Ashlyn Grant, Blake Cox, Isabel Kettle, Trinity Brown, Megan Hammerstein, Amelia Shill, Toneya Hurst, Hannah Maxwell, Jodan Grant and Marnie Stackpoole. Miss Adams 1 A Message from our Principal ... Exam Week Next week is exam week and students in Years 9 to 12 will be busily involved in completing their exams and/or the GAT. Year 9, 10 and 11 Exams are being held from Monday June 6 th to Friday June 10th. To help ensure that all students gain invaluable experience at performing successfully under examination conditions, class time prior to the exams has been devoted to revision and exam preparation and technique. The exams will provide valuable end of semester assessment information for teachers and help to prepare many of our students for their final exams at the end of their VCE. The GAT All students currently completing a VCE Unit 3 subject will be required to complete the GAT on Tuesday 7th June. The importance of the GAT cannot be stressed too highly, as students’ GAT results can have a major impact on their end of year results. It is vital that the GAT is treated very seriously, and that students do their absolute best when completing it. Our students have been familiarised with the type of tasks that will be required of them when attempting the GAT and many have prepared by completing tasks which have appeared on the GAT in recent years. Pupil Free Day - Report Writing Day Staff spent today busily working on finalising student assessments and beginning to write students’ end of semester reports. This is always a very busy and stressful time of the year for students and staff. I am sure that our students appreciated a long weekend break, and I am also sure that our staff appreciated being provided with time to focus specifically on the writing of their reports. Student reports will be mailed out at the end of the term. School for Student Leadership Thank you to Mr Miller who has completed the unenviable task of determining our four female representatives at the Snowy River campus at Marlo of the School for Student Leadership/Alpine School in Term Four. After a rigorous selection process, congratulations to Ella Wood, Amy Wood, Lauren Bowles and Toneya Hurst. Congratulations also to our emergencies Mikaela Moorfoot and Annalise Stroet. Our school has a long and very successful association with the Alpine School, and it has provided life changing opportunities for many of our students. We wish the girls all the very best, and I am confident that they will be fantastic ambassadors for our school. Welcome Back Ms McDougall It was very pleasing this week to welcome back Ms McDougall from Family Leave. Instead of returning to her previous Leading Teacher role of Junior School Coordinator, Ms McDougall will take over the Leading Teacher Senior School Coordinator position to replace Ms Lobry, who will be the Acting Principal of Derrinallum P-12 College for the remainder of the year. Ms McDougall’s enthusiasm, positive attitude, fantastic work ethic and outstanding leadership skills will greatly assist our collective efforts to achieve ongoing school improvement. 2 Visit by Dan Tehan MP On Wednesday Dan Tehan MP kindly visited our school to address our Legal Studies class. Mr Tehan’s visit was arranged by Ms Ravenscroft, and students in the Legal Studies class were very pleased to be provided with the opportunity to be addressed by the Federal Member for Wannon (Victoria) in the House of Representatives and to be able to ask questions of him. Congratulations Mal Ferguson Our school would like to acknowledge and thank Mal Ferguson for his outstanding work transporting generations of students safely to and from school. Mal has been driving the Yalla-y-Poora bus route since 1980 and he has been highly respected, not only by his employer and our school, but also by the many young people who he has transported to ensure that they had access to gaining a quality education. Mal will complete his final bus run on the last day of this term. Geoff Sawyer Principal Year 9, 10 & 11 Exams Next week students in Year’s 9 – 11 will be undertaking exams. The exam timetable has been distributed to students, posted home to parents and included in this newsletter. Students are expected to attend school for the entire day during exam week. When not in an exam students will be studying in designated rooms at school. School uniform is to be worn for all exam days. Students completing VCAL will have normal classes for this week. House Music Competition On Friday 24th June students will be participating in a House Music competition. All houses have been busy preparing their songs for the competition. Each house will have a whole group song and a small group performance. The competition will begin at 1:30pm and will be an excellent way to end the term. Parents are invited to come along to support their child’s house. The competition will be held in the music room. Angela Roberts Junior School Coordinator 3 As part of the Koori Engagement Program, coordinated by Julie Anderson, seven students from Ararat College attended “Yuarr” at the Ararat Performing Arts Centre. Those students were Amber Russell, Lizzie White, Alex Padgett, Jack Foster, Maryanne Pitts, Jose Johnson & Chloe Pitts. Yuarr is an Aboriginal Australian program which was presented by Jack Sheppard. Jack shared his experiences through rap and dance, and engaged the students throughout the session. Mrs Roberts On Tuesday the 24th of May, Mrs Roberts, a few students and myself attended and took part in a workshop of sorts. Students from Marian College and North primary school were also there. Jack Sheppard came in to speak and told us about his journey both physical and spiritual. He made up a rap and incorporated a lot of his indigenous language into it. It spoke about his journey from Frankston up to the islands around the Torres Straight Islands, learning about his indigenous side. After that all the students went down on to the stage and we had to split into guys and girls and preformed a tribal dance. Then we all went back to our seats and he performed a dance that represented his struggles. During his dance he symbolized his journey with paint markings all over his body. Finally to end it all he called all the students down to the stage and we gathered in a circle and went around telling him what ethnicity you are. After that he concluded and we returned back to school. Jose Johnson The Black Ranges Cross Country was held at Murtoa last Thursday, in cool but clear conditions. Previous rain made one particular section into a “Tough Mudder” slog. Our top 10 finishers were Tyson Makovec (10th) in the 13 Boys race and Ella Wood (9th) in the 15 Girls. Other participants were JJ Bartlett, Jeremy Breen, Lachie Fiegert, Khloe Campbell, Kate Sellon, Nikita McDonald, Mia Wood, Amelia Andrew, Chloe Graham, Sophie Graham and Toneya Hurst. Best wishes to Tyson, who will be running at the Greater Western Cross Country in Warrnambool on Moday Thankyou to Miss Anne Henry and Mr Young for supervising these students. 4 Students chose a subject from the animal kingdom to use as inspirations for a trial of black and white scraper board media. The task required Year 8 Blue students to reverse their normal drawing process by focusing on developing the light areas of their image, rather than darkening areas as you would in a normal grey lead drawing. Well done 8 Blue!! 5 A National Youth Week Event for Ararat College Students Thanks to Brendan from CGLLEN, and the support of Mrs Lugg, students recently had the opportunity to participate in this workshop during lunchtimes at school. Each student was able to develop their own design, which they then turned into a stencil. Students used spray paint to put their stencil onto their final canvas. 6 7 8 Session 3 1:50 – 3:30pm Session 2 11.20am – 1:00pm 10:00 – 10:40am Session 1 9:10 – 9:50am (10 min break) Year 10 Careers Day MYC Year 11 Art Year 11 History Supervised study – SL14 & SL13 Year 9 English (E45 & E46) Year 9 Boys – TAFE building Year 9 Girls – TTC GAT for Unit 3 students Tuesday Supervised study – SL10 & SL19 Year 10 English Year 9 & 10 Maths PAT Test (E-wing) Year 9 & 10 English PAT Test (E-wing) Monday Session 1 Year 11 English 9:00 – (MYC) 11:15am Session 3 – 1.50pm – 3.30pm 11.20am – 1.00pm Session 2 Session 1 9.10 – 10.50am Supervised study – SL19 & SL10 Café (Food room) Supervised study – SL19 & SL13 Year 11 Literature Electronics World Wars Health Digital Technology Year 11 Maths Methods Year 11 General Maths Supervised study – SL14 & SL18 Art 1 Psychology & the Science of Teens Year 11 Physical Education Wednesday Session 3 – 1.50pm – 3.30pm 11.20am – 1.00pm Session 2 Session 1 9.10 – 10.50am Supervised study – SL13 & SL19 Film & Television Working with Animals Advanced Bakery (Food room) Supervised study – SL14 & SL18 Build Your Own Business Year 11 Media Year 11 Biology Supervised study – SL19 & SL10 Working with Wood Year 11 Accounting Year 11 Psychology Thursday Year 9 Maths Year 10 General Maths Supervised study – SL19 & SL10 VCD Outdoor Ed Year 10 Maths Methods Supervised study – SL19 & SL10 Ball Sports (Gym) Physics/Chemistry Friday Year 11 H & HD Year 11 Legal Studies Year 11 Product Design & Technology Year 11 IT Year 9, 10 and 11 Exam Timetable Yr 9:Discovering Me?
