Christmas Celebrations
of Yesteryear

How did the citizens of
Honey
Grove
celebrate
Christmas around the 1900s?
Our collection of old Honey
Grove newspapers, now online
at the Portal to Texas History,
tells us.
In 1894 there was to be an
"old fashioned Christmas tree at
the Methodist Church." There
was to be Christmas entertainment at the Baptist for the children, and on Sunday a special
offering for Buckner's Orphan
home.
In 1902 the children of the
Christian Sunday school were
presenting a "pretty cantata, A
Visit to Grandpa," on Christmas
eve. After the entertainment
there was to be a distribution of
presents at the Christmas tree.
In 1905 the Ladies' Society
of the Presbyterian Church had
to postpone their holiday bazaar
because of inclement weather,
but would have "many pretty
and useful articles appropriate
for Christmas presents."
J. B. McKee offered the following special groceries in
1905: navel oranges, cranberries, celery, English walnuts,
mince meats, nuts of all kinds,
fancy white grapes, and fancy
cakes and crackers.
In 1906 the Shakespeare
Club had a Christmas party at
the Williamson home, which
was decorated with Christmas
bells, holly wreaths and mistle-
toe boughs.
In 1910 Foster Photo, of
Honey Grove and Bonham, was
ready to take the family
Christmas photo. And the City
Council instructed the City
Marshal to enforce the fire
works ordinance to the letter of
the law. "There is a way in
which those who get enjoyment
out of shooting fire works can
have
their
accustomed
Christmas fun, but they must not
in so doing endanger life or
property. Ask the Marshall
about the provision of the law."
Also in 1910 there was to be
"a beautiful Christmas tree at
the Methodist School at the
brick school building, ladened
with nice presents for the
Sunday School children, also a
delightful Cantata entitled
"Christmas Eve at Grandpa's."
And the Christian Church was
having special services on
Christmas Day, both morning
and evening, with special music
by the choir and solos. The
Sunday School Christmas tree
was on Christmas eve.
Christmas trees were also being
held at the Episcopal church, the
Presbyterian Church and the
Baptist church.
The
Honey
Grove

Christmas Shopping in Old
Honey Grove
PJC Holds Second
Fall Graduation

What types of Christmas
gifts were popular around the
1900s in Honey Grove? Our
collection of old Honey Grove
newspapers, now online at the
Portal to Texas History, tells us.
In 1894 S. L. Erwin & Co.
recommended Haviland China
and Libbey Cut Glass as a present. In 1897 W. L. Erwin advertised that his store would be
open until 9:30 in the evening
for Christmas shopping.
In the December 12, 1902
edition of the Honey Grove
Signal, The Nickel Store had a
large front page ad for its
Christmas items. They advertised that they had over 1000
dolls (all sizes and all prices) for
sale, plus doll clothes and carriages. For the boys they advertised wagons of all kinds, toy
guns, trains and building blocks.
They carried a complete line of
games, "crokinole, dominoes,
checkers, ping pong, tug of war,
authors, old maid, progression
and diplomacy." They also had
"the best line of fireworks in
town."
Burke and & Burke in 1902
advertised
itself
as
"Headquarters for Santa Claus."
They offered toy trains, toy
printing presses, toy steam
engines, toy guns, and dolls,
including rag dolls. They also

books for all ages, and games
and blocks.
Murray & Evans, on the East
Side of the Square, had a large
stock of diamonds, jewelry, cut
glass and silverware.
Wright Book Company
offered "dolls, dishes and furniture for the girls. Guns, trains,
fire engines and fire works for
the boys. Games for Old and
Young." They had chocolates
for the young ladies, bricabrac
and fancy cups and tea sets, and
shaving mugs and mustache
cups.
J. N. Lempeotis, northeast
corner of the Square, advertised
candies and cigars.
And Williamson, Blocker &
Co. recommended neckware,
suspenders and mufflers.
In 1905 Murray & Evans
suggested, for the gentlemen,
watch chains, goldheaded canes
and a handsome tobacco jar.
For the ladies, a cut glass vase, a
gold thimble and a sterling silver hat pin. For the baby, a
comb and brush set or a sterling
silver rattle.
Maybe these ideas will help

Ancel Yarbrough
Retires from US Air Force
Air Force Colonel Ancel B.
Yarbrough II has retired from
the U.S. Air Force after serving
honorably for over 26 years.
His last position was Director of
Operations, United States Air
Forces Central Command,
Shaw Air Force Base, South
Carolina, where he provided
oversight of Air Force activities
and operations throughout the
Middle East.
Yarbrough is the son of Mary
Pauline Yarbrough of Honey
Grove and the late Colonel
(U.S. Army, retired) Jim
Yarbrough.
He currently
resides in Sumter South
Carolina with his wife, Mary B.
Yarbrough and their three children, Lauren, Aubrie and Brock.
Ancel is a 1984 graduate of
Honey Grove High School. He
earned a bachelor's of science
degree
in
Aeronautical
Engineering in 1988 from the
United States Air Force
Academy, Colorado Springs,
Colorado.
Upon graduation from the
Academy he was commissioned
in the U.S. Air Force and
attended pilot training, going on
to become an accomplished
fighter pilot and senior leader
during his years of service spanning four continents. He is a
veteran of numerous campaigns
including those conducted in
Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya and the
Balkans.

to graduate from Paris Junior
College in the fall semester, and
more than half applied to walk
across the stage Friday evening,
Dec. 12.
After the processional
entered the Hunt Center,
Student
Government
Association president Lauren
Jeans gave the invocation.

Katharine Wiebe performed,
"You'll Never Walk Alone."
As part of the ceremony, PJC
President Dr. Pamela Anglin
told the packed crowd that PJC
had just celebrated its 90th
Homecoming and continued the
tradition of celebrating distinguished alumni.
"Tonight we acknowledge
that there are graduates who
may be future honorees and we
challenge and encourage you to
achieve your goals and use your
abilities to reach your dream,"
Dr. Anglin said.
Afterwards, a reception was
held for graduates and their
family and friends.

The Honey Grove VFW has just made several announcements
of upcoming happenings: APA POOL LEAGUE, every Monday
night. The veterans and members are now accepting food for
holiday meal donations for veterans and their families. Please
bring any non-perishable food items to the clubhouse.
January 7, 2015 will be the annual meeting of the Friends of the
Bertha Voyer Memorial Library. 4:00 at the Library. Election of
officers and planning for the coming year.
Has anyone shot a deer this year that they might like to share
with all the Weekly Gazette readers?

On December 18th, the Honey Grove Elementary will be hosting their annual Christmas Program at 6:00. Each grade level will
be singing Christmas Carols. This is always a special occasion and
everyone is invited and encouraged to come watch the children!
Community Christmas Concert.. COME ONE COME ALL!!!!
The BONHAM COMMUNITY BAND and the BONHAM BIG
BAND EXPRESS will be performing their last concert of the year
on Saturday December 20th at 7 PM in the Armory, (Bonham
CivicCenter) 1100W. 5th. This is the second and BIGGER
CHRISTMAS CONCERT than the bands played on December 6th.
New songs and additional players have been added for this
CHRISTMAS TREAT. Richard Knabe, band director at Whiteright
High School will be directing the Community band in the place of
Mr. Monte Ashcraft who could not make this date. As always there
will be FREE refreshments served at intermission. The concert will
start at 7pm.. Wear something festive. See y'all there.

The Fannindel 6th grade UIL academic students
attended the UIL meet at Ector last Tuesday and
Wednesday. Results are as follows:

The Fannindel 8th grade participated in the UIL
Academic meet at Savoy this past Tuesday and
Wednesday against 7 other district schools. Individual

The parade through Ladonia
Saturday afternoon brightened
the day for spectators, as the
participants were having fun as
they rode horses, drove vehicles
pulling floats, or walked from
Fannindel School past the
square and on down East Main,
making the loop and returning
by way of East Paris and
Bonham Streets. Christmas is
supposed to be a cause for joy as
we celebrate the birth of our
Lord and Savior. About midway of the procession two students, Paula Moody and Bailey
Duplechan, led two beautiful
goats trimmed with red bows.
The community was working
together and neighboring towns,
Wolfe City and Pecan Gap participated also. Thanks to the
Chamber of Commerce, the Fire
Department and all others who
helped, and Ho, Ho, Ho Santa
Claus.
Cleo Edlin was elated to hear
the news during Thanksgiving
that she is due to become a
great-great grandmother in
April. Her great granddaughter,
Amy Rose Wood and her husband are expecting their first

On Sunday Deona Owens
and Elaine Owens were at Mt.
Olive Baptist Church in Reno,
Texas for an ordination of deacons. Deona’s grandson and
Elaine’s nephew, Marc McNeal,
was ordained a deacon in the
Church. They are very proud of
Marc and so are we all.
The shrubs at First Baptist
Ladonia look so much better
since being trimmed by Debby
Crofford last week. Thank you
so much Debby.
First Baptist is happy to have
Pastor David Howard, his wife

Shaw stuff. Great granddaughters are going into the
Christmas season in a big way.
Up in Tennessee, Mary is moving into her new home. At
Commerce, Madison and
Savannah are competing in UIL
and playing basketball. The
Middle School came in third in
the One-Act Play competition
with Savannah being one of the
two from Commerce to be
named to the All-Star cast. For
many years, young people of
Fellowship Baptist Church in
Campbell, have presented a
Christmas play and all five of
the Certain grandchildren (two
of whom are my greats) act in it.
In fact, the girls usually make
up the program themselves with
the help of their mothers,
Cherish and Mandy, grandmother Cathy Certain and their
grandfather Steve reading the
Christmas Story at the end. This
year they depicted the story of
Ebenezer Scrooge. The program
is always relevant to the meaning of Christmas. Each year I
have played hooky from my
Church here in Ladonia to be
there for the play. I was sorry to
miss this year, but with each
passing year one has to curtail
more activities. Carol Shaw
drove down from Garland, as
she does for their plays and
when possible also attends one
of the three types of ball games
they play in. Grandsons Travis
and Blake traveled in their
work, Travis to Houston from
his home in Tennessee and
Blake to San Antonio from his
home in Commerce. Melanie
Shaw and daughter Mitzi Gill
brought lunch and visited a
while before going to the cemetery to put out flowers. They
brought a huge stocking full of
goodies which included a small
can of Tundra First Alert to
extinguish small fires. That goes
with me wherever I go in the
house. Tina Shaw attended the
Chrismas pageant at Plymouth
Park Baptist Church in Irving.
We do not wish you happy

Holiday 2014 Don't Drink & Drive Campaign
This year, TxDOT, Santa, and Santa's reindeer have an
important message for Texas drivers: Don't drive if you're
Tipsy, Buzzed or "Blitzen"; call a cab or get a sober ride
home instead. For the 16th consecutive year, TxDOT is
sponsoring a holiday-themed public education campaign to remind Texans not to get behind the wheel if
they've been drinking.
From December 1st until January 1st, which includes
the Christmas and New Year's holidays, Santa is not the
only one who'll be busy. Law enforcement agencies will
be making an extra effort to spot-and stop-drunk drivers.
In Texas during December 2012, more than 37,000 traffic crashes injured 18,000 people and killed 240 more.
Of the 3,089 fatalities on Texas roads in 2009, 956 were
the result of alcohol-related crashes. This makes alcohol
a factor in 30.9 percent of the fatal crashes in Texas .
Penalties for a first-time DWI offense include driver's
license suspension for up to one year, a fine of up to
$2,000 and up to six months in jail.
Santa's other helpers in the DWI-prevention campaign include the Texas Restaurant Association, Texas
Petroleum Marketers and Convenience Store
Association, Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission and
Texas Department of Public Safety.
A drunk driving arrest, a car crash, or a trip to the emergency room is definitely not on anyone's wish list! Our
wish list includes a safe holiday season for everyone. We
are reminding drivers to celebrate responsibly and let
someone else drive if they have been drinking. Our
advice is simple: Designate a sober driver in advance or
call a cab to get home safely.

In the beginning words of
John’s Gospel we find, “In the
beginning was the Word, and
the word was with God, and the
Word was God. He was in the
beginning with God. All things
came into being through him,
and without him not one thing
came into being.”
What do we celebrate at
Christmas? Of course, the
answer is obvious, even trite—
the birth of Jesus Christ, the
Savior of the World. But what
do we celebrate at Christmas,
what does the birth of Christ
mean? Consider the familiar
story from Luke’s gospel. We
know it well. The images are
fixed in our memories, down to
the marrow of our bones, the
crude stable, the angels, the
shepherds. Indeed, so familiar
to us is the story that sometimes
it becomes difficult to hear it
afresh. Luke’s nativity story is
as comfortable to us as our
favorite pajamas or sweater, as
familiar to us as the back of our
hand.
In John Gospel we consider
the Christmas message from a
different perspective. It is a different gospel, but it too is familiar to us. Its words and images
flow over us, surround us. Their
beauty and brilliance have been
dimmed as well by our repeated
hearing of them. What new
thing can we say about
Christmas? What new or
renewed faith, what transformation can come about in the midst

of such old familiar
stories and words?
In fact, that’s one of
the problems with rituals. Human beings
are by nature, ritualistic. Ritual takes us out
of ourselves and out
of our daily lives.
Ritual draws us in,
brings us into the
presence of eternity.
We like things to stay
the same. We are comfortable
with routine. We think things
have always worked this way,
that, for example, Christmas has
always been celebrated in the
way we do it today. Of course,
that’s not true. We know
approximately when Christians
began celebrating the incarnation of Christ—it was probably
in the fourth century. We know
by whom and when the first
crèche—the first nativity
scene—was erected: by St.
Francis of Assisi in the thirteenth century. We know that
Christmas was not celebrated in
colonial New England, that
Santa Claus came on the scene
in the mid-19th century, that
“White
Christmas”
and
“Rudolph the Red-Nosed
Reindeer” date from the 1940s.
We know all this, but when
somebody messes with it, we
get mad. All of that accumulated
tradition combines to make
Christmas an evocative and
powerful event.
Yet all that familiarity, all the
ritual does something else, too.
It prevents us from encountering the gospel anew, it keeps us
from hearing the words of Luke
or of John with open hearts and
minds, open to the possibility
that Christmas, besides being
the “most wonderful time of the
year,” that Christmas might
transform us, and transform the
world.

God, and the Word was God. He
was in the beginning with God.
All things came into being
through him, and without him
not one thing came into being.”
The profound and mysterious
hymn with which the Gospel of
John begins makes some extravagant claims about Christ. What
is proclaimed in these words is
that Christ, the Word, has been
present in the world since creation, indeed that the Word was
itself the creative process
through which the world, and
we, were created.
There’s something of an
irony here. At Christmas we celebrate the birth of Christ, the
coming of Christ into the world,
but John begins by asserting
that Christ has been present in
the world from the very beginning of creation. The problem,
of course, is that we don’t get it.
We don’t recognize Christ’s
presence among us, in us.
In the beginning was the
Word… There are few texts of
scripture on which Christians
have thought and reflected than
the opening verses of John’s
gospel. The English translation
captures only a small portion of
all that lies in the Greek word
logos that connotes as well, reason, natural law, the order of the
universe. And behind the Greek
lies the Hebrew concept of wisdom—the idea expressed in the
Old Testament that it was
through wisdom that God created the universe.
These rich words convey to
us something of the faith of the
early Christians who confessed
them and sang them in worship,
but the profundity of what they
confessed elude our grasp. What
might it mean for our faith not
just to confess, but to believe
that in creation in this world
around us, we see the presence
of God, we detect Christ?
We live in a world that loves
to compartmentalize and to crit-

is Christmas, that, well, that is
the rest of the year. We tie things
up in neat packages, even
though life resists such neat categorization. We want things
neat and tidy, but life is messy.
On Christmas, we want to hear
the old familiar story, to sing the
carols, to go home and have a
nice
Christmas
dinner,
exchange presents, and tomorrow wake up, and get back to
business as usual.
What we don’t want, not
really, is to encounter Christ. Oh
yes, we love the baby in the
manger, we love the story of
Mary and Joseph, of shepherds
and angels, we love the warm
fuzzy feelings that Christmas is
so good at providing. We want
Christ on our terms, not on
God’s terms.
John’s gospel reminds us that
Christmas is not just about all of
that. John proclaims to us loudly and powerfully that the Christ
who was born in Bethlehem is
the Incarnate Word, present in
all the universe, present in all
our words, present in us.
Christ comes to us, of course,
as the little baby in a manger in
Bethlehem. But our faith also
proclaims that Christ is present
all around us, even when we fail
to recognize Him. Christ is
where we are. He is in the
places of Worship, but he is in
the Marketplace too. He is in
our hearts, in the smile of a
child and in the greeting of a
friend, in the family gathering.
Christ is present, too, in the
poor, the homeless, the destitute. May the spirit of Christmas
infect us and transform us, that
we see Christ in all that we do,
in everyone we meet, in our
neighbor, and yes, in our enemy,
too.

I hope the reindeer are safe. I
need a toolbox because my dads

help my dad fix it. I want some
skate shoes. I am going to leave
you cookies and milk.

What Makes a Piland... a Piland

and never knew his ancestors
personally.
Grampa had married the
former Myrtle Gray. Their union
produced eight offspring – five
sons and three daughters.
Grampa was a farmer as were his
ancestors.
In Grampa and Grannies
house the family Bible occupied
a prominent place. It was not a
book that they brought out and
dusted off just when the Preacher
was coming to dinner. There
were family meetings to read and
discuss the Bible. The family
was given a verse or chapter to
read, then the next week, give
their impressions on what was
read. Grampa studied it daily.
What he came away with was
that there was no
middle
ground, an action was either right
or it was wrong. There was black
or white, there was no grey.

Grampa got in touch with a neighbor
who owned a hay baler. They got together
and agreed on a day, weather permitting, for
the neighbor to bale the hay. Grampa would
have the hay cut, raked and dry. The neighbor would show up and bale the hay. The
trade was Grampa got two thirds and the
neighbor got one third, which was common
practice back then.
Hay bailing day arrived and so did the
neighbor. But before he started he wanted
to change the agreement to half and half.
He told Grampa that no other hay balers
were available. Grampa explained that was
not what they agreed to. The neighbor told
Grampa that was the way it would be.
Grampa told him he needed to get his
equipment out of the field, he asked why,
Grampa said he would burn the field before
he would be taken advantage of. The neighbor told him, “Alfred, you would not DO
that, you and I both NEED that hay.”
Grampa asked him to go back to the original agreement, the neighbor refused.
Grampa smoked Prince Albert tobacco –
roll your owns. If you have ever smoked
Prince Albert, you know that it takes three
to four matches per cigarette. Grampa had
a special pocket in his bib overalls that he
filled with matches every morning. He
started walking and striking matches and
dropping them in the wind rows.
In a short time the field was black and
smoking.
Carl called me Ironhead…should have
been Ironhead the Third.

Post Office for several years and
he will be retiring soon. Brad
will be missed greatly, as he has
been a great Postmaster and is
loved by all the people in this

and friend Marty, Terri Sandlin,
Jennifer Sandlin, and Nelda
Campbell to the wonderful
'Christmas in the Camp' which
took place at the Red River
Bible Camp Cowboy Church
which is located north of Reno
and close to Paris. Christmas in
the Camp portrays the
Christmas story and is played
out in eight live scenes with
people, horses, sheep, goats, etc.
Visitors ride in horse-drawn
wagon tours through the woods
viewing the eight scenes and the
tour last approximately 20 to 25
minutes. Billy Merritt, grandson of Nelda Campbell, plays
one of the young shepherds.
The Camp ended on Saturday
night. If you have not seen it,

Lois Amundson and Bob
Cadenhead enjoyed a Christmas
brunch at the A&M University
president's home Sunday in
Commerce. The university does
this every year for retired faculty and staff. Lois worked there
back in the 80's.
Terry Haneke celebrated her
birthday Friday with lunch at
Landons in Greenville. Helping
her celebrate were her husband
George, her sister Patricia Riley,
and friends Helen and Jerry
Park, Wanda Jouett, Karen
