INDUSTRY NEWS ENVENTUREGT SET TO BRINI BREAKTHROUGHTECHNOLO( ..DOWNUNDER'' THE world's leading specinlist in Solid Expandable Tabular (SEf) solutions, Enventure Globol Technology, hus opened an office in Australia as part of e continuing global expansi.on. During a recent visit to Australia, Enventure GT's presidentand ceo,Bob Hinkel, told Oil & GasAustralia that the new Perth office will be a key componentof the company's significant move into the AustralAsian region. The company has named Andrew Sutherland to head up the local operation and he will be responsible for marketing Enventure GT in Australia, New Zealand and PapuaNew Guinea. As well as reporting to Enventure GT's head offrce in Houston, Mr Sutherland will also have close links with the company's other operationsin Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), Jakarta(Indonesia)and Beijing (China) in this region. Launched in 1998, Enventure GT was created by Halliburton Energy Services and Shell Technology Ventures as a vehicle to further the exciting breakthroughs they had made in SET technology. Those developments began in the early 1990s when Royal Dutch Shell began investigating the possibility of expanding solid oilfield tubulars downhole. The original concepttest was performed in The Hague, but the pipe was constructedof steelsimilar to that Page 10, Oil & 6as Austrolia,November2004 used in the crumple zone of an automobile, and the joints of the pipe were welded together. At the end of 1997, Shell Technology VenturesInc. and Halliburton Energy Services began exploring the possibility of forming a new limited liability company whose initial focus would be the developmentand commercialisation of expandabletubular technology. The new company would be funded and managed equally by the two partners. As work progressed toward forming the joint venture, proof-of-concept tests performed at Halliburton's Houston Technology Centre in September 1998 demonstratedthe feasibility of expanding oilfield country tubulars. Enventure Global Technology was born in December1998. Technology development continued throughout early 1999, with key milestones being achievedin March of that year: . surface expansion of over 600 feet of 3 Il2-rnclt coiled tubing; and . full-scale rig tests of the 13 3/8-inch by 16-inch openhole system. In May 1999, Enventure introduced three product lines at the Offshore Technology Conference in Houston - the Enventure OpenholeLiner (OHL) System;the Enventure Cased-Hole Liner (CHL) System; and the VersaFlex Expandable Liner Hanger (ELH) System. In late November 1999, Enventure GT successfully and safely installed the first OHL in Chevron's OCSG-1351#23 well located in West Cameron 17 Field, Block 48, just outside of Louisiana State waters in . the. Gulf of Mexico. Expandable tubular systems had become a commercial reality. Enventure GT ceo,Bob Hinkel. Since that time, SET systems have been installed in both openhole and cased-hole wellbores in a variety of environmentson land and offshore in deepwaterand ultra-deepwater globally. As of October 2004, Enventure has completed over 272 installations and has expandedmore than 86 km for 63 customers in 20 countries. The company has undertaken work for some of the biggest names in the oil and gas sector, including Shell, ChevronTexaco. Uncical, Sinopec, Conoco Phillips, Talisman and Peffonas. While it has been contractedby Australia's BHP Billiton and Santos for international work, Enventure GT has yet to perform its unique servicesin Australia - something that Continued on opposite page AndrewSutherlondis heodingup Enventure GlobalTechnology's operotions in Austrolio. EnventureGT's SET Technologyminimises .ieep drilling issues such as telescoping r borehole tapering before reaching the 3eologicalobjective. Additionally, SET Solutions can mitigate \evere lost circulation, addresschallenges to horehole stability and repair old casing strings hv increasing their burst strength. The technology may also revive plugged and abandoned wells. SET Technology minimises the loss of inside casing diameter, making the technology applicable as a contingency casing, drill liner or cased-hole liner in workover or completion operations. The innovative, cost-reducing technology can be used for: well slimming; remedial operations; window exit applications; and horizontal well applications. TI{E FUTURE Aside from its recent significant global expansion, Enventure GT has also continued to make further breakthroughs in SET technology. One of these developments is its patented MonoDiameter application. While planned. SET Systems reduce the telescoping effect in traditional well design, the MonoDiameter System will eliminate telescoping altogether, slimming down the top of the well while increasing well diameter at TD. The MonoDiameter System exhibits the ultimate in diametric efficiencies - a constant ID from the top of the well to TD. The MonoDiameter Process over-expands the junctions of the nested expanded casing liners, resulting in a single-diameter wellbore. Nesting sequentially installed expandable casing strings can decreasethe reduction of a typical hole size by 50 per cent and enable drilling to continue as deep as necessaryto reach the payzone. The MonoDiameter application is a feature of a recently signed agreementbetween Norsk Hydro and Enventure GT that incorporates SET technology into the Norsk Hydro's Tekno 2005 programme to develop new reserves and reduce development costs in its Norwegian offshore fields. "This agreernent provides a unique opportunify for a MonoDiameter application," said Mr Hinkel. "Norsk Hydro recognised MonoDiameter technology as a viable means in which to accessreseryes cost effectively by capitalising on structures and facilities that are already in place." The cooperative effort between Hydro and Enventure GT consists of the fust field application of the MonoDiarneter System in combination with Hydro's multi-well, extended-reachfield development scenario. These installations will be fit-for-purpose applications to maximise recovery of reserves at distancesexceeding 10 km from the drilling structures. One potential candidate is the Ormen Lange field. Production from this field is expected to supply the UK with 20 per cent of its total sas demandbv 2007.l
