Bethel Park School District October 2010 Highlights Six BPHS Seniors Recognized by National Merit Scholarship Corporation! • • • BPHS senior Justin Fleischmann has been named one of 16,000 National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists in recognition of his high scores on the PSAT, which he took as a junior. He is now eligible to receive one of 8,400 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $36 million to be awarded in the spring of 2010. Congratulations to seniors Nate Braman, Deanna Kovell, Spencer Kun, Jacob Michalski and Manasa Ravi, who were named one of 34,000 Commended Students in the program for their outstanding PSAT scores. Six Students Lauded by Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth • • • BPHS Freshman Jarrod Cingel took the SAT as an eighth grader and received the Top in Country Award for being the highest scoring 8th grader in the country on the SAT Math Exam from the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth. He was also the top scoring 8th grader in Pennsylvania on the combined SAT Reading and Math Exams; the top scoring 8th grader in PA on the Math Exam and the second highest scoring 8th grader in PA on the SAT Reading Exam. BPHS freshmen Kevin Fleischmann, Brandon Hanson, Christian Hokaj and eighth graders Aaron Coplan and Adithya Krishnachand earned High Honors Certificates from CTY for their high scores on the SAT as IMS students last year. BPHS Students Finish in First and Third Places at CalcuSolve • • • BPHS freshman Kevin Fleischmann finished in First Place at the Grades 9 and 10 CalcuSolve competition at Duquesne University. BPHS sophomore Dan Snyder finished in Third Place. 155 area students competed in this competition which tested students’ higher math skills. (Left to right): Kevin Fleischmann and Dan Snyder. They will have the opportunity to meet with professionals once a month to get a better understanding of their career of interest. Nursing and Healthcare: Dalton Amato, Julie Krzywiecki and Hayley Bielich Contemporary Dance: Johanna Maloney and Krista Colarosa Broadcast Journalism: Shannon Coyle and Jordan Duhig Architecture: Alex Curtis and Michayla Wicker Engineering: Kayla Walker, Stephen Gronsky and Mark Render Green Design (Civil Engineering): Greg Pohodich and Rob Heuler Astronomy: Kayla Kirsch Robotics: Eric Rose Acting: Lucy Sedor-Franzak Marine Biology: Matthew Spicuzza Washington First Graders Appear on Steelers TV Show • • • All three Washington Elementary First Grade Classes appeared in a segment called “Ready, Set, What?” which is part of the McDonald’s Steelers KidZone television show, which airs on Sunday mornings on Pittsburgh’s CW (Channel 19). They were interviewed and shared their extensive knowledge about the Pittsburgh Steelers and football. The students did a great job. Their segments aired in October. Here we go, Steelers! Here we go! Lincoln and Memorial Elementary Schools Named Title I Distinguished Schools • • • • • Lincoln and Memorial Elementary Schools were named Title I Distinguished Schools by the Pennsylvania Department of Education’s Division of Federal Programs for making Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) on the PSSA Exams, and for meeting specific improvement criteria for one or more of the subgroups tested. Scores for Memorial’s IEP students improved 34% on the Math Exam. Scores for Lincoln’s Economically Disadvantaged students improved 30% on the Reading Exam. They were among a group of 140 Pennsylvania schools to earn this distinction. Each school will receive $3,000 in recognition of its outstanding improvement on the PSSA Exams.
