Expansion and renovation of Wijnegem Shopping Centre in 3
phases.
Phase 1: Expansion of Fnac and relocation of Lunch Garden
(11/2011 - 05/2012) € 1,400,000
Phase 2: Expansion work and renovation: Sarma part and
renovation of ‘Mall’ (02/2012 - 09/2013) € 31,000,000
Phase 3: Renovation of shopping centre (05/2012 - 11/2013)
€ 11,000,000.
The shopping centre remained open during the entire renovation
process.
The familiar 'landmarks' of the Wijnegem Shopping Center –
including the main entrance, the main hallway, and the clock – all
underwent an "extreme makeover". A new logo is also part of the
restyling. Above entrance 6 hangs one of the striking new sail
structures.
The central hall was converted into a forum with an eye-catching
open wooden construction. This forum is designed as a theatre for
concerts, lectures, fashion shows and exhibitions, and includes the
new information desk.
New seating zones are provided around the new clock in the 'Clock
Court', with an interactive floor that can create spectacular effects.
The shopping centre includes a number of new and particularly

beautiful fountains.
All the seating was replaced during the renovation. New seating
elements have been introduced with a neat integrated system for
separate waste collection. New carpeted seating zones have been
provided to guarantee more rest. All metal railings were removed
and replaced with carefully finished glass balustrades.
The lighting system throughout the shopping centre now consists
mainly of LEDs, substantially reducing energy consumption and also
requiring much less maintenance than conventional halogen or neon
lighting. Calm colours, shapes and materials, lots of light and space,
adequate rest areas and beautiful green plants create a pleasant
and relaxed atmosphere.
The former supermarket has made way for a new building. This has
involved some retailers moving out temporarily. Outside of these
retailers, who have received new permanent premises in the new
building, a number of new shops and 200 additional parking spaces
have been added. These parking spaces make good those lost by
the renovation works elsewhere.
The car park exit was removed to allow visitors coming by tram or
bus traffic to walk freely and safely to and from the shopping centre.
In the car park near entrance 6 are charging stations for electric
bicycles and electric cars.
Entrance 5 has been moved. Here, along with additional
landscaping, new parking spaces have been built for disabled
persons.
