Microlet ® FOR L ANCING DEVICE FOR FINGERTIP AND ALTERNATIVE SITE TESTING The M ICROLET® 2 lancing device from Bayer is a simple to use lancing device with a lancet ejection mechanism. The ergonomic design allows you to hold the device securely for capillary blood sampling. Use MICROLET ® lancets from Bayer with the MICROLET ®2 lancing device for best results. Use the GREY adjustable endcap for fingertip testing only. Use the CLEAR endcap for alternative site testing (AST) on the palm or forearm. Please consult your meter system user guide before performing alternative site testing as it provides important information about the best testing sites for your system. Alternative site testing (AST) is recommended only when it is more than 2 hours after a meal, diabetes medication, or exercise. Blue Re-setting Handle cets! Silicone Coated Lan h t o o m S with Blue Release Button Fingertip, Palm and Forearm Testing IMPORTANT: Do not use AST under the following conditions: • If you think your blood sugar is low (hypoglycaemia). • When blood sugar is changing rapidly (after a meal, insulin dose, or exercise). • If you are unable to feel symptoms of low blood sugar (hypoglycaemic unawareness). • If you get alternative site blood sugar results that do not agree with how you feel. • During illness or during times of stress. • If you will be driving a car or operating machinery. • To calibrate a device or verify a low blood sugar level. To assure proper use of alternative site testing please consult your health care professional. Do not share it with anyone including other family members. Do not use on multiple patients. • The MICROLET 2 lancing device should not be used for assisted blood draws by health care professionals or at health care provision sites. • Do not reuse lancets. Use a new MICROLET lancet each time you test because it is no longer sterile after each use. • Always wash your hands well with soap and water before and after handling the lancing device. • Always dispose of the used lancet as medical waste or as advised by your health care professional. All products that come in contact with human blood should be handled as if capable of transmitting infectious diseases. PREPARING YOUR M ICROLET 2 LANCING DEVICE 1. Prepare the testing site. Wash your hands and puncture site with soap and warm water. Rinse and dry thoroughly. 2. Remove the endcap. In one hand, hold the MICROLET 2 lancing device with your thumb on the grip indent as shown in drawing 2. In your other hand, hold the endcap dial and gently snap off the endcap from top to bottom. 3. Hold a MICROLET lancet and rotate the protective cap 1/4 turn but do not remove it. Always use MICROLET lancets for best operation. 3. 4. Firmly push the lancet straight into the lancet holder. After you hear or feel the “click,” continue pushing until the lancet comes to a complete stop. Twist off the protective cap and save for disposal of used lancet. NOTE: If you need to re-set the lancing device, grip, pull or push until device clicks as shown, and release. 2. 1. CLICK 4. Attach the GREY 1. adjustable endcap to the M ICROLET 2 lancing device. Do not use the CLEAR endcap on your fingertips. 2. Select any of the five puncture depth 2. settings by rotating the dial on the endcap to a smaller drop for a shallower Shallow puncture or larger Puncture drop for a deeper puncture. Adjusting the amount of pressure applied to the puncture site will also affect puncture depth. 3. Place the MICROLET 2 device firmly against the puncture site and press the blue release button. The sides of the fingertips may be more comfortable. 4. To help form the blood drop, wait a few seconds, then stroke your hand and finger toward the puncture site. Do not squeeze around the puncture site. 5. Test immediately after the blood drop has formed. 6. Wipe the puncture site with a clean, dry tissue and maintain pressure on the site until the bleeding stops. 1. Attach the CLEAR AST endcap to the M ICROLET 2 lancing device. 2. Deep Puncture 3. 3. 4. ALTERNATIVE SITE TESTING (AST) Use the CLEAR 1. AST endcap! If Palm is Selected — 2. Select a puncture site from a fleshy area on the palm. Avoid veins, hair, moles, bones and tendons. 3. Press the CLEAR endcap firmly against the puncture site and then press the blue release button. Maintain steady pressure until the blood drop under the endcap reaches the appropriate size for your meter. See your meter user guide. 4. CAUTION: Do not use the CLEAR endcap on your fingertips. If Forearm is Selected — 2. Select a puncture 2. site from a fleshy area on the forearm. Rub forearm vigorously until it feels warm. Avoid veins, hair, moles, bones and tendons. 3. Press the CLEAR endcap against the puncture site and then press the blue release button. Keep the device in constant contact with the skin and apply and release pressure by slowly pumping up and down 2–3 times without lifting the device away from skin. Maintain steady pressure until the blood drop under the endcap reaches the appropriate size for your meter. See your meter user guide. 3. 4. 4. Lift the device straight up and away from skin without smearing the blood drop. 5. Test immediately after the blood drop has formed. Do not test the blood sample if you get: • Smeared blood • Runny blood • Clotted blood • Clear fluid mixed with the blood 6. Wipe the puncture site with a clean, dry tissue and maintain pressure on the site until the bleeding stops. EJECTING AND DISPOSING OF THE USED LANCET Always dispose of the used lancet as medical waste to prevent injury or contamination to others. Use a new MICROLET lancet each time you test. Do not reuse. 1. Carefully remove the endcap by holding the endcap dial and snapping the endcap off. 2. Place the protective cap that you saved when you loaded the lancet on a flat surface with the Bayer logo face down. With the used lancet still in the MICROLET 2 lancing device, push the lancet into the center of the cap. 3. Point the device toward a container for sharp objects (an empty plastic bottle with a lid will work). Label the container properly and keep out of the reach of children. While pressing the blue release button , firmly pull the blue re-setting handle past resistance and the lancet will fall into the container. 4. Replace the endcap. 2. 3. CLEANING AND DISINFECTION Your M ICROLET 2 lancing device should be cleaned and disinfected once a week. Use only germicidal wipes containing 0.55% sodium hypochlorite (bleach), which has been proven to be safe to use with the MICROLET 2 lancing device. Cleaning is the removal of visible dirt and debris, but does not reduce the risk for transmission of infectious diseases. Your MICROLET 2 lancing device should be cleaned of dirt and debris once a week. Disinfecting (if performed properly) reduces the risk of transmitting infectious diseases. Your lancing device should be disinfected once a week. NOTE: If your lancing device is being operated by a second person who is providing testing assistance to you, the lancing device should be disinfected prior to use by the second person. Clean the M ICROLET 2 lancing device with germicidal wipes until all soil is removed. 2. Dry as necessary with a clean paper towel. DISINFECTING YOUR MICROLET 2 LANCING DEVICE Supplies Needed for Disinfecting: • Germicidal wipes containing 0.55% sodium hypochlorite (bleach) • Paper towels • Timing device 1. Before disinfecting, clean the lancing device as described in CLEANING YOUR LANCING DEVICE. 2. Remove the endcap and lancet if present. FOR PROPER DISINFECTION, YOU MUST KEEP ALL ENDCAP SURFACES WET FOR 60 SECONDS. 3. Using a new germicidal wipe, carefully wipe all external and internal surfaces of the endcap until wet. 5. Dry all lancing device surfaces and endcap with a clean paper towel if needed. SIGNS OF DETERIORATION Your M ICROLET ® 2 lancing device has been tested for 260 cycles of the cleaning and disinfection procedure (one cycle per week for 5 years). The MICROLET 2 lancing device has been demonstrated to withstand 5 years of cleaning and disinfection without damage. However, if your device malfunctions for any cause, contact Bayer Customer Service to troubleshoot the issue and provide a solution.
