The City on the Danube Sremska Kamenica Kovilj The history of contemporary Novi Sad is connected with the building and development of Petrovaradin Fortress, one of the most important preserved fortifications in Europe. This connection between the city core on the left bank of the Danube and the Fortress and the Baroque suburbium on the right bank witnesses a multi-confessional tradition of the city that firmly relies on European culture. The Danube is the main street of Novi Sad around which the cores of Petrovaradin, Sremska Kamenica and Bačka side of Novi Sad on the left bank of the river are grouped. The City has come down to the river not only with its oldest streets and representational buildings, but also with new city quarters, promenades, beaches, "čardas" (taverns), and weekend resorts. The visitors are usually surprised by unexpected and uniquely rich contents of an urban centre of Novi Sad characterised by Orthodox, Catholic, protestant churches and the synagogue, baroque, neo-renaissance, classicistic, and Bauhaus buildings, as well as those built in the modern style. Novi Sad is also a modern university city, the city of museums, galleries, and events such as EXIT Music Festival that has been awarded international rewards and that has acquired international recognisability. Novi Sad, the city on the Danube, the city of European history and Balkan hospitality is the experience you are missing. The Roman Catholic Church of Discovery of the Holly Cross (1811) and Serbian Orthodox Church of the Holly Mother’s Birth (1758) are located in the centre of Sremska Kamenica. The visitors can also see the Zmaj’s Museum dedicated to Jovan Jovanović Zmaj (1833-1904), Serbian poet, physician, and member of the Serbian Royal Academy. The contemporary appearance of Marcibany Karacsony Castle dates back to 1836. The royal family of Marcibany de Puho started the building works by the end of the 18th century. The castle was also the property of the noble family Karacsony. Kamenički Park was designed by the end of the 18th century. Initially, it was a part of the park around the castle that the family Marcibany de Puho started to build. The Park spreads across the surface of 28 ha. It is the largest park in the City of Novi Sad and it is protected as a nature resort. Kovilj is an old Bačka village located at the outskirts of Kovilj-Petrovaradin Marsh. The records mention it for the first time in the 13th century. The place is known after the Serbian Orthodox Monastery Kovilj with the church dedicated to St. Archangels Michael and Gabriel. According to the legend it was founded by St. Sava. The monastery got its current outlook by the middle of the 18th century. Serbian Orthodox Church of Christ’s Ascension (1829) and Serbian Orthodox Church of St. Thomas the Apostle (1845) are located in the centre of Kovilj. One can also see the birth house of Laza Kostić (1841-1910), a writer, poet, and translator there. The tourists are also offered the possibility to book their visit to Agricultural Estate of Sava Graorac at Vojvodjanskih brigada 57 (Phone: 2988 558; www.koviljskarakijada.co.rs). Begeč Begeč is one of the suburbs of Novi Sad. The remnants of the pier Castellum Onagrinum dating back to the end of the 3rd century were found in the vicinity of Begeč, at the archaeological site called Kuva. On the southern side of the complex there is the necropolis dating back to the late Middle Ages, the period of Great Migration of Peoples, while Sarmatian necropolis was found on the northern side. Nature Park Begečka jama spreads across the surface of 379 hectares. It is a nature resort under the protection of the state and habitat of more than 100 plant varieties, 150 bird species and hatchery for more than 27 fish species. Futog Futog is an old settlement. The records mention it for the first time in 1250. Today it is one of the suburbs of Novi Sad known after vegetable growing and production, in particular of cabbage. The Roman Catholic Church of the Jesus Heart, which was built in 1908 on the foundations of the temple dating back to 1776, and Serbian Orthodox Church of St. Cosmas and Damian (1776) can be seen in its centre. Futog Castle, which was built in 1777 by Count Hadik, is also one of representational buildings in Futog.
