About Jiggers
(Tunga penetrans, chigger, jigger, chigoe, bicho do pé or sand flea.)
yy It is a small pin head sized flea found in sandy terrain of warm, dry climates.
yy It prefers deserts, beaches, stables, stack farms, and the soils and dusts in and
around farms.
yy It hides in the crevices and hairy cracks found on the floors, walls of dwellings and
items like furniture.
yy It feeds on their warm blooded hosts including man, cats, dogs, rats, pigs, cattle and
sheep.

How it causes disease
yy The impregnated female flea feeds by burrowing into the skin of the host skin under the
toe or fingernails resulting into a sore.
yy It enlarges and forms a round sack full of eggs with the shape and size of a pea (about
1cm in diameter).
yy It releases the eggs to the ground then it dies and is slowly sloughed from the host’s skin.
yy It the causes secondary infection or lead to infection, inflammation, ulceration, fibrosis,
lymphangitis, gangrene, loss of toenail, auto-amputation of the digits and death.
yy Extraction with dirty pin or needle leaves a tiny pit in the skin which may develop into a
sore.

Where jiggers attack
yy Hands
yy Feet
yy Knees
yy Private parts
yy Buttocks
Symptoms
yy An infestation begins to irritate and itch when is
almost fully developed.
yy Sometimes it causes severe inflammation and
ulceration.
yy If the female jigger dies in the skin, it may cause
a secondary infection which if ignored could lead
to tetanus, gangrene and even loss of a toe.
yy Natural extrusion of the eggs sac or removal of
the jigger with a dirty pin or needle leaves a tiny
pit in the skin, which may develop into a sore.
yy The sore may extend and develop into a septic
ulcer. An infection under a toenail may cause pus
to form.

Treatment
yy Wash affected areas with clean water and soap (if available).
yy Dry the cleaned areas.
yy Soak affected area in a Potassium permanganate or
disinfectant like Savlon solution for 15 minutes.
yy Apply petroleum jelly or oil to soften the skin.
yy Repeat the above procedure three times a day for two
weeks.
Effects of Jigger infestation:
yy High School dropout and poor performance
yy Unable to excericise democratic rights, eg. voting
yy Inability to walk easily due to pain in the affected areas of the legs
yy Inability to carry out normal day to day activities like working or playing
yy Stigmatisation
yy Low self esteem resulting from the stigmatisation
yy Infections such as HIV/Aids are passed from person to person due to sharing of
pins and needles while removing jiggers
yy Disability as people with severe infestation
are unable to walk or use their hands
yy Death

Preventative Measures
yy Jiggers victims’ homes should be thoroughly fumigated.
yy Animals that may be carrying the fleas should also be treated.
yy Victims and their families should also be educated on hygiene.
yy Wearing shoes
yy Vulnerable people should check their feet daily for freshly burrowing
jiggers which are visible as small black spots which cause an itchy
sensation.
yy Insect repelant applied to the skin-although
walking barefoot in dirt quickly removes the
repellant.
yy Locating the jiggers’ hiding place and burning or
spraying the said area with an insecticide would
also help kill the jiggers.
