ABOUT SUBURBAN SPRAWL MUSIC
Suburban Sprawl Music is a Michigan-based label collective. Member
bands pool together their time and resources to support each other and
keep the label running. Our recent output includes the infectious,
energetic guitar pop of Those Transatlantics and The Pop Project, the
carnivalesque spectacles of Child Bite and the instrumental trio El Boxeo,
the angular, insistent indie rock of Javelins and The Recital, and the
moody virtuosity of Rescue. Suburban Sprawl Music has been called
“one of the state’s leading independent lights” (The State News, Lansing)
and was named the 2005 indie label of the year by Real Detroit Weekly.

Suburban Sprawl was begun in 1999 by Erik Koppin as a way to release
some of the great music that his friends were making. Early releases
include an EP and full-length by local faves Red Shirt Brigade, the debut
EP by indie darlings Thunderbirds Are Now! (Javelins drummer and
vocalist Matt Rickle performs double duty as the drummer for TAN!)
and two compilations of home recordings by Michigan bands including
Saturday Looks Good To Me, Judah Johnson and The Rants. Since 2002,
Suburban Sprawl has also released an annual holiday compilation;
contributors have included Canada, Windy and Carl, and The Hard Lessons.
A few years ago, Koppin handed over the label reins to Adam Kempa of
The Pop Project and The Recital. Along with fellow Pop Project member
Zach Curd, Kempa has since overseen the label, presiding over a robust
release schedule and extensive touring from the bands. Our label is made
up of people who feel incredibly passionate about each other’s music
and about bringing to the world another facet of Michigan’s legendary
music scene and history.
