Location: Novi Sad, Serbia
Seen from a vantage-point in the Fruška Gora hills, Novi Sad gently and easily
spreads across the Pannonian Plain, opening its doors wide to every guest.
This is a Pannonian city rich in tradition and culture, where everything
flourishes and everything is preserved, most of all the relaxed nature of the
people. Novi Sad, the capital of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina, has
a great many buildings reflecting a variety of architectural styles. Some of
the most important Serbian cultural and academic institutions were located
in Novi Sad and still are today. In addition, Novi Sad can boast of being a
multinational, multicultural and multi-faith city to an extent that few others
in Europe can. In this city, differences and diversity are considered
advantages.
Novi Sad is Serbia's second largest city, after Belgrade.
According to the data from November 2009, the city had an urban
population of 283,634, while its municipal population was 370,101.The city is
located on the border of the Bačka and Srem regions, on the banks of the
Danube River and Danube-Tisa-Danube Canal, while facing the northern
slopes of Fruška Gora Mountain.
Since it was founded in 1694, Novi Sad became the centre of Serbian culture
and earned its nickname Serbian Athens. Today, Novi Sad is a large industrial
www.eycv.org
and Financial Centre of the Serbian economy; and it is also one of the biggest
construction sites in the region.
The name Novi Sad means "New Plantation" (noun) in Serbian. It is a
translation of the Latin word "Neoplanta," which was given by Maria Teresia.
As a meeting place of cultures and people, Novi Sad came to have many
different names in various languages.
Petrovaradin Fortress is an 18th century fortress located on the right bank of
the Danube river in Novi Sad, in the province of Vojvodina, Serbia.
The cornerstone of the present-day southern part of the fortress was laid on
October 18, 1692, by Charles Eugène de Croÿ. Petrovaradin Fortress has
many underground tunnels as well (16 km of underground countermine
system).
