Expandable Casing Running Services
Efficient, safe operations using purpose-built tools
A proven solution for running
expandable casing
Expandable casing offers economic and technical benefits for oil and gas wells, but the
pipe and connections must endure extreme forces during operations. Improper handling
while running can create stress points that affect expandability and the lifetime of the pipe
downhole. Its unusual size can also present a particular challenge for makeup and running.
With experienced crews and specialized tools to suit this specialty pipe, Baker Hughes
expandable casing running services ensure that your casing runs safely and efficiently,
with proper torque and minimal marking, so downhole expansion operations can
proceed smoothly.
Safety and experience
As with all Baker Hughes operations, safety is our first priority when running expandable
casing. Before each operation, a thorough job safety analysis is performed in consultation
with the rig crew and manufacturer’s representatives, and is shared at a formal safety
meeting with all participants.
LoadMaster™ single-joint compensator system
Our fit-for-purpose tools enhance the safety of the operations with specific design features
developed from our extensive expandable casing running experience. Special tong jaws,
dies and handling tools accommodate the nonstandard diameters of expandable casing
with minimal marking. Torquing, makeup and clamping systems are also available to suit
the specific needs of this high-performance technology.

Handling with care
Baker Hughes handles and runs your expandable casing
with the same care and attention we use when running
corrosion-resistant alloy tubulars. To minimize the
creation of stress points on the casing or connections,
we use minimally marking tongs, slips and safety
clamps. Specialty Baker Hughes ChromeMaster™ system
tongs with integral backup and head, or our “X” tongs
with special dies can be used. For slips, flush-mounted
spiders or hand slips with nonmarking ChromeMaster
system inserts are appropriate. Hydraulic actuated safety
clamps are also available.
DopeMaster™ system
For added care when pulling or running these sensitive
joints, the Baker Hughes LoadMaster™ compensator
system may be used to assist with the makeup or
breakout of connections. The technology provides
weight compensation for lifting operations to protect
the critical thread and seal areas of the casing.
When running an inner string for the setting tool,
a false rotary table is used with a small bowl and slips.
In addition to supporting the tool system while running,
the table aids in guiding the string for proper placement.
Ensuring precise torque
Some types of expandable casing are run with the
pin up, using left-hand threads, which require extra
attention during the makeup and running process.
Lift nubbins are used to carefully pick up the joints
with single-joint and side-door elevators.
Because some expandable casing connections include
D-ring seals, a precise torque-turn system, such as
the Baker Hughes Salvo™ graphical analysis system is
recommended to detect any anomalies during makeup.

The Baker Hughes DopeMaster™ application system may
be useful in precisely and consistently applying thread
compound. Insufficient or excessive compound can
lead to a poor seal, inaccurate torque, incorrect preload
within the connection, or excessive hoop stresses that
affect integrity during expansion.

Hydraulic safety clamp and hand slips
In addition to providing experienced crews and
tools for casing running operations, Baker Hughes
offers well and field solutions from a wide variety
of complementary product lines. As an integrated
service company, Baker Hughes can offer trained
personnel who understand all the technologies you
need to efficiently construct, complete and produce
your well. For example, our cementing experts have
record-setting experience providing technology and
services to isolate expandable casing, even in harsh
environments and extended-reach wells, for the life
of your well. In addition, Baker Hughes offers LinExx
expandable casing systems for many applications.
