WELCOME The British & Irish Film Season (BIFS) continues to evolve: both 2013 and 2014 saw increases in attendance of circa 60%. This year we are planning even higher and have included more films and are welcoming more Special Guests to share their experiences with the festival and the cinema-going public. With the continued support of the Edinburgh International Film Festival and the Galway Film Fleadh, we have been able to preview many new independent film productions from Ireland, England, Scotland, Wales and the Isle of Man, and include them in this year’s programme. In addition, we are delighted to include two films from last year’s festivals which are only now available to us: Shooting for Socrates about the Northern Ireland football team qualifying for the World Cup in Mexico in 1986, and Set Fire to the Stars, a drama in B&W following Welsh poet Dylan Thomas on a literary tour of the US. Both were mentioned in last year’s programme and will have been well worth the wait! This year’s line-up features films addressing ecological issues – Scottish Mussel – as well as philanthropy and peace - Andrew Carnegie; Rags to Riches, Power to Peace – both with powerful underlying messages. And then there are the other two documentaries, Generate the State which tells the astonishing story of Ireland investing in a substantial project on sustainable energy back in the 1920s, and the humility of A Doctor’s Sword – both screened in a Documentary Double Bill. At different ends of the spectrum there are comedies including Man Up, Absolutely Anything, Black Mountain Poets and You’re Ugly Too, and serious dramas including 45 Years starring Charlotte Rampling, Daniel Bruhl in The Face of an Angel, and Pursuit with Brendan Gleeson, continuing the literary trait from above with a contemporary take on the Irish legend of Diarmuid and Grainne. Two of this year’s films go further afield, both pushing the boundaries, with Strangerland set in Australia featuring the disappearance of two children and starring Nicole Kidman, and An Klondike, an Irish-language western. With Colin Farrell in The Lobster and a new star continually on the rise, Jack Reynor, in A Royal Night Out, there are plenty of top box office draws too! And this year we are including two Luxembourg co-productions, an animated film for the first time, a Luxembourg co-production, Two by Two (Ooops Noah is Gone!) to encourage younger children and families to attend, and Standby, a comedy drama set in Dublin. Actors featuring in more than one film in this year’s BIFS line-up include Kate Beckinsale, Barry Ward and Simon Pegg, allowing the audiences see them in multiple scenarios… All in all, this year’s line-up allows us to view the most recent film releases from Ireland, England, Scotland, Wales and the Isle of Man, with settings from Dublin, London, Glasgow and mountains in Wales, to Australia and Canada… I do hope you share my enthusiasm and excitement at this year’s BIFS line-up and look forward to seeing you at one or more of the screenings and participate in the Q&A sessions! Enjoy! Geoff THOMSPON – Organiser of the British & Irish Film Season, for G-Media sarl. www.BIFILMSEASON.lu 3 PROGRAMMES Educational Outreach Programme Following the success of the Young Journalist Competition held in both 2013 and 2014, this will be held again this year. In addition, two films are included in this year’s programme with a particular eye on younger audiences. Firstly, the animated adventure Two by Two (Ooops Noah is Gone!) is fun for all ages and is being screened early on a Sunday afternoon. Secondly, Shooting for Socrates is the film reserved for the Closing Screening – set amid The Troubles this powerful drama follows the fortunes of the Northern Ireland football team as they qualify for, and ultimately play at, the World Cup in Mexico in 1986, a story of unity. Shooting Stars Programme The BIFS screens films from predominately independent productions companies. While many feature established cast and crew, some films see actors in the first roles, or directors, screenwriters or even producers in these roles for the first time (including student films), taking their first steps in their film careers – these we call Shooting Stars. This year we will see young Lauren Kinsella in You’re Ugly Too, as well as Talulah Riley behind the camera for the first time in Scottish Mussel – audiences will know her from acting in films such as Pride & Prejudice, Inception, The Boat That Rocked and St Trinian’s 2. Shorts Programme Last year’s BIFS screening shorts before many of the feature films proved to be a real hit with Luxembourg audiences, so we have compiled a new catalogue of short films for this year. This gives BIFS audiences an opportunity to see short films without attending a special shorts screening and also gives many, normally young, film makers with another outlet for their craft. Documentary Day BIFS 2015 includes no less than three documentaries, with two from Ireland being screened together in a Documentary Double Bill. With a combined length of 120 minutes, the duration is similar to that of many features nowadays. Apart from their individual storylines, Generate the State and A Doctor’s Sword reveal deeper issues about society, with the first concerning the foresight for a substantial investment in a sustainable energy plant in the 1920s, and the second concerning humanity through the horror of WWII. www.BIFILMSEASON.lu 4 ISL`s IB Film, Communication and Media Classes salutes British & Irish Film Season Watch out ISL`s OUTSTANDING EDUCATION IB Film, Communication and Media classes started in 2000 at ISL with 11 students. In 2015 100 students enrolled. www.islux.lu YOUNG JOURNALIST COMPETITION Following the great success of the Young Journalist Competition at BIFS 2013 and BIFS 2014, the initiative is being continued this year. This is a fantastic opportunity for English language students to apply classroom theory in a practical and fun way, while at the same time enjoying the best of British & Irish cinema. Any student of English may enter and there will be a number of prizes for different categories. Participants may write and submit a review of any film screened during the BIFS 2015 programme up to and including Tuesday 29 September 2015. Reviews should be 400 maximum in length and be on one A4 sheet, in either MS Word or PDF format. Participants can send their reviews to the BIFS team ([email protected]), clearly marked “BIFS Young Journalist Competition” by midnight on Tuesday 29 September, and including the entrant’s name, age, educational establishment, email address, mobile phone number and category (see list below). The winners will be invited to attend the Awards Ceremony prior to the Closing Screening on Friday 2 October 2015. Prize Categories (a) Secondary school pupils (English mother-tongue) (c) University students (Film Studies & English Literature) (b) Secondary school pupils (non-English mother-tongue) (d) Language school students Organised by www.BIFILMSEASON.lu 6 AUDIENCE AWARD Critics’ Award This year, BIFS will see a new award, the Critics’ Award, voted for by Luxembourg film critics, members of the Association Luxembourgeoise de la Presse Cinématographique (ALPC). All films in the programme, excluding that at the Closing Screening, will be eligible. Audience Award The Audience Award, as in previous years, is an opportunity for the cinema-going public to be directly involved in the event. As with the Critics’ Award, all films in the programme, excluding that at the Closing Screening, will be eligible. Those attending each screening may vote on that film, with the most popular (winning) film announced at the Closing Screening on Friday 2 October 2015. Audience Prize One of the voting slips used in the Audience Award above will be drawn after the penultimate screening, with the winner invited to attend the BIFS Awards held prior to the Closing Screening on 2 October, at which he/she will be presented with a Luxair voucher for 2 return flights to London/Dublin*. * If the winner is unable to attend the Awards and Closing Screening in person, another winner will be drawn. Social Media & Competition BIFS 2015 will be active throughout the festival on social media, specifically Facebook («British and Irish Film Season») and Twitter (@LuxBIFS, #LuxBIFS2015), so start liking, following, tweeting, tagging, sharing and more! This year we will be running a Photo Competition. All you have to do is post or tweet your photos from the film season with the hashtag #LuxBIFS2015. Professional or whacky, we want to to see them all! The best photo that sums up your BIFS 2015 experience wins tickets to the Closing Screening on 2 October! www.BIFILMSEASON.lu 7 www.BIFILMSEASON.lu 8 PEOPLE Special Guests One of the main reasons for the continued increase year-on-year of audience numbers in BIFS has been Special Guests (actors, directors, producers and script-writers) attending the screenings of their films and participating in post-screening Q&A sessions, some in person and some via Skype, both substantially increasing the audience’s cinematic experience. This year, BIFS 2015 will welcome a larger number of industry professionals in person / via Skype, with Special Guests participating almost daily. At the time of going to print, these are not yet all confirmed, but the organisers are expecting these to include the following films: A Doctor’s Sword; Almost Anything; An Klondike; Andrew Carnegie; Rags to Riches, Power to Peace; Black Mountain Poets; Generate the State, Pursuit; Scottish Mussel; Shooting for Socrates; Standby, Two by Two. Industry Masterclass / Workshop BIFS 2015 will see an Industry Masterclass in the form of a Writing Workshop on Wednesday 23 September. This event is open to those working in the film production industry in Luxembourg as well as members of the public attending that evening’s screening. In conjunction with Film Fund Luxembourg, this event will feature a panel of writers from different genres discussing their approaches to writing, creativity and what inspires them, as well as case studies. Volunteers The British & Irish Film Season 2015 would not be possible without the sterling work of a group of volunteers, both in the lead-up to, as well as throughout the festival itself. Anyone interested in volunteering at screenings should contact the organisers at [email protected] with “Volunteers” in the subject line. www.BIFILMSEASON.lu 9 SHORT Films Continuing on from 2014, the BIFS 2015 will include a number of short films to be screened prior to the main features. These will include, for example, The Weather Report by Paul Murphy and starring Edward MacLiam, and Bridge to Kindness starring Chloe Gibson. St George’s provides the learning environment and the opportunity for each student to achieve their own unique potential. www.st-georges.lu | +352 42 32 24 20150901.indd 1 01/09/2015 13:37:36 www.BIFILMSEASON.lu 10 We build partnerships based on high standards of individual service, not one-size-fits-all When it comes to Fixed Income investing, our focus is to ensure you achieve your objectives.
