arolina Forest had to call a last-second
audible.
But it was a move that coach Drew
Hummel and the Panthers believe they had to
make.
Quarterback Robert Gray, the tall and
talented lefty who started
the majority of the team’s
games in 2009, left the
program on July 15. It
immediately thrust Hummel’s team into the hands
of junior Danny Daly.
“We had a long talk
about the middle of July,
Hummel
and we kind of decided the
best situation for [Gray] to
do was to pursue baseball,” Hummel said.
“His situation was that he really couldn’t fully
commit himself to the cause, and we talked
about commitment and what it takes to be in

At Miller-Motte you will not only get a good education

Career training programs are offered in the
following in-demand fields:
BY CHARLES SLATE TSN
Danny Daly will be the
Panthers’ new starting
quarterback this year.
THE SCOOP
➤ Coach | Drew Hummel, fifth
year (12-31 at Carolina Forest
and overall)
➤ Last season | 3-8, 1-4 Region
VI-AAAA; fifth in region;
missed playoffs
➤ Returning starters | 6
offense (3 OL, RB, 2 WR) , 7
defense (2 DL, 3 LB, 2 DB)
➤ Base schemes | Multiple
offense, 3-5 defense
➤ Strengths | Returning running
back Mark Timmons and
backfield mate Harold Atkinson
should be able to carry much
of the load for the Panthers
this year. With that position
locked down, it should give
Hummel some wiggle room
while he straightens out the
quarterback position.
➤ Weaknesses | Carolina Forest
not only lost its top passer
from last year’s team; it also is
without receiver Ronnie
Moses, a record-holder in
multiple school categories.
Moses was an electric player
who often made up for other
mistakes. The team will have
to prove it has someone to
step into his shoes.
➤ Outlook | The Panthers went
from no wins in 2008 to three
wins in 2009. But that sort of
upward shift in the standings
will be hard to replicate.
Carolina Forest will need to
improve during the first part of
the season to compete with
its region opponents later
down the road. Otherwise, it
could be another long season.

Moody, Tigers come back

here was no debate when camp
opened for Conway this year.
The Tigers’ quarterback was
going to be Mykal Moody. No ifs, ands
or buts.
It’s a different feeling for coach

season with a guy even he didn’t know
much about.

defense
➤ Strengths | With a full year under his belt,
quarterback Mykal Moody should start showing some signs of
developing into the quarterback the Conway faithful hoped he would.
Moody will also have a number of experienced players around him,
which means that growth could get a helping hand.
➤ Weaknesses | While the Conway faithful awaits Moody’s progress,
more eyes should be on the defense. The Tigers gave up more than
30 points a game in 2009, including a 71-point allowance against
South Florence.
➤ Outlook | Surely the Tigers can’t have back-to-back losing seasons,
can they? That question will start to be answered soon, and all signs
point to the fact that, while Conway probably won’t be competing for
a state title, seven, eight or even nine wins is attainable.

GEORGETOWN BULLDOGS
➤ Coach | Bradley Adams, first year at Georgetown
and as head coach
➤ Last season | 2-8, 1-4

region, missed playoffs.
➤ Returning starters | 5
offense (QB, RB, WR, 2 OL),
4 defense (2 DL, 2 LB)
➤ Base schemes | Spread
offense, 4-3 defense
➤ Strengths | The Bulldogs
Adams
should be strong up front
with an offensive line
averaging more than 250 pounds, and will have a
few tough downhill runners at tailback. The team
will be athletic on defense, particularly returning
starters Ernest Greene and Tyler McDonald at
inside linebacker.
➤ Weaknesses | Players will have to learn new
offensive and defensive schemes, including
quarterback Patrick Ward, who will be running a
spread offense. There is youth and inexperience
in the secondary.
➤ Outlook | Myrtle Beach will be tough to topple
in the region, and Wilson will be a favorite for a
playoff berth. Earning one of the other two
playoff spots from the region is an attainable goal
for the Bulldogs if they improve in Adams’ first
year.
Bulldogs toughening up under first-year coach
BY ALAN BLONDIN

F
irst-year Georgetown coach Bradley
Adams isn’t all that disconcerted by
the loss of about 10 players from the
football program since summer training
sessions began.
Adams says he’s trying to change the culture at Georgetown, and there are bound to
be some casualties.
He’s still got about 45 full-time varsity
players and another handful of varsity/JV
swing players.
“We’ve got to get tougher and build some
accountability and discipline in these kids
before we know much about what we’re in
for,” said Adams, 30. “We’ve been doing that
since we’ve gotten here. We’ve lost a few kids
that weren’t able to hang with what we’re
trying to do.”
Georgetown will run a spread offense but
Adams intends to establish a consistent running game with tailback Leonard Leak and
the use of an H-back that will act as a tight
end or fullback. The plan is to run the ball
about 65 percent of the time behind an offensive line that averages more than 250 pounds
and includes returning starter Tyler Marsh at
center and 2009 all-region tackle Darius
Brown.
“I’m a young but old-school in my mind
guy. I love to run the football,” Adams said.
The performance of returning staring
quarterback Patrick Ward will be a key in the
spread offense. “He’s a good kid and smart
kid, but it will take him probably until Week 4

respect and do the things
that we need to do for the
team.”
Insert Daly, a different
kind of signal-caller who
automatically turns the Panthers into a different type of
team. Whereas Gray – standing at 6 foot, 5 inches – was
pass-first, Daly has more
ability to run the ball.
That might have been the
route the Panthers were
going to take anyway.
Carolina Forest will also
enter this season without the
services of receiver Ronnie
Moses, the team’s biggest
offensive threat from a year
ago. Moses now plays for
Coastal Carolina.
And while the team is not
completely devoid of quality
receivers – two others caught
at least 40 passes last year –
the offense will revolve
around senior scat back
Mark Timmons and sophomore bruiser Harold
Atkinson.
Add in Daly’s running and
the Panthers’ strength is
clear.
“You can look at it one of
two ways: Glass half-full or
half-empty,” Hummel said.
“We feel good about what
Danny Daly can bring, his

athleticism and his toughness
to the game that will
compensate.”
Hummel also said there is
some strength in numbers,
and more importantly, experience in numbers. He said
this has been the best offseason in his five years at the
school.
It was a credit to attrition
for all those players who are
finally upperclassmen.
“We’ve had to play so
many guys the last two years
before they should have been
thrown into the mix that in
some occasions, you were
just overmatched in some
situations,” Hummel said.
“They were having to play
before they were physically
ready to play.”
man, he didn’t even get to
practice with us in the
spring,” Jordan said. “He was
not able to go full pads, so we
didn’t really know he was
going to be our quarterback
until after our first couple
scrimmages.”
Moody showed flashes of
brilliance, including a 53-yard
touchdown run in the season
opener against North Myrtle
Beach.
He also certainly had his
growing pains. At times, he
struggled to read defenses.
As Jordan is quick to point
out, though, much of the
offense’s struggles had little
to do with who was behind
center.
Conway’s offensive line last
year struggled against several opponents and Moody was
left running more than the
Tigers would have liked. That
unit is back nearly intact
from a season ago, and Jordan believes that experience
could help out not only Moody, but the entire offense.
“He’s progressing well. But
the bottom line is … you got to
surround those great players
with other players and people
who can make them look
good,” Jordan said. “I feel real
good about Myke. I think he’s
going to do some good things.
But it depends on the people
we can surround him with,
too.”
However, Moody will have
little direct impact on another
area of concern for the Tigers. Conway’s defense last
year struggled.
Six opponents – Summerville, Marlboro County, Hartsville, South Florence, Sumpter and North Augusta –
dropped at least 41 points on
the Tigers last year. None
was more embarrassing than
the 71-21 beating South Florence dropped on Conway on
Oct. 23.
That leaves six returning
defensive starters hungry to
prove they can be monumentally better. Defensive backs
Emmit Kelly and Kendrick
Evans and defensive lineman
Kerwin Johnson, as well as
linebacker Devonta Gore will
have to bring the unit up to
form in a hurry. After a season
opener against North Myrtle
Beach, the Tigers will have to
face Summerville, a team that
beat them by 35 points a season ago.

Seahawks plan to continue to

Not after two straight appearances in the Class AAA title game and one state
championship.
“We’re not going to

coach said. “We’ll add

and there along the way.
You always have to so you
don’t get stale and give
other teams a chance to

prepare for that kind of
stuff. We’ll do that. But
we’re going to do what we do. We’re going to
throw it as many times as we can.”
That means the opponents on the Seahawks’ schedule better be ready for the
same dose of pass-happy offense that has
made Myrtle Beach stand out as one of the
best in the state for the past handful of
seasons.
And while it starts with quarterback
Everett Golson, it’s the number of weapons
playing for Wilson that take the offense to
new heights.
Receivers Donte Sumpter, Dallas Goodman and Jaquan Wilson – to name a few –
running back Daiquone Ford and a slew of
others should continue to give opposing
defenses fits again in 2010.
“Those guys,” Mickey Wilson said, “are
pretty far ahead in the game, as far as knowing what to do.
“Having Everett back, and having those
receivers back, it just kind of really put us
ahead. There wasn’t much of a learning
curve there.”
In addition to playing in the same system
for years and tearing through 7-on-7 passing
leagues this summer, the Seahawks are also
bolstered by a group of 22 very experienced
seniors that wants nothing more than to go
out on top.

➤ Coach | Mickey Wilson (13-2 at Myrtle Beach and
overall)
➤ Last season | 13-2, 5-0 Region VII-AAA, won
region; lost to Clinton 35-26 in Class AAA state
title game
➤ Returning starters | 8 offense (QB, 3 OL, 3 WR,
RB), 5 defense (3 DL, MLB, S)
➤ Base schemes | Spread offense, 4-3 defense
➤ Strengths | With 22 seniors, this team is heavy
on experience. And with yet another year in
Mickey Wilson’s offense, the Seahawks should
have no problem putting up some of the prolific
numbers they did a season ago. Behind starting
quarterback Everett Golson and a corps of
receivers who can all go the distance at any time,
the offense should be the best in the area yet
again.
➤ Weaknesses | Wilson is bringing back five
starters on defense, but he’s made it clear getting
the unit to function at a higher level is priority
No. 1. Myrtle Beach will have to replace two
starting linebackers, a starting defensive lineman
and tthreedefensive backs.
➤ Outlook | All eyes will again be on Golson and
that offense. This team stands out as one that can
qualify for its third consecutive appearance in the
Class AAA state title game. It may not be
championship or bust for the Seahawks, but that
assessment probably isn’t far off.

playoffs in 2009, it set off celebrations for current and past Braves football

The school had its first
playoff victory.
The reward? A 41-3 drubbing to Marlboro County in
the second round.
That playoff loss serves
as a reminder for the start

Renfrow
his team if that’s going to be

“We’ll find out this year how the kids respond, if they’re satisfied with a playoff win

progress as far as getting to the playoffs and
advancing.”
That won’t be easy.

The Braves lost seven starters from an
offensive unit that served not only as one that
would put points on the board, but also one
that kept the ball out of the hands of opposing
defenses by using up clock. Socastee’s option
offense, though, will have to maintain without
the likes of quarterback Zack Elliman and
fullback Brendan Hyde, who stepped into the
position a week into last season and ran with
it.
Those two players have been replaced by
quarterback Jordan Renfrow, the coach’s son,
and P.J. Brave, who will be making the transition from halfback to fullback in the Braves’
offense.
“P.J.’s gonna get the ball,” Tim Renfrow
said. “We start off putting the ball in our
fullback’s belly just about every play. We’re
going to depend a lot on P.J. He’s going to run
the ball hard.”
Brave and Jordan Renfrow will be joined in
the backfield by Michquan Brown and Daquan Brown. Michquan Brown, though, won’t
be full speed at the beginning of the season
due to an offseason hand injury.
Once he returns, the Braves should again
have four legitimate backs for an offense that
relies heavily on running the ball.
Tim Renfrow said he hopes the versatility
in the backfield will allow the Braves to get
more runners to the outside of the line via the
pitch. And the Braves hope that will help
them turn the corner when playoff time rolls
around.

Socastee halfback Daquan Brown (right) will be counted on to pick up
the slack as the Braves wait for fellow running back Michquan Brown
to recover from a hand injury .
Socastee’s P.J. Brave figures to get a lot
of carries despite moving into the
fullback role this season.
THE SCOOP
➤ Coach | Tim Renfrow, eighth year (37-42 at
Socastee, 45-64 overall)
➤ Last season | 6-6, 3-2 Region VII-AAA; third in
region, beat Hilton Head 23-20 in first round of
Class AAA playoffs; lost to Marlboro County 41-3
in second round.
➤ Returning starters | 4 offense (2 RB, OL, WR),
5 defense (DT, DE, LB, 2 CB)
➤ Base schemes | Option offense, 4-3 defense
➤ Strengths | The Braves have the aptly named P.J.
Brave running the ball. And while the move to
fullback could be seen as a demotion in other
offenses, it’s anything but in the run-first, run-second
Socastee attack. Brave could get upward of 25
carries a game, and considering he’s a spark plug
waiting to fire, he’ll have the opportunity to blow up
defenses quite a bit this season.
➤ Weaknesses | Replacing Zack Elliman at
quarterback will be no easy task. Jordan
Renfrow, the coach’s son, will have to take on
that role. But he’ll have some pressure to run
that offense at the level Elliman did for two
years.
➤ Outlook | If running back Michquan Brown
recovers successfully from a hand injury suffered
during the summer, the Braves should be able to
improve upon their 6-6 mark from a year ago.
However, that may have to include winning not
just one game in the playoffs, but two.
Socastee’s schedule is anything but easy, and it
will have to take advantage of winnable games.

CHIEFS
From Page 8PF
players who were in spring practice have decided not to be a
part of the program, which means depth will be a big concern,
but he is happy with the core of players who have bought into
the new regime.
“I’m hoping we’ll have a successful year, but it just depends
on how quickly our young kids grow up. But we are building
this thing for the long run. We’ve done things the right way
and the kids are playing the right way. We lost a lot of guys
from the spring, but the ones that are still with us are in it for
the long haul. That’s kind of the way we are building the program now at North Myrtle Beach,” Woolbright said.
The Chiefs will scrap the Wing-T offense in favor of a runfirst version of the spread, and Woolbright said most of the
team’s returning starters from last season will be lining up in
different spots in 2010.
Playmaker Timmy Bellamy (6-1, 180) could end up under
THE SCOOP
center, or could wind up getting the ball from quarterback
Clint Cole (5-9, 165). The offense will also include playmakers
in running back Brandon Johnson (6-0, 195) and receiver Temarrick Hemingway (6-5, 210), who also stars at defensive end.
“We try to put our best athlete at quarterback, but that kind
of goes with personnel. We got one guy that could be that, and
we’ve got another guy that wouldn’t be our best athlete there,
but he’d be capable of playing the position,” Woolbright said.
North Myrtle Beach will play a 3-4 on defense, and Woolbright hopes to bring a level of physicality that he said has
been missing from the team.
As Woolbright and his team begin work on the foundation
for success, a key will be how quickly the players can learn the
new systems on offense and defense, as well as learning new
positions.
“We’ve got new players, everybody playing a new position.
Nobody’s really playing where they were last year. It’s a total
revamp … We’ve got wing backs that are receivers now. We’ve
got guys who were linemen last year in the Wing-T that are
linebackers for us now. We just don’t have depth.” he said.

➤ Last season | 4-7, 2-3 Region VII-AAA; finished fourth in region, lost
to North Charleston 47-27 in first round of the Class AAA playoffs.
➤ Returning starters | 4 offense, 4 defense
➤ Base schemes | Spread offense, 3-4 defense
➤ Strengths | The Chiefs have playmakers who can break tackles and
cover ground quickly on offense, and a strong offensive line should
help QB Timmy Bellamy (6-1, 180), RB Brandon Johnson (6-0, 195)
and WR Temarrick Hemingway (6-5, 210) find room to move.
Returning kicker Zack Crowl is one of the area’s best.
➤ Weaknesses | With nearly two dozen players who participated in
spring practice having left the program, the Chiefs will have a hard
time finding players to spell the talented starters. And with new
systems on offense and defense, there may be some lag time before
everyone gets on the same page of the playbook.
➤ Outllook | Another playoff berth is certainly within reach for North
Myrtle Beach, especially in a top-heavy region that has plenty of
parity among its bottom four teams.

ith a tough non-region schedule to begin the season, the
last thing Billy Hurston needed was for his team to be hit with the
injury bug.
Unfortunately for the St. James football team, it has happened.
The good news?
Hurston expects incumbent starting
quarterback Chase
Smith – who broke his
knee cap in the spring
– to be 100 percent to
start the season.
The bad news?
Hurston
Other key players –
No. 1 wide receiver
Caleb Duggan and starting guard and
long snapper Austin Brown – were injured late in the preseason. Not to mention tailback Deshawn Cox, who is recovering from a broken tibia and fibula and
is several weeks away from returning,

according to Hurston.
However, Hurston expects his younger
players to benefit from early-season play
before the team gets fully healthy, which
could be right around the time region
play begins.
“If we can get everybody healthy and
get through these first five games, get
some experience for our young kids, I
think we’re going to be tough in our five
region games,” Hurston said. “Hopefully
we win three of our first five non-region
games – they’re going to be tough, all of
them.”
Though Smith returns, he won’t be
getting all the snaps under center. Hurston plans on platooning Smith with
fellow senior Carl Buddin – at least for
now.
“We run the same offenses with them.
Chase is probably a little stronger running for short yardage. Carl right now is
probably a little bit more mobile. They
both throw the ball about the same,”
Hurston said. “We’re going to play them
both, give them reps, and if there’s a
clear-cut winner, the other one is probably going to go to tight end.
“We’re in a great position if one of
them gets nicked up or hurt – or if one is
just playing better than the other one.
Wilson won a state championship twoplatooning, Alabama won the national
championship two-platooning.”

Coach | Billy Hurston, seventh year (14-47 at St. James and overall)
Last season | 2-8, 0-5 Region VII-AAA; last in region; missed playoffs
Returning starters | 3 offense (2 OL, QB), 2 defense (2 DL)
Base schemes | Spread and I-formation offense; 4-4 defense
Strengths | The Sharks have two viable options at quarterback in
Chase Smith and Carl Buddin, both of whom Hurston believes “have a
chance to play at the next level.” Hurston expects good things from
the defensive line, headed by all-region performer Nuji Holmes.
➤ Weaknesses | Hurston said the team is young and lacks depth at
linebacker, on the offensive line and in the secondary, where missing
cornerback Deshawn Cox for several weeks won’t help.
➤ Outlook | Hurston said he’s very optimistic despite injury troubles.
The Sharks will start many young players, whom Hurston said are

A
ndrews will be a better
football team this year
than it was in 2009.
The question for the Yellow
Jackets is will they be improved
enough to earn a playoff berth in a
region that includes Timberland,
Lake City, Manning and Kingstree? Andrews went winless last
season in Region VII-AA, which
also includes Bishop England.
“I’m happy where we are right
now as a football team,” said second-year Andrews coach Steve
Blanchard. “We are 100 percent
better than last year. The team’s
dedication, focus, determination
and attitude are all better. ... Now
we just have to put up some W’s in
the regular season.”
Andrews lost just five seniors
off last year’s 2-8 squad and returns a wealth of experience with
eight starters on both offense and
defense returning, including talented senior quarterback Ken
Funnye to run a flexbone option
offense. “He’s put in a lot of work,”
Blanchard said. “He went to a
couple camps and has focused on
football this offseason.”
All four starting defensive linemen and three members of the secondary return, as do two running
backs, three offensive linemen and
tight end Rodquel Davis. A few
first-year upperclassmen have
joined the team, as well as senior
Loris transfer Michael Mabry, who
will start as a lineman.
The Yellow Jackets won all four
of their preseason scrimmages
and its jamboree appearance
without allowing a single
touchdown.
“We’ve done a great job in the
offseason,” Blanchard said.
“Those kids have put a lot of work
from the end of last season to now,
so the kids have dedicated themselves to getting better.
“It’s taken us a year to do it but
I really think we’ve touched on
some really good things.”
Parents of team members and
the Andrews booster club have also shown an interest in the betterment of the program. They helped
clean and pressure wash the stadium and improve field conditions.
“The field looks good,” Blanchard said. “Just from a pride factor you walk in there and look at
something nice and you feel better about yourself. Those are
things that had to change here.”

➤ Coach | Steven Blanchard, second year (2-8 at
Andrews and 13-29 overall in four years)
➤ Last season | 2-8, 0-5 Region
VII-AA; last in region, missed
playoffs
➤ Returning starters | 8 offense
(QB, 2 RB, 3 OL, TE, WR), 8
defense (4 DL, 3 DB, LB)
➤ Base schemes | Flexbone/option
offense, 4-2-5 defense
➤ Strengths | Dedication and
Blanchard
experience with eight returning
starters on offense and eight
returners on defense, though many of those are the
same two-way players. The offensive line will be much
improved, and quarterback Ken Funnye is a smooth
operator of the option.
➤ Weaknesses | Depth is an issue with so many
players starting on both sides of the ball and a small
school enrollment for a Class AA school. Though
improvement has been made in strength and
conditioning, more is needed.
➤ Outlook | The Yellow Jackets have made strides to
win more games, particularly in their non-region
schedule, but making the playoffs will still be a
challenge with four formidable football programs in
their region.

ill bigger mean better for the Aynor Blue Jackets?
That is the hope for coach Jody Jenerette,
whose team will have its biggest offensive line in
recent memory.
“We’re going to be about 240 [pounds] across the board,
hopefully. You’ve got to coach physicality, be physical,” said
Jenerette.
That size up front prompted a change in offensive scheme
as Aynor switches to a double wing offense that puts a premium on power,
closed gaps between offensive linemen
and misdirection while grinding down the
field, keeping the other team’s offense on
the sidelines and keeping the clock
running.
“You’ve got to take the air out of the
ball and not just play defense. I think in
Jenerette
the situation we’ve been in at Aynor, our
clientele leads us to not play defense,”
Jenerette said. “If we are playing too much defense, we are
going to get beat pretty bad, so we try to keep the clock
ticking. That’s the most important thing we are going to do
with this offense. Be happy with three [yards], if you get
four, that’s basically a touchdown.”
That big line will be anchored by a two third-year starters
among seven returning offensive starters in Walt McCracken (5-10, 251) and all-region pick Seth Harrelson (5-11, 241).
Tight end Phil Doyle (6-0, 192) is also a third-year starter,
but a preseason neck injury leaves his season in doubt.
“We’ve got a bunch of good, young linemen that I really
like. I’ve had more fun coaching since the spring than I’ve
had in the last six years I left Conway. It’s the funnest group
I’ve ever coached. We’ve had a blast and we’re just excited
about getting the season started,” Jenerette said.
The Blue Jackets will feature a handful of able ball carriers, paced by state 400-meter hurdles champion Devante

Senior quarterback Peyton Hill (6-1, 169), who passed for
more than 500 yards last season, is back, but Jenerette said
sophomore Hunter Windham (5-11,159) has made a strong
push for the starting spot.
“We’ve got two [quarterbacks] right now, but at Aynor
you better have three or four because we get a bunch of
people hurt for some reason. I reckon it’s ‘cause we aren’t
blocking too well,” Jenerette said.
The Blue Jackets will use an eight-man front on defense
that has seven starters back.
Aynor’s schedule starts with four Class A teams plus a trip
to Hilton Head Prep with an off week before beginning region
play against Dillon, the defending Class AA state champs.
“We’ve got five Class A teams to start off with. That
doesn’t mean anything. I just hope we can play a little better
than what we have in the past.”

➤ Coach | Jody Jenerette, sixth

overall)
➤ Last season | 1-9, missed
Class AA playoff spot
➤ Returning starters | 7
offense, 7 defense
➤ Base schemes | Double wing
offense, 46 defense (eight men
in the box)
➤ Strengths | A big, experienced
offensive line that can open up
holes for a group of quick ball
carriers who will try to advance
3-4 yards at a time and burn
the clock out of the double
wing.
➤ Weakness | The double wing
may be the great equalizer for
outmanned offenses, but simply
loading up the box on defense
in an eight-man front is easier
said than done against the
power ground games the Blue
Jackets will see in Region
VIII-AA.
➤ Outlook | A lighter early
schedule this season could
mean a couple more wins
overall, but with always
dangerous Dillon, a loaded Loris
team and strong, physical
teams in Marion, Mullins and
Waccamaw on the region slate,
the Blue Jackets will have a
tough time competing for a
playoff spot.
Blair Fleming will be part
of an Aynor backfield that
hopes to control the clock
by chipping away at field
position.

“I knew my first two years we were going to
get our heads beat in, to be very honest with
you, and we did. I thought last year we could
win five or six games and we
did. … We are kind of where
we were hoping to be,”
Longerbeam said.
A junior-laden team that
went 6-4 and narrowly
missed the playoffs in 2009
enters this season with 24
seniors, 20 juniors and high
Longerbeam expectations to rack up wins
and restore the Lions to the
limelight.
In addition to his most talented roster to
date, Longerbeam has a revamped coaching
staff that features holdovers Jack Jordan and
Gene Daughtery, former Coastal Carolina
offensive coordinator Jamie Snider, former
Chants Adrain Grady and Patrick Martin and
former Socastee standouts Jon Greene, who
played at CCU, and Terrance Butler, who
played at Presbyterian.

college players on his staff. “Some of the guys
have come from the same area our kids have

their degrees, now they are back, contributing, helping with the kids.”
At the heart of the Lions’ wing-T/spread
offense is returning quarterback Kentrez

and threw for 370 last season, and running

Longerbeam said he expects big things

Nonetheless, the Lions are loaded with
players who have been in the system for four
years and have players from solid middle
school and JV programs waiting in the wings.

➤ Coach | Jimmy Longerbeam, fourth year (10-20 at Loris; overall n/a)
➤ Last season | 6-4, tied for third in Region VIII-AA, did not make Class
AA playoffs via tiebreaker
➤ Returning starters | 11 offense, 9 defense
➤ Base scheme | Wing-T/spread offense, 4-4 defense
➤ Strengths | Perhaps no team in the area has as much experience as
the Lions – and as much pressure to perform. But with a complete
offense returning that features dangerous quarterback Kentrez Hilton,
All-Region VIII-AA running backs R.J. Brown and Denzel Strayhorne,
and offensive lineman Ethan Grainger, Loris is capable of putting up
points against some physical opposition.
➤ Weakness | Longerbeam’s biggest worry is depth. Though the team is
loaded with talented returning starters, it is not deep in terms of players
who can take over during injuries or to provide a break. A manageable early
schedule should present opportunities for backups to get some valuable
playing time. Another questionable area could be on the defensive line,
which will have to replace all-region performers Tyrone Grove and Ben Miller.
➤ Outlook | This is the season the Lions’ faithful have been longing for
and the pressure is on. Longerbeam and his team expect to win, and
can do it if they stay healthy. Loris might not be able to knock Dillon
from atop the Region VIII-AA ladder, but the Lions stand a solid

chance against the rest of the schedule and should be a playoff team
Loris quarterback Kentrez
that has the potential to make some noise.

WACCAMAW WARRIORS
H
➤ Coach | Tyronne Davis, first year (7-14 overall)
➤ Last season | 7-4, 3-2 Region VII-AA; third in region; lost to Cheraw
34-7 in first round of AA playoffs.
➤ Returning starters | 4 offense (2 WR, OT, C), 6 defense (2 LB, S, DT,
2 DE)
➤ Base schemes | Double wing offense; 4-4 defense
➤ Strengths | For as much running as Davis wants to do with his
offense, it seems he has some very capable pieces in place. That
starts, of course, with big offensive tackle Jerome Maybank, who has
committed to Clemson. The Warriors will look to run behind him as
often as possible. Handling the ball will be Nick Davis, a speedy
transfer from Palmetto Christian Academy in Charleston, Alex
Burdette, who started last year as a receiver, and promising
newcomer Jalen Simmons.
➤ Weaknesses | The Warriors have struggled to find a kicker – and it’s
not for lack of effort. The team held kicking auditions with the
school’s girls soccer team – which won the AA state championship
last year – in hopes of finding an answer to their kicking woes.
➤ Outlook | Waccamaw is looking to continue the progress made the
past few years under retired former coach Burney Bourne. After
struggling for much of the decade, the Warriors were a team on the
way up under Bourne. Davis believes he has the talent to sustain the
program’s newfound success – that is, if everybody stays healthy.
Depth could be an issue for this team, and embracing a new
offensive system always takes time to learn.

ead coach Tyronne Davis hasn’t been with the Waccamaw
football program long, but then again, he really didn’t need
much time to identify the strength of his new team.
Senior Jerome Maybank is hard to miss.
A skilled 6-foot-4, 320-pound offensive and
defensive tackle, Maybank has committed to play
for Clemson next year and is one of the more
high-profile players in the area this season.
Davis made it clear that Maybank will be the
focal point for a Warriors team looking to sustain
the progress made over the past few years under
former coach Burney Bourne, who retired after
last season.
“When you scout us, it’s going to be very easy
to see that we’re going to run behind Jerome 90
Tyronne
percent of the time. But the other percent, we’re
Davis
probably going to hand him the ball and line him
up in the backfield,” Davis said last week, eliciting
a few chuckles at a media luncheon for the CNB
Kickoff Classic.
There’s no doubt, though, that Maybank will be
a busy man for the Warriors this season.
“The only problem is that sometimes I think we
expect too much of him because the kid barely
comes off the field,” Davis said.
As for Davis, he comes to Waccamaw after two
Maybank
seasons as Georgetown’s head coach. He takes
over a program that has been on the rise in recent
years. The Warriors had won but one game from 2000-2003 before
Bourne took over. Their 7-4 finish last year was their best record of
the decade.
“I really have some big shoes to fill. Last year, coach Bourne
started something very special at Waccamaw High School,” said
Davis, who was an assistant for Bourne when both were at Cheraw.
The head coach won’t be the only difference for Waccamaw this
season.
With him, Davis brings a new offensive system. The team will
run the double wing.
Junior Nick Davis, a transfer from Palmetto Christian Academy
in Charleston, tops the depth chart at quarterback, while senior
Alex Burdette and freshman Jalen Simmons are also expected to
touch the football plenty.
On the other side of the ball, senior Tyler Bailey returns at linebacker to lead the defense, while fellow returning starter junior
Jaquon Rogers should be a key contributor at defensive end.
“Our biggest thing is just going out and competing and seeing if
we can get better each week,” Davis said. “With everyone healthy,
we could end up being a pretty good team barring no injuries. At
the same time, we’ve got to develop some depth.”

CARVERS BAY BEARS
THE SCOOP
➤ Coach | Nate Thompson, 11th year (96-30
at Carvers Bay and 107-40 overall)
➤ Last season | 10-2, 4-1 Region VIII-A,
second place in region, lost to Hemingway
13-6 in overtime in the second round of the
Class A Division I playoffs.
➤ Returning starters | 7 offense (QB, 2 RB,
4 OL), 9 defense (4 DL, 3 DB, 2 LB)
➤ Base schemes | Pro I offense, 52⁄5-3
defense
➤ Strengths | Experience and a noteworthy
coaching staff. Running backs coach Lanard
Stafford and secondary coach Matthew
Richard played at South Carolina, and
they’re joined by defensive coordinator
Quinn McCollum and second-year offensive
coordinator Dameon Franklin.
➤ Weaknesses | Lack of depth could be an
issue with a number of players starting and
playing on both sides of the ball, fueled by
declining enrollment numbers at the school.
➤ Outlook | The Bears have talented players
returning on both lines and in skill
positions, and should post another
impressive record and battle with 2009
region champion Hemingway for the region
title this season.

Expectations high for slimmer, trimmer Bears
BY ALAN BLONDIN

A
s good as a 10-2 season is for most programs, it can still be a disappointment
at Carvers Bay.
That’s the level of expectation that now envelops the Bears.
After three consecutive appearances in the
Class A Division I state championship game, it
was a letdown last year for the Bears when they
were knocked from the playoffs in the second round by
Hemingway in overtime.
“Here, some people feel
the bar is pretty high for 1-A
so it gets pretty tough. [Winning] is kind of expected of

Thompson, who has led the
Thompson
Bears to state titles in 2002
and 2006. “. . . When you’re
trying to get to state it’s hard work, and there’s
a little bit of luck involved, too. I don’t care how
strong and powerful you are, you have to have a
little bit of luck, too.”
Carvers Bay seems to be sufficiently reloaded to contend for a region and possibly state title this season with a lot of experience returning from last year’s team that lost only to a talented Hemingway team – 7-6 in the regular season in 13-6 in overtime in the playoffs.
The Bears won’t have the huge linemen
they’ve had in past years, but have four returning starters on both the offensive and defensive
lines, and have senior quarterback Desmond
Grate, and senior running backs Tevin Richard,
Tyquell Goss and Quae’Shawn Brockington to
work behind them.
“We’re not as big as we’ve been in the past,
but hopefully experience will take over,”
Thompson said. “These guys are a little bit
more slimmer and trimmer, but they move
faster.”
Part of the lack of size is the absence of a
Geathers family member on the team for the
first time in many years. Running back Clayton
Geathers moved on to Central Florida this year,
Kwame Geathers is a redshirt freshman lineman at Georgia and two other Geathers linemen are in the NFL.
“We ran out of Geathers. They’re gone,”
Thompson said. “That’s a great family. That
family helped put us on the map. There are
some more coming but they’re not on the

GREEN SEA FLOYDS TROJANS
New coach hopes commitment breeds confidence in Trojans

B
efore he could worry about game
plans or depth charts, new Green Sea
Floyds coach Joey Still had other
priorities to tackle in taking over a program
that has struggled both in players’ commitment to football at the school and consequently in its results on the
field.
So he worked the hallways, trying to convince
athletes from other sports
to give football a try. All the
while working the mindsets
of the players returning to
the program, making it
clear to everybody that
Still
expectations were changing - that they had to change.
“I think the kids are committed,” he said.
“They understand what I’m going to ask of
them, and it’s going to be a lot different.”
The Trojans finished 2-8 last season while
losing their final seven games.
But Still, who arrives after serving as the
head coach at Barnwell the last five seasons,
is focused on a different number.
“We have 36 kids dressing out on Friday
night,” he said last week in advance of the
CNB Kickoff Classic. “We opened camp with
36 kids, and we ended camp with 36 kids. And
I think that’s a great thing for our community.”
As for the team itself, seniors Tevin Jenerette and Lasan Reaves have some experience as running backs, while sophomore
Holden Clark projects as the starting
quarterback.
But as far as Still is concerned, this team
has no returning starters.
Everything starts anew this season.
The Trojans will introduce a wishbone
offense, simplified for the time being as the
players adjust to the new system.
Defensively, the team will employ a 3-3-5
stack and hopefully, with its youth and lack of
size, be creative enough in its approach to
catch teams off guard at times.
“We’re going to bring people from everywhere,” Still said. “We’re not just going to sit
back and play base defense.”
It’s a work in progress.
But while the team is sure to endure some
growing pains as it transitions into what Still
hopes will be a new era of Trojan football, he

Coach | Joey Still, first year (overall n/a)
Last season | 2-8, 0-6 Region VIII-A; last in region; missed playoffs
Returning starters | None
Base schemes | Wishbone offense; 3-3-5 stack defense
Strengths | Still is starting at the beginning with this program, so the
biggest thing he was looking for this offseason was a renewed
dedication from the players. He thinks a lack of commitment is what
has hindered the Trojans most in recent years, but he likes the way his
players have bought in so far.
➤ Weaknesses | While a couple players got some good experience last
year, Still said this team has no true returning starters. They are
starting fresh. Two things he quickly identified in assessing his team is
that his offensive line was going to need to be more aggressive in its
blocking, and the defense was going to have to be creative due to a
lack of size and experience.
➤ Outlook | Given the struggles of recent Trojan teams, the lack of
returning experience on the roster and having to get players up to
speed on new schemes, the learning curve looks to be steep for this
team. But Still doesn’t want to hinder expectations with any specific
goals. He believes turning around the mindset of the program was the
first step in moving it forward on the field.
