Ten Students Win Awards At PJAS
FIRST PLACE – These students will compete at the State Pennsylvania
Junior Academy of Science on the Penn State Campus in May:
• Jack Brownfield (“Lichenometry of Western PA”)
• Jarrod Cingel (“Mapping Detectable Warnings Using Support
Vector Machines”) Also earned the Perseverance Award for
participating six consecutive years.
• Emily Cowser (“Robots on Different Surfaces”) Also earned the
Duquesne University Young Science Stars Award.
• James Fleckenstein (“Lick the Wound, Cure the Wound”)
• Molly Graham (“The Effects of Circuitous Influences on Implicit
Egotism”) Also earned the Perseverance Award for participating
six consecutive years.
• Sean McClaine (“Bacteriophages: A New Cure?”)
• Jessica Viehman (“The Unique Properties of Pykrete”) Also
earned a $50 Award from the Society of Civil Engineers and a
Certificate of Excellence from the Society of Woman Engineers.

Trial Team For First
Time In School
History
For the first time in school history, Bethel Park High School fielded a Mock
Trial Team. They participated in two trials and were close to winning both.
Representing Bethel Park were Jamie Cavrak, Molly Graham, Sean Becker,
Dominic Capozzoli, Billy dePoutiloff, Rachel Dimmock, Natalie Lalama,
Sean McClaine, Max Reese and Ryan Vanhorenbeck.
At the trials, Natalie Lalama was named Best Advocate for the Defense and
Max Reese was named Best Defense Witness. Molly Graham was named
Best Advocate for the Plaintiff and Jamie Cavrak was named Best Plaintiff
Witness.
Shelbi Miller and Clayton Meier Earn SHASDA
Awards
Bethel Park High School seniors Shelbi Miller and Clayton Meier
were selected to receive the SHASDA Award from the South Hills
Area School Districts Association.
Every year, SHASDA member high schools select two seniors who
have overcome obstacles in their lives to experience success in
school.

These students will represent Bethel Park High School in the
Pennsylvania Music Educators Association’s All-State Chorus,
which will perform at the PMEA State Conference in Hershey in
March.

The Steel Center Area Vocational Technical
School presented Extra Effort Awards to:

Place At Skills
USA Competition
Four BPHS students placed at the District Skills USA Competition,
competing against students from other area vocational technical
schools.
• Matt Dulavitch – FIRST PLACE in Computer Maintenance. Matt
will now compete in the State Skills USA Competition.
• Michelle Braga – SECOND PLACE in Electrical Construction

BPHS Drama Club Students Help Elementary
Students To ‘Feed The Need To Read’
The Shake-A-Leg Players (aka the BPHS Drama Club) wrote and
performed an original assembly featuring songs, skits and dances
to encourage Memorial Elementary School students to “Feed the
Need to Read.” The assembly kicked-off the school’s Accelerated
Reader Program.
The program was so well-received that it will be performed in all
Bethel Park elementary schools to encourage students to read,
read, read!
BPHS Hosts FASFA Workshop To
Help Parents Complete
Paperwork To Apply For College
Scholarships For Their Children
The Bethel Park High School Counseling and Technology
Departments worked together to host a FAFSA Night for
approximately 30 BPHS families.
Representatives from the Pennsylvania Higher Education
Assistance Agency were on-hand to help families of college-bound
seniors to fill out their Free Application for Federal Student Aid,
which allows families to apply for grants and scholarships.
The District provided families the use of laptops for the evening
and technical assistance to help them fill out the online survey.
IMS Eighth Grader Follows His Passion For Art
And Video Games

School eighth grader
Christopher Futrell is
combining his love of art
and video games to create
artwork for Flipline Studios.
His recent drawings for
Flipline’s Papa’s Pasteria
were selected for posting
on Flipline’s Fan Art Blog.
IMS Is One Of Four PA
Schools To Pilot
Technology For StateWide Testing
Independence Middle School is one of four Pennsylvania schools to
participate in a Pilot Program to gauge student response to using
technology devices to take state-mandated tests.
Students used Bethel Park iPads and Bluetooth keyboards provided
by Data Recognition Corp to complete sample tests.
Feedback from this pilot will provide DRC with valuable information
regarding how well students might perform on the PSSAs, Keystones
and CDTs using technology.
NAMS Students Paint Black History Mural On
School Windows
Neil Armstrong Middle School students Sarah Gilliam, Roma Eisel,
Lily Hunter, Katelyn Heeter and Carson Hellerman worked together
to research Black History in the United States and then painted a
mural detailing their findings on the front windows of the school.
This was an extracurricular project and the students worked after
school to complete their research and painting.

Elementary District Band
Eight NAMS sixth graders have
been selected to play in the
Pennsylvania Music Educators
Association’s District Band Fest
West which will be held at
Carlynton High School on
Saturday, May 10.

Sponsors Second Annual
Third Grade Spelling Bee
Memorial Third Grader Samantha Wolf was the winner of the
Second Annual Bethel Park Third Grade Spelling Bee, sponsored by
the Rotary Club of Bethel Park.
William Penn Third Grader Nora Bell came in Second Place and
William Penn Third Grader Josh Pfister finished in Third Place.
This year 77 Bethel Park Third Graders participated. Samantha is
now eligible to compete in the Rotary District Spelling Bee at
Seven Springs in June.
Hockey Team Helps
Students To Skate At
Bladerunners
Members of the Bethel Park High School Varsity Hockey Team
spent some time at Bladerunners helping a group of special
students from Neil Armstrong, Washington and Penn to skate.
The hockey players pushed the younger students, who were sitting
in plastic chairs, along the ice. Then everybody enjoyed a pizza
party.
This annual event brings smiles to the faces of all participants!
BPHS A Finalist For
Excellence Award
Bethel Park High School is one of 12 Finalists for the
Master Builders’ Association of Western Pennsylvania’s
Excellence Award.
The winner will be announced at The Construction
Industry Evening of Excellence, which will be held on
Thursday, February 27 at Heinz Field.
BPSD Cafeterias Earn
92 Diamond Awards
From ACHD
Bethel Park High School Cafeterias earned 92 Diamond
Awards from the Allegheny County Health Department
this school year (42 during the first inspection of the
2013-2014 school year, and 50 during the second
inspection of the 2013-2014 school year).
Diamonds are the highest awards given by the ACHD
and are given only to those facilities that demonstrate
exceptional sanitation and food handling practices.
Kindergarten Registration Begins In March
Kindergarten Registration for the 2014-2015 school year begins in March.
Students who will be age five on or before September 1, 2014 are eligible to
begin Kindergarten in the Fall.
Parents should bring their child to Registration and have the completed
Kindergarten Registration Packets (found on-line on all elementary schools’
websites or they can be picked up at any elementary school), their child’s
original birth certificate and proof of Bethel Park residency with them.
• Memorial – Tuesday, March 4 at the Community Center from 9:30 to 11
AM and 1:30 to 3 PM
• Lincoln – Wednesday, March 5 from 9:30 to 11 AM and 1 to 2:30 PM
• Penn – Tuesday, March 11 at the Community Center from 9:30 to 11 AM
and 1:30 to 3 PM
• Washington – Wednesday, March 14 from 9:30 to 11 AM and 1:30 to 3
PM
• Franklin – Tuesday, March 18 from 9:30 to 11 AM (last names A-M) and
1:30 to 3 PM (last names N-Z).
Bethel Park High School To Stage ‘Children
Of Eden’ March 19-22
Bethel Park High School will stage “Children of Eden” as its 2014 musical
offering Wednesday through Saturday, March 19-22 at 7:30 PM in the
Bethel Park High School Auditorium.
Tickets are $10 for rows A-O and $8 for rows P-CC. Tickets will be on sale from Monday,
March 10 through Tuesday, March 18 from 8:30 to 10:30 AM in the Athletic Lobby
Entrance. An Evening Sale will take place on Tuesday, March 11 from 6 to 7:30 PM in the
Athletic Lobby Entrance.
Senior citizens can receive half-price admission to the Wednesday, March 19 and Thursday,
March 20 performances only.
Students in Kindergarten through Fourth Grade can receive half-price admission to all
performances, but only if they are purchased at the box office on the night of the show.
