June, 2011 - the Corinthian Yacht Club!
June 2011 EDITOR: P. J. HAJOS cottage will be in place before the end of the season. The septic system is also ready to go but for one or two estimates from contractors to the County. Keeping fingers crossed that we will soon be under construction on that project as well. From the Commodore’s Bridge So we got the season off to a good start. A few potential members have visited with us over the past few weeks who would make outstanding contributions to our membership and our club. We will also be putting an ad in the St. Mary’s River Concert program and offering our initiation fee discounts in July, August and October. If you see potential members around the club please give them a warm Corinthian welcome and make them feel at home. Be sure to show them why you joined. Looking forward to seeing all of you at the club this Summer. A hoy Corinthians! The pool is open. The Flags have been hoisted to cannon fire and appropriate music and the official start of the Ridge yachting season is underway. Many thanks to our Vice Commodore, Paula Hajos, and Rear Commodore David Fuchs for organizing and conducting a very thoughtful and fun event. Thanks also to P/C Warren Harper for acting as our Master of Ceremony and to P/C Earl Waesche for delivery of the benediction. Also thanks to our Fleet Captain, Jean Hannah, for arranging for Father John Ball from Trinity Episcopal Church to bless our fine fleet. Finally thanks to the Ridge American Legion Post and Martin Russell for the excellent job conducting the raising of the flags. Jim Tapp, Vice Commodore 703-937-7414 [email protected] CYC Membership Meeting June 25th @ 10:30 a.m. Tex-Mex/Pina Event - see Flyer Ridge, MD During the ceremony, I recognized the past commodores that were present lead by John Krisko. The past commodores in turn awarded a 48 star United States flag that had flown over the old club in Washington, DC to Martin in recognition of his 50 years of raising the flag at the Ridge location. I also recognized the veterans that were present and in particular one that was not with us this year, Fran Krilich. As you know Fran, who was very active in our club and the local community, passed away in May. Fran was a decorated Army Colonel who advised President Eisenhower and served honorably in Europe, the US and Vietnam. She will be missed. Around the Grounds halyard on the Flag Pole was repaired, and TheMartin Russell once again has the flags flying. Lots of stuff going around on campus: C Dock roof project is underway, as is the roof repair to Cottage 2 and the updating of the wireless infrastructure. Thanks to our Treasurer, Don Foster, we are about to close on our loan with PNC Bank and are ready to put the new Cottage 6 on order. With any luck both will occur before the end of the month and the new Additional maintenance items accomplished include: - Ray Mercure fixed the pipe that was leaking on the outside of the club house kitchen wall. -1- - Ray replaced a piece of siding on the club house. - The window facing A dock, was repaired - The window in the attic facing the water fell out. The window frame is in bad shape; Geoff Baumann will repair the frame. There is an ongoing investigation in regards the attic ventilation. - The C Dock repairs are underway. - Phil Deming is now Pool Certified, even though he is not a local resident, in a pinch, he should be able to help with the Pool. Ray also plans on getting his certification in the future. - The water line was repaired so the Boat washing station is now open. Please avoid driving across the center of the field where the water line is run. This could include backing your trailer boats into their spaces rather than “pulling through.” - Jeff Thompson, of Colonial Woodwrights, is working on the back side of Cottage 2 and the associated restrooms. The roof will be changed to a sloped roof, vs. the current flat roof. Cottage 2 will be re-shingled and then we will start on updating the bathrooms - The grounds committee will be trimming the shrubs and trees soon. I believe, overall, our club looks really nice and I am extending a big Thanks, to Martin Russell, Scott Russell, Ray Mercure, Geoff Baumann, Darrell Derrington, Dick Houchen, Chuck O'Brien, Ron and Judy Ryland, and all CYC members who have generously helped in "Getting ‘Er Done". #255 did their very professional job as color guard, Paul Altman fired the cannon and Commodore Tapp paid tribute to Fran Krilich , her wonderful career achievements and the fact that we will all miss her He and the other past commodores also made a special notation honoring Martin Russell for raising our flag at this event for 50 years (well done Martin!) And last but not least , we were especially honored by Jim Krilich who wore his dress Army uniform to the event, (outstanding Jim!). The May 28th “Sinatra” event was hosted by “Chef Geoff” Baumann our master grill chef. His team included Dick and Kathy Houchen, who were responsible for the Green Beans, Fruit Salad, Baked Potatoes, and the fabulous desserts (pineapple upside down cake, key lime pie and two ice cream cakeshomemade). Paula Hajos led a team of impromptu helpers to deliver broccoli with hollandaise as well as the appetizers (those cucumber sandwiches were excellent!). This team effort was a huge success and demonstrated CYC’s “can do” attitude and teamwork. The bar opened at 5 pm with Jean Hannah and Dave Fuchs bartending. Around 6 PM we got news from Chef Geoff that dinner would be “delayed” as he was having difficulties keeping the coals going (seems our large grill is in need of some re-welding to fix some corrosion). He had approx. 45 half chickens on the grill and when they finally got cooking, the juices started to put out the Fire. At the same time the hickory chips started drying out, and added to the flame and saved the fire. Additional charcoal and shuffling chickens around the grill finally produced some wonderful grilled chicken (definitely worth the wait). A big “THANK YOU” to all who helped with the adjusted timeline and cooking and serving duties (including, but not limited to Dolores Derrington, Helena Licata, Edlu & Warren Harper, Margaret Tolzman, and Elizabeth Reisman. Mary & George Niebuhr helped with the record keeping during the Auction and Phil Deming, doubled as both Auctioneer and “Vanna”. Home 301 937-4437 Cell 240 432-5504 [email protected] CYC Events Meanwhile, returning entertainment, John Schneider was in the Bean Room, entertaining with Sinatra tunes and easy listening dinner music. Since dinner was going to be late, we started the Auction. A big THANK YOU to each member who made a donation to the auction and all the auction winners. We T he Flag raising…….The ceremony went off nicely, beautiful weather , Warren Harper was our MC , (thank you Warren ) the American Legion -2- staggered arrivals/departures of the boats. Not to worry, those arriving first just had the opportunity for an extra beverage or two. A fun time was had by all. Sea Witch had a bit of a problem with an engine overheating and took a leisurely pace back, arriving at 7:00 pm in time for a sunset swim in the newly opened CYC pool. had some surprise Corinthian friends join us for dinner, Marion and Doug from the Krentz Marina/Boatyard at Harry Hogan. They were particularly generous and donated a boat bottom cleaning and painting. Don and Gloria Austring are the lucky beneficiaries of this wonderful donation. The complete list of auction items and winners are listed at the end of the newsletter. A big thanks goes out to all those who lent a helping hand to support the success of this event, your help was truly appreciated. Mary Niebuhr won $123.00 from the 50/50 drawing and donated it back to the Heritage fund. Sadie and Michaela Weis worked as the Corinthian clean-up crew, and once again, we appreciate their tireless efforts – it is a lot of dishes, silverware, glasses, pots and pans to clean up for 60 people. The next event is participation in the PRYCA sponsored cruise to Cobb Island on the weekend of June 17th-19th. Please email me if you plan to attend but make your dock reservations directly through the PRYCA website. Also, a reminder that the Coast Guard Auxiliary will be available on Sat., June 25 to perform safety checks at CYC after the membership meeting. Please email me if you wish to participate so that I can provide them with an estimated number. Our next event “Tex-Mex-Pina” is June 25th, hosted by Edith Mims and Phil Deming. Edith is a Filipina and the cuisine includes some of her specialties. Phil hired a fantastic band, Luz de America and he will be covering most of their costs. Last year the same band had the whole room on the dance floor. Cerro Grande, from Lexington Park, will cater this event. Please respond early to the evite or use the form at the end of the newsletter. Membership Home 301 743 5558 Cell 240 222 2359 [email protected] wk [email protected] 115 Jenkins Drive Indian Head, MD 20640 I n our efforts to get the word out about our wonderful club, the membership committee (thank you to George and Mary Niebuhr), arranged to submit an ad into the Summer Concert Series Program for St. Mary’s City. This is a popular, local event, and one ad works for the entire summer in a nice color brochure that is distributed to each concert on Friday evening. Our web site (and proximity to Woodlawn B&B) is yielding some interest from at least one couple who visited the club on the 28th. Cruising Schedule I updated the one-page flyer that can be posted on bulletin boards in local establishments. I will also have the file sent in email so anyone who wants to print and post one can do so. I handed out all the copies I had at our recent meeting, and will try to be sure I have more with me at every meeting. C YC was well represented at the Shake Down Cruise to Fitzie's Restaurant in Leonardtown on Sunday, May 29th with 3 boats and 22 people participating (can you say “boat pooling?”). Captain Phil Deming on the bridge of Brigantine, Captain Paul Altman aboard Facilitator, and Captain Geoff Baughman on the bridge of Sea Witch ferried members and their guests to the brunch and safely back to CYC. The event spanned several hours given the We are discussing whether to have a booth at the Annapolis Boat Show in October. If you have an opinion one way or the other, please let me know. If you are willing to assist, let me know that as well. -3- Suggestions regarding other possible boat shows are under consideration as well (e.g., Washington, Chantilly, Kent Narrows). If you know of a good venue where we can “get the word out”, please let me know and forward the information. Colonel Frances Iacoboni, US Retired, peacefully departed at 1216 hours on 9 May 2011 at Walter Reed US Army Hospital in Washington DC. Her husband, Colonel James Krilich, retired, was with her, holding her hand and she knew he was there telling her "I love you". kissing her, lightly stroking lightly the top of her head - and telling her again and again "not to worry about me." Frances' last weeks of life were characterized with her usual bearing of dignity, respect, tenderness and cheerfulness. Frances suffered from the effects of Agent Orange contamination from her combat tour in Vietnam. Frances was a 100 percent service connected disabled veteran; a female soldier of the Vietnam War - suffering from Agent Orange caused cancers. American Legion #255 Color Guard - 2011 Her sister Margaret Iacoboni, Sgt. Michael Krilich from Fort Richardson Alaska visited shortly before her passing along with frequent visits of her long time friends who also served as US Army officers, and the special visits and blessings of the Holy Father's appointed priests within the Catholic Diocese of Washington DC; countless prayers at multiple levels throughout the United States; special recognition by the soldiers of the United States Army; and over 300 cards and messages from colleagues and friends. In May -8- Commodore Remarks Flag Raising Ceremony May 28, 2011 Welcome to our ceremonial flag rising which signifies the official beginning of the 2011 Yachting season of the Corinthian Yacht Club. We are here today to celebrate the 108th year of our club and to remember those that have gone before us. It is also a time to pause and reflect on the legion of heroes who we thank for the unmatched freedoms we Americans enjoy today. This year we are remembering the great struggle that divided our country 150 years ago. Our Southern Maryland location has a rich history to contribute to those memories. Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on May 5th, 1868 by General John Logan, the Commanding General of the Army and first observed on May 30th, 1868 when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. In his proclamation he noted the observance was about reconciliation; it’s about coming together to honor those who gave there all. After WWI… and I must add well after the formation of the Corinthian Yacht Club… the celebration took on additional significance as a time to remember all those that gave their all in America’s conflicts. On Memorial Day the flag is raised briskly to the top of the staff and then solemnly lowered to the half-staff position, where it remains only until noon. We have simulated that today with the flag currently at half staff It is then raised to full staff for the rest of the day. The half-staff position remembers the more than one million men and women who gave their lives in service of their country. At noon their memory is raised by the living, who resolve not to let their sacrifice be in vain, but to rise up in their stead and continue the fight for liberty and justice for all. For as William Havard said: “The greatest glory of a free-born people is to transmit that freedom to their children.” People are struggling for freedom all over our globe and young Americans…our children… are in many of those locations selflessly giving their all to aid in the pursuit of liberty in the great tradition of the United States Military. Their courageous contributions to the preservation of freedom serve witness to Billy Graham’s observation about courage. He said “Courage is contagious. When a brave man takes a stand, the spines of others are often stiffened.” Our fine young men and women are setting the example for all of us to follow. There are many among us who have served proudly in the past and whom I would like to recognize now. Will all of the veterans who are among us please stand and take a step forward if you can. I salute you. There is one of our number who cannot stand with us today… though we know she is with us. -9- It is appropriate to recognize Colonel Frances Iacoboni, United States Army, who passed away on May 9th of this year. She was a long time member of this club, very active in local community service and a decorated service member. During Fran’s distinguished service she was a personal advisor to then President Dwight Eisenhower as well as to the Commanding General of the 82nd Airborne Division and the Commanding General, 7th Medical Command with oversight of nine US Army Hospitals and numerous clinics and Embassies in Europe. She served four years as the Chief Dietitian of the US Army and she was one of the last US Army officers to be evacuated from Saigon. Her decorations include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal with four oak leaf clusters and the Air Medal. Fran’s passing reminds me of quote from and old headstone in Ireland “Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal.” Fran we are filled with heartache at your passing but will always have fond memories of the love you showed us, your family and your community. "IN DAYS PAST, TWO BELLS MARKED THE END OF THE ROUTINE DAY ABOARD A SHIP. IT WAS TIME FOR TATOO, AND SOON, TAPS WOULD SOUND THROUGHOUT THE SHIP. I would like to borrow from that Naval tradition to HONOR OUR DEPARTED SHIPMATES by the ringing of the bells. LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, WOULD YOU PLEASE BOW YOUR HEADS." "THE TOLL OF THE SHIP'S BELL REMINDS US OF THE REVERENCE WE OWE TO OUR DEPARTED SHIPMATES;TO THOSE WHO GUARD THE HONOR OF OUR COUNTRY.........UPON THE SEA........IN THE AIR........AND ON FOREIGN SOIL. LET IT BE A REMINDER OF THE FAITH THEY CONFIDE IN US; LET US WHO GATHER HERE NOT FORGET OUR OBLIGATIONS, AND IN SILENCE, BREATHE A PRAYER FOR OUR ABSENT SHIPMATES. LET US OFFER A SILENT PRAYER FOR OUR DEPARTED SHIPMATES. THIS MOMENT OF REVERENCE WE DEDICATE TO THE MEMORY OF OUR SHIPMATES WHO HAVE GONE BEFORE US. -10- -11- Auction Item Cottage for a weekend Commodore’s Room for a weekend Vice Commodore’s Room for weekend Rear Commodore’s Room for weekend Opportunity to fire the Cannon – May 2012 Your boat picture being the on the cover CYC Directory 2012 Washington Redskins Memorabilia - Donated by CYC CYC CYC CYC CYC Sold to $65 – Austring $65 –Foster $60 – Foster $60 – Foster $35 - Spangler $50 -Tapp D & G Austring Chocolate & Caffeine Gift Basket Wine Package – Stained Glass Window Beveled Dove with Olive Branch – Roasted garlic cooker – George Foreman Grill – Chain Saw – Nationals tickets – Nationals tickets 4 Margarita glasses and a Pitcher made of pale green etched glass – Folding Exercise Bike.
