STUDENT PROFILE Zimbabwe Reporters: Rok & Emilija, grade 10: “Who Am I? “ Interview with Rue Lynnete Mafuta Rue Lynnete Mafuta is a previous student of AIS (2010-2012), currently living in Arendal, Norway. She just finished the IB and is ready to take the next step in her life. Rue comes from Harare, Zimbabwe along with two of her siblings, Linda and Rutendo, who are currently at our school. She moved to Norway with her family due to better job opportunities for her father. Rue speaks three different languages : English, Shona and Norwegian. She has also traveled a lot around the world visiting countries such as Turkey, Zambia, South Africa, United Kingdom, Latvia and of course Zimbabwe and Norway. When she looks back at her years in AIS she remembers how much she liked how people in this school were very opened to new things and getting to know new people. Her favorite subjects were English and Math. She says that English was one of her favorites because she liked the way Mr. Grimshaw taught it, in a fun and interactive way. When it comes to Math she loves the fact that every problem has a solution. We asked her more questions about Norway and what she really likes about this country: Her favorite thing in Norway is the people and their dedication to their own culture. Rue mentioned that her previous environment in Zimbabwe was a lot different than here in Norway. Her favorite memory of Norway is from when she saw her first snowfall. She had never seen snow before and that is why it was such a tremendous and memorable moment for her. Rue also introduced us to some things she loved about her home country, her favorite food called Sadza and an activity/sport called Nhodo, which requires at least two players and many pebbles. You can read more about this sport on this webpage: http://www.povo.co.zw/opinions/zimbabwe-childrens-games-90s-nhodo . Rue’s future plans are to become a Neurosurgeon or a Pediatrician. She recently finished school and wants to study abroad. Her advice to 10th graders is, “Stay organized and everything else will fall into place” and “ Do not be afraid to fail.” So what does the concept of being a global citizen means to Rue? Having respect for other people with different cultures and different cultural backgrounds and this thought, “You can stop and observe the other people’s background and cultural identity.” Where in the world is Zimbabwe Wishing Roe all the best with her studies abroad! Mr. Mark lost count a long time ago of all of the places he has been to, but he has visited most European countries and a few others. He has lived in the UK, the Czech Republic, Latvia and Norway. He really wants to visit Belarus! Mr. Mark describes KIS as a small and very friendly place, with a good range of nationalities represented between staff and students. So what has Mr. Mark learned from working in an international school? He says, “There are rarely single, simple answers to the questions of how we raise and educate young people. We all have our own beliefs about what is important for the young people in our care, and the school has its own procedures and rules that must be followed, but it is important to listen and be open to those who have a different set of beliefs.” His advice for children is: Don’t waste your time at school. It is important that young people have a balance between learning and playing, but the time at school is very valuable for students, and everyone should be making the most of that time to learn, develop and grow into the young adults of the future. Celebration Highlight For June Lord of the Great Power Festival Reporter: Kjetil Tobias, grade 6 Lord of the Great Power Festival is a religious celebration that takes place in La Paz, Bolivia at the end of May or the first week of June. THE STORY BEHIND THIS CELEBRATION The Festival of Great Power is one of the best opportunities to see many colorful and typical Bolivian folkloric dances outside of the Carnival season. According to this story, on December 8th, 1663 in the city of La Paz, was founded the Convent of “Las Madres Concepcionistas”. These religious were required to carry with them an image of God which has three faces that represented: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. The significance of this illustration led to massive discussions; therefore in 1904 one of the supporters ordered to retouch and transform it and became one that it was totally accepted and was called “Lord Jesus of Great Power”. Since then this image has many faithful followers and its worship has spread. Initially the image was moved from home to home of the streets Mercado, Yungas, Figueroa, and Rosario’s Church. Later on it was moved to the street León de la Barra, to the house of a devout family to begin the worship service twice a week: Tuesday and Fridays. In 1928 a temple was constructed in the area of Chijini, and in 1930, the Chuquimia and Gisbert HOW IS CELEBRATED NOWADAYS? This year on May 30th is going to be held this festival in the city of La Paz with its traditional processions of the Lord Jesus of Great Power (Gran Poder). 62 fraternities which are groups of people are going to participate performing different typical Bolivian dances with colorful and amazing outfits. The names of the dances are: caporales, diablada, doctorcitos, incas, khantus, kullaguada, llamerada, mohoseñada, morenada, negritos, ollantay, phjillay, saya, suri tocoris, tinku, and tovas. It is expected about 40,000 dancers to be part of this festival along with 120 bands with around 50 members each. All these people will march and dance about 8 km to keep on the promise they made to the Lord Jesus of Great Power to faithfully dance for three years straight. The dancers are going to follow this route on May 30th: This festival grows every year in participants and luxuriousness, so if you have the chance to come and join this celebration, you are welcome! Learn new games to play at school taken from different countries around the world! Researchers & Designers: Ali & Scott, grade 5 FOUR SQUARE Four square is game in which you have to have 4 players and a square with lines (like the one in the picture below). What do you need to play? The only things you need to get started in a game of Four Square are some chalk, a patch of concrete somewhere, a bouncy ball like a soccer ball or volleyball and at least four people. With the chalk, draw a large square at least six feet wide and divide this big square into four equally sized small squares. You can choose to number the squares (1-4) or not. How do you play it? You push a basketball or any ball that bounces to other squares. For example, if you’re in the 3 rd square you can push the ball to the 1st 2nd or 4th square. You start off on the 1st square and work your way around. The trick is to bounce the ball back to the other person without it going outside the square you bounce it into. When you have worked your way around to the 4th square successfully, you are the “king” and you rule everything! Then you get to choose the rules like if you header the ball (bounce the ball off your head), kick the ball or bounce it off your hip, etc. It’s your choice, since you are the one in the 4th square! Watch the video below to understand the game more! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bA3CsIlVIWU Variations of the Game Instead of numbering the squares 1 to 4, you can play the game by naming the squares Ace, King, Queen, President, or in some other ranking order. If you have eight or more players, you can have two players for each square. Each time a player hits the ball to another square, they will jump out of the court, and their partner will jump in. The two players will keep trading places each time the ball is hit towards their square. When players bounce the ball, they must also call out the name of a country, a state an animal, a movie star, or whatever the category may be. A player is out if they repeat something that's already been said. HAVE FUN! Food Glorious Food! Recipes from around the world! Designer: Kira Amalie Sausage Rolls! With her time travelling power, she tries to use it to her advantage, but soon finds out that tampering with time can lead to some rather discomforting consequences. The Girl Who Leapt Through Time is a beautiful coming of age story, and it also works well as a time travel film. Its main themes are friendship and facing our responsibilities. It is a heartwarming film with striking visuals and vivid images. These visuals enhance the film’s story telling technique. The film is light-hearted and is filled with slapstick humor, but it knows when to be serious in tone. Audiences could relate to the main character, Kazuko, who is a high school student, and has problems, which every teenager has. It is a perfect balance of relationships and science-fiction. Child Hunger Child hunger is a world wide problem, and can cause big damages to a simple child’s life. Here are some of the saddest facts you may not know. 805 million people in the world do not have enough to eat. This number is down more than 100 million over the last decade, and 209 million lower than in 1990–92. One in every nine people on our planet go to bed hungry each night Hunger kills more people each year than AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis combined. Poor nutrition causes nearly half (45%) of deaths in children under five – 3.1 million children each year One out of six children — roughly 101 million — in developing countries is underweight. I hope you think about how you throw away food, and how much an apple could just save a life! UNIT WORK PRESENTATION The PYP Exhibition is a culminating project for the Primary Years Program of the International Baccalaureate Organization. It consists of a collaborative inquiry that students have a personal interest in exploring and that requires them to apply their learning from their previous years. The Exhibition is intense, tiring, exciting, selfdirected, process driven, rewarding and action provoking. The topic and action should be something which effects the students’ life (school, family or local community) and ideally, students should have a high interest in the topic that should inspire them to take positive action Mr. Eric Lalande: PYP 6 Homeroom Teacher G R A D E Vilde and Karen Anna 6 Dayana and Oline PYP EXHIBITION Christine and Silje Kjetil COMMUNITY TALK Community talk brings you the thoughts of members of our AIS community. Silje had some thoughts about Thanksgiving and how it can be extended beyond the American students at our school. Thank you for your input Silje! EXTENDING THE JOY OF THANKSGIVING By Silje, grade 6 Why Should All of AIS Celebrate Thanksgiving? I think we should celebrate Thanksgiving at school because it represents sharing and working together. It is a holiday for giving thanks for everything we have and you get to be with your friends and family. How Can AIS celebrate Thanksgiving together? We should all bring in some good food and eat it during lunch while sitting together. Maybe we could talk to someone we haven’t talk to before. For example; at my family’s Thanksgiving party many people come to our house and if they have a child that cannot read, then their child would be asked to put the name cards on the table, so people would have a good chance of sitting next to someone they didn’t know. Some Last Thoughts The Indians and pilgrims were very different people, yet they shared crops and gave each other food that the other had never tried before. "Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favor..." With these words, written by George Washington in 1789, an American holiday tradition was born.
