Get them outside V IDEO games, social media and YouTube – these are increasingly the preferred pastimes of our children instead of playing outdoors. The long-term impacts of this change in the nature of childhood are not yet fully understood. But one thing is certain – we are facing a bigger issue than the “square eyes” our parents warned us about. There is a correlation between the decrease in unstructured outdoor play and increasing rates of childhood obesity, childhood depression, medical prolbems and a greater general disconnection from the outside world. We need to understand the importance of nature play or outdoor unstructured play to the development of children’s imaginations and social intelligence and their decision making, conflict resolution and risk assessment abilities. Put simply, we need to get our kids outside terrorising critters, climbing trees, negotiating the rules of a game with other kids and letting themselves, and their imaginations, run rampant. Unstructured outdoor play is the birthright of all children, but we are now facing a situation where it has become necessary to develop special programs to Kampers Mob: 0409 725 620 Site: 604 www.westcoastcampers.com.au actively engage families in this style of play. These include initiatives developed by Nature Play WA, such as the Passport to an Amazing Childhood program, Family Nature Clubs and Active School Diaries. These have been developed over the past three years to help drive awareness and provide simple opportunities for children to interact with the natural world. These days, it seems the only time families actively engage in these activities is when they are on holidays away from the home. Nature Play WA is an unapologetic proponent of time spent Karavan outside engaged in nature. National parks, caravan parks and camping grounds are the gold standard but we don’t mind if you are pitching the tent in the backyard or getting the swags out on the back lawn. Get them outside – they definitely need it and you probably don’t realise how much you do, too. Kruiser Black Caviar 2014 P E RT H C A R AVA N & C A M P I N G S H OW 11 Luc Longley, former professional basketballer and NaturePlay ambassador, with daughter Lily, enjoy getting out in the bush. Luc still a bush boy H E is one of Australia’s greatest sporting success stories and one of a very small number of people on the planet in possession of three NBA championship rings. For Luc Longley, that success is due largely to a childhood that was spent outdoors either roaming around Fremantle with his brothers or camping along the Swan River or the South-West. “When I went to college in America, in New Mexico, I would head off into the bush with a backpack, a water purifier and a dog and go for a couple of days,” he says. “For me, it was a crucial connection back to the outdoors lifestyle I grew up with as well as being important to the development of the resilience, core fitness and self-awareness that you need in your late teens when you are learning to be a man.” Longley says some of his strongest childhood memories are of camping trips with his family. “Going camping to me was the ultimate reward, everything else was just marking time until you headed off to the campground,” he says. “And it was not just camping, getting ready to go was almost as good as the actual camping trip. “The days before you left, getting ready with Dad, going through all the gear in the shed, the smell of the canvas, making sure everything was good to go and then packing it all into the car or the trailer.” He said camping represented one of those rare times when the rules were different, a magic time when a kid could get as grubby and wild as they liked and no one was too bothered. “In fact, you didn’t even have to have a wash a lot of the time so you could get pretty earthy and there was the whole hunter gatherer thing that you never got to do in ‘real’ life,” he says. “For me, camping was also the place where you learned things, valuable things – like how the moon moves, the relationships between wind, clouds and rain, gathering and chopping wood, building fires, how to dig a trench around your tent to keep it dry when the rain that you saw build up actually hit. “Camping as a kid was the only time I didn’t have to be woken up – I would get up and be out of bed and dressed before anyone else so I could get the fire going and if I was really early, I could get breakfast started before anyone else got out of bed. “Strangely enough, I still like doing that.” PAUL JARVIS, NATUREPLAY CHECK OUT OUR EXCITING RANGE OF ATLANTIC ECO AND NEW GENERATION CARAVANS ALONG WITH THE FANTASTIC OPAL RANGE. Historically, solar panels for the outdoors have converted sunlight to power at eight to 14 per cent. But the new Folda Solar Direct ranges of the compact folding canvas and semi-flexible panels now have a conversion rating of 19-20 per cent or more. Using the latest technology from the US, these products generate greater output per square metre of cells than old technology, making them smaller and easier to store and carry. There are panels and kits for all outdoor applications, as well as for the marine sector. These hi-tech panels start at a mere $129 and offer a range of wattages starting from 30 Watts. Folda Solar Direct is also wellrespected for its educational stance about solar power and company representative John Brown will present “Tips on Buying Solar Panels” at the show seminar series each day. This interactive presentation will help you make the right solar power decision. Look out for the presentation in the program to be sure you know what you need, and what to look out for, before you buy. Created by respected caravan designer Peter Russell, the Seachange caravan is a premium off-road van for caravan owners who appreciate superior design, functionality and luxury. It has been an exciting 12 months for the renowned premium off-road caravan brand. In August Seachange released the revolutionary Tuffnut 420. The Tuffnut – with its sandwich panel construction, cafe-style seating, rolled roof design, off-road tyres, and lightweight fibreglass exterior – is built for serious travelling. Seachange specialises in customising layouts to suit individual needs and in September, Seachange completed its first motorhome commissioned by long-term Haines Group customers, who wanted something specific to their needs. The brand now boasts eight models and the vans come in three classes according to off-road driving requirements: Escape, Liberty and Elite. The caravans have varied layouts and central or rear access. In 2014, Seachange will expand its line up to include two rear-door models. The caravans and most of their components are made at the company’s Brisbane factory, and the company can deliver custom vans within a few months of ordering. Now there’s a product that can help drivers reduce this risk and it will be on display at the Caravan & Camping Show. Polaris will exhibit the benefits of the Polaris HUD, a product that helps reduce the likelihood of speeding and accidents by displaying your vehicle’s speed on to the windscreen in a clear, transparent digital format directly in the driver’s line of vision. The driver can see clearly what speed they are traveling at without taking their eyes off the road to check the speedo. The Polaris retails at $129, but compared with a speeding fine, it may prove money well spent. The Polaris HUD plugs into your car’s cigarette lighter and the speed is calculated via GPS satellites. T HE big decisions prospective fishermen face are: What species will they target, where and how. Knowing what you’re keen to catch is crucial to determining what equipment you will need and how much money you’re going to spend. “Buying fishing gear is similar to getting kitted out for golf. You can spend hundreds or even thousands of dollars,” says Tyrone “Pablo” Yahiya, of Tackle HQ, in Kingsley. “Is your gear for annual trips, or are you looking to fill the freezer with fillet, which means you will need circle hooks for bottom fishing with sinkers.” Beginners starting fishing off the rocks or the beach can find entry-level rods and reels starting at about $60, a tackle box from $70 and a good combination of lures for about $100. A good species to target would be tailor, an inshore reef species found near Perth. A step up from tailor would be mulloway, a scale fish found in gullies and reefs that can reach up to 30kg and tend to be even bigger farther south. “For someone thinking big and going north, typically to Exmouth, Coral Bay or Montebello Islands for epic sports fishing for giant trevally it can get pricey,” Tyrone says of the premier league. “The ultra-enthusiastic are happy spending up to $6000 on gear to take on this hard-pulling, pelagic species.” For these sports fishing activities, anglers will require big popper lures (either artificial timber and/or plastic) and heavy gear for casting into the whitewash or breaking reefs to snare “catch and release species”. It’s not uncommon for fishers to fork out $1400 for a seven-foot rod, or even $1000 for a reel, with lure poppers, stick bait and big, barbless hooks rounding off the required appendages for typical, trevally-type sports fishing. Alternately jigging – fishing with a metal lure for fish at the bottom of the ocean – has taken off in WA where fish are targeted right up through the water column. Table species such as the West Australian dhufish, pink snapper, harlequin, bald chin grouper and mackrel are all prized catches with a jig rod. Farther north, popular fish in the jig crosshairs include blue bone, coral trout, red emperor and rankin cod. Prices start from $60, but real enthusiasts can pay up to $800 for a jig rod. It’s made for camping and pushing the envelope in the great outdoors, where ARB founder Tony Brown cut his teeth in 1975 four-wheel-driving through the Top End of Australia relying on home made or ill-fitting equipment that was not designed for the harsh Outback of Australia. As a result, Tony’s expertise was regularly called on, be it to repair broken bull bars or damaged roof racks. This led Anthony Ronald Brown (ARB) into his garage where he began manufacturing high quality, 4X4 accessories that could meet the demand of tough Australian conditions. Today ARB is the largest manufacturer and distributor in Australia and at the Caravan & Camping Show the company will display dozens of accessories tailored to maximising outdoor adventures and getting your 4x4 into its natural habitat. It’s one of the most beautiful landscapes on Earth, but the Outback is also one of the harshest, most remote terrains on the planet. After 14 years of taking people on outdoor camping expeditions, Campfire Escapes trip leader Nick Underwood has some sage advice that could save your life or, at the very least, give you the security and confidence to enjoy camping and travelling safely in Australia. “An EPIRB (Emergency Positioning Indicating Radio Beacon) with built in GPS capability, decent maps and knowing where you are to start off with is important,” Nick says. But before you even drive off, the cardinal rule is to tell people where you are going and when you expect to return, Nick says. “But then don’t change the course and go somewhere else, because if you do then get lost or in trouble, nobody will know where to find you,” he says. It goes without saying that water is gold when it comes to survival in remote, hot regions of Australia. Nick recommends at least five litres of water a person for each day, but says he often takes 20 litres a person for those who like to wash and even shower. “More is always better than less when it come to water,” he says. If your wheels do break down, he says the most important thing to remember is “never leave your vehicle under any circumstances”. “It’s easy to see from the air and it’s got shade, shelter and water,” Nick says. While first aid kits are always included on camping expeditions, Nick says properly equipped 4X4 vehicles also have good repair kits for tubeless tyres. “Most people who go camping have a tent, canopy or awning,” he says. “If you didn’t have these you could make a shelter from the bush to keep out of the sun and survive the heat. “You could also open your vehicle’s doors and windows and sit out of the sun.” Ultimately, Nick says there is no substitute for experience when it comes to driving on sand or gravel tracks, where “situation awareness” is an essential survival tool. “Knowing where you are is the most important thing. “And even if you are lost, with maps and GPS you can study tracks, roads and your surroundings to see where you are in relation to, for instance, a nearby hill.” Ô See Nick’s towing tips next page. 23 CHECK YOUR LOAD FOR A CANE TOAD Cane toads, introduced to Queensland in 1935, are major environmental pests in WA, significantly damaging our biodiversity and ecosystems. Cane toads are great stowaways and can be easily transported in your luggage. When you are packing to leave an area where cane toads are present, it is important to thoroughly check you are not accidentally carrying one. Cane toads can hide in many places, such as: Ô Boxes, crates and pallets. Ô Building materials. Ô Camping equipment, such as folded tarps and tents, and cooler boxes. That’s the advice of Nick Underwood, a trip leader at Campfire Escapes, who has been taking rookies, in particular new four-wheel-drive owners seeking to gain confidence in the bush, on camping expeditions for 14 years. The blunt reality applicable to any towed object is that if it becomes detached on the road, it becomes a loose missile with potentially disastrous, even fatal, consequences. As a result Nick says before the key goes near the ignition, a series of safety checks are essential before towing in your 4WD, ute or sedan. “For starters make sure the tow ball down weight matches the vehicle,” he says. “You don’t want to put too heavy a load on the tow bar because that will lighten the steering and make it a difficult proposition to tow. “Then you must make sure the jockey wheels are up before you check the brakes, lights and so forth.” Packing the camper and the vehicle is also important for safety and Nick says the rule of thumb is to pack heavier items low and lighter objects higher up, for instance on roof racks. “Try and pack things like jerry cans of extra water or fuel down low and make sure they are well-secured. “I have known of cars rolling and gas bottles flying around like missiles. “It’s also advisable to try and pack things in the camper. That puts less pressure on the suspension than loading up the car, which changes the handling dynamics of the vehicle,” Nick says. Once you’re out on the road, it can be easy to forget you are towing another object, until you’re forced to brake on a steep incline or turn into a tight corner. “Most campers will tow well behind a vehicle, provided there is enough power. So it’s easy to forget you have a camper in tow until you get to a steep hill. Awareness is critical, especially when you are cornering and can’t go as fast,” Nick says. “So slow down, particularly on deflate tyres according to the weight above the wheels on the camper and the vehicle to create a longer footprint on the sand. “My best advice to anybody towing for the first time is to do a shake-down trip, driving on dirt roads in particular to get used to how the car and trailer react in all conditions. A couple of days out on country roads to see how it all behaves works wonders and builds confidence,” Nick says. gravel because that can be like driving on marbles and you must keep an eye on your speed and the unit you are towing. “The last thing you want is to take a corner too hard and have the van or camper slide out in front of an oncoming car.” Nick advises towing only off-road campers with good clearance on beaches and says if the equipment is up to the task, then the important thing is to FULL AUTOMATIC SATELLITE SYSTEMS EMS 85cm dish for full coverage around Australia NEW Advanced Skew Technology Heavy duty gear box ox for high wind stability ty y and reliability SOLOSAT portable 80cm dish for full coverage around Australia The system will locate the satellite at the push of a button. There are Caravans, Camper Trailers, Pop Top Caravans, Motorhomes, Camper Vans, 5th Wheelers and Camper Caravans - they can all be described as an RV. In Western Australia, if you can tow it or drive it and you sell them you need a WA Dealers Licence or a Salesperson Licence and need to be compliant to both Australian standards and also to specific WA regulations. So ask yourself, what am I going to use it for? There are a few questions to ponder, “Where do we want to go? Off-road or not?” “What style of vehicle do we want? Solid wall caravan or soft wall camper?” “Something to tow or a self propelled vehicle like a Camper Van or Motorhome?” and most importantly “How much do I want to spend?”. Buying? In WA any RV purchase price advertised or quoted by a dealer has to include all costs. In other words the price you should pay for an RV must include the price of the RV, licensing and dealer delivery fees so it is ready for you to pick up. You SHOULD NOT be asked to licence the RV yourself. WA Dealers must be licenced to sell an RV and comply to all WA Regulations relating to compliance of the RV to Australian Design Standards. There’s no stamp duty on a caravan or camper trailer in WA. Can my vehicle tow the weight? If you already have your tow vehicle it may limit your RV choices. A larger heavier RV will require a larger and more powerful vehicle than a smaller lighter RV. Your tow vehicle will also have maximum ball load and that should also match your RV. In other words, you need to check before you buy your RV! Different vehicles have different towing capacities, so you must ensure your towing vehicle has sufficient capacity to tow the trailer when it is fully laden. Your WA dealer will be able to tell you what your vehicle can tow. So have a look at all the options, ask plenty of questions of the salesperson and remember there are plenty of styles of RV available - and one of them will be right for you! Come along to one of our seminars or visit our stand (No. 607) which has one of our homes on display, noon daily in the Seminar Room at the Caravan & Camping Show. The expression “you’re only as old as you feel” has become a mantra for many who refuse to sit back and simply watch themselves age. Fortunately, for those of us looking to make a move, there is an option available that encourages a healthy, active lifestyle without the hassles that come with home ownership: National Lifestyle Villages. Far from being a traditional retirement village, NLV sites across WA and Victoria offer independent living in the truest sense of the term. While NLV is promoted to men and women in their mid–50s, the average age of residents is 63, making the residents far younger than the average age of 83 in traditional retirement villages. “There is a generational difference between us and traditional retirement villages of about 20 years,” says John Wood, chief executive officer at NLV, which focuses on resort–style independent living health–conscious individuals. Ô Go to the Seminar Room, each day at noon, to find out more about National Lifestyle Villages. His passion for tyres extends from small car tyres all the way through to giant earthmover models. Adam’s TyreSafe Australia seminar on tyre maintenance will address major safety issues surrounding your tyres. If you’re intrigued to know all about the naturally occurring electromechanical process of metals attempting to return to its natural unrefined state, CouplerTec will tell you all about it at the Caravan & Camping Show. You will be enlightened on how iron, oxygen and water (including air moisture) combine and the rusting process can be accelerated when iron is subjected to nature’s minerals such as salt and other chemicals, mud, mineral elements, moisture, humidity, and temperature fluctuations. CouplerTec will show you how its technology works to interfere with the metal’s ability to react with oxygen by preventing the opposite charge of iron combining with oxygen and then losing electrons in oxidation, forming rust. CouplerTec’s Capacitive Coupling Technology achieves this by creating a negative (–) electrostatic surface charge on the metal surface of the protected structure. The (–) Oxygen atom is repelled by the (–) electrostatic surface charge. This (–) electrostatic surface charge is created by building a capacitor within the protected motor vehicle. The CouplerTec Electronic Rust Proofing System consists of two components that build a capacitor within the protected structure or motor vehicle, the CouplerTec Electronic Module and the Capacitive Coupler. Ô For more tips, go to www.lovetheoutdoors.com Cooking the old-fashioned way S OMETHING about cooking the old-fashioned way makes the entire experience – from food preparation to savouring your last bite – special. A real drawback, however, is that cooking at camp requires more time, patience, and ingenuity than kitchen cooking. Regardless of what you plan to cook on your next camping trip, there are a few food preparation staples that you shouldn’t forget. First and foremost is a box of matches and some lighter fluid. As for dishes, the true necessities are a medium to large lightweight pot, a pan of similar size, aluminum foil, and a portable grate that can be placed over a fire pit. This combination of cooking equipment can be used to prepare just about anything from bacon and eggs to beans and pasta. Lastly, don’t forget your spatula and tongs – pulling food off a fire bare-handed is far from pleasant. COOKING METHODS The most basic form of campfire cooking is to use direct heat. There are two ways to accomplish this. The first, an old Scouts’ trick, is to wrap food items individually in aluminum foil and place them in hot coals. It requires frequent checking, but is very effective for foods that require high heat. The second, method is simply to place a grate over an open fire and grill your food. The heat from this source is less direct, so it will take a little longer to cook. Apply oil to keep foods from sticking. For soups, stews, and pastas, build the fire, let it die down to hot coals, and place the pot or pan over them. Or, if you don’t feel confident about building a campfire, you can of course take a barbecue with you. Prof Whiteley plans to collect soil samples from across the vastness of WA to create a snapshot of the biodiversity hidden within. Results generated from this research will help us deal with key sustainability challenges including agricultural practice, climate change regulation and mine site rehabilitation. MicroBlitz engages volunteers throughout WA to discover the hidden bio-diversity of the soil beneath their feet. Through MicroBlitz, volunteer citizen scientists simply collect soil samples that they send to a centralised laboratory for DNA sequencing and basic chemical analysis. It’s a perfect way for travellers – and especially their children – to be part of vital scientific research for our state. HOW TO GET INVOLVED 1 People can get a kit by visiting the website (www.microblitz. com.au) to register as a MicroBlitzer. They may sign up for a single or multiple kits. Travellers can take samples at different locations. Once they have their kit it is as simple as taking a photograph, recording location, digging a small hole, collecting about 200g of soil and posting it back to the Microblitz team. The kit and postage is paid for by the project so there is no cost to volunteer samplers. 2 Kits are very light and portable, easy to take away and requires very little room – basically everything fits into large lunch size zip lock bag. Kits include everything required to take a sample (except a trowel): instructions, string and peg square quadrat (for marking out area), recording sheet, sample bags and return postage packs. Part of the kit (the quadrat) is recyclable and gets returned with sample taken. Once the sample is taken it should be stored in cold space such as fridge/esky until posted at the first opportunity. The kits are very child friendly and Microblitz reckons anyone aged five to 95 can take a sample. Young children may need an adult to assist them to work out and record information. Later this year an app will be introduced that will collect information required for sampling, which Microblitz believes will be popular with younger volunteers. 3 Citizen science volunteers will be able to get feedback about their specific samples and will be able to access information about samples from other locations. This information will enable volunteers to make comparisons about the main groups of microbial communities in samples and provide them with some basic chemical information. In addition, Microblitz will feature articles and updates about the findings of several research questions that the team and other projects are using the information for. These include case studies of agricultural properties such as farms and wineries, mine site rehabilitation investigations and ways in which information yielded from Microblitz is adding value to others’ research efforts. This information will be made available on the Microblitz website later this year. oad O n & O ff R Aluminum Frame SITE No. 518 9534 9466 Alum inum Fram www.downunderrv.com.au e t50: HAULER’S 4-*%&0654 t'".*-:7"/4 "--6/%&3 $46,900 DL20852 54 2 0 14 P E RT H C A R AVA N & C A M P I N G S H OW Resort-style villages H AVE your kids left home?
