The event netted Habitat over $15,000.00. Thank you to all that attended, donated, sponsored and volunteered. There were nine restaurants competing for the bragging rights of top taste. The nine competitors were: Casa Nueva, Fluff Bakery presenting Rickshaw Thai, Kiser’s Barbeque, Cutler’s Restaurant, Lui Lui’s, Sol, The Inn at Cedar Falls, Rocky Boot Grill, and the Athens Country Club. All brought their top game and wowed the crowd with amazing dishes from a duck breast flatbread to tofu albondigas. It was a foodies paradise. Third place with Tam Som, a spicy green papaya salad with lime, hot chili, fish sauce, palm sugar; and Tom Kha Gai, a chicken, As the tasting came to coconut milk soup with an end people voted for kaffir lime leaves, galangal, and lemon grass was their favorite dishes. Ed Folk pictured here with his daughter Jennifer has worked tirelessly for her dream of homeownership. He has volunteered over 200 hours. He has also been a teacher to many on the build site. Thank you Ed for all of your hard work! The house at 2 Alexander Street is almost complete. Thank you to WRTR, and all of our female volunteers! Hammer & Nail Newsletter SPRING 2013 Page 3 Collegiate Challenge Comes to Athens Athens County Habitat for Humanity had two different Collegiate Challenge groups come to Athens this March. One was from Providence College and the other from the University of Virginia. Both groups helped move and organize the ReStore to its new location. They also helped with the current build taking place at 2 Alexander Street in Athens. Making these trips successful took a lot of help from our Faith Build Coalition volunteers. Thank you to First Christian Church for housing the Habitat volunteers. Thank you to the Athens Community Center for letting the students shower at their facility. Thank you to Danny Moates for organizing breakfast and dinner for the college students. Thank you to the following churches for providing wonderful dinners our Habitat volunteers: Athens Catholic Parish, First Lutheran Church, First Presbyterian Church and Grace Christian Center. WRTR Flower Sale & Golf Outing The Women Raise the Roof flower sale has commenced. This is a great fundraiser because you get great deals on flowers and Habitat gets a percentage of the profits. You can pick up order forms at the Habitat Office and the ReStore located on Union Street. Orders need to be re- ceived by Anita James by April 27, 2013. All flower orders should be picked up on Sunday, May 5 between 11am and 3pm at the Junior Fair Building at the Athens County Fairgrounds. Women Raise the Roof has a goal of 125 orders this spring, please order today! The Women Raise the Roof Habitat for Humanity Collation will be hosting the tenth annual golf scramble on June 1, 2013. The event will begin with a 9am shotgun start at the Ohio University golf course. There will be food, beverages, prizes and a silent auction. The cost is $240.00 per a team or $60.00 per an individual, please register before May 17th, 2013. You can send fees and names of golfers to Peggy Pruitt at 6933 Gura Road, Athens, Ohio 45701. Faith Build’s Scrap Metal Drive The Faith Build coalition will be hosting a Scrap Metal Drive on Saturday, June 1st from 9am to 1pm at the Athens County Fairgrounds. The fairgrounds are located on West Union Street in Athens. All scrap metal will be welcomed along with car batteries. This event along with the Rummage Sale, and 2x4 signings help the Faith Build Coalition fund their next building project. This winter the Faith Build coalition hit another house sponsorship and is looking to get a head start on the next Habitat House. Cash donations will be welcomed at both of these events. Clean out your garage or closet and help raise money for Habitat for Humanity. Spotlight on Volunteers Janey Copeland is a regular volunteer at the ReStore. She loves to volunteer with Habitat because she gets to talk to people about their home projects and their home repair needs. She likes it when customers come back and share what they have created with the staff and volunteers at the ReStore. Thank you Janey for all of you hard work! Hammer & Nail Newsletter Page 4 Meet the new Habitat Staff Athens County Habitat for Humanity has several new faces working in the office, build site and ReStore. In the office the affiliate has hired Tiffany Tomeo, our new Volunteer and Youth Engagement Director. She is in charge of volunteer recruitment, engagement, and retention. She has been vital this last month during as the Habitat affiliate merges and expands our service area. Though not a new face Steven Peters has a new title, the former site supervisor is now Athens County Habitat for Humanity Parttime Construction Supervisor. He will continue to be on the build site working with homeowners and volunteers to build safe, affordable homes. He will also be in the office order construction supplies and organizing build day task lists. At the new ReStore we have two new employees, Michael Vaughn and Kiara Otlowski. Both are part-time ReStore associates. Michael along with Dave Stafford, a volunteer, works on Tuesdays doing donations pick-ups.
