Dear Members
Yet another season has come and gone. Once again, Clarky has done a great job in
keeping members and guests satisfied. Maranatha has been busy, probably due to
Clarky’s efforts, but possibly also because of the fact that several of our members
took advantage of cheap season passes and then scheduled several ski trips during
the season to get their money’s worth. I suspect even more members may jump on
the bandwagon next year. So get those bookings in early next year.
Speaking of bookings, remember that Maranatha is available for summer bookings.
Check the website for availability and contact the booking office to make your
bookings.
The club’s AGM will be held in March. Keep an eye on your inbox ( or the oldfashioned letterbox if you have not elected to receive the notice and business papers
by email) for the official notification of the date.
The main content of this newsletter is a report on the club’s senior races, courtesy of
Ian Gregory, together with some relevant photos. It also includes evidence of some
wardrobe(?) malfunctions. Get your mind out of the gutter and onto a higher plane!
I’m talking ski boots, not those infamous incidents involving Jennifer Hawkins or
Janet Jackson.
This summer, as always some of our members are heading off to the northern
hemisphere to extend their skiing season. Let’s hope that some of them provide an
article and/or some photos for a future newsletter.
The committee would like to wish all our members and their families a very happy
Christmas and best wishes for the new year.

Maranatha Senior Races
The senior races were held on Saturday 21st July at Upper Rollercoaster Blue Cow on a beautiful blue
sky morning with great snow conditions and a nice open GS course consisting of about 10 gates.
Heath Barnes addresses the troops before the race (why are they all looking at the camera and not
paying attention to Heath?).
The results are attached. The times shown are the sum of both runs so if you bomb one run you are
gone. We had a few come close, namely me, but everbody finished the course with respectable
times.
Our gun racer, Shaun [Elvis] Kenny, was the club open champion with Nicky Curtis edging out her
older sister for the first time and taking out the women’s open championship. Shaun has been skiing
with the Perisher Masters this year but broke a shoulder so was out for the season including the
Interclub. Hope it’s healing well, Shaun.

Good to see our cook and manager, Clarky, up there with the young boys on his telemark skis and
this is after he has lugged up the champagne and cheese and bickies from the valley.

The most fiercely contested categories are the 60+ with 5 women and 4 men racing. It’s Liz Scott’s
first time in this grouping where she edged out the others but watch out Liz because there are
others fast joining you in that group [the inevitability of getting old]. Kevin Donegan has joined the
old blokes for the first time and nearly knocked me off. Time for some secret race training methinks!
As usual the event was concluded with drinks, cheese and nibblies on top of the course looking at
Blue Cow and, of course, the presentation dinner back at the lodge with a great meal put on by
Clarky, and a bit of singing and dancing on the coffee table.
Thanks to Heath and Karen for making the event happen and a big thank you to all the members
who attended had fun and made the thing happen especially Glen and Jake Lapham, Martin Francis
and the other Walker family, Pom (Simon) and Ann who were all first-timers.

A message to all our membership - the club races are a great social event. So next year get in early
and come down and join us. Hope to have you with us.
( Ed’s note - I support Ian’s advice to book in early, but not so early that I miss out on my booking if I
happen to get my booking a little bit late. ☺ )

PS Bill Torrey and Chris Blatch race and party every year but Bill’s 25(?) year old plastic ski boots
fell apart on the way to the course. Would you believe that there is no ski hire or boot hire in Blue
Cow? So Bill had to watch from the sideline. There’s always next year, Bill.

A few members took time out at Guthega Pub after the races. Here we see Jenny Kent, Jenny
Andrew and Chris Blatch enjoying the view, which is nearly as good as the view from Maranatha.
What Ian has left out of his report is the famous dummy spit.
In fact it was Ian who produced a baby’s dummy, placed it in his mouth and spat it (literally) across
the dining room on the evening of the club races. Next time you see Ian ask him how often he spits
the dummy.
It has been a good (or should that be bad) year for destroying boots by our members. Pictured below
is another broken boot that until August graced the left foot of Martin Barnes.

I’ll finish off this newsletter with a shot of Lake Jindabyne covered by patchy fog and high cloud that I
captured while travelling down the Alpine Way from the skitube. I hope you like it.
