Todd Thompson
Galesburg City Manager
Todd Thompson was hired as City Manager in January of this
year. He has 16 years experience in public administration. Before
coming to Galesburg, he was the City Manager of Mexico, Missouri. Todd grew up in Illinois and came to Galesburg because of
the small hometown feel and the sense of community he felt in
Galesburg. He will be speaking on City Government. Come hear
what is new and/or changing in Galesburg!
10-Year Consecutive Members
Congratulations to the following members who have achieved 10
consecutive years of membership in 2011. Thank you for your
support and commitment in promoting quality building in our
community. Their names will be added to the plaque outside the
WIBA Office.

President’s Corner...
It seems like every article I write starts
out with news relating to the economy and most
of it has not been good. High paying factory
jobs have gone the way of the Edsel. U.S. factories lost 3 million jobs from 2000 to 2004 and
another 2.2 million from 2007 to 2010. Manufacturing jobs were 20% of private-sector payrolls in 1990 whereas today they account for
about 10%. Large multinational corporations
have cut 2.9 million jobs in the past decade
while adding 2.4 million workers to their overseas operations. Obviously the times are
changing. We live in a global economy and we
need to change in order to continue growth and
success. The good news, I believe, is that we
have the will and the ability to change along
with the times because we always have in the
past. The bad news is that some people seem to
think the government can wave a magic wand
and simply create change and jobs. Real
change and growth has always come from the
private sector.
The article in the paper the other day
regarding the housing market was interesting.
It stated that each real estate sale realizes over
$28,000 in additional value over the sale price
due to retail purchases, transportation, finance,
insurance, and other professional services
needed. The total impact in Illinois alone in
2010 was almost $8 billion. As I’ve said in the
past, once housing gets back on track, the rest
of the economy will follow.
I hope your team is doing well whether is
be football or baseball, as long as your team is
the one I’m rooting for of course! This warm
weather has been like an extended summer
without the A/C costs because it cools down in
the evening. Enjoy it while it lasts.
See you at the October 19th meeting.
You will meet the new City Manager and have
a chance to win the $25 door prize. I’m told
that some needy member won last month so
there will be no rollover this month.
