The Fourth of July was a great day. I had the opportunity to
attend a Fourth of July parade, enjoy a Fourth of July fireworks
display, and also learned some little-known facts about the
Declaration of Independence . . .
1) Benjamin Franklin wrote the first declaration of
independence.
In April 1775, the Revolutionary War began at Lexington
and Concord. Only July 5, 1975 – an entire year before the
adoption of the Declaration of Independence – the Continental
Congress adopted the Olive Branch Petition, written by John
Dickinson, which appealed directly to British King George III for
reconciliation between the Colonies and Great Britain. Though
Franklin signed the petition for the sake of consensus, he radically
differed with it and said that stronger sentiments were necessary
because the petition was destined to be rejected.
He was so appalled by British atrocities and exhausted of British
rule that he planned the first articles of confederation and drafted a
declaration of independence to be issued by none other than Gen.
George Washington. So strong was the language of the draft that
Thomas Jefferson wrote that though some members of Congress
– including him – “approved highly of it”, some were “revolted at
it.” Jefferson explained in his private commentary that “proposing
it to Congress as the subject for any vote whatever would startle
many members.”
It seems Congress just wasn’t ready to throw down the gauntlet
yet. My, how things can change in a year!
2) Jefferson had problems with the adopted version of the
Declaration of Independence, which was written primarily by
him.
On June 11, 1776, the Second Continental Congress appointed
a committee of five men (Franklin, Jefferson, John Adams,
Robert Livingston and Roger Sherman) to write a declaration of
independence. The committee, in turn, appointed Jefferson to
produce a first draft for consideration, which he did by utilizing
other documents, such as his own draft of a Virginia constitution, the
Virginia Declaration of Rights and state appeals for independence. The committee and, later, Congress made some revisions to
Jefferson’s draft before formally adopting it July 4, 1776. In the
end, Jefferson was troubled by their revisions, especially Franklin
and Adams’ removal of a diatribe blaming King George III for the
trans-Atlantic slave trade.
Who knows? Maybe if that paragraph were left in the document,
our Founding Fathers might not be maligned so much for being
pro-slavery.
3) The Declaration of Independence wasn’t signed July 4,
1776.
On July 1, 1776, the Second Continental Congress began
meeting in Philadelphia, at what is now known as Independence
Hall. Delegates spent the next few days debating and revising
the Committee of Five’s draft. After adopting the Declaration of
Independence on July 4, they didn’t sign it for roughly another
month because New York’s delegates weren’t authorized to vote in
favor of independence until July 9, and it also took two additional
weeks for the declaration to be produced in its final printed form. Most delegates signed the official declaration August 2, but at
least six others didn’t sign it until later, and two more (Dickinson
and Livingston) never signed it at all.
4) The original Declaration of Independence wasn’t written on
paper.
As the National Archives and Records Administration explains,
the original was “engrossed on parchment which is an animal skin
specially treated with lime and stretched to create a strong, longlasting writing support. The printed version is on paper and was
read aloud from town squares throughout the colonies, so that
those who could not read would receive the news about intended separation from England.”

I love history, especially when it pertains to our great country.

At a Fourth of July celebration Thursday, a few friends and myself were talking about how few
World War II veterans were left. I have great respect and much admiration for our WWII veterans
. . . my father was one of them.
The following story was sent to me awhile back and I thought this was a perfect time to share it.
Even though it was written about World War I, it reminds me of some of our local WWII veterans .
..
He was very old now, but he could still hold himself stiffly to attention before the monument. His
war, the one to end all wars, now just a fading part of history. Very few could remember firsthand the
savageness of the ordeal that sent millions of young men to their deaths.
“Cannon fodder” they’d call them, sent before the guns to be mowed down and blown apart by
chunks of metal that had decimated their frail bodies. The cream of a generation, almost wiped out.
He was haunted by the faces of the boys he’d had to order into battle, the ones who’d never come
back. Yet one nameless ghost was able to bring a measure of comfort to his uneasy mind. At the sound
of the gun signaling the eleventh hour, he was mentally transported back to the fields of Flanders.
The battle had raged for over two hours, with neither side gaining any advantage. Wave after
wave of soldiers had been dispatched from the muddy trenches and sent over the top. So many had
died already that day that he decided he couldn’t afford to lose any more men before reinforcements
arrived. Perhaps they’d give the remnants a few more days of life. There came a slight lull in the
battle, due to the sheer exhaustion of men on both sides. It was always the same.
There existed an unspoken agreement between the warring armies that they all be allowed some
respite before continuing with the next onslaught. Time to catch one’s breath, until it was taken away
forever. During this interval, a young soldier came up to him requesting he be allowed to go over the
top. He looked at the boy who couldn’t have been more than nineteen. Was this extreme bravery in
the face of the enemy, or was the soldier so scared he just needed to get it over with?
“Why would you want to throw your life away, soldier? It’s almost certain death to go out there.”
“My best friend went out over an hour ago, Captain, and he hasn’t come back. He could be lying
out there hurt. I must find him, sir.” The pleading look in the young man’s eyes touched him. But to
let him go now would be to condemn him to death.
“I’m sorry, son, but I can’t let you go out there. It would be suicidal. Forcefully he said, “Go back
to your post, soldier. That’s an order.” The young man turned, his head hung low, and slowly made
his way back.
The battle resumed its full fury, the guns pounding and acrid smoke stealing the little bit of fresh air
that was left. Deafening explosions and showers of muddy earth hid the sight and sound of screaming
men and horses.
It was nearly two hours before the next pause in the conflict. The captain rolled a cigarette between
shaking fingers. The smoke could not even curl up to penetrate the foul air. As he looked through the
haze that surrounded him, he saw a figure approaching. It was the young soldier. He’d come back
again.
“Captain, please, please let me go out onto the battlefield,” he begged. “I know my friend must be
hurt and calling for me. I must go to him, sir. I must.” There were tears in his eyes. It was as if this
were the most important thing in the world to him.
“Soldier, I’m sorry, but your friend is probably dead. What purpose would it serve to let you
sacrifice your life, too?”
“At least I’d know I’d tried, sir. He’d do the same thing in my shoes. I know he would.”
He was about to order the boy back to the ranks again, but the impact of his words softened his heart. He remembered the awful pain he’d felt himself when his brother had died and he’d never had the
chance to say good-bye.
“All right, soldier, you can go.” Despite all the horror around them, he saw a radiant smile on the
boy’s face. It was as if a great weight had been lifted from his shoulders.
“Thank you, sir,” said the soldier. As he watched him slip away, he heard him shout out: “God bless
you, sir.”
It was a long time before the guns fell silent, and each side was allowed to gather their
dead and wounded. The captain remembered the young soldier. He had to know what had become of
him. He looked through the piles of bodies. There were so many. Perhaps he should check the living,
just in case.
When he came to the makeshift hospital, he looked carefully through the casualties. With a shock,
he soon found himself before the prone body of the soldier. He was alive, but mortally wounded. He
knelt down beside the young man and gently laid a hand on his shoulder.
“I’m so sorry. I knew I was wrong to let you go.”
“Oh, no, sir. I’m glad you did, and I’m glad you are here now so I can thank you. You see, sir, I
found my friend. He was badly wounded, but I was able to comfort him at the end. As I held him
dying in my arms, he looked me in the eyes and said, ‘I knew you’d come.” The young soldier gave
one last gasp and slipped quietly into oblivion.
***
As the bugle sounded “Taps”, the old captain, tears streaming down his face, envisioned once again
the smiling face and hear the words, “God bless you, sir.” Looking up, he could almost hear the stone
monument calling out to him: “I knew you’d come.”

OKLAHOMA HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS ATTEND OKLAHOMA GIRLS STATE. High
school senior girls from Coal County joined 416 young women from across the state selected to attend the 72nd annual session of Oklahoma Girls State, hosted at the University
of Oklahoma from May 26th through June 1st. Sponsored and directed by the American
Legion Auxiliary, Oklahoma Girls State offers young women the opportunity to participate
in citizenship training designed to emulate Oklahoma’s government. It offers educational
programs of government instruction for delegates by immersing them in the operations of
local, county and state government. Throughout the week, the delegates campaign and
elect government officials, including a governor and lieutenant governor, and participate
in mock legislative sessions and court proceedings. During the week, Gov. Mary Fallin,
Lt. Gov. Todd Lamb, former Lt. Gov. Jari Askins, and many other leaders from Oklahoma
government addressed the delegates. Pictured from left to right are Irene Clingenpeel,

This fall, the libraries of the
Southeastern Public Library
System of Oklahoma will take part
in the Big Read, a program of the
National Endowment for the Arts,
designed to revitalize the role of
literature in American culture.
All 15 libraries will host
community
events,
book
discussions, contests, parades and
educational programs related to
the book “True Grit” by Charles
Portis. Among the many scheduled
activities are a “True Grits” cooking
contest and the publication of a
“Crookbook” filled with recipes
fit for an outlaw campfire, a chuck
wagon feed or just an outdoor
family dinner.
“We
will
publish
our
‘Crookbook,’ filled with recipes
suited for outdoor cooking, early
this fall,” said SEPLSO Director
Wayne Hanway. “Librarians at all
SEPLSO libraries are now seeking
submissions for this one-of-a-kind
collection of outdoor recipes.”
Forms for submitting recipes are
available at the Coal County Public
Library, 115 West Ohio, Coalgate. Deadline for submissions is July
31.
Completed forms may be
submitted to any SEPLSO library
or mailed to: Crookbook Recipes,
SEPLSO, 401 N. 2nd, McAlester,
OK 74501.
Copies of the “Crookbook”
will be available for purchase for
a nominal fee at Big Read events
beginning Saturday, October 5,
and continuing through November
16.
As readers throughout the area
become acquainted with the “True
Grit” story through lectures, book
discussions, movie screenings
and special events, they will be
encouraged to read more for
pleasure and enlightenment.
Action in this modern American
classic takes place throughout the
Southeastern Oklahoma area—
from the Oklahoma-Arkansas
border at Fort Smith, to the J.J.
McAlester Mercantile Company, to
the famed Robbers Cave hideouts
in the San Bois Mountains near
Wilburton.
The story follows the adventures
of young Mattie Ross and U.S.
Marshal Rooster Cogburn as they
seek murderer Tom Chaney, who is
riding with the Ned Pepper outlaw
gang.
“So this summer, we urge
everyone in Southeastern Oklahoma
to submit a favorite outdoor or
Dutch Oven-style recipe,” said
Hanway. “You might not be a crook
like Ned Pepper or Belle Starr, but
your Pepper Steak might become a
star, and you’ll help support the Big
Read program at the same time.”
The Big Read is a program of the
National Endowment for the Arts
in partnership with Arts Midwest. SEPLSO is a multi-county public
library district serving the residents
of Choctaw, Coal, Haskell,

CASA Seeks Volunteers
Give A Child A Voice!
If you’ve ever wanted to
make a difference in a child’s
life, now is the time. Each day
in Oklahoma, a child is taken
out of their home, their school
and away from their siblings. These children are taken because they have suffered physical or emotional abuse and neglect or sometimes even death
at the hands of their parents,
stepparents or other caregivers
in these children’s life. These
children are faced with many
obstacles and most times do
not understand why or what is
happening to them. Sometimes
these children get kicked to the
side or lost in the system while
their parents are being investigated for abuse, or waiting for
them to work a treatment plan,
these children sit in shelters or
foster homes with strangers,
feeling scared and alone. This
is where YOU come in; CASA
volunteer helps the child understand what is happening and
stays with the case until the safest home is found.
CASA means Court Appointed Special advocate- trained
community volunteers appointed by a judge to speak up for
abused and neglected children
in court. Volunteers receive
30 hours of training in social
work and legal basics. CASA
training enables the volunteer
to learn about courtroom pro-
cedures, social services and the
juvenile system. A CASA will
research the background of the
case by reviewing documents
and interviewing everyone involved, including the child. A
CASA provides the judge with
information that will help the
judge make informed decisions
for the child. A CASA volunteer is instrumental in assuring
that a child is receiving services, which the court has ordered. A CASA volunteer is assigned
to know the child, one child at a
time, to understand the boundaries of their life, to consider
their hopes and dreams to try to
come to some conclusion about
what will be in the child’s best
interest.
In Atoka & Coal County
we now have 27 cases serving 51 children with very few
volunteers; CASA is asking the
community to take a stand and
get involved for these abused
and neglected children, it only
takes a few hours of your time
a month to make a life time of
difference in a child’s future. So please take a few minutes
to come by the office located
in Atoka County courthouse or
phone 889-5860; in Coal County we are located in the Big
Five Office or phone 927-2381;
pick up an application and get
started on giving an abused
child another chance in life for
a brighter, healthier, happier
and safer future.

Coalgate Independence Day Fun for All
Coalgate was the place to be
for a fun-filled Independence
Day 2013. Even the weather
cooperated by staying in the 80s
and low 90s – quite a contrast to
the 100-plus temperatures Coal
County normally has on July 4.
The day began with the
recently re-organized Oklahoma
Territorial Gunslingers making
their return debut after being
inactive for the past several
years. True to form, the
Gunslingers captured the
attention of hundreds of people
who lined up on Main Street to
watch their skits and gun safety
presentation. The group is made
up of several of the original
members as well as a couple of
rookies – and they’re as good as
ever!
People from all over the
county participated in the
parade emceed by Coal County
Commissioner Johnny D. Ward
and K101 Radio personality
Chris Bradley. Oklahoma state
Sen. Josh Brecheen and Rep.

One Pharmacist’s View...by Wayne Bullard, Pharm D
Digging ‘taters on Goat Ridge
Summertime is special. For
kids It’s time for vacations, trips,
camp-outs and doing things—
school is out and it’s time for
swimming and free time—a
time to make memories. I’ve had some pretty special
summers when I was a kid—
but the summer of 1943 was a
pretty memorable one for me
and my brother Gerald. I’ve
mentioned before how that my
brother Gerald and I were often
banished to my grandparents
down on Goat Ridge in Leflore
County every summer. Dad
said we were to help him on
the farm. Gerald felt they were
just trying to get rid of us in that
early summer of 1943. And I
remember it very well.
We were raised by a man
(our dad) who owned a movie
theatre—thus we learned
to make sense of things by
relating things to movie plots. For instance our arrival on J.
T. Bullard’s farm that summer
caused Gerald (in later years) to
compare our visit to the events
in the movie “Bridge on the
River Kwai,” starring William
Holden and Alec Guinness. In
the movie the slave driving POW
Jap camp commander literally
works the Allied POWs nearly
to death building this bridge the
Japs need to win the war. In
our situation, we arrived just in
time to “help” dig potatoes. He
had what seemed like thousands
of acres of potatoes which were
ready for harvest and he took
his obedient mule and plowed
them up but not perfectly. You
still had to grunge around for
them. In Gerald’s view grandpa
was the Jap Commandant. We
were the allied POWs. In our
roles we carried large buckets
and dug out the potatoes. When
our bucket was full we struggled
to the nearby wagon to unload.
We finally got the potatoes
dug. It took about 6 days. My
Uncle Jack was home for his
last summer before graduating
from Fanshaw School the next
spring and going off to war. Things improved drastically
after that with daily trips to
the “Bluff Hole’ a clear water
perfect swimming place. One
day melted into another and
time passed. Another casualty
of the war was up on the ridge,
too. My Aunt Inez and her little
3 year old girl Gail were there. Her husband, my Uncle Tracy,
was already gone to the Army
and they were another pair of
disgruntled ridge dwellers. There was no running water or
electric up there but we didn’t
mind. In the evenings the
family gathered on the long
front porch. Jack would get his
guitar out and Inez liked to sort
of coordinate things. We would
sing songs like “You Are my
Sunshine,” and such as that. Gerald was worried. He
confided his fears that we might
be stuck there—forever. “We
came down here on one way
bus tickets” he reminded me.
I spoke with Grandma of my
concerns and she said she was
sure that we would be going
home soon and not to worry. “You’ll understand all this
in the sweet by and by,” she
said. Then I heard a familiar
and welcome noise. It was the
rattles of my dad’s old 1935
Ford. He was coming to get us
and he did. He also had news. Gerald and I had a new sister. Linda Kay had been born on
July 3 and I suppose she wasn’t
as big a surprise to my mom as
she was to me. When Inez let
me know that she knew, I asked
her how. “I just know,” she
said.
We went home to Centrahoma
that day and met the prettiest
little girl baby I had ever seen. Linda grew up and became a
beautiful woman and remained
a very pretty lady all her life. But that dread disease cancer
took her from us about 2 years
ago. Now when her birthday
rolls around every July 3rd I miss
her a little more as I think of
that day on that front porch 70
years ago down on my beloved
Goat Ridge. It tempers us to
remember that life comes to us
with a mixture.
Have a good week and be
sure and go to church Sunday.

A Coal County inmate DIRT crew picks up trash on a county road.
Sheriff Launches Fulltime
Inmate DIRT Program
Coal County Sheriff Bryan
Jump’s inmate work program is
now an official fulltime program
aimed at cleaning up roadways
and other public areas. Even though the sheriff
has been taking inmates out
to perform cleanup tasks
practically since he took office,
the program now has an official
name. Jump’s DIRT (Daily Inmate
Roadside Task) Program was
launched July 1 after the Board
of County Commissioners voted
June 17 to fund the program on
a one-year trial basis out of the
county’s solid waste account.
Roger Cunningham, a CLEET
certified officer, was hired
to oversee the program. The
overall cost of the program is
about $2,800 a month, Jump
said.
The work crew generally
consists of two to eight inmates
that clean up trash, mow, weed
eat, and cut and chip brush on
roadways and other public
property — “Anything that is
on county, state or city rights of
way or public property,” Jump
said. “Their job will be to
help keep the county clean and
looking good.” Typically, the
crew works eight hours a day,
five days a week.
“We don’t take any violent
offenders, sex offenders, or
high risk offenders out, and the
workers are easily identified
by florescent-colored vests and
orange shirts or pants.
“I feel like it’s a good
program. It’s on a year trial, and
if it’s successful, I see no reason
why it won’t be continued. It’s
funded out of solid waste, and
any grants that we can obtain
will be added.
“I would encourage the
public to let us know about any
roadside dumps or trashy areas
or areas where road signs are not
visible because of high weeds. We’ll be glad to come out and
take care of the problem.”
Jump said he is happy to get
support for his DIRT Program. “I
want to thank the commissioners

for their willingness to help. This program is something I’ve
been pursuing since I’ve been in
office — it was just a matter of
finding a way to get it done.
“The public seems to like it,
and the inmates like it. They’re
happy to get out and work
instead of laying around all the
time.”
In addition to the DIRT
Program, Coal County inmates
have been maintaining their
own vegetable garden that they
planted in the spring. Letter to
the Editor
I had the opportunity to take
a couple from California to the
cemetery to show them where
their grandparents were buried. They couldn’t believe that a
country cemetery would look so
nice.
They stated the cemetery was
in better shape than some of
the perpetual care cemetery in
California.
All of the good comments were
because of the new cemetery
boards and volunteers hard work
in at the cemetery. A special
thanks to the Hatton family for
donating the mowing and weed
eating at the cemetery.
The cemetery is in the best
shape I have ever seen it. I
believe more flowers were put
out this year than ever before.
I wish everyone would visit
the cemetery to see it even if
you don’t have any relatives
buried there.
Personally I felt at peace just
being at the cemetery with out
some one being there acting like
you might steal a tombstone or
something.
I know my Grandfather
who donated the land for the
cemetery would approve of the
way the new board is managing
it.

Watch Elderly For Dehydration
Dehydration means excessive
loss of water from the body or
from an organ or bodily part.
This brings me to a very
important point. Now that it is
July and our temperatures are
already in the 90’s, we need to
be very mindful of our elderly
living in nursing homes and in
their own homes. It doesn’t
take very long for our body
to become dehydrated from
heat and the lack of necessary
fluids.
Please encourage our elderly
to consume more liquids in this
warmer weather. (Make sure
that they are not on a restricted
fluid intake, before doing so.) Beverages need to be easily
accessible for them. Residents
that suffer from Alzheimer’s,
dementia, incontinence, or
residents that have colds or
the flu are at greater risk for
dehydration. So those elders
that cannot or don’t think by
themselves, please offer them a

Other causes of dehydration
can be fluid loss due to an illness,
(diarrhea, fever, infections),
side effects of medications,
(diuretics). So please help
promote adequate hydration to
our elders, so they may have a
happy and safe summer.

Old Business:
Ward asked the sheriff if he has received a response from the letter mailed to the State Jail Inspector regarding the
staffing deficiencies of the current jail. He said he has spoken with them, and they seem to be lenient as long as the county is
showing it is taking the necessary steps to correct the deficiencies.
New Business:
Allen Leaird said he met with State Secretary of Agriculture about the property in Tupelo that has been discussed in
previous meetings. He said he was told by the liaison for the Governorʼs office that the Governor should sign off in order the push
the project through for a business incubator. He said he would like to see the Board to approve to use the property for agricultural
purposes as best as it sees fit. He said the property is approximately 6.5 aces with a nice building. Leaird said he would prepare a
letter for the Governor to approve for the project.
Johnny Ward said Judge Inge called him Friday about closing the courthouse both Thursday and Friday due to the
holiday. He added that Atoka has already approved the closing. No officer present was opposed to the closing. Ward asked that it
be advertised in the newspaper and signs be posted at the courthouse.
Allen Leaird added that he would be willing to help with any correspondence or paperwork regarding the jail.
Michael Hensley made a motion to adjourn at 10:43a.m.

Texas Woman Arrested
for Attempting to Pass
Counterfeit Money
A 33-year-old Euless, Texas,
woman was arrested July 3 after
attempting to buy 4th of July
fireworks at a Masonic Lodge
fireworks stand with counterfeit
money. The fireworks stand was
set up at the American Legion
post.
Investigator Jarel Bailey said
Mason Scott Wright notified the
sheriff’s office at 8:20 p.m. July
2 that a woman had attempted
to pay for the fireworks with a
counterfeit $100 bill. Deputy JoshVincent responded
to the call. At that time, Wright
told Vincent that the woman got
$106 dollars worth of fireworks
and attempted to pay for them
with two $100 bills, one of which
Wright immediately recognized
as counterfeit. Wright said when
he confronted the woman about
the money being counterfeit, she
drove away from the stand after
she ripped the counterfeit bill in
half and left it at the fireworks
stand. Wright had gotten her tag
number, and the Atoka Police
Department stopped the vehicle. She was arrested for driving
without a license and transported
to the Atoka County jail. Wright identified the woman as
the same woman that attempted
to pass the counterfeit money. David Cathey, an investigator
with the District Attorney’s
office, attempted to interview
the woman on July 3, but the
woman refused to speak with
Cathey, according to Bailey’s
probable cause affidavit.
Amanda Marie White appeared
in court in Coal County on July
8 for her initial arraignment, at
which time the court entered a
plea of not guilty on her behalf
to the felony charge of uttering a
forged instrument. Bond was set
at $7,000, which White posted
on Tuesday. She is scheduled for
an August 8 preliminary hearing
conference. If convicted, she
faces a prison sentence up to
seven years.
Ada Man Charged with
Animal Cruelty
An Ada man was charged
Monday with cruelty to animals
after allegedly shooting and
killing an 8-month-old Boxer in
Centrahoma.
Investigator Jarel Bailey’s
probable cause affidavit states
that the owner of the Boxer said
the dog had been missing several
days and he had been told that
Christian Harold Sherwood, 18,
had shot the dog. Bailey said when he spoke
with a relative of Sherwood,
the relative stated that Daffern
had told him he shot the dog for
tearing up the trash. The relative
said the dog was stinking, so he
moved it with his tractor.
Sherwood was located at a
relative’s home in Coalgate. During an interview, Sherwood
first stated that he saw the
dog sniffing the trash near the
roadway and shot him with
a .22 rifle. Bailey said when
Sherwood was confronted with
the eyewitness account, he
admitted that he had never seen
the dog before and that he was
an “innocent” dog. He said the
dog was standing in the roadway
when he shot it for no reason,
according to Bailey’s affidavit.
A warrant has been issued for
Sherwood’s arrest.

JEREMIAH WEEDEN AND HIS FIRST SET OF WHEELS — Jeremiah Weeden of Coalgate
received a very special birthday gift this year — his first car! Jeremiah celebrated his 18th birthday
on June 8, but he received the classic all-original 1976 Ford LTD Landau in April as an early
birthday present. Jeremiah and his Ford have spent so much time together since April that
Jeremiah decided the car needed a name. So…the Ford is now known as Larry. Larry may have
a few years on Jeremiah, but with only 39,612 original miles, he and his owner undoubtedly will
be friends for many more years. Belated happy 18th birthday wishes, Jeremiah!
