It is now over a year since the last training courses were run and we have been asked when the next courses will be held. We are delighted to announce that these will be in September and you can choose to attend either Lichfield (Sept 11th) or Keele (Sept 17th). This new CPPE training has been arranged at the request of your LPCs so for all those newly joined HLPs, or if you simply haven’t got around to doing any leadership training yet, please go online to www.cppe.ac.uk and book on to the events. As with all CPPE events there will be food at 7pm, the event starts at 7.30pm and we will finish by 9.30pm. Although this is not running until September please book now so that the event can go ahead. Also, although we require our pharmacists to attend, why not ask any registered technicians to register to come along too – this event will help them lead the dispensary team and with any projects they are running. If you have any questions just email [email protected] Welcome to Balance Street Pharmacy, Uttoxeter. Pharmacist Tim Hames and Healthy Living Champions Lynn and Wendy! Healthy Living Pharmacy Newsletter Issue 10 June 2014 Continence Awareness for June and July Health Promotion for June and July is Continence Awareness . The Area Team will be providing a small amount of posters and leaflets to help Pharmacies promote this campaign. Resources are quite limited however, you can visit the websites opposite and obtain some resources and I will attach some PDF’s from the bladder and bowel foundation, which you can print out and use. There will be a sponsored continence project for HLP’s which is due to be delivered in October, so please keep hold of your materials to re-use for this event. Tips for promoting continence awareness: Create a display with posters provided by AT and resources available from the websites and PDF’s. You could incorporate Continence products in your display, eg; Tena pants/pads. Ask customers who buy products if they are aware there are medicines that could help. Inform customers who buy products that they can obtain an ‘access to toilet card’ from the bladder and bowel foundation. Advice on pelvic floor exercises Advice on fluid intake Put leaflets into prescription bags Record each contact you have made www.bladderandbowelfundation.org http://www.ics.org/committees/continencepromotion/ wew Pelvic floor exercises are one of the first-line treatments for stress urinary incontinence (SUI). Tips to help people manage continence problems: Drink normally - about 6-8 large glasses of fluid a day, avoiding caffeine if you can. Water is best! And don’t get into the habit of going to the toilet ‘just in case’. Go only when you feel your bladder if full. Watch your weight - extra weight puts extra strain on your pelvic floor muscles. Once you have regained control of your bladder, don’t forget your pelvic floor muscles. Continue to do your pelvic floor exercises a few times each day to ensure that the problem does not come back. Healthy Living Pharmacy Newsletter Issue 10 June 2014 Here are some brilliant Health Zones from HLP’s for last month Tahlia and Healthy Living Champions, Debbie Cresswell, Helen Brayford and Mandy Buckley have created an eye catching and informative healthy living display. Good use of free resources available from the British Heart Foundation! The use of the bowel cancer resources have been used in an engaging way to attract people to read the information. Well Done Co-op 21-23 London road, Chesterton! Jackie and team form Co-op Pharmacy in Jamage road, Talke have used a bright table cloth to attract attention! This is a clear bowel cancer campaign with an abundance of leaflets, posters and information. Excellent! Sarah, Healthy Living Champion at Graham’s Pharmacy in Smallthorne have participated in many campaigns including the bowel cancer awareness promotion. Excellent use of the Healthy Living Pharmacy logo to make the health zone recognisable and an information hub for health matters. Sarah has also collected valuable data for each campaign, well done! Healthy Living Pharmacy Newsletter Issue 10 June 2014 VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR A RESEARCH STUDY OF CUSTOMERS’ PERSPECTIVES ON USING HEALTHY LIVING PHARMACIES Keele University’s School of Pharmacy in collaboration with the University of Wolverhampton and North Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent Local Pharmaceutical Committee is conducting a qualitative research study of HLP customers’ perspectives on using HLPs. We want to interview customers about their experiences of using HLP services or receiving health advice as part of a health promotion campaign, and find out the impact that customers think this had on their health-related behaviour. We are looking for as many HLPs in Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent as possible to volunteer to help us recruit customers for this research study. We are hoping to be able to begin recruiting customers from August 2014. If you would like more information about the study or want to express an interest in helping us with this study, please contact Tania Cork on: Tania Cork Chief Officer North Staffs and Stoke Local Pharmaceutical Committee Tel/fax: 01782 503672 Mobile: 07779362017 email: [email protected] Keele University would also like to invite a Healthy Living Champion from the South Staffs area to become a member of the board for this research project. This would be an exciting opportunity for a HLC to gain more experience and skills to add their continued professional development. You would be joining Tania Cork, Elissa Pateman (Healthy Living Champion in North Staffs and Healthy Living Pharmacy Facilitator) and other researchers from Keele University who are involved in the project. It would involve attending some meetings and reviewing the research materials ensuring that they are relevant and to input any advice as you may feel necessary. If you would like to volunteer to sit on the Board for the Research Project then please contact Tania Cork on the above details.
