Ship-shape at the 31st Michigan City In-Water Boat Show
By Charles McKelvy
The Great Lakes are indisputably the
best bodies of water upon which to ply a
watercraft, and the best possible place for
sailors of all types to find just the right
craft for cruising those sweet water seas
was the 31st Michigan City In-Water Boat
Show August 19-22.
There were fair winds and following
seas, and the tall ship Appledore IV from
Bay City, Michigan made a special stop
at the Boat Show before sailing off to the
Tall Ships Festival in Chicago.
It was in the words of Ken Alvey “the
largest in-water boat show on Lake Michigan.”
The weather was wonderful for this year’s In-Water Boat Show.
The 85-foot schooner sailed into Trail
Creek on the first day of the Boat Show
and was available for Lake Michigan
cruises throughout the three-day event.
Since 1989, the crew has used the schooner’s 3,500 square feet of sail primarily to
tour the Great Lakes. After doing its star
turn at the Michigan City show, the Appledore IV sailed across the lake to Chicago for the Tall Ships Festival there.
Tall ship Appledore IV made a
special stop at the Boat Show
before sailing to the Tall Ships
Festival in Chicago.
Alvey is President of the Lake Erie
Marine Trades Association (LEMTA),
which produces Michigan City’s annual opportunity to check out the new
models and acquire the latest accessories, gear and clothing for boating
on the big lake. He kindly took time
away from his dockside luncheon at
Giorgetti’s Restaurant and Pizzeria to
note that “people have come from hundreds of miles way to see boats, explore
the lifestyle of boating, and network
with fellow boaters, and this year we
were honored to have had had the Appledore IV out of Bay City, Michigan
dock with us.”
The Michigan City In-Water Boat show hosted a fleet of boats ranging from
small inflatable to powerboats, sailboats and even a tall ship from Bay City, Michigan.

And sailors, set your courses for Cedar Point in
Sandusky, Ohio where the North American In-Water Boat Show will grace the waters of Lake Erie
from September 15 to 19.
Fair winds and following seas!

Boat Show.
Alvey said patrons of this year’s Boat Show also
got to enjoy music, entertainment, and young visitors learned water and life jacket safety from Capt’n
Willie the Great Lakes Pirate who performed shows
daily.
“We had a great variety of food from the Michigan
City Exchange Club, and the boats were the centerpiece of the whole show. A 56-foot cruiser was the
largest boat in the show and we went all the way
down to an 8-foot dinghy,” Alvey said.
Some 200 boats in all were displayed with 50 vendors offering their marine wares for those, who according to Alvey, “have that land-water interchange
gene in their systems. If you want to be on the water or near the water, and if you’ve ever wanted to
learn more about boating, this was the place to be.”
And it certainly will be again in August 2011
when LEMTA produces the 32nd annual Michigan
City In-Water Boat Show.
Until then, those who attended this year’s show
will be doing sea trials on Lake Michigan and waterways between here and Florida in their new boats
and adapting new gear and equipment to their existing boats.
Seated at the “skipper’s table” were: (left to right) Show Founder and
President Emeritus of the Lake Erie Marine Trades Association (LEMTA)
Norm Schultz, Michigan City Major Chuck Oberlie, Chairman of the
Michigan City Port Authority Jim Jaksa, and LEMTA President Ken Alvey.
LEMTA produced the Boat Show.
This bewitching weathervane was for sale at the Boat Show.
There was something for every boater at the Boat Show.

MC JROTC Cadets Attend Camp
Major McGrath stands with the Michigan City JROTC cadets who
attended the Cadet Leadership Camp prior to them negotiating a high
rope obstacle. They are (l-r) Cody Burlingame, Charles Davis, Jake Neal,
Nate Nowak, Jake Neal, Jesse Gonsalez, and Eddie Loop.
Cadets from the Michigan City High School Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps
(MCJROTC) attended a Cadet Leadership Camp
from July 25-31 at the Ingersoll Scout Reservation
in London Mills, IL. Cadets participated in a number of activities ranging from marksmanship to wilderness survival to high rope obstacles. The objective of the camp was to provide confidence for the
cadets to return to their units and become the leadership cadre at their respective schools. In addition
to Michigan City, there were 8 other schools at the
camp from Chicago, Peoria, IL and Portage, IN.
“Our cadets really held their own compared with
the cadets from the other schools,” said Major Tom
McGrath, the Senior Marine Instructor at Michigan City High School. “They were prepared well
by our Marine Instructor, Sergeant Major Altizer.
They will now return to school and be the leadership foundation not only for our corps of cadets, but
for our high school.”
One of the highlights of the camp was a leadership reaction course, where the cadets were presented with a problem and providing a solution
which they had to implement. “This activity really
gave me confidence as a leader,” said Cadet Second
Lieutenant Nate Nowak.
Other cadets echoed how the camp provided them
with important leadership lessons. “You definitely
have to communicate well in order to accomplish a
mission,” said Cadet Gunnery Sergeant Eddie Loop.
Cadet Second Lieutenant Jake Neal added that a
leader “shouldn’t be afraid of taking advice from
someone junior to him in rank.” The camp emphasized taking charge and not worrying about mistakes. “No leader is infallible,” said Cadet Second
Lieutenant Charles Davis.
The camp concluded with a competition using the
skills taught during the week. “This really brought
all the cadets together as a team,” said Cadet Sec-
ond Lieutenant Cody Burlingame. The combined
team of Michigan City and Portage came in 3rd out
of the 9 schools. This team did not allow a cadet to
compete in more than one event, maximizing participation for all cadets.
“The entire camp was a great experience,” summarized Cadet Gunnery Sergeant Jesse Gonzalez.
The Marine Corps JROTC is an elective course
open to all students grades 9-12. It is a leadership
course, not a preparation for the military course,
where the skills a cadet learns are applicable to
any career, not just the military. There is no military obligation associated with the course. Cadets
are required to adhere to Marine Corps personal
appearance and conduct standards. In addition to
the course curriculum of general military subjects
and life skills, there is a drill team and an air rifle
team that competes against other JROTCs from

all services. The JROTC is very active in the community, providing cadets for parades, ceremonies,
and community service. Cadets who are interested
in the military may attain advanced promotion as
enlisted personnel or be awarded an ROTC scholarship if they qualify for an officer program.

World Film Series at Valparaiso U.
A critically-acclaimed Bollywood movie, an Austrian film that won the Cannes Film Festival’s top
prize and a Japanese romantic comedy are among
the movies to be featured during Valparaiso University’s World Cinema Series, a year-long celebration
of international film.
Valpo’s 2010-2011 World Cinema Series will feature six recent films in their original language with
English subtitles. Following each film, a Valpo faculty member with expertise in the country where
the movie was made will lead an audience discussion.
Films in this year’s festival are:
•Sept. 17 – “The White Ribbon” (Austria), discussion led by Timothy Malchow, associate professor of
German;
•Oct. 15 – “Train Man” (Japan), discussion led
by Fred Kavanagh, assistant professor of Japanese;
•Nov. 12 – “Before the Rains” (India), discussion
led by George Pati, assistant professor of theology;
•Jan. 21 – “The Class” (France), discussion led by
Randa Duvick, professor of French;
•Feb. 18 – “The Secret in their Eyes” (Argentina/
Spain), discussion led by Richard Stith, professor of
law;
•March 18 – “Balzac and the Little Chinese
Seamstress” (China), discussion led by Benjamin
Ridgway, assistant professor of Chinese.
Timothy Tomasik, an associate professor of
French, said the film series, now in its fifth year,
provides the campus and surrounding community
an opportunity to regularly see high quality foreign
movies.
“It can be tough for people to choose foreign films
because they aren’t sure what to expect,” Tomasik said. “Valpo’s World Cinema Series allows the
campus community and public a chance to see important films being made in other countries. That’s
really important as we become an increasingly interconnected world, and so the festival helps us fulfill our mission of increasing people’s understanding
of other cultures.”
Screenings will begin at 7 p.m. in Neils Science
Center (Room 234) on campus. Tickets are $6 per
film or $25 for admission to all six films, with refreshments served prior to each screening. Tickets
are on sale now at the Harre Union, by phoning
(219) 464-5415 or purchase at the door.
Tomasik said films in the series not only span the
globe, but include a variety of genres and directing
styles. The French film “The Class” is shot in a documentary style, while the Spanish/Argentine film
“The Secret in their Eyes” is a visually-rich crime
thriller.

Outsider Art, Inside And Out
by Barbara Stodola
OUTSIDER ART, INSIDE AND OUT
Harbert, Michigan
Labor Day weekend brings droves of outsider artists to the grounds of Judith Racht Gallery in Harbert, Michigan, this year for the ninth annual outsider art fair. They come from out-of-the-way places
like Corunna, Indiana, Copemish, Michigan, and
Lookout Mountain, Tennessee. They set up their
displays in a motley formation of old boards and
shelving, beneath a white-tented canopy. All day
Saturday and Sunday (10-5 EST), they are visited
by swarms of city-dwellers, searching for unique
items to enliven beach cottages and condos. (Admission $10., weekend pass $20.)
Outsider art is especially prized for its uniqueness of materials – sequined tapestries, bottle-cap
sculptures, tables made of pencils, amusing figures
assembled from discarded bits of coffee pots, alarm
clocks and broken armchairs. The clientele is not
much interested in arcane disputations over whether or not such items are art. Their freshness and wit
are usually enough to make the sale.
Judith Racht has expanded the scope of her art
fair to include antique dealers, artists billed as “visionaries,” and galleries specializing in folk art. The
show’s reputation has spread to many states and
now attracts exhibitors from as far away as Texas
and Florida. A newcomer this year is Ed Brownlee,
a ceramicist from Lebanon, Pennsylvania. Outsider
sculptors Paul Hart and Joel Pinkerton have been
coming for years.
For those who savor this type of event, it is a
weekend of fun, a time to wear your most outre outfit. On Friday evening, there is a preview party (6
–9, EST). Music is provided by Patent Medicine,
and Preserve the Dunes will host a cash bar, benefiting their cause. Seasons Harvest will have a food
tent, and the Preacher Man will offer barbequed
specialties. You enter the tent set-up through the
gallery, at the corner of Prairie Avenue and Red Arrow Hwy., Harbert, Michigan. An inside show also
has outsider art, this year featuring Lisa Brawn, a
Canadian printmaker.
Judith Racht (right) and her daughter Brienne Racht
are pictured at a previous show.
Deb Henderson ( Michigan City, IN) brings her favorite pet paintings.
A vast array of novelties are for sale at the Outsider Art Fair.
Part of the fun is figuring out what these little figures are made out of.

OUTSIDER ART, INSIDE
Chicago Cultural Center
The Reverend Howard Finster was not the only
artist from America’s deep South to claim divine
inspiration, but – as the current show of his work,
at the Chicago Cultural Center, indicates – he had
to be the most prolific. By the time of his death in
2001, this Baptist preacher and self-taught artist
had produced more than 46,000 works of art – in
a frenzied, evangelistic outpouring that averaged
three to five pieces a day.
“He worked around the clock,” Manhattan gallerist Phyllis Kind told The New York Times in 2007,
when the Rev. Finster’s Paradise Gardens, his cluttered homestead in Pennville, Georgia, opened as a
public museum.
The Rev. Finster’s
visions of extraterrestrial life
extended to “other
plants with other life
beyond all sins and
strife.”
His goal was the salvation of souls, and he believed the Lord was commanding him to reach a
larger audience through paintings and hand-lettered messages. Thus he created visions of the afterlife – heavenly skies populated by smiling, flatfooted angels and cloud-like bobbing heads – and
the alternative scenes of Hell, where scores of naked sinners catapult into the flames. In Hell, we are
warned, there are “no rest rooms, no cold cokes, no
pope.”
Angels and devils were among Finster’s favorite
motifs, along with fantastic four-legged critters and
a host of celebrities he admired – Abraham Lincoln,
Daniel Boone, Elvis Presley, Leanord da Vinci,
Outsider Art Continued on Page 24
Coca-Cola, his favorite
drink, also inspires rhetoric:
“Thousands of church folks
drink coca cola and drive
home safely.”
THE

welcoming you to a stratosphere of cartoonish characters in the clouds.
Outsider Art
Continued from Page 23
Dwight D. Isenhower, Henry Ford, and then, the
collectors who fancied his paintings. Several commissioned portraits hang in this exhibit, and many
pieces are loaned by private collectors.
For his paintings, Finster used tractor paint “because it would last for years.” His faces all share a
family resemblance, with almond-shaped eyes, rows
of lashes on the lower lids, sharply delineated noses, and broad lips. Besides the traditional portraits,
he did large wooden cut-out figures, which are wallmounted; layered plexiglass cabinets, backed by
mirrors; towers stacked like wedding cakes; and
paintings on glass jars, jugs, gourds, old clocks, and,
like other outsider art, on all types of found objects.
But what distinguishes Finster’s paintings, more
than his characteristic imagery and recycled materials, are the endless rows of messages, running
up and down and around the borders and across
the frames. His hand-lettered sermons are often
drawn from biblical verse, but embellished with his
own fundamentalist dictates: “People are crowded
in lines for many things. But few stand in line to
get eternal life.” “Life hereafter is the most presus
treasure…” “It is wise to be ready allways…” “Every
time I get straightened out there’s a bunch of devils
looking over my shoulder…”
Elvis Presley, one of the artist’s southern folk-heroes, is
drawn with almond-shaped eyes and a broad mouth.
Despite their sometimes-gloomy outlook, the Rev.
Finster’s art objects retain an overriding exuberance, and it is clear he had fun producing them. He
was a charismatic preacher, a showman, and one of
this show’s most engaging elements is the TV tape
of his 1983 appearance on the Johnny Carson show.
The Rev. Finster arrived in a well-tailored suit, he
played his banjo and sang a song he had composed,
he talked as fluently as the words that flowed off
his paintbrush, and he southern-charmed the audience. It rarely happened that one of his guests managed to upstage Johnny Carson, but by the time the
Rev. Finster departed, his TV host was speechless.
Finster’s appearance on the Johny Carson show was commemorated by
a painting, with a row of believers climbing heavenward.
A portrait of his daughter, Beverly, shares the canvas with
a hand-lettered quotation from Proverbs 31:13.
The exhibit at the Chicago Cultural Center
(old library building, Randolph St, and Michigan Ave.) runs thru September 26. It is on the
4th floor, reachable by elevator. Admission is
free.

What’s New? This year’s four-day steam and
power show will feature the Kiddieland Limited, a
popular bullet-nose steam engine that once carried
Chicagoland residents around Kiddieland in suburban Melrose Park. Now paired with Hesston’s own
Kiddieland Express (another engine from the same
park!) the Kiddieland Limited will double-head
Saturday through Monday – and pull guests over a
one-mile railway line (one of three separate lines at
Hesston).
What’s New? Did you know that Hesston boasts
one the nation’s few working, turn-of-the-century
saw mills with a 60” blade? Just in time for this
year’s annual show – and for the first time since
2006 – Hesston has a new, working boiler to power
this historical mill once again with its own steam
power.
If it steams . . . it will be running! Hesston will be
literally “fired up” to operate...
-its working 1929 narrow-gauge Shay logging locomotive
-a 101-year-old steam-powered light plant for the
LaPorte County (Ind.) courthouse
-the “Blue Goose” engine that once pulled visitors
around Chicago’s Brookfield Zoo.
-lots of early 1900s steam tractors and even a
steam-powered popcorn machine!
Hesston’s show will also feature rides in a unique

Documentary on Boat Race
“American Sailors” takes the viewer on board
and behind the scenes as four great skippers prepare and race their boats in the longest and oldest
freshwater race in the world. It’s the 2008 Chicago
to Mackinac Island race.
The documentary by Holland, MI filmmaker John
Grooters of Seaspray Productions will be shown at
7:30 p.m. MI time on Fri., Sept. 3 as part of the Box
Factory for the Arts’ First Friday Film series. Grooters plans to attend the screening. Admission for the
film is $5 at the door.
See and experience the race as never before
aboard: Windquest, the 2007 year’s overall winner;
Windancer, with John Nedeau in his 61st Mac race;
Peerless, skippered by Brian Torreson in his first
race; and Sourvenir, school teacher Steve Schiller’s
boat.
There’s no better seat in the house to see yacht
racing for what it really is - a test of skill, teamwork, and technology all at the mercy of the unpredictable breeze. The film won the 2009 Silver Telly,
the highest honor, from 13,000 entries from all 50
states. Founded in 1979, the Telly Awards is the
premier award honoring outstanding local, regional, and cable TV commercials and programs, the finest film and video productions, and groundbreaking
web commercials, videos and films. Winners represent the best work of the most respected advertising
agencies.

The Labor Day Weekend
It’s hard to believe that summer is almost at an end and that
another Labor Day weekend is upon us. The Beacher staff would
like to take this opportunity to say…
Thanks to ALL the advertisers and to our faithful
readers who support them.
Labor Day
Labor Day is observed throughout the United States in recognition of the dignity of labor, falling on the first Monday in September
each year. Labor organizations sponsor various celebrations, but
for most it is a day of rest. It also has become a symbol of the end
of summer.
Peter J. McGuire, general secretary of the Brotherhood of
Carpenters and Joiners, May 18, 1882, at a central Labor Union
meeting in New York City, proposed that “a day be set aside as a
festive day, during which parade through the streets of the city
would permit public tribute to American industry.” The motion was
adopted and plans for the first Labor Day celebration made. On
Sept. 5th of that year, workers staged the first Labor Day parade
in New York City.
October 7, 1884, American Federation of Labor meeting at Chicago,
A.C. Cameron, member of the Typographical Union 16 introduced
the following resolution: “Resolved, That the first Monday in
September each year be set aside as a laborers’ national holiday,
and that we recommend its observance by all wage workers, irrespective of sex, calling or nationality.”
In 1887, Oregon became the first state to make Labor Day a
legal holiday, followed the same year by Colorado, Massachusetts,
New Jersey and New York. By 1890 Connecticut, Nebraska and
Pennsylvania had followed suit. In 1894 President Grover Cleveland
signed a bill making Labor Day an official legal holiday for the
whole country.
World Wide Celebrations
Labor Day is also observed as a legal holiday on the first Monday
in September in Puerto Rico and Canada. In Australia, Labor
Day is called Eight Hour Day, and commemorates the successful
struggle for a shorter working day. The Australian holiday varies
from state to state. In Europe, Labor Day is May 1.

Annual High Tea Celebrates Friendship Gardens’ 75th Anniversary
by Jan Van Ausdal
Dr. Richard Houck, Master of Ceremonies, addresses the audience
On Sunday, August 8th at 2 p.m., the annual high
tea was held at International Friendship Gardens.
This year marks the Gardens’ 75th Anniversary;
the event is the major fund raiser for the gardens.
With a day of mostly cloudy skies and intermittent raindrops, everyone hoped the rain would hold
off until the tea’s conclusion. Luckily, the weather
cleared and the sun shone for a portion of the afternoon. The grounds were sprayed for two days
for mosquitoes, but the staff thoughtfully provided
guests with spray cans of mosquito repellant so they
would not be bitten by mosquitoes.
Golf Cart Driver Lionnel Ohlson transported
guests to the site of the tea. At Symphony Gardens,
guests were able to take some cool pink lemonade
punch with them to their tables.
At one table, I photographed the family group
of Kathleen Hoang with her six year old daughter,
Maria Hoang (Michigan City) and Kathleen’s sister,
Frances Cremin (Ireland) who is visiting here for
two weeks.
Those at a nearby table consisted of Judd Nuest
(Kouts), Jennifer Nuest (Fishers), Samantha and
Karen Bertram (Valparaiso), Kathryn Spencer (Valparaiso), and Lydia Dravinimkis (Valparaiso). Some
members of this group had been at the Gardens before.
Doug Moon of Michigan City posed beside the
musical equipment to be used for the afternoon entertainment.
Another table grouping was made up of Sister
Rita Marie Biegel (Michigan City), Sister Dolores
Anne Novak, Sister M. Marcene Franz, and Jack
Chartier of La Porte. A few of this group had spent
some time at the gardens many years ago.
Another fun-loving, younger group included
Shaun Pore (Valparaiso), and Annie Pod, Ralayn
Pfeiffer and Melissa Pfeiffer, all from Michigan City.
They were eagerly awaiting the tea and the entertainment.
Seated at my own table were: Susan Swanson with
her daughter, Rachel of Valparaiso, Joan Mokrycki,
Romona Hay and Bernie Lootens of Michigan City
and Janet Cypra of Beverly Shores. Susan Swanson
made the programs for the tea. Bernie Lootens had
never been to a tea before at the gardens but was
enjoying this one.
Dr. Richard Houck served as Master of Ceremonies. He spoke of the gardens’ history and of the
Stouffer brothers who were a part of its early days.
Then it was indeed tea time! Catered by Michi’s
Creative Catering, the menu included cucumber
sandwiches, chicken salad croissants, fresh fruit kabobs, almond sugar and lemon sugar cookies, mini

fruit tarts, scones with clotted cream, pink lemonade, hot and iced tea, and, of course, water which
was very good on such a hot day. Such a delicious
menu, indeed!
Next came the afternoon program presented by
Judith Joseph and her company of dancers and actors from the Acting Theatre of Michigan City. The
Theme was “Women I Have Danced” with comedy,
tragedy, and innovation celebrating the women Judith has danced and what they did for love.

On the musical program were an excerpt from
“Midsummer Night‘s Dream,” “Tribute to Today‘s
American Woman,” excerpt from “The Queen,” “The
Last Strauss Waltz of Janice La Tutu,” and two musical theater dancers, “Cassie,” and “Roxie Hart.”
Guests greatly enjoyed Judith Joseph and the performance of her troop members.
Troop members were: Madison Chartier, Linda Jo
Clough, Sophia Gardner-Orbovich, Rosanne Miller,
Doug Moon, Emily Murray, Sarah Murray, Don
Pfeiffer, Kim Riley, and Natalie Riley.
Nic Orbovich and Sunny Gardner-Orbovich enjoyed watching their young daughter, Sophia, perform in the afternoon program.

Door prizes given for the afternoon tea were two
individual annual memberships to Friendship Gardens. Her choice of a floral arrangement was the
prize given to a 94 year old woman present.
Dr. Richard Houck summed up the afternoon by
saying, “We’ve enjoyed having you and it’s been a
beautiful afternoon!”

Continuing Education Gardening Course
Purdue University North Central Office of Continuing Education, in conjunction with Taltree Arboretum and Gardens, is offering a three-part, noncredit gardening course.
This course will meet PNC-Porter County, 600
Vale Park Road, Valparaiso, on Wednesdays, Sept.

plants preserve well and when and where to gather
them. Each student will design a grapevine wreath
using provided dried plants and flowers.

The Music of Ben Walter---With Backup
Band “Notes to Myself”
Thursday, September 2: 8 p.m. MI time
Ticket price: $10 (followed by Thursday Night
Dance Party)
Discovering his passion for music at an early age,
Ben Walter began singing as a child and has proven
over the years that he has something worth listening to. After releasing his first album, “Woke up
to a life I’m spending” he added the backing band
Notes to Myself, consisting of John Guffey on guitar, James Guffey on bass, and Sam Parsons on
percussion, and started touring. With the release
of the sophomore album “House Go Boom” they are
back on the road again. With sounds ranging from
haunting to soulful, jazzy to classic, or just plain off
the beat, Ben Walter with Notes to Myself has it
all. Their blend of piano, pop, rock and jazzy blues
will catch your ear, but it the honest, emotion filled
words that will make you a life-long fan.

The Acorn Theater has established a wonderful

opportunity. David Lahm will be visiting from New
York and will accompany vocalists on the piano. If
vocalist would like, he is willing to offer gentle suggestions on how to improve their singing.
David Lahm has provided a “cheat sheet” of lyrics in case you would like the security of having the

daily fee for $3.00 per day for each dog ($4.00 for out
of county); Annual Fee is $25 first dog ($30.00 out
of county residents), $5.00 for each additional dog.
The user fees helps maintain the no-leash facilities.
This is one of four No Leash Dog facilities in the
county. In addition to Luhr County Park, there is
a no-leash facility at Bluhm County Park (three
acres), at Creek Ridge County Park (three and a
quarter acre) and another at the Small Animal
Shelter (near the fairgrounds). As a reminder all
pets must be on a leash outside the no-leash areas
in the parks.

Artists Take Barn by Storm!
by Charles McKelvy
Prairie Club artists, past and present, presented
patrons with a Red Barn full of wonderful works of
art at Art in the Barn II in Harbert on August 7 and
8.
After perusing an amazing assortment of paintings, photographs, sculpture, and structures created from wood found on the beach, a patron was
heard to remark: “There is so much talent here!”
Of course, this is the Prairie Club, and the second annual Art in the Barn event was a tremendous
success, largely due to the efforts of Rita Dickey and
Red Barn Program Chair Diane Williams.
Herself an expressive painter of classic Prairie
Club scenes, Madam Dickey put out the call to Prairie Club artists to exhibit their work, and then she
shepherded them through the open reception and
on to a successful conclusion on Sunday afternoon.
Leo Krusack’s restored Chinese Coastal Junk
got rave reviews, especially from Asian languages
scholar Tim Wixted, who noted that the characters
inscribed on the hull suggested the vessel was actually from Vietnam.
Everyone was happy to see the restored Dudley
dune painting which was displayed opposite Leo’s
testament to amazing manual dexterity. Hey, Leo is
a retired dentist, all right?
Oil paintings by the late Betty Craig were on
view next to paintings by her daughter Sarah, and
the camp’s star quilter, Gwen McKee, did not disappoint. Long-time Prairie Clubber, Chris Ford, dazzled patrons with the detailed structures he fashioned from bits and pieces of wood he had found on
the beach.
John Gooch laid out an array of arresting color
photographs, and Jim White put forth some of his
excellent oil paintings. Oh, and photographs by that
“yours truly” guy were there too.
And there were works by such Prairie Club legends as Julia Wixted, Henry Holmes, Herbert Tuitts, Florence Whitson and Mary Tucker to enjoy before heading over to H. Critchfield’s amazing color
photograph, the Other Side from the Other Side,
which he took at Cherry Beach at sunset. How H.
got the Chicago skyline to pop out of the horizon like
that is just going to have remain one of his secrets.
Good refreshments were had by all, and all went
home counting the days ‘til Art in the Barn III.
Leo Krusack restored this model of a Chinese coastal junk in 2009 and
said he really worked hard to get the rigging right.
Chris Ford crafted this realistic structure from bits and pieces of wood he
found on the beach.

Solutions For an Indelicate Problem
by Rick A. Richards
(editor’s note: Sometimes you have to judge a
story on its smile-ability factor, so although The
Beacher doesn’t have a business page per se, we
found this story so doggone cute… a real tail-wagger! Sally C.)
Dogs may be man’s best friend, but they aren’t
all that friendly when it comes to cleaning up after
themselves. In fact, they’re downright rude.
It’s a fact of life that dogs will do their duty two
or three times a day, leaving little presents behind
for their master to clean up. It’s not an especially
pleasing housekeeping chore, particularly on a hot
summer day.
Maybe that’s why a growing number of people
have decided they’re simply not going to do it anymore. No, they’re not being a slob; they’ve decided to
have someone else clean up after their pet.
Charles Lewis, owner of Yard Doodles, poses with the sign affixed to his
Jeep. (Photo provided by Charles Lewis)
In Northwest Indiana, that someone else is
Charles Lewis of LaPorte. Last year, he started a
company called Yard Doodles, which specializes in
removing dog logs from yards.
He has been as surprised as anyone at how his
entrepreneurial venture has taken off. A year ago,
he had 38 clients. This year, he has 100.
“If you have a dog, you have to clean up after it,”
said Lewis, whose full-time job is in the radiology
department at LaPorte Hospital. “I do this early in
the morning and on the weekend. And I found out
my idea isn’t as unique as I thought. There are a lot
of them in the Chicago area.
“My biggest challenge is educating people that
the service is there. Since a lot of people in urban areas already have people to clean their house and do
their laundry, this falls right in there,” said Lewis.
So what on earth possessed Lewis to latch onto
picking up dog droppings as a job?
“My mom broke her hip two years ago and she
had a dog that needed to be taken care of,” said
Lewis. “While I was doing that, the idea struck me
that this might be something people might be interested in.
“I’ve done this all my life as a pet owner. To me,
it’s not a big deal, but a lot of people use me because
they work all the time and don’t have time to clean
up after their dogs.” And while most of Lewis’ customers fall into that category, there are a few who
simply have enough money that they prefer to pay
someone else to clean up after their pet than do it
themselves.
Lewis admits that his sense of humor comes in
handy when he tells people what his part-time job
is.
“I’ve been the butt end of a lot of jokes, but at the
same time, people go, ‘Hmmm. That’s a pretty good
idea.’
“You have to have a sense of humor about it because, let’s face it, you’re cleaning up dog crap. A
couple of guys I work with at the hospital will sniff
as you go by or they check their shoes. You just
laugh and go on. I tell people it’s kind of like a treasure hunt, but it’s the same prize every time. It’s
fun. I’ve had a good time with it.”
That sense of humor is evident in the name of his
business – Yard Doodles. “You want to be creative,
but you don’t want to be gross. How do you say what
you’re doing but make it appealing?”
In fact, Lewis’ daughter, Erin, 9, has turned the
business’s name into a verb. “When I’m out working,
she says I’m doodling,” said Lewis. His wife, Tracy,
who also works at LaPorte Hospital, takes care of
the billing and his son, Adam, 13, occasionally helps
out on a doodle run.
And Lewis isn’t alone in his sense of humor. It
seems the people who get into the business have the
same philosophy as Lewis in coming up with a descriptive – but not gross – name. And, yes, it is a big
business. The Association of Professional Animal
Waste Specialists (aPAWS) has 98 members across
the country, four of them in Indiana, including Yard
Doodles.
Some of the names of those businesses are incredibly descriptive – Pet Poop Patrol, Pet Butler, The
Pooh Crew, When Doody Calls, The Poop Troop, No.
2 Dog Waste Removal, Minesweepers, Yard Guards,
Poop Be Gone, Sir Scoop a Lot, Sergeant Scooper,
Bomb Squad, The Poop and Nothing But the Poop
and Wholly Krap Canine Waste Removal.
“We’re a pretty creative bunch,” said Lewis.
But when it comes to doing the work, Lewis is
strictly business. He shows up with his tools, wearing a T-shirt with the company logo and gets right
down to business. His service ranges from a once-aweek clean-up to a twice-a-week service for one to
four dogs.
THE
September 2, 2010
Charles Lewis uses a giant “pooper scooper” he built to clean up dog
waste from the front yard of a client. (Photo provided by Charles Lewis)
And the size of the dog doesn’t impact the cost,
said Lewis. Clients with Chihuahuas pay the same
as a client with a St. Bernard.
Lewis has devised an oversized pooper scooper
that has a trash bag attached for easy disposal.
When he’s done, everything is double bagged and
disposed of in the customer’s trash can or taken to
one of two area animal shelters for disposal. When
he’s done, he disinfects his tools before putting them
into the back of his Jeep, which he affectionately
calls the Poopmobile.
“You do a lot of walking,” said Lewis, who uses a
grid pattern to cover each yard so as not to miss a
pile. “My customers expect me on a certain day at a
certain time.”
For clients whose dogs aren’t so friendly (Lewis
hasn’t been bitten), he asks that the animals be
confined inside the house or garage. Otherwise, the
dogs that greet Lewis playfully follow him around
the yard.
Charles Lewis, owner of Yard Doodles in LaPorte, poses with his Jeep
(he affectionately calls it his “poopmobile), and the tools of his trade.

Page 53
“It depends on the size of the yard, but it usually
takes 15 or 20 minutes to get the job done,” said
Lewis, adding that if dogs are in the yard while he’s
there, he’ll make an extra pass to make sure they
didn’t leave a surprise where he’s just scooped.
The haul he takes can be fairly sizeable, too. “Dogs
do their duty two or three times a day, so there can
be between 20 and 28 piles out there if I’m cleaning
up once a week.”
And Lewis guarantees that if he misses one, he’ll
come back and collect it without charge.
“I pick up about five pounds a week from a medium-sized dog, but in some places, it’s 10 pounds
or more. St. Bernards are even larger,” said Lewis.
“People think about their dog, not what it’s leaving
behind. If they don’t keep up with it, keeping their
backyard clean can become overwhelming.”
Besides being unsightly and smelly, Lewis said
there’s another reason to get rid of dog droppings
from the yard. “It’s a health hazard. There is bacteria and disease in dog waste. You can’t use it in
compost because it’s protein based, not plant based
like a cow.
“If you don’t clean up, your dog can run through
it and when he comes back in the house he tracks
it in and when he jumps on the couch, he gets it
on the cushion where you sit to watch TV and eat
your snacks,” said Lewis, painting a not too pretty
picture.
And it’s not just pet owners who appreciate a
yard free of dog poop. “I had one customer tell me
the lawn service he used wanted to change the day
they came to mow so it was on the same day or the
day after I was there. I wondered why, and when I
asked I found out they wanted the yard clean so they
didn’t have to clean the droppings off their mowers.”
Lewis’s job turns out to be one few people want to
do, but one everyone appreciates.

September’s the time for Hoosier history buffs—
and others who want to broaden their horizons—to
learn about archaeological sites and artifacts, make
stone tools and talk with archaeologists. That’s because it’s Indiana Archaeology Month.
Gov. Mitch Daniels has proclaimed Sept. 1 as Indiana Archaeology Month Kick-off Day.
This year’s slogan, “Archaeology Rocks,” is a play
on words in several ways. It conveys the excitement
of archaeology and what can be learned through the
science. The commemorative poster design this year
features an interesting array of prehistoric stone
artifacts, all found in Indiana.
Years of archaeological investigations have
helped state residents understand the complexity of
the prehistoric and historic people who also called
this land home.
“Archaeology tells us not only about the past but
sheds light about ourselves today and our future,”
said Robert E. Carter Jr., DNR director. “Archaeology Month provides a perfect way for Hoosiers to
learn how with programs that are not only educational and informative but also fun.”
In honor of this celebration, the DNR invites Hoosiers to discover the stories behind the facts of the
state’s archaeological tale. For instance, the state
archaeologist works for the DNR. Also, archaeologists have conducted investigations in Indiana since
the early 1800s, finding and recording more than
59,000 archaeological sites.
Indiana Archaeology Month features events for
all ages. For a schedule and more information, see
dnr.IN.gov/historic or contact Amy Johnson of the
DNR Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology, [email protected] or (317) 232-1646.

Burn by Nevada Barr
Background knowledge of a subject
is a powerful tool in writing a novel. It
makes the subject more realistic and
separates the ho-hum writers from
the best sellers. Since Nevada Barr
is a former park ranger herself, and
since this story takes place in New
Orleans, Nevada’s home town, I’d say
we’re off to a great start...
Burn is the 16th novel in the series
about Anna Pigeon, National Park
ranger. Previous books about Anna
have taken the reader from one national park to another with danger
and mystery following her through
every mountain, forest and desert.
Even in a novel, eventually all this murder and
mayhem has to show its toll on the hero and this
story takes up with Anna on a leave of absence to
get her wits about her and heal, both inside and out.
Burn starts out with Anna stopping off in the Big
Easy, no national park to wander through, just the
jungle of the seedy parts of a town torn apart with
political corruption and the aftermath of Katrina.
Since her husband can’t accompany her on this
trip, Anna decides to visit her old friend, Geneva,
who is a blind ranger who sings in the New Orleans
Jazz National Historical Park. Say what?! Apparently, the park service does more than help preserve
the natural beauty of our country...
“The musicians wore green and gray, cordovan
belts and shoes, and tidy brass nameplates over
their left breast pockets. They were park rangers;
their job was to protect and preserve the musical
heritage of the historic city of New Orleans. Anna
loved it. In the name of political pork, the Park Service preserved so many worthless bits of history that
some said the NPS was where white elephants went
to die. Then there were places like this, where the
sacred torch of a time long past was carried, still
burning, into the present.”
Her friend Geneva was blind since an accident
when she was a child. She also was a genuine blues
singer and good friend who didn’t question when
Anna asked to come down and visit a spell. She
lived in the historic district of the city...
“On her aunt’s death Geneva had inherited not a
single house but a ramshackle complex with three
rental apartments and a two-car garage-unheard of
in this part of town...”
After settling down, Anna told Geneva of her first
encounter in town: meeting a punk whose dog had
gotten loose and how she chased the dog who was
apparently chasing another man. After an alterca-
September 2, 2010
tion with the man, she managed to
grab the dog and return it to the punk
who thanked her by screaming at her
to mind her own business. Imagine
Anna’s surprise when she finds out
the punk rents an apartment from
Geneva. And that’s not all--the punk,
named Jordan, works as a bartender
at a seedy strip joint. There’s something unsettling about him…
Meanwhile, hundreds of miles
away in Seattle, Washington, Claire
leaves her home in the middle of the
night to get cough medicine for one
of her daughters. She returns to find
the house empty, even the dog missing. After calling the police and going
across the street to question her neighbor, the house
explodes and burns to the ground.
Who would want her husband and two little girls
killed? Yes, her husband was Middle Eastern and
had changed his name after 9/11, but where was the
motive? She didn’t have much time to think about it
as the police think Claire is their number one suspect when they find out the husband had a mistress.
Revenge is a convenient motive and ties the whole
mess up in one tidy bundle.
Clair’s only hope is to follow the clues to wherever
they lead, clear her name and discover the truth...
How these two stories intersect makes for some
great reading. Add to the mix a little New Orleans
voodoo (a dead pigeon marked with strange symbols
is left in Anna’s garbage), and signs that the punk,
Jordan, might be into pedophilia and child pornography, is an entertaining read that might want to
make you read more of Nevada Barr’s favorite park
ranger.
I like the way Barr delves into the minds of these
two women, each looking for answers to questions
that may or may not have any. The real question is
whether or not Anna’s outdoor instincts will prove
useful in the big city…
The New York Times Book Review said, “Nevada
Barr writes with a cool, steady hand about the violence of nature and the cruelty of man.”
And from the San Diego Union-Tribune, “From
the fabric of fiction she creates real worlds, sometimes beautiful, sometimes terrifying, but always
convincing.”
Loved it! Till next time, happy reading!
