Each customer’s needs are thoroughly analyzed before selecting the most suitable power tong. Drawing upon years of casing and tubing running services experience, Baker Hughes provides power tongs with the highest levels of safety and efficiency in mind. With power tongs ranging from 3 ½-in. (rated 0 to 4,500 ft-lb [6101 N-m]) to 31 in. (rated 0 to 85,600 ft-lb [116,058 N-m]), Baker Hughes is able to meet virtually every customer’s specific power tong requirement. Casing and tubing tongs have door safety locks and are available with integral backup systems to ensure optimum connection makeup. 20-in. casing tong with hydraulic backup Features Benefits Safety designed into each tong system Able to perform nonmarking makeup to 14 in. at high torques Full power tong range available Special tongs available for makeup of expandable tubulars Maintained and serviced to ISO 9001:2000 standards Custom-designed tongs for makeup of screens Reduces operating hazards High-torque tongs for makeup of conductors, up to 150,000 ft-lb (203,372 N-m) Ability to provide tongs to meet specific requirements Integral hydraulic backups available up to 20 in. ChromeMaster system tong running 9 5 /8-in. expandable casing ChromeMaster System Tongs for Running CRA Tubulars The velvet glove approach Industry experience has taught us that the regular carbon steel contact and deep penetration into chrome tubulars is detrimental to the working life of the completion and liners. It can contaminate the tubular, cause stress fracturing, and lead to corrosion downhole. By using the same ChromeMaster™ nonferrous tungsten carbide technology on the tongs and slips, Baker Hughes has one of the most effective systems in the industry for running CRA tubulars and the only one that uses the same technology in both tongs and slips. Central to the ChromeMaster system is the power tong. A major benefit of the system is flexibility and the ability to be fitted to conventional open-throat power tongs. BJ Services uses the ChromeMaster system jaws on 14-, 7 5/8-, 5½- and 4-in. tong models, which accommodate all tubular sizes from 2 3/8 to 14 in. Unlike other directional needled or toothed handling solutions on the market, the design provides a superior gripping area and works efficiently on coated CRA pipe. There is no need for any mesh inserts or other friction enhancer. 4 The ChromeMaster system tongs can produce up to 44,000 ft-lb (59,656 N-m) of torque. The rotor and backup on the ChromeMaster system tong uses a three-jaw, wrap-around system that maintains the grip on the pipe evenly, eliminating the chances of ovality occurring. As a result, trouble-free drift and wireline runs can be made through the bore of the tubulars. Matching ChromeMaster system jaws are used in the integrated backups. If the pipe coating comes off on the ChromeMaster system jaws, all that is needed is a brush and some rig wash to get them clean. The jaws can be used for many strings before they need to be replaced. The Baker Hughes 14-in. ChromeMaster system tong was developed to provide nonmarking connection makeup and breakout on pipe sizes up to 14 in. In tests for a major oil company, torques up to 42,000 ft-lb (59,944 N-m) were achieved with the 14-in. ChromeMaster system tong on 7-in. SM 25/35 CRA pipe. The maximum penetration of the pipe was .007 in. (0.2 mm). Gripping on 15-in. pipe is also available upon special request. Leadhand Systems Baker Hughes’ Leadhand™ systems are today’s safer solution to manipulating power tongs during casing and tubing operations. The systems are easy to install and offer improved control over conventional methods. The systems were developed to create a safer, less labor intensive way to manipulate hydraulic power tongs. Traditional methods involve power tongs weighing up to 4,400 lb (1996 kg), which make them difficult to move, often requiring three crew members to manipulate. The Leadhand MK II tong system can dramatically reduce risk of injury, as well as costs. Consisting of a hydraulically powered articulating arm, hydraulic supply and remote control panel, the system can be rigged up or down in only 10 to 15 minutes and requires only one operator to control. It is effective on floating rigs. Leadhand MK II system The tong operator not only controls the movement of the Leadhand MK II system, but also the lift cylinder for vertical movement. The operator can open and close the tong doors automatically. Operated in conjunction with the flush-mounted spider, the whole system is extremely safe. The tong operator does not need to climb on and off a work stand, and no other floor hands are needed near the well center. The Leadhand MK II system is used on conventional rigs where a tugger line is used to support the weight of the tongs and the hydraulic arm. A spring hanger or lift cylinder is used with the system. The Leadhand MK II system arm has a maximum extension of 15 ft (4.6 m). A survey of the rig floor is necessary before installation. The Leadhand MK III system is self-supporting and self-propelled. It moves easily along existing drill floor tracks on the latest generation rigs to support and propel the tong carriage to and from the well center. Today’s rig-ups are carried out faster than ever. Our system provides for automatic compensation for thread makeup. Compared with other systems, the propulsion system allows the tong to be moved forward and backward over long distances. In addition, the tong and carriage may be removed when not in use. It can also be adapted to remote operation. We aim to meet our customers’ power tong needs, whether they be for conventional or specialty tongs, such as our dual completion tongs. In addition to standard tongs, special power tongs are also available. For example, the 14-, 7 5/8-, 5½- and 4½-in. power tongs are offered with the complete ChromeMaster nonmarking jaw system, which is suitable for sizes through 14 in. Unique tongs are available for screen liner and drillpipe makeup and breakout. Baker Hughes offers an array of power tongs with integrated hydraulic backups to handle tubulars up to 20 in. diameter. These backups provide extra control for the makeup of premium connections and reduce the possibility of misalignment. When using the Leadhand system tong positioning arms, it is essential to use tongs with hydraulic backups. 6 Range of Power Tongs for Special Applications CRT 350 casing running tool for makeup of connections from the topdrive Baker Hughes offers a range of power tongs for special applications, some examples of which can be seen below. Screen liner tongs In many cases when running gravel pack screens, flush joint connections are used. This gives an opportunity to shorten the length of the tong gripping area between the screens. This change increases the productive area of the screens across the production zones where long sections of screens are run. Baker Hughes can greatly increase the efficiency of the production operations by bringing the tong and backup close together and using ChromeMaster system dies to provide nonmarking gripping on CRA pipe. Baker Hughes also provides special nonmarking handling tools for running expandable casing, including special false rotary table and bowls and slips for handling the inner strings. Tongs for running expandable casing Expandable casing presents a number of challenges for its makeup and running. Because the pipe becomes deformed from its original size, careful handling is required. Baker Hughes has developed special tongs with a variation of the ChromeMaster nonmarking gripping system using special dies. First, the jaws must be able to grip nonconventional diameters. Second, no deep penetration of the surface of the pipe should be allowed. The Baker Hughes system fulfills both of these requirements. CRT 350 tool With the CRT 350 casing tool, Baker Hughes offers an alternative to conventional power tongs for the makeup and breakout of connections. Using the power from the topdrive, the CRT 350 tool can, in addition to make up the connection, provide rotation of the entire string, circulation through the tool and reciprocation of the string. This makes it effective when running casing in long-reach or horizontal wells.
