The South Campus of the Karel de Grote University College (KdG)
is rising out of the ground on the site of the former Biscuiterie Parein
biscuit factory opposite the Palace of Justice in Antwerp. The
campus needs to accommodate 5,500 students and 500 employees
starting from academic year 2016-2017.
The main parts of the factory building have been retained and put to
new use as office, teaching or training space. Parts of the building
on the Troonplaats and Brusselstraat are being demolished and
replaced by new ones. As well as classrooms, the project includes a
library, offices, a bookstore, underground bicycle parking for 1,560
bikes and 111 car parking spaces. A central courtyard will provide
light and air at the heart of the campus. Around the square will come
a central reception area, a spacious cafeteria, a learning centre, a
wide range of multi-purpose classrooms and training rooms and
several auditoria.
Campus Zuid will be a sustainable, energy and environmentallyconscious building. The building itself is being fitted out for flexible
use of space, the outside walls are being insulated and green roofs
laid. The technical installations are designed on energy-saving
principles (minimum CO2 emissions, maximum energy savings and
use of renewable energy sources as far as possible). The project
will be BREEAM 'Excellent' labelled.
The South Campus will house training in nursing, pedagogy and
education. The building will also be home to the central college
services and student facilities (KdG Stuvo).
