Introduction
IT environments are increasingly complex and, therefore, finding one product to monitor the entire physical and
virtual environment is challenging.
There is no single product that can accomplish this out of the box. MonitorIT has been designed to come close to
being a complete solution upon installation with customization that is easy--no command line or programming-and flexible such that the technology will work well with other solutions by either collecting data from multiple
monitoring solutions, or sending information to other enterprise management systems or portals. Finally,
MonitorIT works with virtually every ticketing system.

I.
End-to-End Performance Monitoring and Reporting
MonitorIT is a comprehensive monitoring solution providing end-to-end visibility into your entire physical
and virtual infrastructure. MonitorIT exploits the GAP that exists between high-cost enterprise solutions
and inexpensive utilities by offering a comprehensive set of features that allow the user to monitor virtual
servers, physical servers, VDI, network devices, desktops, databases and applications from a single view at
a cost just above freeware.
 No programming necessary to customize monitoring rules. Monitoring out of the box for the entire
infrastructure.

II. Virtual Environment Monitoring
Goliath Technologies offers an approach to monitoring virtual environments that is different from any
other solution in the marketplace. Our combination of Agent-Based and Agentless technology eliminates
false positives and blind spots, providing complete visibility from the host all the way down to the
application level.
Shown below are the three different options customers have to monitor a VMware or Citrix XenServer
environment.



Agentless Monitoring using our API integration to the hypervisor, collecting information on the host,
VMs, and Storage
Agent-Based Monitoring using our lightweight, low-resource Intelligent Agents to monitor application
level detail. Our Intelligent Agents also provide the ability to take action and automatically remediate
when performance degradation occurs.
Both Agentless and Agent Based for complete visibility.
While we do offer agentless monitoring of virtual machines, we believe this method alone creates risk due
to the inherent limitation of the hypervisors themselves. Simply, hypervisors only capture limited metrics.
While this approach gives you a good, high-level view from the host perspective, it doesn’t show the
details of what’s happening at the guest level. For example, the four VMs below are being agentlessly
monitored using the hypervisor API’s. They seem to be operating okay, with plenty of resources in terms
of Memory, CPU, and Disk.

However, when “Intelligent Agents” are deployed, the administrator has increased visibility to see that
applications running on the guests are actually down. If agents had been deployed, the system
administrator would have been able to detect this and even automate fix actions so that an actual failure
might have been prevented.
So, we hear from our users that, with MonitorIT, you are eliminating any false positives or blind spots
by deploying our agentless solution along with our Intelligent Agents.

The Intelligent Agent provides the following benefits when monitoring applications on virtual machines:





Leverage MIT Intelligent Agent to capture additional application level data.
Troubleshoot and auto-resolve the application issue by restarting the processes and services.
Automatically sense changes to windows platforms or applications and collect all performance
counter data for trending, setting thresholds and alerting.
Automatically monitor and alert for application resource starvation to meet your SLAs.
Flexible and extendable monitoring of any application that has a process or generates log files.
Remote Site Monitoring Without Deploying a Physical Server or Proxy
Any Intelligent Agent can be deployed on a Virtual Server and is equipped with “Master Agent” capabilities.
The “Master Agent” is a subset of functionality that allows any single agent deployed at a remote site to be
tasked with capturing SNMP Traps and Syslog messages from any such enabled device in your environment as
well as the hypervisors. If an alerting condition is triggered, the “master agent” will then send alerts to the
MonitorIT server. This is incredibly helpful as it provides a facility to deploy an agent at a remote site behind a
firewall to monitor network devices, physical servers or hosts while negating the requirement to deploy a
monitoring server to each location.

III. Virtual Desktop Infrastructure Monitoring
Managing VDI and Application Delivery presents new challenges to administrators due to the complexity
of the solution. Unlike other products, VDI and Application Delivery solutions such as Citrix XenDesktop,
Citrix XenApp and VMware View simultaneously impact your virtual infrastructure, network, storage and
supporting infrastructure.
As a result, administrators face challenges in:
 determining the root cause of problems that impact the experience of users
 quickly remediating to ensure the users are able to return to productivity
 providing objective evidence as to what may have caused the problem
 automating fix actions based on predetermined thresholds
Because VDI solutions run on resources that are often managed by different departments with different
tools, it can be extremely challenging to objectively analyze performance, which is often best
accomplished from a single unified dashboard.
XenDesktop
In a XenDesktop deployment, MonitorIT has the ability to monitor critical XenDesktop components as well
as the surrounding infrastructure, shown below.
Because of MonitorIT’s integration into specific components and flexibility in monitoring the surrounding
infrastructure, we can capture the following information from the various components in a VDI
deployment.

XenApp - Co-existence with EdgeSight
In a XenApp deployment, MonitorIT has the ability to monitor critical XenApp components including a coexistence with EdgeSight to capture critical end user experience data. In addition, we also monitor the
surrounding infrastructure, shown below.
As with XenDesktop, with MonitorIT’s integration into specific components and flexibility in monitoring
the surrounding infrastructure, we can capture the following information from the various components in
a XenApp deployment.

MonitorIT’s approach to monitoring XenDesktop and XenApp Environments is to provide the
administrator visibility into and control over all the infrastructure elements that contribute to the
effective delivery of applications to the end user.

MONITOR ANY CUSTOM OR 3RD PARTY APPLICATION by creating custom monitoring rules without the
need of command line or programming knowledge. MonitorIT has the ability to monitor each functional
component of ANY APPLICATION such as processes, supporting services, config files, registry entries,
application log events, and more.

V. Physical Server Monitoring
While the industry continues to move toward virtualization, our position at Goliath is to provide solutions
that offer the flexibility of being deployed in hybrid physical and virtual environments. MonitorIT’s
Intelligent Agent can be deployed on any Windows, Linux, or UNIX physical or virtual server, and provides
deep monitoring capabilities to enable administrators to clearly track actions taking place in their
environment. MonitorIT supports all versions of Windows, as well as all major distributions of Linux and
UNIX.
VI. Network Monitoring
MonitorIT provides proactive monitoring for all network and infrastructure devices such as switches,
routers, and firewalls. MonitorIT enables network engineers to monitor device status and connectivity,
bandwidth, latency and more, to enable them to troubleshoot problems as they arise.
We license our network monitoring PER DEVICE, not per port or per element. At $75 per device, you can
monitor a 24-port switch or a 128-port switch for the same cost – as there’s no escalation in price or up
charge for the number of elements you want to monitor on any given device.
