Rogue Artists Ensemble Rogue Artists Ensemble is a collective of multi-disciplinary artists who create Hyper-theater, an innovative hybrid of theater traditions, puppetry, mask work, dance, music, and modern technology. Through a collaborative development process, with an emphasis on design and storytelling, the Rogues create original, thought-provoking performances. We cultivate unique audience experiences that appeal to multiple generations of theatergoers in order to expand the boundaries of contemporary American theater. An Associate Artist with Rogue Artists Ensemble, she has been nominated for an LA Weekly Award for Best Comedy Ensemble (D is for Dog) and appeared in Songs of Bilitis at the Getty Villa, the workshop of Pinocchio, and last year’s HYPERBOLE: bard. Recently, she has been filming the webseries Ruby & Martin, an official selection of the International TV Festival and a finalist in the Comedy Central Pilot competition. Other performing/ writing credits include Stream for the Kennedy Center Page to Stage Festival, Best of Craigslist for the Hollywood Fringe, ‘Hilda’ in Ibsen’s Lady from the Sea, ‘Thyona’ in Big Love, and ‘Juliet’ in Romeo & Juliet. She was also a fellow at the Folger Shakespeare Library in DC, studied at the advanced program at Upright Citizens Brigade, and worked in late night comedy for Jimmy Kimmel Live. Thanks to Sean, the Rogues, and Z. taylorcoffman.com Jeremy Charles* Hohn (Ensemble) This lanky youth is “as precious as the day is long,” says actor Doug Jones. He’s a poet, theatre producer and mask maker from Orange County with a fetish for hat shopping and a passion for devised theatre. This affect and desire to create multi-disciplinary theatre sparked in 2011 from his study of commedia dell’Arte in Arezzo, Italy, and lead him to work with such physical theatre and clown masters as UC Irvine professors Annie Loui and Eli Simon, John Gilkey of The Idiot Workshop in Hollywood, LA’s favorite Santa, Donovan Scott, John Achorn of Dell’Arte International and briefly with Joe Williams exploring Delsarte’s System of Expression. Jeremy is a curious case, admittedly as green as the whites of his eyes to the world of art and performance, a kid in a candy shop so to speak. He holds four Associate Degrees from Fullerton College from “Science & Mathematics” to “Arts & Human Expression,” and recently, he graduated from the Drama program at UC Irvine. A Bachelor twice over. He is overjoyed to be collaborating with Rogue Artists Ensemble and touring this zany experience, which marks his 18th devised ensemble production. Many of these Jeremy produced and managed with his partner Alexander Makardish through their production entity, ClownMa dell’Arte, a partnership they formed in 2012 to, through primitive storytelling, inspire surrounding communities and recuperate the stigmatized idea of clown and mask in America. Thank you K, C, M, V, E, Z & K! Tovya Jacobs (Ensemble) recently made his Rogue Artists Ensemble debut as a puppeteer in Zen Shorts at the Skirball Puppet Festival and the Japanese Garden. Growing up in a theater family, he began apprenticing 20 years ago and since has traveled from Seattle to Florida to Switzerland performing and teaching traditional mask movement and puppetry. Meanwhile, he has written, directed, performed, stage-managed, and composed scores in over 30 productions (not necessarily all at once). Tovya is an unrepentant Shakespeare fan, may or may not have read through an entire complete works, and has performed in at least seven of Shakespeare’s plays. Next on the docket, Tovya is looking forward to a public reading of his own play, Kafka in Bed, produced by Company of Angels. Sarah Kay Peters (Ensemble) Sarah’s life-long love for theatre, music and dance has taken many forms in her career. She has been an actor, dancer, musician and teaching artist in all three disciplines. She studied theatre and dance and received a BA in Theatre Acting/Directing in Colorado, traveled to Oxford to study Shakespeare with the British American Drama Academy and appeared in numerous shows in Chicago and Los Angeles. After taking a few years away from theatre to create World Citizen Baby, a multicultural, multilingual early childhood music and movement program exploring culture through music and dance, she went back to theatre in 2012, earning her MA in Applied Theatre Arts from USC in 2013 which included an externship with The Center for Theatre of the Oppressed in Rio de Janeiro. Sarah began working with the Rogues as Education Manager in January 2014 and is very excited for the opportunity to be back onstage in HYPERBOLE: bard. Miles Taber (Ensemble) A graduate of UC Irvine, Miles has acted as a designer, performer, writer or director for the majority of the Rogues’ productions. Outside of the Ensemble, he can be found working on his illustrations, improvisation, podcast, pub quiz, puppetry videos, or as Merch Guy for legendary art rock band The Residents. Please note that all of these pursuits are fairly ridiculous. The Production Staff Sean T. Cawelti (Director, Puppet and Mask Design) graduated from the University of California Irvine with his BA in Drama with honors in Directing and studied puppetry at Tisch School of the Arts at NYU. Sean has won awards for his work as a designer, director and playwright, honored with a UNIMA Citation of Excellence for Gogol Project and was a 2013 finalist for Center Theater Group’s Sherwood Award as a director. He was selected by the City of Los Angeles’ Cultural Affairs Department to travel to Brazil for two months to study woodcarving and Candomblé, a religion born of African and Catholic traditions. Sean is the founding Artistic Director of Rogue Artists Ensemble a multi-media, puppet and mask company in Los Angeles. His directing work has been seen at the Getty Villa, South Coast Repertory, Segerstrom Center for the Arts, The Geffen Playhouse and the Center for Puppetry Arts in Atlanta. He has designed puppets, masks, props and video for theater, music videos, museums, concerts and arena shows including the recent Kanye West Yeezus world tour.
