“Touchdown for the Homeless”
Friday, October 3rd, the Service Leader Executive Board (SLEB) will be hosting its annual event, Cardboard Village.
Living in a cardboard box for an evening is definitely an eye opening experience. Students who have participated in
years past agree that this event gives
them an idea of what so many homeless
people face on a daily basis. If you have
never participated in this event, do not
hesitate! You can preregister online via
the service learning tab, in Pyle during
mealtimes, or feel free to come the night of the event and just register then!
The cost of this event is $5 per person; all proceeds will go directly to Clinton County
Homeless Shelter. Participants can feel free to make their own house, but it is tons of fun to
grab a group of friends and build a house together; cardboard is not provided, individuals are
responsible for bringing their own materials. SLEB will be serving all of the “village” hot
soup for dinner and oatmeal for breakfast!
The theme this year is “Touchdown for the Homeless,” so wear your favorite football
team’s gear and deck out your box with their emblems. If you wish to spray paint your
box, you are responsible for bringing your own drop cloth to cover the ground before
you begin painting. Whether you support OSU, Michigan, the Cincinnati Bengal's, or
the Pittsburg Steelers, SLEB cannot wait to see you display your fall football spirit!
Houses must be complete and participants must be checked in by 8p.m. This event is designed to give students a taste of what being homeless is like so SLEB is requiring everyone
to stay until 5a.m. Saturday morning, to receive community service hours for your time.
Houses will be build in front of the Center for Service and Civic Engagement. SLEB looks
forward to seeing all of our fellow students out at Cardboard Village!
Don’t forget to log your hours! forms can be founD on
the WC webpage, WC@Home or in the service house.

Fall Football Frenzy
Flag football frenzy is a flag football tournament
set up to raise money for and organization called
Ears to You. This organization works directly with
people who are fighting with cancer. Ears To You is
a nonprofit dedicated to lifting the spirits of cancer
patients by creating a moment of joy and hope.
They work to boost the self-esteem of and provide
hope to cancer patients of all ages through the
donation of earrings and hats. Ears To You helps
cancer patients (men, women and children) who
are undergoing treatments for any type of cancer!
Ears to You locally started in Akron, Oh, and now
has branched out to different hospitals in the State
of Ohio, and Pennsylvania. All of the proceeds the
event raises will go directly to their cause. The
tournament will be held at 4:30 pm on October
12th. It will be played in Williams’s stadium under
the lights. T-shirts for the event will also be
available for purchase. The winners will receive a
trophy as well as free t-shirts. So please come out,
have fun and support a great cause!
9/11 Day of Service Fun
The 9/11 Day of Service was a great success this
year. 5 students, along with Tara Lydy and Mark
Denniston volunteered at Community Action to
clean out and mulch flower beds. The group got
the chance to weed and mulch a few of the
individual gardens for the residents along with the
large flower bed at the entrance. Community
Action was thankful for the hard work, and would
love to have Wilmington College volunteers return
in the future. Pictured below are junior, Abby
Simmons, and sophomore, Taylor Dill, spreading
mulch at Community Commons. All the students
had fun working outside on such a beautiful day.
NATIONAL VOTER REGISTRATION DAY
Why vote; because it is your civic duty. Why should you care; because if you did not have the ability to voice your
opinions and extend your ballot, then government as we know it would cease to exist. While politics are often a
topic of debate, the U.S. is blessed with a strong democratic system. On September 23rd, Wilmington College
participated in National Voter Registration Day. By tabling in Pyle Center on the 23rd and 24th, WISE fellow, Megan
Canfield, was able to help 25 students register to vote. Twice that many students stopped by her table inquiring
after absentee voter registration. Forms to register for absentee ballots will be available in Pyle Center, look for
Megan tabling in the coming month. If you have any questions concerning voter registration or this Novembers
election please feel free to contact Megan via her Wilmington email address at ([email protected]).
