THE PRESIDENT`S DISPATCH
2016 SEASON | www.aspencylingclub.org THE PRESIDENT’S DISPATCH WELCOME TO THE 2016 ASPEN CYCLING CLUB RACING SEASON. 2016 ACC BOARD OF DIRECTORS PRESIDENT: Tyler Newton VICE PRESIDENT: Mark Logan SECRETARY: Rachel Beck This year marks some sizable changes for the Aspen Cycling Club. As the new President I would first, like to thank Mike Maple for his years of hard work as President of the club. Mike has stepped down from the Presidency, and remains an active member of the Board as we transition and grow. He leaves some big shoes to fill. I would also like to recognize Michael Faas and Brian McCall for their contributions over the past several years on the Board. In their place the Board welcomes Dr. Jon Gibans and Mark Logan. I look forward to working with John, Mark and the rest of the Board in bringing you the 29th season of ACC Racing. With that introduction, I am pleased to announce the 2016 season. We have a great race schedule planned with 9 road and 8 mountain bike races starting on April 27th and ending with our banquet at the Limelight Hotel on September 14th. The race schedule features “classic” ACC races, new variations of some of the classics, as well as a revival of the Hospital/Ashcroft/South Hayden race. The biggest change for the 2016 season is a revision in our race categories and start waves. For many years, the Board has received feedback from members regarding the complex and sometimes confusing categories. We feel the new categories will promote more competitive racing at all levels and make it easier for new members to find competitive groups to race with. The number of start waves is increasing from three to four. For more details, please read the 2016 ACC Racing Categories section on our website: I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our 2016 sponsors. These sponsors make it possible for us to continue to offer an exceptional and low-cost race series. Please keep these businesses in mind as you look for goods and services in the valley. Thanks to the support of our sponsors, the cost of participating in ACC races remains an extraordinary value—the full season road and mountain package ($135) covers your membership fee and entry into 18 races—less than many single-day events in Colorado. If you elect not to purchase a season race package, race-day registration is $5 for members, $10 for non-members. Membership and race entry for junior racers (18 and under) will continue to be FREE. Now, how do you prepare for the ACC 2016 season (aside from riding your bike)? First, we encourage everyone to register for the season online.Registering online saves you $10 versus payment by mail or at a race start. It simplifies membership registration for competitors and expedites early season data entry for results tabulation. To register online, go to www.aspencyclingclub.org/registration and click Register. I encourage anyone to purchase one of the race packages when registering—this allows you to race several races for free, eliminates the need to bring your $5.00 to each race, and expedites race-day registration. Plus, it makes life easier for our amazing staff; Race Director, Lisa Poole and Results Coordinator, John Callahan! Lastly, don’t forget to give back. The ACC Races cannot put on races without the help of club members, friends, and family. Starting last year, every member is required to marshal at least one race each season to qualify for end of season rankings. As an added bonus, every time you marshal a race your name will be added into a special end of season raffle; the more times you marshal the more chances you’ll have to win some great prizes. Please, sign-up to marshal through our website. With that, a warm welcome to the 2016 season! www.AspenCyclingClub.org You may have noticed another new change for 2016, our new logo! We are thankful to have Mark Logan’s expertise and guidance through both of these changes. Tyler Newton President, Aspen Cycling Club REGISTER ONLINE AT: www.aspencyclingclub.org/registration and click Register. Non-members are removed from the results before awarding points (i.e. non-members do “occupy” places when assigning points). • Points may only be earned after purchasing a membership (i.e. points are not awarded retroactively if a non-member purchases a membership midseason). • Places after a tie are skipped (i.e. Tie for first: 1st=30, 1st=30, 3rd=26). DUES AND POINTS ACC members who have paid their current year membership dues will be eligible for points. All competitors will be listed in race results but only current ACC members will be awarded ACC points. The first ACC member will receive first place points; the second member will receive second place points and so on. Non-members will be removed from ACC point calculations. If you choose to join the ACC once the season is underway, you will only earn points going forward. Points will not be awarded retroactively. CATEGORIES Middle/High school students and Masters age racers may choose to race in the A, B, or C categories rather than their respective age class. Masters may also race in a younger Masters category. You may race in different categories for the mountain and road series (but this will disqualify you from combined standings). You may change categories during a season; however, your points and race times will not follow you to the new category. See all categories at www.aspencyclingclub.org. BIKE TYPES Points will be only awarded if you ride a bike that is specific to or considered a disadvantage to ride in that discipline (i.e. an MTB in a road race or cyclocross race). • Only mountain and fat-tire bikes may be used in mountain bike races. Cyclocross bikes may not be used in mtb races. • Mountain and cyclocross bikes may be used in road bike races. • Single-speed bikes are allowed but there are no longer separate single speed categories. • Aero bars and disk or tri-spoke wheels are not allowed in any mass start race. • Tandem bikes are not allowed in any race. • Electric or any other type of propulsion assist is illegal. VOLUNTEERING/MARSHALLING IN ORDER TO QUALIFY FOR INDIVIDUAL END OF SEASON RANKINGS, YOU MUST VOLUNTEER MARSHAL FOR AT LEAST ONE (1) RACE. No points will be awarded for your first race marshalled but you will become eligible for End of Season Points Ranking. Any and all subsequent marshalled races will earn 15 points awarded in the discipline of your choice (must be determined on the day of the race). Marshals will be entered into a year-end raffle and receive one entry for each time marshalling. The raffle will only be for marshals. Marshals that volunteer more than three times will be provided complimentary entry to the year-end banquet. Trails Day participation is awarded with 30 points going toward the mountain series and combined series. Volunteering for Trails Day does not qualify you for End of Season Points. ACC will host one trails day on a Wednesday evening to encourage participation among members. TEAM POINTS The top three race finishers for each team in each category earn points for their respective teams. The marshal requirement does not apply to Team point scoring. There are no limits on how many members can be on a team. Riders may only race for one team in a season. We encourage everyone to join a team and teams to actively recruit members. FINAL STANDINGS To qualify for year-end final standings, you must volunteer marshal for at least one race and you must compete in at least four races in a discipline to be eligible for the year-end championship in that discipline and in both disciplines to be eligible for the overall. The two lowest point scoring races will be dropped from the total number of road and mountain bike races HELD; the sum of the remaining races will be each member’s season total in that discipline. If a member does not compete in all the races held in a discipline, the season total will be the total of all races entered up to the maximum number scored. For example, in a ten race road series, eight races will be scored; however, if a member complete only six races, their season total will be the sum of the points from those six races. COMBINED STANDINGS Combined standings are the sum of an eligible member’s end of season totals from both Road and Mountain disciplines. Kids’ race series are exempt from minimum requirements. Overall/Combined Winners Team: Limelight Hotel Kids Girls*: Maia Ettlinger Kids Boys*: Edwin Ryerson Middle School Boys: Chase Kelly (Limelight Hotel) High School Boys: Connor Laughren (Aspen High School MTB Team) Super Grand Masters Men 75+: Jacques Frenchy Houot (Jour de Fete/Clifbar) Grand Masters Men: John Adamson (Twisted Spoke) Masters Men: Bill Boughton (Ajax Bike and Sport) Vet Men A: Chris Lane (ACES) Senior Men A: Butch Peterson (Hub of Aspen) * Kids did not have a road series so by default the mtb series winner should be considered the overall winner * All other categories did not have a combined winner because no-one met the minimum road and mtb race criteria WOODY CREEK CRITERIUM The Woody Creek Sports Car Club and Track is the location of the annual Woody Creek Criterium. This is a PRIVATE club and is on PRIVATE property. They generously allow us to hold our annual race there with no benefit to them. However, this privilege is dependent upon our following their guidelines. This year’s race will occur on Wednesday, June 15th. Arrive early to ensure that you will have time to warm up. DO NOT venture onto the course at any other time, as you will be arrested for trespassing! By respecting this private property, we will keep our privilege to race on the course. There will be five races held during the 2016 season for children ages 6 to 10. The kid’s series will kick off on May 11th this year with a small hill climb on Smuggler Mtn. It will be followed by two races in June, one in Snowmass Village and one at Buttermilk. One race will be held in July and the season finale will take place early August. Kid’s races begin 15 minutes before the adult and junior divisions, typically around 5:45 pm, but check the weekly race announcements throughout the season for any changes. Kids’’ Race Series Please note that ANY TYPE OF BIKE CAN BE USED. These races are FREE, but a parent or guardian must sign a waiver before the child can race. We will have end of season awards for all competitors, including recognition of overall boy and girl champions. We encourage and need parents to help out on race day. Come out and cheer on our little racers! RIDER RESPONSIBILITY OF GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP THE ASPEN CYCLING CLUB GENERALLY FOLLOWS USAC RULES. FOR COMPLETE RULES SEE: http://usacycling.org/usa-cycling-rule-book.htm ■ ■ ■ ■ ACC numbers must be visible during ACC competitions. Road Race numbers are to be vertically affixed to the right upper torso. ACC Race numbers may not be cut, trimmed, folded, or altered. All competitors must keep to the right of the yellow center line throughout a race including at the finish line. In the event that there is no center line indicated on the road, riders must stay to the right half of the road. A yellow line violation puts all racers in a dangerous situation and is grounds for disqualification. Racers starting at different times/start waves are not allowed to draft, pace or help nor interfere with racers from other start waves. ■ If you finish in a pack, check in with volunteer marshals to verify finish position. ■ For Time Trials, competitors must arrive at the start queue no later than 30 seconds before their start or their start position will be forfeited. All starts must be from a full stop. PROTESTS The Race Director will consider corrections to race results until the end of the day following a race. Race results will be final 24 hours after the initial posting of each race’s results. Wait until after an event is over before talking to finish line officials. POINTS OF ETIQUETTE & RULES ■ Please stay completely off the pavement with your bike when stopped before and after road races. ■ Courteously alert other riders and racers when overtaking them. Do not impede the progress of a passing rider. This is especially important in mountain bike races when riders from different classes frequently overtake one another. ■ Point out upcoming hazards such as potholes or debris to other riders. ■ Take the time to learn cycling etiquette, tactics, and how to ride in a pace line. If you are uncertain of how or why you should do something, ask an experienced racer. ■ Ride fast, have fun and be safe! For 2016, the Roaring Fork Outdoor Volunteers (RFOV) is asking you and others of the Aspen Cycling Club to continue the commitment to their Adopt-a-Trail Program for the Government Trail. This year will be unique in that the ACC will be piloting the new Trail Agent program that comes from a partnership with the Roaring Fork Mountain Bike Association (RFMBA) and the National Forest Service. The concept of the Trail Agent program is to be able to penetrate deeper into more remote sections of trail for maintenance purposes. As you’re probably aware the middle section of the Government has been horribly neglected over the years. We will attempt to get some of the willing volunteers to ride into this more remote area to help reestablish proper drainage, maintain tread quality and trim back overgrowth. ACC’s trail day this year will be on Wednesday, July 13 from 4-8pm. Until further notice plan on meeting at the Buttermilk parking lot to either be shuttled up to West Buttermilk or come with your mountain bike and backpack to ride up past the rock garden. Bring sturdy shoes, raingear, gloves, energy food, mosquito repellant, water and gators if you have them. As always copious amounts of pizza and beer will be served afterwards to reward your hard efforts. Participants will be awarded 30 points towards the Mountain Bike Series for their dedication. Please check for club postings for further details as the date approaches. The Government needs you.
