When a major Gulf of Mexico deepwater operator
wanted to maximize casing depth by eliminating as
much rat hole as possible in an exploratory well,
Baker Hughes initiated a one-run solution by
integrating its GaugePro Echo™ on-command
digital reamer with StaySharp™ cutter technology
with the its AutoTrak™ G3 rotary steerable drilling
system (RSS).
The AutoTrak G3 RSS and GaugePro Echo reamer
worked seamlessly with a sophisticated Baker
Hughes logging-while-drilling (LWD) assembly
capable of measuring formation pressures in
real time.
The LWD assembly included the TesTrak™
formation pressure-while-drilling service, which
provides downhole formation pressure and
mobility data.
Using the TesTrak service’s SmartPad™ closedloop sealing and SmarTest™ intelligent testing
systems, the operator was able to accurately
measure formation pressures in real time to
maintain pressure balance and prevent a kick.
The assembly also included the ZoneTrak™ G
near-bit gamma ray LWD service, which detected
geological targets earlier while drilling.

CASE HISTORY
The TesTrak service’s SmarTest intelligent testing system helped measure formation pressures in real time to maintain pressure balance
and prevent a kick.
The LithoTrak™ advanced LWD porosity service delivered
reliable neutron porosity and formation density logs at rapid
sampling rates, while the SoundTrak™ acoustic LWD service
employed proprietary acoustic technology to provide direct shear
slowness measurements.
This service integration provided the operator with the
technologies needed—such as the GaugePro Echo reamer
and the TesTrak service—to characterize formation pressure
gradients in real time while safely maintaining circulation on
the well.
While equivalent circulating density (ECD) was still within
acceptable limits, the operator maximized casing depth by
activating the GaugePro Echo reamer to 14¾ in. via downlink.
As a result, Baker Hughes helped the operator achieve its
objectives at a much lower cost, saving an estimated 32 hours
of rig time and USD 1.6 million.
