What’s New in WinCross Version 13 WinCross 13 has been enhanced to include new features we hope you will find helpful and easy to understand. New Feature Highlights for Version 13: Express table setup for SPSS data New VAR+ feature for use with variable data Small sample size suppression and denotation Enhanced banner creation Enhanced charting options Compatibility with SPSS 21 Increased maximum for Run|Frequency Redesigned Run|Frequency sort and display options New row statistics New “drag and drop” capability for opening job and data files Constant percentages capability Quickly comment and uncomment lines of the job file New rank on a previous table feature Memorized report file editing Redesigned viewing and print format for Data File Information Report Log enhancements New “Incorrect Field Width Warning” message for SPSS data files ® 4 The Analytical Group, Inc. WinCross 13 What’s New 5 Express Table Setup for SPSS Data Setup|Express Tables for SPSS Data replaces File|New Job from SPSS File. WinCross now allows you to selectively create tables from variables in your SPSS data file or edit existing tables using Setup|Express Tables for SPSS Data. You no longer have to spend time creating a table for each variable in your data file and then use Setup|Tables to delete the unwanted tables. Express Tables for SPSS Data allows you to choose the variables you want to create tables for and gives you the option to create individual tables, one table with many rows, one table using net logic, a summary of means table or a summary of frequencies table. You still have the ability to create a table for each variable in the data file by selecting all of the variables and choosing the Create n Tables option. This option will create a table for each variable selected. A frequency report is displayed to help with determining if a table should be created for the selected variable. When choosing more than one variable, the frequency report reflects the last variable selected. The Analytical Group, Inc. WinCross 13 What’s New 6 Once tables are created, you can reorder, renumber, reindex, duplicate and format the new tables. You can also edit tables in the Job File definition window or select Edit to use the Table Editor tab for a more userfriendly table presentation. You can reorder, insert, delete, reverse, duplicate, net and subtotal rows for a table using the Table Editor tab. The Analytical Group, Inc. WinCross 13 What’s New 7 You can easily create USE tables for tables with similar structures using the Apply to Other Tables tab. See the WinCross online Help topic “Setup|Express Tables for SPSS Data” for more detailed information on using this feature. The Analytical Group, Inc. WinCross 13 What’s New 8 New VAR+ Feature for Use with Variable Data You can now use the VAR instruction to create Line tables. The VAR instruction can be used in place of the LOC instruction when using variable data files. The VAR instruction offers an easier way to reference a starting variable and then add a number that increments that variable for the next row or banner column. The VAR instruction skips variables rather than column locations and the variables do not have to be in sequential order. Let’s say our starting variable for row logic is Q1A. Then, VAR+1-3,5-6 would represent variables Q1A, Q1B, Q1C, Q1E and Q1F. See the WinCross online Help topics “Line Tables and the VAR Instruction” or “Line Table Examples for Variable Data using VAR+” for more detailed information about the new VAR+ feature. Small Sample Size Suppression and Denotation In Setup|Profile Settings and Setup|Job Settings you can specify options for suppressing cells and statistics based on limits you assign. You can choose the text to display in suppressed cells and whether to show a footnote about the suppressed display. See the WinCross online Help topics “Profile Settings|Small Sample Size” or “Job Settings|Small Sample Size” for more detailed information about Small sample size suppression. The Analytical Group, Inc. WinCross 13 What’s New 9 Enhanced Banner Creation Setup|Banners|Edit Banner has been enhanced with the following changes: 1. The banner editor now automatically wraps words when the characters entered exceed the width of the column. This makes it easier to enter banner text without concern for when “Enter” needs to be selected. 2. The banner editor now displays the spacing between columns that reflects the actual Spaces before each column entered on the Width and Spacing tab. 3. There are new multi-level Undo and Redo capabilities. All banner editing operations can be undone using the Undo option. Hovering over the Undo or Redo buttons displays a hint as to what effect the button will have if selected. You can now feel free to experiment with making changes knowing that any mistake can be easily corrected. 4. A selected cell can now be unmerged in a single operation. Previously, it took several successive commands using “Split cell right” to achieve the unmerging of a cell. 5. An intermittent problem with inverted banner text in the first column of the banner has been resolved. The Analytical Group, Inc. WinCross 13 What’s New 10 6. A new Autosize Underlines command has been added to the Cells menu options of the banner editor. This command makes it easy to automatically shorten or extend underlines in the banner to match the full width of a column. This is especially useful after adjustments to column widths have been made, columns have been deleted or when cells have been merged or unmerged. 7. You can now specify a Column divider character(s) up to 5 characters in length on the Width and Spacing tab. This character(s) will be visible in the Preview Banner dialog and on WinCross reports but cannot be displayed in the Banner Editor dialog box. The Analytical Group, Inc. WinCross 13 What’s New 11 8. Justification is now being applied at the cell level. Text is now always left-justified when entered in banner cells however, WinCross 13 makes it easy to highlight all of the cells and use the Cells menu options of Left Justify, Center Justify or Right Justify. You no longer have to enter leading or trailing spaces to center justify text in banner cells. 9. Columns can now be deleted even when the columns have merged cells on one or more rows of the banner. The text of the merged cells will be maintained even when the leftmost cell of the merged cells is being deleted. 10. You can now duplicate columns that have merged cells. 11. Columns selected for Comparison Groups are now labeled in a more readable way. This difference between WinCross 12 and WinCross 13 is most notable with complex banners. 12. The Remove Weights button now only removes weights from the selected columns. Previously, this option removed weights for all columns without regard to the current selection. 13. You can click once in a cell and drag the mouse to select multiple cells without having to click in that cell again. 14. Banners are now stored in the job file in a format that allows for most of the improvements in functionality using the Banner Editor. This format is useful for identifying merged cells and spaces between columns. This new format is only applied to banners that are edited and saved in WinCross 13 or new banners that are created in WinCross 13. See the WinCross online Help topics “How to create a new banner in WinCross” and “Edit Banner” for more information about creating and editing banners. The Analytical Group, Inc. WinCross 13 What’s New 12 Enhanced Charting Options Setup|Chart Content|Load Chart Content allows you to load a previously saved set of chart content preferences (*.wcc) and now you can choose which chart content element(s) to include. By omitting the selection of Data, you can easily reuse existing chart settings with a new data file. (The data file layout of the new data file must match the layout of the file used to create and save the Chart Content file.) See the WinCross online Help topic “Load Chart Content” for more information about this new feature. WinCross 13 now lets you run all of your tables and create charts for all tables–or for selected tables–using Setup|Chart Content. You can remove tables you aren’t interested in creating charts for using the Remove from Table List option, or you can create charts for selected tables by choosing the chart content options for those tables. WinCross will only list those tables for which charting content options were selected on the Run|Charts dialog box. Compatibility with SPSS 21 WinCross 13 is compatible with SPSS 21. For compatibility with WinCross, we recommend saving files in SPSS 21 using Locale (code page) encoding. The Analytical Group, Inc. WinCross 13 What’s New Increased Maximum for Run|Frequency The maximum number of variables/fields for running at one time has been increased to 1000. Redesigned Run|Frequency Sort and Display Options The Run|Frequency dialog box for variable type data has been redesigned to display more information about each variable. WinCross 13 now displays a helpful sequence number and the Variable Label. 13 The Analytical Group, Inc. WinCross 13 What’s New 14 The new Find a variable and Find Next options provide an easy way to search for a variable. This can be especially helpful when your data file has many variables. You can choose to display the Abbreviated variable name assigned by WinCross and whether or not words are wrapped for display of the Variable Label. You can now Show value labels for SPSS data on the Frequency report. See the WinCross online Help topic “Run|Frequency” for more information about running a frequency report. WinCross 13 What’s New The Analytical Group, Inc. 15 New Row Statistics st rd Row statistics of Minimum, Maximum, 1 Quartile, 3 Quartile, Mode and Percentiles (0-99) are now available at the row level using Setup|Tables|Row Options. New “Drag and Drop” Capability for Opening Job and Data Files As an alternative to selecting File|Open|Open Data, you can drag a data file from another location and drop it in WinCross. WinCross will launch the Open Data dialog box with the file path pre-filled in the Data file field. The Drive and Directory will point to the file path and the File type selected will match the file type of the data file when possible. As an alternative to File|Open|Open Job, you can drag a job file (*.job) from another location and drop it in WinCross. WinCross will open the job file and launch View|Job File to display the open job file. See the WinCross online Help topics “Open job” or “Open data” for more detailed information about opening job and data files. The Analytical Group, Inc. WinCross 13 What’s New 16 Constant Percentages Capability Constant (also referred to as “corner”) percentages can now be calculated and displayed in WinCross 13. The new table option of Constant percent can be selected on the Table Options dialog box. You will specify the Constant value or the Banner column and Row (Total, Total Answering, Sigma or Table Filter Row) intersection using the Horizontal/Constant Percents tab of Setup|Banners|Edit Banner. When specifying the intersection of a Banner column and Row, you can select the Total, Total Answering or Sigma filter rows or choose the Table Filter Row of each table. Using the Table Filter Row of each table is especially useful when your tables are not all based the same. See the WinCross online Help topic “Horizontal/Constant Percents tab (Edit Banner)” for more information about this new option. The Analytical Group, Inc. WinCross 13 What’s New 17 Quickly Comment and Uncomment Lines of the Job File Commenting and uncommenting lines in the job file is faster and easier in WinCross 13. You select the lines for commenting or uncommenting then right-click and choose the appropriate option, Comment Lines or Uncomment Lines. Choosing Comment Lines inserts a “C” in the first column of all selected lines of the job file. Uncomment Lines removes the “C” in the first column of all selected lines of the job file. Note: The Comment Lines option for lines in the Glossary section of the job file will add an asterisk “*” in column 2. The Glossary section of the job file uses an asterisk (*) as the comment character in the second position of the line. The Uncomment Lines option for lines in the Glossary section of the job file will remove the asterisk “*” in column 2. The Analytical Group, Inc. WinCross 13 What’s New 18 New Rank on a Previous Table Feature You can now rank a table the same as a previous table. Both tables need to have similar structures as well as the same number of rows. Row text can be different from table to table. Rows are ranked in the same row number order as the previous table regardless of row text, so it is important to choose the appropriate table. See the WinCross online Help topic “Table Options” for more information about Ranking options. The Analytical Group, Inc. WinCross 13 What’s New 19 Memorized Report File Editing Run|Memorized Reports|View Report File is now Run|Memorized Reports|Edit Report File. The Edit option of Run|Memorized Reports|Edit Report File allows you to view and make changes to your Memorized Report file (*.wmr). You can use the File, Edit and Search menu options for help with editing your Memorized Report file. See the WinCross online Help topic “Edit Report (Memorized Reports)” for more information about this new feature. The Analytical Group, Inc. WinCross 13 What’s New 20 Redesigned Viewing and Print Format for Data File Information The View|Data File Information for variable data has been redesigned for viewing and printing. The data file information display now includes a Variable Sequence Number, the Location:Width of the variable, the WinCross Abbreviated Variable Name and the original Variable Name and Variable Label from the data file. Print|Data File Information now lets you choose the pages to print and the number of copies. Data File Information for a variable type data file will print in a new easy-to-read grid format. The Analytical Group, Inc. WinCross 13 What’s New 21 Report Log Enhancements The WinCross Report Log has been enhanced for easier identification of warnings and errors. Warning messages begin with WARNING: and are color-coded in blue. Error messages begin with ERROR: and are color-coded in red. Search tools are provided at the top of the Report Log for help in locating specific warnings, errors or text values. See the WinCross online Help topic “View|Report Log” for more information about these enhancements. The Analytical Group, Inc. WinCross 13 What’s New 22 New “Incorrect Field Width Warning” message for SPSS data files When WinCross encounters a data value that is wider than the declared width of the variable when opening an SPSS data file, a new “Incorrect Field Width Warning” message is issued denoting the Variable name, Variable width, Data value and Data width with an explanation of how WinCross will handle this. WinCross will only display this message once per variable and will display the Data value of the first record for the denoted variable with the width discrepancy. You are given the option to display this warning message again if other variables in this file have the same problem or to ignore other variables with the same problem. To avoid receiving these warning messages each time you open the SPSS data file, we recommend increasing the width of the variable in the original data file if possible. The Analytical Group, Inc. WinCross 13 What’s New 23 Other Changes for WinCross 13 File|New Job from SPSS File has been replaced with Setup|Express Tables for SPSS Data. Find and Find Next options in the Search menu are now enabled for searching variable type data files (i.e. SPSS, Excel, etc.). Setup|Tables|Table Number replaces double-clicking on a table in the table list. Setup|Globally Modify|Table Options/Table Statistics/Table Filters now displays the Table Title with the Table No. Help|Getting Started is a new option for access to the WinCross 13 Getting Started PDF. Help|Video Tutorials is a new option for access to helpful video tutorials on new and existing features. Enhanced Text Reports now saves background image and job logo when exporting to other formats (.rtf, .pdf, etc.). The maximum for variable/field and code value combinations in Sample Balancing has been increased to 50 million.
