07 08 ® REPORT 2007-2008 Annual Report | Big Brothers Big Sisters of Pinellas County, Inc. serving Pinellas, Hernando & Citrus Counties Changing Perspectives, Changing Lives: The story of a former Little Brother Chris Gattas loves sailing. He has the boat, the skills and the vision to prove it. In fact, he loves it so much that aside from running his own screen printing and embroidery business with his wife of 25 years and raising their 18 year old son, there isn’t really anything else in this 44-year-old Pinellas County native’s life that doesn’t revolve around sailing…and he owes it all to his Big Brother, Larry Marechal. Chris’s parents divorced when he was very young, leaving his mother to raise him and his sister. “I saw my father on occasion,” Chris said. “But my mother knew I needed a more consistent male figure in my life, especially as I was nearing my teenage years.” After a phone call to Big Brothers Big Sisters, 12-year-old Chris got matched with his new Big Brother, Larry. Larry was a 23-year-old single guy who worked for a sail making company. His passion was all things sailing. He lived in a house on the water where he had several boats that he continuously worked and sailed on. After getting matched with Chris, Larry saw the tremendous opportunity and challenge of introducing him to sailing. “I never participated in any kind of sports or recreational activity as a kid due to my struggles with obesity and asthma,” said Chris. “Likewise, I didn’t have many friends because I couldn’t partake in any of the typical activities all the boys my age did, like football and soccer.” As Larry and Chris built their friendship, it became clear that sailing helped Chris in many aspects of his life. “I was able to participate in an outdoor activity that was fun and interesting and eventually I became enthralled with it,” said Chris. “I even made some new friends with the kids that Larry taught sailing classes to, which was easy since we shared a common interest that we could build friendships upon.” Chris’s self-esteem came a long way as well. “Living with my mom and sister didn’t exactly give me an outlet to talk about guy stuff,” said Chris. “Larry was there when I needed to talk about things that I couldn’t with my mom – like girls. Larry knew all the right things to say and really helped me build my confidence.” After being matched for about four years, Larry moved to California. As Chris entered into high school, he used those four years of friendship with his Big Brother to guide him. Chris continued to focus on getting physically fit, kept sailing and even pursued a love interest. Cont’d p.2 Chris Gattas, former Little Brother 2007-2008 Annual Report | Big Brothers Big Sisters of Pinellas County, Inc. serving Pinellas, Hernando & Citrus Counties a message from leadership In light of the turbulent challenges our country has faced over the past year, we are encouraged by the successes our agency experienced through our service to children throughout Pinellas, Hernando and Citrus Counties. Our most triumphant efforts came through the launch of our Sports Buddies initiative, where 114 boys came off our waiting list because of the men in our community who enthusiastically stepped up to become Bigs. Sports Buddies brought Big Brothers and Little Brothers together through the common interest of sports and recreational activities, and enabled them to build a friendship on the principles of good sportsmanship, goal-setting, character and integrity. Today, more than 90% of those matches are still together. We are deeply grateful for the generous partnerships with theTampa Bay Rays, Mike Alstott Family Foundation, Tampa Bay Lightning and Tampa Bay Storm, whose commitment, leadership and endorsement of Sports Buddies contributed to its success. Additionally, we celebrate our efforts of serving 1,531 children with a Big Brother, Big Sister or Big Couple in 2008 and thank our dedicated volunteers for their commitments to our youth. In these uncertain economic times, children are especially vulnerable and we see firsthand the need for Big Brothers Big Sisters. Frugality, creativity, resourcefulness and leverage are all hallmarks of our way of working. Our agency has moved to the forefront of nonprofits with accountability and performance metrics that stand behind our work. That positioning along with a respected board of Directors and a spirited and tenacious executive team and staff will sustain us through this tumultuous economic climate. Our vision was crystallized through six months of strategic planning for 2009-2011, as we focus on three key areas: 1) Improve measurable outcomes for children being served, 2) ensure long-term sustainability of the agency through aggressive resource acquisition and allocation and 3) ensure long-term agency success through optimal acquisition, development and organization of board and staff. The nonprofit sector is not immune to the recession plaguing our country, therefore, just as everyone else, we too had to adjust to stay ahead of the curve by sharpening our focus, honing our disciplined approach and differentiating ourselves as the relevant and urgent social service that we are. We are working hard to stay the course and remain committed to serving the children and families who need us most with the quality one-to-one mentoring relationships that have a measurable impact. As a donor-supported organization, we thank those who support the important work we do of changing perspective and changing lives. Lisa Letizio Board President 2 Susan Rolston Chief Executive Officer “I used my new-found confidence to ask out a girl I liked,” Chris said. That girl was Tracie, his high school sweetheart, who he is still married to today. Chris believes those few years as a Little Brother made a profound impact on his life. “So many of my decisions and passions in life I owe to Larry’s influence,” said Chris. “The obvious one is sailing. I earned my captain’s license a few years ago and have a beautiful 34 foot Hunter that my wife and I take out each week.” Chris also serves the community through his love of sailing. “I am the immediate past president of the Dunedin Kiwanis Club and chair their annual regatta each year, which benefits the Dunedin Youth Sailing Association.” Chris has plans to become Chris sailing in the sunset from Larry’s backyard further involved in helping kids through sailing. “I recently purchased the plans from the original designer of the Optimist dinghy [a small, single-crew sailing boat used by children],” said Chris. “I am excited to begin building them so they can be used at the new sailing center that’s in the works to be built for the Dunedin Youth Sailing Association.” Chris also takes time to play tennis. For the past couple years, he has participated in the Frenchy’s Gumbo Tennis Classic that benefits Big Brothers Big Sisters. It was during play in last year’s tournament that he began to think of Larry. “I decided to use the internet to try and find him,” Chris said. “We kept in touch for about a year after he moved to California at the end of our match and I was curious to know what he was up to these days.” It didn’t take long for Chris to see his Big Brother’s face again…on a website for Larry’s vacation home rentals in Sonoma, CA. Chris immediately sent him an email and the two have been writing back and forth for a few months now. “It was so great to find him and catch up on each other’s lives,” Chris said. “In fact, my wife and I are planning a trip out to Sonoma next year to visit Larry and his family. We are so excited.” Chris is just one of many adults whose lives were changed for the better because of the encouragement and guidance they received from a caring mentor. Larry helped Chris develop a positive perspective on serving the community, pursuing a passion and working hard to achieve a goal. “After my son goes to college, I am thinking of becoming a Big Brother,” said Chris. “I know what a difference it made in my life and I would love the opportunity to do the same for someone else.” 2007-2008 Annual Report | Big Brothers Big Sisters of Pinellas County, Inc. serving Pinellas, Hernando & Citrus Counties program outcomes Our Bigs and Littles spend time building their friendships in our community-based and school-based programs. Communitybased matches have more flexibility when it comes to going out and about, experiencing the activities and happenings the community has to offer, while school-based matches are required to stay on the school site when visiting together. The purpose of a Big Brothers Big Sisters relationship in either 1,531 692 program is the same - to help a child realize their potential and guide them on a path toward a successful adulthood. Our Bigs are key in encouraging their Littles to do well in school, changing their perspectives to give them hope for a successful future and being there as a trusted mentor and friend during their Little's most formative years. We are pleased to report on the exceptional outcomes of our programs in 2008: children served with a Big Brother, Big Sister, or Big Couple 98% of these children were promoted to the next grade level, thanks to the support and encouragement they received from their Bigs to do well in school. Ours Bigs also lead our Littles to make the right choices. We are proud to report that 90% of the children matched in our programs for at least year with a Big have had no involvement with the Dept. of Juvenile Justice. families served through Kinship Services Network, our collaborative program with the Children’s Home and Catholic Charities that offers specialized support for relative caregivers. 96% of the primary youth we served continued to reside with the same kinship family following case closure at 3, 6, & 12 month intervals. 99% of the youth we served through Kinship Services Network did not enter the foster care system nor had an institutional placement. 104 kinship children are also matched with a Big Brother, Big Sister or Big Couple. 114 children matched with a Big Brother as a result of the Sports Buddies campaign. Sports Buddies launched in late 2007 for the purpose of attracting male volunteers for the many boys on the waiting list. These new relationships have been built on a common interest in sports and recreation and allow more opportunity for learning character, goal-setting skills and good sportsmanship. Of all the matches made through Sports Buddies, more than 90% are still together today. Learn more about Sports Buddies at www.bigsportsbuddies.org. The Power of One Company The Tampa Bay Rays are a powerful company that uses its strength to improve the lives of children throughout the Tampa Bay area. Since 2007, the Rays and Big Brothers Big Sisters have met to craft an allencompassing annual partnership that includes all seven ways a company can be involved. The past year’s partnership was a mutually beneficial one that really made a difference: Leadership: Michael Kalt, Senior Vice President of Business Affairs for the Rays, serves on our Board of Directors. Volunteer Recruitment: Rays’ first baseman, Carlos Peña, became the spokesperson for the agency’s Sports Buddies initiative to encourage more men to volunteer. Within seven months, his appearance in a local television commercial inspired more than 200 men throughout Tampa Bay to sign up as Big Brothers. they’ve provided valuable memorabilia for silent auctions and allowed our agency use of the ballpark for match activities. Bowl for Kids’ Sake: In addition to a generous company sponsorship, Rays’ employees also form teams, hold fundraising campaigns and bowl for the benefit of our kids. Publicity: The Rays have given publicity to Big Brothers Big Sisters through live radio broadcasts, Big Brothers Big Sisters nights at the ballpark, public service announcements during games, information booths in the stadium, and press releases. School-based Mentoring: At the start of the 2008 school year, the Rays entered into a school-based partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters and Campbell Park Elementary. Several Rays employees spend one hour a week at the site to mentor a Little Brother or Little Sister. In-kind Investments: The Rays have donated a significant amount of home game tickets, allowing Bigs and Littles the chance to experience a professional baseball game. Additionally, Financial Contributions: The Rays have given generous monetary support through event sponsorships and live on-air auctions. In 2008, the Rays Foundation awarded Big Brothers Big Sisters $100,000 ($50,000 for our agency and $50,000 for BBBS of Tampa Bay) through their All-Star Grant program, for support of Sports Buddies initiatives. We are overwhelmed with gratitude for the tremendous leadership the Rays have taken to support our kids. We look forward to an exciting year ahead! 3 2007-2008 Annual Report | Big Brothers Big Sisters of Pinellas County, Inc. serving Pinellas, Hernando & Citrus Counties statement of finances 2007-2008 Revenue and Expense Report (10/1/2007 - 9/30/2008) TOTAL REVENUE $2,680,210 TOTAL EXPENSES $2,754,523 Florida Dept. of Education Fundraising/Special Events Juvenile Welfare Board United Way Other Foundations & Grants Other Public Support Other Income $191,541 $1,267,628 $ 818,282 $ 168,439 $ 174,772 $ 59,014 $ 534 Program Services Supporting Services Fundraising/Special Events $ 2,231,164 $ 236,316 $ 287,043 support from donors * Due to the transition to a new fiscal year that aligns with a calendar year, this list represents all donations made from 10/1/07 - 12/31/08.
