| bakerhughes.com CASE HISTORY RockView Thru Service Improved Petrophysical Analysis and Reserve Estimate Accuracy Location: Kentucky, North America Results ■ Delivered through-casing formation lithology and mineralogy data ■ Improved porosity analysis by identifying dolomitization in carbonate reservoirs ■ Reduced deployment risks Challenge ■ Cased wellbores restricted deployment of conventional openhole tools for formation evaluation ■ Required formation lithology and mineralogy data through the casing ■ Minimize HS&E risks associated with radioactive-source deployments The RockView Thru service analysis matched the XRD and XRF analysis of the conventional cores that were obtained from an offset openhole well. A major North American exploration company required detailed formation lithology and mineralogy data to better understand the reservoir and improve the existing petrophysical analysis. Since the casing was already installed, additional openhole data and conventional cores could not be obtained without undertaking costly casing removal. The operator needed to understand if dolomitization had occurred in the carbonate reservoir in order to improve the porosity analysis. indicated an increase of siliciclastic influx above the main reservoir and clearly identified a coal seam in the formation. The mineralogy information from the log helped generate a representative formation matrix model that improved the porosity analysis. Operational expense was significantly reduced by acquiring detailed formation mineralogy data through the casing, which eliminated the need to pull out the casing. Through-casing acquisition also reduced HS&E risks associated with the deployment of wireline logging tools in an openhole environment. The RockView Thru service uses a non-chemical, pulsed-neutron source that eliminates hazards associated with handling and deploying radioactive-source-bearing tools. deployed the RockView™ Thru Baker Hughes cased-hole formation evaluation service on wireline to deliver detailed formation lithology and mineralogy data through the casing. The results from the logged interval provided an accurate chemical and mineral characterization of the formation. Analysis by the service matched the x-ray diffraction (XRD) and x-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis of the conventional cores that were acquired from an offset openhole well. The RockView Thru service made it possible to acquire critical formation evaluation data through the casing without additional risks. The detailed mineralogy and improved porosity analysis enabled the operator to better characterize the formation and more accurately estimate the reserves. The resulting log showed increased dolomitization near the upper section of the reservoir.
