THE UNIVERSITY DOES ART
Truth in advertising department: Obviously, something in
my earlier career in the academy grounds my admiration
for university faculty who lead productive double lives as
practicing artists and dedicated classroom professionals.
The Professoriate exhibit showcases both of those lives in
ways that serve to validate whatever bias I may have.
For one thing, university art faculty are held (and hold
themselves) to the highest possible standard in both aspects
of their work. As creators of original art, they work at the
cutting edge of technical and formal production. Their
employers and their own inner criteria demand it. And in
the classroom, it is their privilege and obligation to nurture
other, usually younger artists: to recognize their unique
gifts and aspirations, and to guide them in their development.
Northwest Ohio is rich in university resources. The I-75
corridor and its environs are home to a large number of
those resources. And ArtSpace is pleased to gather together 17 faculty members from their respective departments of art for an exhibit which showcases their latest
work. As well, upstairs in ArtZone, we have put together a
representative sample of works by their current and recent
students. What better way to celebrate the dual achievements of these artist/teachers?
As you see from this Guide, the works assembled demonstrate a wide variety of techniques and subject matters -these artists’ responses to the creative urge in all of us, but
especially urg-ent in them. There are oils, ceramics, photographs, watercolors, lithographs, archival digital prints -all chosen by their creators to represent their most considered responses to the world around them. And let me stress
“urgent” and “considered” -- on the face of it, an unlikely
pair of descriptors. But there is no paradox: the urgency
comes from the artist’s soul and heart; the consideration
from the brain and biography. Together, they make up the
grounds of motive and execution.
We at ArtSpace hope you enjoy and profit from Professoriate, that it offers you a fresh perspective of what is possible
in the visual arts and a renewed appreciation of the wealth
of talent on our doorstep in Northwest Ohio.
