Kevin Fubar Props to robot designers for finally coming out with stuff that can make a difference, not that robotic factory arms and mechanized food processing and and and… Whatever man, this thing is cute. It’s designed on the principle that many organizations depend on charitable contributions for their operating budgets. Usually it takes legions of volunteers to collect these donations, but in our modern world such tasks can be done with robots just as well. Not to mention that people get annoyed with panhandlers. Enter DON-8r bot, designed by Tim Pryde. DON-8r is constructed from smooth plastic panels, it glides along the ground for a set length and then stops to ask passersby for donations. The coinage deposited into the slot on his back helps to power the bot, and he won’t roll on without the continued support from passersby. This little robotic panhandler is designed to be branded with any charity of choice. He says “ow” if he bumps into something and after receiving a donation, says “thank you!” On one trip out he made $25. Tim Pryde is a student of the University of Dundee in Scotland in his final year. He teamed up with the Dundee Science Centre and produced this cute little bot to raise awareness for the center and to collect DON-8tions. People don’t seem to mind handing donations to a cute little robot, so don’t be surprised if you see one in your future. iHobo app returns, adds social sharing and SMS donations to help support the homeless Matt Brian To better connect with the issues, the app also iHobo, the iPhone application that puts “a homeless encourages users to name their homeless person. person in your pocket” has today returned to the App Building the focus on personalisation, Depaul UK Store, bringing with it features that help users better allows users to enter their details to contact them in understand the issues homeless people are suffering, the future, opening up a way to donate by enabling integrating social support and easy ways to donate to SMS donations via the app. homeless charities. Fante “Mimi” June 4, 1917 June 12, 2010 3 Donate Online www.homelessvoice.org/donate Our Dedicated Readers, Over the years I have written stories on just how much help we need. It is that time once again for me to ask each and every one of you to help us in several ways. Recently I have had so many personal issues involving my own health, the loss of my best friend Johnny, now my loving dad who has just been diagnosed with two forms of deadly cancer. Last month after being told over and over my dad was cancer free of the liver and pancreas we soon found out that the doctors made a mistake. Before I get any further I ask each and every one of you to pray for my dad that he receives a loving miracle. I will now say Amen to your prayers. Also please pray for Dennis James as well he is our client and friend he has lung cancer. Better yet why don’t we all just stop doing what we are doing and pray for a cure for all cancers? Cancer affects every one of us and it is about time there is a cure. With all this happening it has caused a major strain on this shelter system. Many of you know that Johnny passed away a few months back but what many of you do not know is that I got hurt trying to get Johhny out of the building when we had one emergency caused by Florida Power and Light. Basically FPL caused an outage in the building and when we told them Johnny was on oxygen and we had a backup system running his oxygen and for them not to shut the remaining power off until they spoke to me, they shut it down and we had to hand carry Johnny out of the building. When this happened we had to carry him down three flights of stairs and I got pretty banged up. Then about a week later we kept on telling FPL we had issues with our AC and other electrical items that they broke- a small fire/smoke incident took place and I had to carry Johnny out of the building again who would not leave because he wanted the .32 cents in his shoe he kept on dropping his shoe in the fire exit and was not allowing others to evacuate the building. I felt really bad after I screamed at him to let the shoe go so I could carry him out. Johnny had one leg missing and he did not have his prosthetics’ on so he was trying to walk down the stairs with just one leg. I kept on getting banged against the wall and missing steps and having short little falls that ripped some of my tendons in half. Smoke was coming in through the AC that was damaged by the first FPL incident and we did not know exactly what was on fire, but what we did know was that smoke is what causes most deaths in a fire so getting everyone out of the building was very important. From all of this I have to have six surgeries. My left foot, my left knee, my right knee, and both shoulders and a hernia surgery. I also reinjured my back and neck which was pretty good in the last seven years. Then I must have tore up my hips or my hips now hurt and burn so bad maybe because of the way I am limping from my other injuries. I have been in and out of a wheel chair for about the last six months and only doing my board responsibilities. The old Sean Cononie is not able to perform running the shelter like I use to. As soon as I lose some weight they are willing to do the surgeries to get me back to being somewhat normal , I hope. However, losing the weight has been hard so I am kind of in a standstill presently. The shelter has lost me from my every day work at the shelter. From this, we had to hire more people to fill in for me. Plus with me not doing my normal work trying to get funds in to the shelter system it has caused some setbacks. For those of you that knew Johnny or knew of him you knew he gave me personal strength for this whole agency was started because of him. Anytime I wanted to quit because of the hours I put in and the personal stress I would run into Johnny who just being in his presence made this man know in his heart that I needed to be here helping people like him. There was something so beautiful about this homeless man who had a heart bigger than anyone I ever knew. His smiles, his comments and his warmth was what I needed. Losing Johnny was like losing a child of special needs. I really miss him and so do all the clients who live here. Johnny was the backbone of COSAC for he was the King of COSAC. His bed was outside my office door because he did not like to be closed up in a room. So as I made my way in and out of my office many times thought out the day Johnny and I had always time to talk. If John was eating something he was quick to offer it to me. Johnny had nothing but was always willing to share whatever he had in his hands. If he was holding something in his hands he always offered to share it with me or many others. Still to this day his bed is still there in the hallway saved for special people who will come to us in the future. I will be traveling back and forth to Jacksonville for now it is five days there and five days at the shelter. In my van sits six piles of past due paper work that has been due for moths. With me being in and out of the hospitals and working so many hours I am behind in everything. Mark has set up video conferencing for any emergencies and Lois and the gang is holding up the fort just like when I had bacterial meningitis and almost died about five years ago. As most of you know we do not get any funding and we the homeless create every dollar that comes in to a shelter that serves the population that does not qualify for the main stream shelters. We take the ones that are severely mentally ill, chronic and severely disabled. At the main stream shelters they only get in if they can complete and graduate a program. This newspaper you are reading operates about 14 different agencies as well as getting one of the first jets in to Haiti with 70 doctors on board and thousands and thousands dollars worth of antibiotics needed from all the amputations taking place during the earthquake last year, (Podcast Episode #6 on HomelessVoice.org) The homeless themselves raised the funds, packed supplies into trucks and carried it from one truck to the next. It was a repeat of all the hurricanes our disaster agency responded to about five years ago when Florida was struck with one hurricane after another. With all this happening to us and me, it has affected our funds and we need you now more than ever. We need to raise about $500,000 dollars and we need to do it fast. Remember those days about 10 years ago when we needed to raise a little over a million to buy the shelter. Well that happened and the shelter is paid in full. Not only the shelter but a few smaller shelters are now paid off. All because you the people buy our paper. We need each of you to please buy a raffle ticket by following the directions on the back cover and then we also need each of you who buy our paper to send in a check for ten dollars. If each of you did this, this would put us through our crisis period allowing me to do what I need to do and allowing the shelter system and the 14 other smaller agencies to still run without interference. Agencies like our outreach agency who takes our make shift ambulance out on the streets with our nurses and doctors getting medical assistance to those who do not seek shelter. It is so important for this to be done. Please come by and see your shelter and our shelter, I say yours and ours because it is not the governments shelter it belongs to the people who made this happen. This is an age old question that I believe humankind knows the answer to, but continues to try anyway. When a power abuses it’s power as in the case of Nazi Germany, other powers are called upon to stop the abuse and bring about peace. This sounds right in theory, yet throughout history what usually occurs is more violence for a longer period of time. I was at a college commencement recently and in his opening remarks, the schools president mentioned the death of Osama Bin Laden. A good portion of the audience applauded and cheered. I thought is this what we have become. To take another human life and cheer about it. What happened to due process? Don’t we love America because we are a nation that respects law.? Can killing stop killing? Is it sane behavior to kill a doctor who is performing abortions? To come to grips with all of this we have to look to the cross. The killing of the most innocent of all who said, “Father forgive them, they know not what they do.” So often we human beings know not what we do. In the words of Saint Francis of Assisi we pray “Lord make me an instrument of your peace, where there is hatred let me sow love, where there is injury your pardon and where there is despair let me bring hope, and where there is doubt, true faith in you. Enjoy all of Gods’ beautiful wonders as we go about being an instrument of Gods’ peace Deacon Bob Bedbugs With Drug-Resistant MRSA ‘Superbug’ Germ Found Mike Stobbe Hate insects? Afraid of germs? Researchers are reporting an alarming combination: bedbugs carrying a staph “superbug.” Canadian scientists detected drugresistant staph bacteria in bedbugs from three hospital patients from a downtrodden Vancouver neighborhood. Bedbugs have not been known to spread disease, and there’s no clear evidence that the five bedbugs found on the patients or their belongings had spread the MRSA germ they were carrying or a second less dangerous drug-resistant bacteria. However, bedbugs can cause itching that can lead to excessive scratching. That can cause breaks in the skin that make people more susceptible to these germs, noted Dr. Marc Romney, one of the study’s authors. The study is small and very preliminary. “But it’s an intriguing finding” that needs to be further researched, said Romney, medical microbiologist at St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver. The hospital is the closest one to the poor Downtown Eastside neighborhood near the city’s waterfront. Romney said he and his colleagues did the research after seeing a simultaneous boom in bedbugs and MRSA cases from the neighborhood. Five bedbugs were crushed and analyzed. MRSA, or methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, was found on three bugs. MRSA is resistant to several types of common antibiotics and can become deadly if it gets through the skin and into the bloodstream. Two bugs had VRE, or vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium, a less dangerous form of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Both germs are often seen in hospitals, and experts have been far more worried about nurses and other health care workers spreading the bacteria than insects. It’s not clear if the bacteria originated with the bedbugs or if the bugs picked it up from already infected people, Romney added. The study was released Wednesday by Emerging Infectious Diseases, a publication of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Saying Good bye to Miss Marilyn (Continued from pg 7) and was able to return to the shelter. She did not want to go to the nursing home, she wanted to be back in to room 205 with her loving Cat Mr. Mann. For her five years she was here, she went form a client who was homeless, to working at the front desk. I have to say I was quite amazed that her ability to work so efficient really paid off at the front desk. She was a very understanding person and when a person came to us in need she was first to jump in line to offer a healing and helping hand. What I liked most about her, it was her willingness to help young ladies who were abusing drugs especially Xanax, Soma and Opiates such as Oxycontin. She always went out of her way to come to me and say, “Sean you know this girl Miss Smith? She is using pills.” To me this meant the young lady was in need of desperate help. A few times her insight saved a few of these young ladies. Last month, we thought Marilyn was doing fine, she had went back to the Nursing home and we thought she would be out in a week or two. But then we got a call from the Aventura Hospital saying that we needed to make arrangements for the body of Marilyn Georges. I about hit the floor. We had no call at all from the nursing home that she had had a heart attack at the nursing home and was transported to Aventura Hospital. I was shell shocked because I cannot believe we got no calls because it is our policy to be there at the hospital when people are this sick. We could have held her hand telling her we loved her and prayed for her soul. I was just so upset that she died by herself. I not only said a prayer for salvation for her but I actually apologized to her as I looked above. What can I say about Miss Marilyn Georges? She was classy, she was a hippie left over from the 60’s, she had the knowledge of a rehab therapist, she was a fun and loving person who was not afraid to say, “I love you.” She also was a proud grandma. She was a person who deserved a decent funeral. So we gave her one at the shelter. At least 70 residents showed up and yes we always pray for the dead asking the Lord to forgive them for their sins. One of my favorite prayers I pray myself is that I ask God to forgive all who have died in the past, present, and for those who will die in the future. It is my belief that by me asking the Lord to forgive all people of all times and to forgive those who hate God or for the non believers all people who ever walked the earth will end up in Heaven. So today I ask you to do the same. To you Marilyn, I love you honey and may you meet every new face that walks into Heaven and say, “How may I help you,” just like at the shelter. 2011 Grand Raffle COSAC HOMELESS ASSISTANCE CENTER INC. You Get Paid For Your Art Work, So You Must Be A Pro It was the early part of May and Lynn came up to me and said, “Sean you are a professional artist can I speak to you about my art?” I told her, “ just because I have an art gallery does not mean I am a famous artist, besides have you seen the gallery it is very tiny.” She looked at me and smiled and asked if I would hang her painting up in the gallery so she could sell it. She had said that someone wanted to give her $40 for her painting, but she wanted at least $75 so she could make a $60 profit. I then explained to her that sometimes I buy art work especially from homeless people because I feel that homeless people are very talented and to me, it helps me remember the person. I also told her that just because I may buy the painting doesn’t mean I may keep it, that sometimes I give special paintings to special people especially when they get their own place. I hinted if I like it, there is value to it and when art work goes to different homes or different owners it makes that art work even more valuable. The simple transfer of owners keeps her art The Homeless Voice May 2011 (Continued from pg 7) 9 work alive. A few days later I got a knock on my office door and when I opened the door all I could see was two small hands holding up a large canvas painted with a bunch of loud colors and at first I thought I had painted it. After I looked even more I still did not see the face but I knew it was not my work because it had a pattern and my work is abstract with no hint of a real picture that made sense. Then I heard a very shallow voice say “Do you like it?” I said, “For Sure.” I then explained to her that you do not sell art work for under a $100 for this size, the canvas alone is at least $10 and there is a cost for paint. I asked her if I could buy it and offered her $100 for it. She said no you can buy it for the $75 and I said to her “You Get Paid For Your Art Work, So You Must Be A Pro and you need to sell it to me for $100.” I then wrote her a check for $100 and all she could do was to smile and then ask where she could cash it. I then cashed the check for her at the shelter and then she exited the office. I went to the security video cameras and watched as she exited the front desk area and as she exited she was holding up the five twenty dollar bills and smiled so big- almost as big as her painting. 2011 Grand Raffle Thank you to all of our supporters and readers who over the years have helped us tremendously.
