competitive in.
Representatives from ten secondary schools from North Otago, Mid
Canterbury and South Canterbury took part, with seven Junior Girls’ (Under
16) competitors; twenty four Junior Boys’ (Under16) competitors; and
nineteen Senior Boys’ (Under 18) competitors
College Team Members were Juniors: Bailey O’Donnell, Matt Clough, Abe O’Donnell, Luke Skinner
and Isabella Roulston.
Seniors: James Skinner and Ryan Jackson.
Don Kirdy and Myles O’Donnell were Coach and Manager
respectively.

Highland Dance Company of
New Zealand – Britney Moore

Year 10 student, Britney Moore, has recently been selected as a member
of the New Zealand Highland Dance Company.
The first step to this selection was a video audition early April, where
the applicants had to submit clips of different parts of movements.
Following this, Britney received a letter to say she was through to the
live audition round, which took place in Christchurch later in May.
From the twelve undertaking the live audition, five were selected.
Those trialling have to be
aged fourteen or above and, at
fourteen years of age, Britney is
the youngest in the company
although Britney did say there
is another fourteen year old in
the company.
The Dance Company is
comprised of approximately
twenty eight dancers, from the
youngest through to adults.
Those selected are appointed
for a two year period, and can
then re-audition for further
terms.
This year the Company
will be performing at the
Highland Dance Conference in
Wellington, during September,
over three to four days while,
in 2016, an overseas tour is on
the agenda.
Britney said she is ‘so excited’
by the opportunity.

Smokefree Rockquest – Regional Finals
Top Scholars
Top Scholar students are those who, at each year level, have achieved the greatest number
of Excellence Credits.
The assembly to present these
awards was held on Tuesday 23 June,
this year in the College Gym due to
weather constraints.
The awards are based on students’
previous year’s NCEA results when
the students were at Year 11 and Year
12 levels.

Jonathon Stevens – Level 1
As reported, in a previous newsletter, College Band Regulation successfully
contested the Heats of the Smokefree Rockquest Competition, in Timaru on
22 May.
On Friday 05 June the Band again travelled to Timaru to perform in the
Regional Finals where, although not placed this time, they were received
very enthusiastically, and applauded by all of the other bands at the afterfunction for their original song ‘My People’.
Music teacher Michael Petrus says that the band’s song-writing capabilities
have developed hugely since the beginning of the year, and they are playing
with confidence and skill.

Crusaders Junior Knights Under 18
Development Camp Selection
Three Ashburton College players have been selected to attend the
Crusaders Junior Knights Under 18
Development Camp, taking place at St
Andrews College, Christchurch from 05
– 09 July.
The 2015 camp marks the first time
an extended wider training group has
also been selected, with players from
this group attending select sessions
throughout the camp.
College Players Selected are Malakai Cakaunitabua, Cameron McLeod
and Alifeleti Prescott.They will join sixty plus players from other schools
in the Crusaders’ Region.
