The felting process Using the following method, felt each of the pieces separately by hand using clean water between each piece. Tip: when felting the patterned swatch, colour bleeding will occur. Placing a dylon ‘colour catcher’ sheet in the water and rubbing the sheet with the knitting will reduce the bleeding, but not prevent it. Fill the basin with very hot water, add a generous squeeze of washing up liquid (this type of soap will help remove the natural oils in the wool more quickly). Squeeze the soap into the fabric. With rubbing, agitation and a little patience, the swatch will begin to felt. Keep working at the piece until you can no longer see any stitch definition. Rinse thoroughly in cold water. Press excess water out by flattening between towels. Pull firmly to remove any creases and to even out edges. Allow to dry naturally. This quantity of felt should make all 5 decorations shown in the pattern. MAKING UP From the heart templates given, cut out 3 large, 1 medium and 3 small hearts from felted piece A; 1 large, 1 medium and 5 small hearts from felted piece B; 4 medium and 5 small hearts from felted piece C. Heart 1 Take 1 medium heart from piece C and using yarn A and photograph as a guide, work a line a running stitch around the heart leaving one side edge clear, then blanket stitch around this final edge. Take 2 buttons, 1 small heart from piece A and 1 small heart from piece B and using a small sewing needle and photograph as a guide take needle through first hole of button from back to front, then pass needle down through second hole of button. Now take needle through centre of first small heart, then through the medium sized heart taking needle to the back of the heart. Thread the needle through the second small heart at the back and then pass needle through a second button, bringing the yarn back through all the layers but not through the first button. Fastening off securely on the underside of the first small heart. Using yarn B attach a hanging loop to the top of the heart decoration. Heart 2 Take 2 large hearts from piece A and with WS facing each other and yarn B, work a line of running stitch through both hearts close to the outside edge. Leave a small gap between the hearts and fill with the toy stuffing before closing the gap. With approx 40cm of string, thread the needle from the bottom to the top, through the centre of the heart leaving a tail of approx 5cm. Using photograph as a guide make a hanging loop at the top of the heart, then take the needle back through the heart and knot the two ends of string close to the bottom of the heart and trim string. Knot the loop at the top of the heart to fasten securely. Heart 3 Take 1 large heart from piece A and 1 large heart from piece B and with WS facing each other and using yarn A, work a line of running stitch through both hearts close to the outside edge. Leave a small gap between the hearts and fill with the toy stuffing before closing the gap. Take 2 buttons, 1 small heart from piece A and 1 small heart from piece C and using a small sewing needle and photograph as a guide take needle through first hole of button from back to front, then pass needle down through second hole of button. Now take needle through centre of first small heart, then thread the needle through the second small heart at the back and then pass needle through a second button, bringing the yarn back through all the layers but not through the first button. Fastening off securely on the underside of the first small heart. With approx 50cm of string, thread the needle from the top to the bottom, through the centre of the heart leaving a tail of approx 15-20cm.Take the needle back through the heart leaving a length of string approx 7cm. Make a hanging loop by knotting both ends of the string together and trim. Place the small heart piece through the bottom loop so that one heart sits either side of the string. Stitch in place using yarn B. Cinnamon Bundle Take 2 cinnamon sticks and an oddment of yarn B and fasten together. Wrap a short length of ribbon around the sticks and pin in place. With a 40cm length of string, lay flat and place the bundle of sticks in the centre of the string, making sure the pin holding down the ribbon is at the back.Tie string around the bundle and fasten tightly with a knot to secure the ribbon to the bundle. Make a hanging loop by knotting the 2 ends of string together and trim. Take 1 small heart from piece B and 1 button and sew button to the centre of the heart, using photograph as a guide. Attach small heart to the front of the cinnamon bundle. Heart Hanger Take approx 70cm of string and attach 2 cinnamon sticks to one end of string, leaving approx 8cm for hanging loop. Take 2 buttons, 1 small heart from piece A and 1 small heart from piece B and using a small sewing needle and photograph as a guide take needle through first hole of button from back to front, then pass needle down through second hole of button. Now take needle through centre of first small heart, then thread the needle through the second small heart, catching the length of string between the two hearts and securing with a few stitches, then pass needle through a second button, bringing the yarn back through all the layers but not through the first button. Fastening off securely on the underside of the first small heart. You will need to repeat this step for the foll heart pieces: 2 buttons and 2 small hearts from piece C (twice). 2 buttons and 2 small hearts from piece B. 2 buttons and 1 medium heart from piece B and 1 medium heart from piece C. 2 buttons and 1 medium heart from piece A and 1 medium heart from piece C. Knot the string close to the bottom heart and trim. Tie approx 40cm of ribbon in a bow around the hanging loop.
